Dr Travelbest helps women travel. FAQ is: How many California Missions are there? Today's Destination is: Mission Santa Clara, California Today's Mistake- Purchasing a slip in Italy was a misunderstanding Travel Advice: Stretch FAQ: How many missions are there in California? There are a total of 21 missions in California's Historic Mission All of these missions are on a path, which they call a trail. All are located on or near Highway 101, which roughly traces El Camino Real named in honor of the Spanish monarchy which financed the expeditions into California in the quest for empire. Destinations: Mission Santa Clara, California This dates back to the 1700's and from a historical point of view it has value. This mission is the 8th mission in the chain of 21 Franciscan missions established by Padre Junipero Serra. It was first founded on January 12, 1777 on the banks of the Guadalupe River and was the first to be named by a woman. Flood fire and earthquake forced five relocations utul this site was selected in 1822. When Mexico seceded from the Spanish empire, the mission fell into decay. In 1851, they planned to turn it into a college, which is what we know today. "Located on the Guadeloupe River, the log chapel was founded in 1777 by Father Serra in honor of St. Clare only three months before his death.Located about 40 miles south of San Francisco, the main garden is devoted to tree roses, a mission tradition, and the string of willows planted along the miles between the mission and the pueblo of San Jose is today a well-traveled San Jose street known as The Alameda. Some initial mission walls exist and the bell tower holds the original bells sent from Spain. Smash and Grab is in the news as we see flash mobs showing up, not to dance, but to damage property and steal goods from stores. We are even seeing increased crime of commercial establishments here in my hometown of Poway CA. What is going on here? On one hand police in many cities are not pursuing petty theft crimes. There is a new normalization happening in society where some people think commercial burglary is no big deal. These businesses owners are rich and have insurance, right? Some would say this is evidence of desperate people making desperate choices during a tough economic time. Or could it be an erosion of a sound moral code of being an upstanding citizen that has abandoned the ideas of “thou shall not lie, cheat or steal”? We break it all down, including looking at policies where police resources are diverted to focus on issues like Civil Asset Forfeiture. Instead of protecting us from thieves, the police are the ones doing the theft. Omicron is Creating a New Hysteria! The Omicron variant is here, and the media is having a field day. But how dangerous is this new virus? We examine how government at all levels is reacting by further limiting individual rights. Your mission is simple. Go home to Christ and lead as many people as you can to Him. As we release this podcast, we are discovering that one of our California Missions has been burned to the ground in what seems to be a coordinated attack (Florida had a similar attack). I can't tell you how many times I have re-written this description because the most charitable thing I can come up with right now, involves denting the skulls of the cowards who desecrated these holy places of worship. Instead of going down that path however, join me in keeping my temper and let us pray for our enemies and those who persecute us: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen Hail Mary, full of Grace, The Lord is with thee, blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb; Jesus. Holy Mary mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Glory be to The Father, and to The Son, and to The Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
On this edition of Your Call’s Media Roundtable, we're remembering the late award-winning journalist Elias Castillo by rebroadcasting our conversation about his book Cross of Thorns: The Enslavement of California's Indians by the Spanish Missions. The violent mission system claimed the lives of more than 62,000 Indians.

In my last podcast about George Floyd and Individual Rights I called out the “stupid law” that triggered the terrible killing of Eric Garner. Pete was fired up by my comment and felt a need to share his own point of view. We really break down what happen with Eric Garner, the licensing and permit issues that the NYC government was enforcing and the greater issue of sin taxes on cigarettes to fund healthcare for smokers with lung issues. We also discuss the COVID mask issue and how that lines up with rights, empathy and being a good neighbor. Of course, we also talked Corvettes. You can’t not talk Corvettes when Pete is on the podcast. We also discuss a range of other people and places including Indian Reservations, NBA, I Can’t Breathe, New York City, New Jersey, cancer, facemasks, Target, gas tax, marijuana, PTSD, epilepsy, social distancing, inalienable rights, Cat Stevens, Tea for the Tillerman, California Missions, San Francisco, Billy Connelly, Oklahoma City Memorial, Timothy McVeigh, Netflix, Waco, David Koresh, Longmire, US Grant, History Channel, Butte, submarines, candy cigarettes, vaping, Carmel. #JohnRileyProject #BLM #BlackLivesMatter #COVID #ICantBreathe JRP0137 Our Sponsors: PowayStore.com: https://powaystore.com/ Happiness76.com: https://happiness76.com/ Trigger Energy: https://triggerenergy.com/ Pete Neild Info: Corvette C7 Calypso: https://www.calypso-c74pjn.com/ John Riley Project Info: Bookings? In this episode we discuss issues of Property Rights and Equality Under the Law within the context of recent policy proposals from the Poway City Council. In the aftermath of the Poway Chabad Shooting, Mayor Steve Vaus has proposed a revision to the city code to give Places of Worship a waiver so they do not have to come before the City Council to ask for a variance to build a wall or a fence above the 6 ft limit. This ultimately will give people greater security so they can pray without fear. But is this a case of expanding property rights for some and not for others? Should all property owners be treated equally under the law? How is this consistent with Mayor Vaus' desire to “Get Government Out of the Way”? In the other issue we revisit the topic of Granny Flats in Poway to partly help relieve pressure in our current housing crisis. We learn the city is still exploring the idea, but they are considering proposals that set up a business partnership between the city and the property owner including the city extending loans to property owners and participating in a revenue share agreement on rental income. How is this consistent with Mayor Vaus' desire to “Get Government Out of the Way”? Are there better ways to embrace the idea of Granny Flats while respecting property rights and individual liberty? We also discuss various other issues and people including the Burlingame Little League, Poway National Little League, Jon Canavan, Ancestry.com, University of New Mexico, California Missions, Electric Vehicles, Charging Stations, Hyundai, San Jose, El Super Burrito, Millbrae, San Rafael, Ross, San Buenaventura Mission, Mission San Rafael Arcangel. Jessica Johnson joined us to talk about her new book, Abandoned San Diego, that documents hidden treasures found in secret locations around San Diego that walk us through history, culture and nature. It was wonderful to discuss so many of the special locations and landmarks in Jessica’s book and her website: www.hiddensandiego.net. We talked about gold mines, haunted houses, secret caves, hidden waterfalls, partially built castles, graveyards, 19th century homes and so much more. But for me the greatest part of the conversation was Jessica’s higher purpose of helping adults rediscover their inner child as they relearn the ideas of exploration and play. It’s this sense of adventure that can help bring people from an overly structured, corporate life or from a dark, depressed place to find those special moments of freedom, enlightenment and joy. We covered many other topics and people including the Whaley House, Sunset Cliffs, Spalding Park, Lake Wohlford, Poway Historical Society, Mary Shepardson, Big Stone Lodge, Old Pomerado Road, Poway Stage Coach Stop, supernatural experiences, California Missions, Pala Mission, Castle Rock, Escondido, San Diego Historical Society, Old Town, ghost hunters, Jay Leno, empty nesters, happiness, doing what you love, teaching, art and Kate Sessions. Jessica Johnson won the prestigious Town Crier Award from the San Diego SOHO (Save Our Heritage Organization) for raising historic preservation awareness with her Abandoned San Diego book, Hidden San Diego website, and popular social media pages, which aim to interest young and active generations in exploring local historic sites and preserving them. On this episode of 5 Minutes in Church History, Dr. Stephen Nichols takes us to the Royal Road, a 600-mile trail that connects 21 missionary outposts in California. Read the transcript: https://www.5minutesinchurchhistory.com/california-missions-trail
In this JRP episode we breakdown the San Diego State of the City Address from Mayor Kevin Faulconer. We discuss Faulconer’s proposals to address the biggest issues facing San Diego: the housing crisis and homelessness. I was particularly pleased to see the Mayor offering market-based solutions that relax building regulations and zoning laws to make it easier and cheaper to build more housing. I thought his innovative approach to unlimited density in exchange for accommodations for affordable housing and the homeless was a great proposal. We also touch on a variety of other initiatives in his San Diego State of the City Address including Safe Parking, the homeless near the San Diego Sports Arena, micro units, granny flats, NIMBY vs YIMBY, expansion of bike lanes, Clean SD Initiative, the bike lane along the San Diego River, Pure Water Initiative, Community Choice Energy and the Trolley at the Airport. I share my thoughts on a wide variety of topics in a new segment I call The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. We celebrate the work of Tyler Couvrette, applaud the San Diego State Aztec basketball team and discuss recent good work by Congressmen Justin Amash (R-MI) and Scott Peters (D-CA). Then I highlight the Bad and the Ugly with the Government Shutdown, the grudge match between Speaker Pelosi and President Trump, the White House Reception for the Clemson Tiger National Champion football team and the irrational reaction to Senator Rand Paul’s hernia surgery. Finally, I present new developments with the John Riley Project and seek the input of my audience on the overarching theme of promoting Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. I discuss my recent social media campaign and invite listeners into my private Facebook group called The John Riley Project – Insiders Group where I offer bonus content not available in my other podcast channels. Plus I share my recent adventure to Albuquerque, my boondoggle to Santa Fe and my upcoming trip to San Luis Obispo including more visits to California Missions. John Riley Project Info: Bookings? Who built these beautiful buildings along the California coast and why?
When Pope Francis visited the United States in 2015, he canonized the eighteenth-century Franciscan missionary Junípero Serra, rekindling the smoldering controversy that surrounds this historical figure—both a holy man with zeal for the Gospel and an imperial agent with little concern for the indigenous culture he was supplanting. Serra is also a secular figure, a “founding father” of California, who established missions and presidios with names like San Diego, Santa Barbara, and San Francisco, that would become the backbone of the civic infrastructure of a territory that was first Spanish, then Mexican, then briefly independent, and finally part of the United States. Serra’s likeness stands in the National Statuary Hall in the US Capitol Building, the only Hispanic out of the 100 historical figures enshrined therein. On the podcast today, Steven Hackel speaks about his recent book, Junípero Serra: California’s Founding Father (Hill and Wang, 2014), a remarkable investigation into the cultural context of Serra’s world and lifelong formation—for it was only at the age of 59 that he first set foot in Alta California—and and his subsequent evangelization. Professor Hackel also discusses the politics of Serra’s recent canonization and his place in American memory. Dr. Hackel is Professor of History at the University of California at Riverside; he studies the Spanish Borderlands, colonial California, and California Indians, especially the effects of colonialism and disease upon the Indians and their responses to them. He is the author of two books on the subject; he is also editor of the Early California Population Project and director of the Early California Cultural Atlas; in addition, he is co-curator of the Huntington Library’s exhibition, “Junípero Serra and the Legacy of the California Missions.” Krzysztof Odyniec is a historian of the Early Modern Spanish Empire specializing on culture, diplomacy, and travel. He completed his PhD in 2017 at UC Berkeley where he is now a Visiting Scholar; he also teaches at Los Medanos College and Berkeley City College. Learn more about your ad choices.
