Cidny Bullens is not just a rock'n'roll lifer -- he's a survivor. He toured with Elton John and Bob Dylan and was nominated for two Grammys for his own solo work. If you've listened to the Grease soundtrack, you've probably heard him -- but this is all before he transitioned. Cid's been through quite a bit as well, and not just a rock and roll lifer, but also a survivor. And his recent memoir, TransElectric, Cidny talks about his journey from growing up in rural Massachusetts to New York to LA back to New York... and eventually Portland, Maine, and all the obstacles along the way: flying high In the music scene to his lows with struggling with addiction and losing his daughter and being in the closet as a trans person in the sixties and seventies without even really knowing what that meant or what the possibilities could be. Cidny complemented the memoir with Little Pieces and put it out in 2020. So you can guess what happened there. That's why Kill Rock Stars signed Cidny and reissued the album earlier this month. In this interview, Cindy and I talk about his life, intergenerational LGBTQ+ work, recording Little Pieces, and what's next for him. Purchase your copy of Rainbow Rodeo right here! Guess who finally decided to return with a new episode? To be fair, we have no real good excuse...except LIFE!In that vein, what a thrill it is to be alive when you're speaking with someone like Cidny Bullens, and going through selected bits of the incredible adventure that has been his life. His career has seen him sharing the stage with Sir Elton John, Rod Stewart -- and even Bob Dylan, just to name a few from his extensive highlight reel. He takes stock of his life and the journey that it has led him on with his memoir, Trans Electric: My Life As a Cosmic Rock Star.Beyond the key career moments that he details in his book, Cidny also reveals his own healing process and how he ultimately found himself and transitioned from female to male ten years ago. Going through the process, he found unexpected love, becoming a stepfather and a grandfather. Happily, he also discovered his true voice and true power as a performer. We really enjoyed speaking with Cid and getting to go inside his experiences both past and present. He continues to work tirelessly on new music and recently put out Little Pieces, his latest album via Kill Rock Stars. Look also for a forthcoming collaboration with Lucinda Williams, where he'll revisit one of his own songs for a new single that's expected to be released in 2024.For more about Cidny Bullens, we highly recommend reading David Browne's excellent profile which recently ran at Rolling Stone. And of course, for goodness sake, don't miss the book. You won't be able to put it down. Our thanks to our dear comrade Angie for helping to make this conversation happen. Kudos!
In a very special interview, Colby and I had the complete joy and honor of talking with Cidny Bullens, a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, who is known for being a backup vocalist for Elton John, singing lead vocals on the Grease soundtrack, and has nine critically-acclaimed solo albums. Cid humbly shares how the deep grief of child loss transformed his life, in more ways than one—including influencing his decision to publicly come out as a transgender man, and the creation of an album in his daughter's memory, that he says, is now his legacy. You won't want to miss this conversation, or his amazing podcast performance of our theme song, As Long As You Love (Scarlet Wings). The customers are cranking through the Shop at 9 a.m. on Monday morning as Hannah is literally live from the Book Shop (yay, mute button) and we are ready to crank through some books, starting first with "TransElectric," the revelatory musician memoir from Cidny Bullens, who used to be Cindy Bullens (and we talk about that), back-up singer to Elton John (we talk about "Me," as well) and so much more. Then comes a bunch of stuff about books that come out in September, including "Amazing Grace Adams" (let's hear it for perimenopausal women!) and the new Lauren Groff (it's miserable — in a good way! And it is based in Virginia, yes). This leads into a sidebar on why it's hard to handsell "Chain-Gang All-Stars," but we come up with a way to do it. Then Hannah tells us a story about someone buying 500 copies of TJ Newman's "Falling" from an indie bookstore as a way to talk about "Drowning," which is her new book, and a way to mildy apologize for slagging "Falling" last year — "shame on me; I'm not always right." Finally, we wrap up with the "laugh-out-loud" book, "The Rachel Incident," which comes out later this month and is like "Sally Rooney, but funny," and leads to the question, "Do British people like American swearing as much as I like British swearing?" Oh, and Sam doesn't like the National Book Award-winning "Let the Great World Spin."
The Refugees may be a relatively new band to many, but their members are longtime veterans of the music industry. Wendy Waldman (featured in Episode 60) is a composer/musician/singer who appeared on albums by artists including Linda Ronstadt, Jimmy Buffett and Maria Muldaur. She's released nine solo studio albums, too. Deborah Holland (featured on Episode 140) launched her career with the supergroup Animal Logic (including Stewart Copeland and Stanley Clarke) in 1987. Since then, she's released six solo albums and recently 2 new singles with Animal Logic. Touring and recording with Elton John and Rod Stewart, Cidny Bullens rounds out the trio. Multi-award winning program director Ray White shares insights from Wendy and Deborah talking about The Refugees and their other recent work. Their brand new album is California. In our showcase segment, we feature a tribute to the "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll," Tina Turner. Awards during her illustrious career have included selling well over 100 million records and receiving 12 Grammy awards. Tina passed away on May 24, 2023. The ladies rule on this episode, from Classic Artists Today.
On their album “California,” The Refugees send a love letter to their favorite folk rock classics. Band members Cidny Bullens, Deborah Holland, and Wendy Waldman discuss their process in covering their favorite songs and play music from the project during this joint presentation of Wendy's From The Longhouse and Cidny's Cracking The Sky podcasts.
Sam is feeling good about himself, having made some customers happy with recommendations in the Shop this past weekend, and maybe even fueled some important TikToks. Unfortunately, he mistakes Vice and Vox, and thinks Vulture is going out of business, but isn't. Regardless, check out Bookshop.org. And our Events page. Oh, and Elliot Bostwick Davis was at the Met, in addition to the MFA, where Sam dropped a bunch of acid. You should come see her speak at Hastings House on May 25 in the Farms. Nevermind about the history of "Labor-in-Vain" as an Ipswich street — it's old. Also, hear about "TransElectric" from Cidny Bullens, "Warrior Girl Unearthed" from Angeline Boulley (the follow-up to "Firekeeper's Daughter," which was awesome), "Dead Man's Wake" from Paul Doiron (Maine mystery!), "We Are Too Many" from Hannah Pittard (a "kind of" memoir about her husband sleeping with her best friend), and, finally, "Updike" from Adam Begley, which Sam is about halfway through, but is scandalous, in general. Did you hear about the plaque dedication? More to come on that.

Musician, author, singer/songwriter...Cid Bullens has had quite the career over the decades. Our talk focused on the loss of Cid's daughter Jessie in the mid-90's, and the subsequent album "Somewhere Between Heaven and Earth" that emerged from Cid's grief. (Please note that there are a handful of sound issues, but they only last a couple of seconds each.) More info on Cid: https://www.facebook.com/cidnybullenscidnybullens.comtherefugeesmusic.com

The story behind how this week's conversation happened is almost as good as the interview itself! So, you may know this already, but I'm a big fan of Grease 2, which I think is a far superior film to Grease. Having heard me rant about it on a previous episode of the show (see 'Queer as Punk' with Demi Wylde) a follower on twitter, @rnfrw, who is also a long time listener of the show (hello!) reached out to disagree, and we had a little bit of a back and forth about it. This got me thinking about Grease, which led me to wikipedia, and then I fell in to a bit of a wiki-hole and now I have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the two films… But, one of the things that I didn't know before I fell in to this wiki-hole, is what happened to the singer behind my absolute favourite song from the soundtrack to the Grease movie, which is obviously ‘It's Raining on Prom Night'. And my internet sleuthing led me to the singer/songwriter Cidny Bullens.... Cidny has had a long and fascinating career, and made the brave decision to transition in 2010 in his early 60s… We had a really great conversation about his life, but I have to admit that we're kind of stretching the theme somewhat, and rather than talk about one physical space we are talking about the spaces that were created on the 1975 Elton John West of the Rockies Tour. Cidny was a back up singer on this tour, and is currently in the process of writing his memoir, so had a tonne of stories and insights to share about that experience and creating magic in front of an audience every evening.... Do you have any memories of clubbing from your own queer scene that you want to share? Well, if you have please get in touch - I want to create the biggest online record of people's memories and stories - go to www.lostspacespodcast.com and find the section 'Share a Lost Space' and tell me what you got up to! Bonus points for embarrassing photos! You can also find me on Facebook (www.facebook.com/lostspacespod), Instagram (www.instagram.com/lostspacespod) and Twitter (www.twitter.com/lostspacespod) Find out more about Cidny at his website (https://www.cidnybullens.com/), or on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/cidbullens/), or Twitter (https://www.twitter.com/cidnybullens/) --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/k-anderson/message
Cidny Bullens is a singer-songwriter whose career first took off in the 1970s, touring with Elton John and singing on the soundtrack for the movie Grease. Solo success would follow with two Grammy nominations. Cidny's style was androgynous - big hair, jumpsuits, flares, leather jackets... topped off with an electric guitar. But hidden behind the accolades were years of struggling with gender identity, something Cidny confronted aged 61. Ten years later he recorded his first album as man. Peter Ralston is world renowned photographer whose work I have admired for the 30 years I've known him. Peter and I have a wonderful conversation about his idyllic upbringing in rural Pennsylvania as the fortunate neighbor of the great 20th Century painter Andrew Wyeth and his equally creative and influential wife, Betsy. We talk about how they demanded he come with them to the coast of Maine as a young man--already a dedicated, fledgling photographer--and how that one act changed the entire trajectory of his life. Peter talks openly and honestly about his challenges after a life-threatening and life-altering brain aneurysm and it's long-term complications, and what it took for him to finally make it back to "making pictures." Peter's story is inspiring and heartfelt. He is a true creative.Peter grew up in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, worked for a decade as a freelance photojournalist, and then began photographing the coast of Maine in 1978, drawn especially to the working communities that defined the coasts enduring character. His work has been reproduced in many books and magazines featured repeatedly on network television and has been exhibited in galleries, collections and museums throughout the United States and abroad. In 2003, Peter was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at Colby College for his photography, as well as his role as co-founder (with Philip Conkling) of the Island Institute. Although as a young man, Ralston studied very briefly under Ansel Adams, he acknowledges the greater artistic influence of a lifetime of association with Andrew Wyeth, a close friend and incisive mentor. Peter and his wife, Terri, opened the Ralston Gallery in Rockport, Maine, in 2011, selling his photographs as well as the work of his lifelong friends, Andrew and Jamie Wyeth. He is currently working on a major book about the coast of Maine. www.ralstongallery.com

Cracking The Sky with host singer/songwriter Cidny Bullens, is a podcast featuring creatives from around the world talking about their experience with their own creative process and what it takes for them to make something out of nothing. Vancouver based singer-songwriter Leah Barley joins us on Episode 556 of Folk Roots Radio to chat about her first full length album “Bring Out Your Dead” which features eight original songs for both guitar and banjo - ranging from foot stomping love songs to others that are dark and broody, and, clearly, quite personal. Cidny Bullens is a two-time Grammy nominee, songwriter, performer, activist, and speaker originally from Massachusetts. With 45 years as a rock star under his belt, he explains what is at stake in this election and why everyone should vote.
In 2012, Cidny Bullens was ready to tell the world who he really was. An article published in The Daily Beast gave him the opportunity to explain the previous year’s transition in his own words — the realization of something he’d long known but hadn’t allowed himself to be honest about. This year, Bullens released his first album under his name, a major step for an artist whose professional career has spanned more than 40 years. In those early days, he’d found work backing Elton John, sang the lead vocals on three tracks on the Grease movie soundtrack, and found a Grammy-nominated hit with the 1979 album, Desire Wire. The 80s found him leaving music to raise raise two daughters, returning the music in the late-90s following a personal tragedy. The event transformed Bullens’ work into something far more personal, serving as an important tool in his arsenal some 12 years later, when he announced to the world that he was a transgender man. Walkin’ Through this World finds Bullens ready to tell his story in an entirely new way.
This week on Revenge of the 80s Radio, Cidny Bullens talks with Chris upon the release of his first album as Cidny: Walkin' Through This World. You might remember Cidny when he was Cindy Bullens, star backup singer to the likes of Elton John, featured on the Grease soundtrack and through her own solo work. Cidny discusses his music, his transition, his life, how Cindy broke into the music business and thoughts on the album.
This week, we play music from Morrissey, Book of Love, Allen Vega, Nick Lowe and more. Hour 2 features a conversation with Cidny Bullens
