This week in the interview segment of Vatican Insider, I welcome Jacob Stein, a native of Omaha, Nebraska, who is working on his licentiate in dogmatic theology at the Angelicum in Rome. He has a fascinating story and passion and apostolate which he shares with us. That passion is called CRUX STATIONALIS and I am guessing many of you have seen his work on his website dedicated to that as well as what he has done for EWTN projects, ChurchPOP, etc. Jacob talks about how he came to Rome, his studies at the Angelicum, his favorite station churches and a special apostolate with a Roman Archconfraternity that helps the poor and needy and has a special devotion to care for pilgrims.

Have you ever heard a piece of "wisdom" that has been passed on for generations? For example, "You can do anything you put your mind to" or "Do what makes you happy". While these words can feel encouraging in a moment of stress, they may not be the most sound and virtuous ways to go about discerning life decisions. Laura Hudgens, a writer, junior high teacher, momma, and my friend, sits down with me as we talk through several of these little sayings. As referenced in one of her Grown and Flown articles, these phrases have become ingrained into our culture of encouragement. Of course, I always enjoy my friendly conversations with Laura, this interview is no different. So, I hope you sit back and enjoy - or fold your laundry - or drive to work -- but nonetheless, ENJOY! This one will have you smiling, shaking your head and even singing, Amen! Guest: Laura is a Catholic middle school teacher and a freelance writer. Ephesians 5 with Joe Heschmeyer – Episode 45 Play the podcast at the bottom of this page Joe Heschmeyer runs the blog http://shamelesspopery.com/ (Shameless Popery), has been on http://www.catholic.com (Catholic Answers Live), writes for https://www.wordonfire.org/ (Word on Fire), https://churchpop.com/ (ChurchPOP), Shttp://strangenotions.com/ (trange Notions), and many more! Tonight he talks with us all the way from Rome about the often misunderstood Ephesians Chapter 5. “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing[https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=56&chapter=5&version=31#fen-NIV-29315b (b)] her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. ” Just as Christ loved the Church. How did Christ love the Church? We discuss this in our episode. Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is head of his wife just as Christ is head of the church, he himself the savior of the body. As the church is subordinate to Christ, so wives should be subordinate to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the church and handed himself over for her to sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath of water with the word, that he might present to himself the church in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. So [also] husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one hates his own flesh but rather nourishes and cherishes it, even as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body.w For this reason a man shall leave [his] father and [his] mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”x This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the church.y In any case, each one of you should love his wife as himself, and the wife should respect her husband. – Ephesians 5: 24-33 We would love to hear from you so reach out to us on our https://www.facebook.com/thecatholicmanshow/ (Facebook page)! George and Andy take a quiz from ChurchPop that makes them decipher if a selection of lyrics are from a secular love song or a contemporary worship song. This quiz leads them to ask if it's a problem if the lyrics to a song intended to be sung to Jesus could just as easily be sung to your girlfriend. Other questions are also addressed: Why is there music and singing in worship services? Is there a Scriptural reason to support singing when Christians gather for worship? What should we expect to see in the lyrical content of songs intended for worship? Should worship be viewed as a time that God comes and serves us, or a time that we come together to worship and praise God? Should there be a different standard of lyrical content when singing to God corporately or by one's self? Andy has noticed what appears to be a thrust to have the songs and bands in services be something non-Christians or non-Church-goers wouldn't mind hearing. This means the band in a way has become an outreach component. Is this a good approach to sharing the Gospel? And if this is the intent of some services, are the “Jesus is my Girlfriend” songs missing the mark of their intent for evangelism? George and Andy both pick a song they have heard recently in a worship setting that has rubbed them the wrong way lyrically and they explain why. Their intent with this podcast is to promote Christians to evaluate what the purpose is of singing as a body of believers and to lead them to think about what they are singing when they gather in their local church bodies. Visit AndyWrasman.com and check out the post for Reconnect Episode 28 to access show links to the quiz they took and the songs they discuss.
