The Framestore Podcast, our learning and talent development focused podcast made by Framestore, for Framestore, is back with this weeks second instalment of our 'Heads of CG' Special! We're back with Heads of CG for Integrated Advertising (IA) at our London and Los Angeles studios: Johannes Sambs and Jessica Groom Shelton. Across both of this weeks instalments we ask Johannes and Jess to tackle the 'Framestore Podcast Dailies' questions together, providing a rare insight into their creative leadership roles. In today's episode, we tackle common myths about working in VFX, including how Jess often has to correct friends and family who mistakenly assume she's a graphic designer! Johannes clears up the misconception that Heads of CG have "certain powers," and together they explore how visual effects are everywhere—both visible and invisible. We explore the roots of Imposter Syndrome, highlighting how it's something everyone experiences to some extent. Jess and Johannes connect over their love for The LEGO Movie, a project Jess worked on during her time at Animal Logic. We also mention influential mentors and offer some valuable career advice. Enjoy!
The Framestore Podcast, our learning and talent development focused podcast made by Framestore, for Framestore, is back with another brand-new instalment. We're back with another special two-part episode, featuring the Heads of CG for Integrated Advertising (IA) at our London and Los Angeles studios: Johannes Sambs and Jessica Groom Shelton. Across both of this weeks instalments we ask Johannes and Jess to tackle the 'Framestore Podcast Dailies' questions together, providing a rare insight into their creative leadership roles. Bringing nearly two decades of experience from top visual effects studios. As the current Head of CG, LA at Framestore, Jessica Groom Shelton has previously led creative teams at The Mill and honed her craft in surfacing and grooming at Animal Logic and MPC. With a portfolio that spans blockbuster films and groundbreaking commercials, Jessica is a driving force in the VFX Industry. Having spent near-innumerable days in the VFX industry, Johannes has been instrumental in creating breathtaking visual effects for some of the world's top brands and projects, only made possible by working alongside some of the world's top VFX artists at Framestore. As a CG expert never fully specialising in a single discipline, he still brings an artistic finesse to every frame. Starting as a freelancer, he now leads the mighty London IA CG team at Framestore. We catch up with Jess and Johannes where we hear about their leadership approaches, both in terms of Jess's recent appointment at LA's new Head of CG, and Johanness's journey as current London CG Head. We discuss the relationships that have made them great leaders, and how the number one priority is the protection of our artists and not losing that connection, which is fostered by working on projects and working with them closely. We explore the transitions and challenges of shifting from hands-on artistic roles to senior creative positions, where the focus shifts more toward managing people and HR logistics while still staying involved in projects where making informed decisions on creative work is key. Additionally, they share insights about top secret Christmas commercials they're working on (without revealing too much, of course) and reflect on what they consider to be their big breaks in the VFX industry! This week is a must listen for anyone interested in creative leadership and managing artists at Framestore.

Every two weeks on Mondays, we welcome a special guest to the pod to answer questions about their inspirations, work at our studio, and career journey via the Framestore Podcast 'dailies' questions. Then, the following Thursday, we invite a guest 'co-host' from our global community to take over, engaging our guest in a deeper dive conversation for a valuable learning experience. Our special guest this week is Lara Hopkins, Head of Studio for Framestore Melbourne. Lara spent significant terms at Framestore, first as CG Manager and later in recruitment and studio management. In 2009, she played a crucial role in crewing up for Happy Feet 2 at Dr. D Studios, returning to Framestore in 2012, serving as the New York's Head of Recruitment and later as a Global Recruitment Consultant. 4 years at ILM, Sydney, followed where Lara rose to the position of Director of Talent Management, then rejoining Framestore to lead our Melbourne Studio in October last year. Our co-host for this conversation is Kathleen Ruffalo, Recruitment Manager, Framestore USA. Kathleen began her career in the entertainment industry in 2010 working as a Production Assistant on a string of reality TV series including Hell's Kitchen, Big Brother, and Dancing with the Stars, before making the shift to scripted television which included working as an Office PA on the final season of the long-running series House. In the Summer of 2012 Kathleen joined Framestore helping to launch our Los Angeles studio, where she ascended from Production, to Crew Management, to Recruitment Manager where she's been since late 2019. Honing her musical skills while growing-up on the East coast, Deborah Holland found her way to Los Angeles in the late ‘70s in an attempt to break into the music business. A demo of two of her songs landed in the hands of Stewart Copeland and Stanley Clarke, who were searching for a female vocalist to front their new band project, which became Animal Logic. She got the gig, which was a major stepping stone in propelling her career. After making two albums with Animal Logic, Deborah has since recorded and released several solo albums, she's a member of the folk supergroup The Refugees, a film scorer and educator, and in 2020 she released her latest EP titled “Fine, Thank You.” Recently, two new Animal Logic songs have been released - the first new music from the trio in over three decades. Here to talk to us about this new music and her career in music is Deborah Holland.

A recent survey actually found that 30% of “traditionally employed” Canadians expect to transition to self-employment in the next two years. But where do you start? There's so much to know about starting your own business and making it successful. What many people don't know is that if you are unemployed or underemployed, there are various programs and resources you can access in BC - self-employment support is one of them. In this episode, we chat with Lynne Brisdon (Manager, Self Employment Program at YMCA of Greater Vancouver), Mike Plumb (Owner at Dusk N Dawn Adventure Co and WorkBC Centre alumni) and Andrea Welling (Regional Director BC at Futurpreneur Canada) about self employment and entrepreneurship in Vancouver, and where you can go to get help getting your business off the ground.Links and Resources:Who's Hiring? “The Police: Deranged For Orchestra” Born in Virginia and raised in Cairo and Beirut by a Scottish archoeolist mother and an American father who founded the CIA, Stewart Copeland has had quite a life. So much so, that his biography deserves its own podcast but for the sake of time, let's go with the expurgated version. Copeland started playing drums at 12 and after finishing boarding school in England and college at UC Berkeley, he returned to the UK to play drums for Curved Air. In 1977 he founded The Police with Sting and after recruiting guitarist Andy Summers to replace Henry Padovani, the new wave power trio locked in and the rest, as they say, is history. But in the case of the Police, let's go with history to the 10th power. The Police are one of the best selling bands of all time, with record sales heading close to 100 million worldwide. They put out five albums from 1978 to 1983 and by the time their last one hit shelves, they were arguably the biggest band in the world. Their legacy is safely enshrined in the rock and roll hall of fame and Copeland is considered one of the greatest drummers to ever sit behind the kit, but his legacy doesn't stop there. He's scored movies like Rumble Fish, Wall Street, and Talk Radio; TV shows like The Equalizer, Dead Like Me and Star Wars: Droids. He's also scored ballets that were commissioned by everyone from the San Francisco Ballet Company to the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. He's collaborated with Tom Waits, Peter Gabriel, Les Claypool and Adam Ant; he played in other bands like Animal Logic and Oysterhead with Trey Anastasio of Phish. He's scored video games, done voices for movies like South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut, he put out his memoir Strange Things Happen: A Life with the Police, Polo and Pygmies and he collaborated with the Long Beach Opera on a production of Edgar Allen Poe's The Telltale Heart. Well, the always busy Copeland's new project is called The Police: Deranged for Orchestra. It's basically a fresh take on The Police songbook, by way of the 28 member ReCollecitve Orchestra. They reimagine songs like Roxanne and Don't Stand So Close To Me and the results are captivating and spellbinding. In this conversation, Copeland talks to Alex about rock and roll bands as democracies, the elasticity of the Police's compositions and why he speeds things up when Sting is in the audience. www.stewartcopeland.net www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers: Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Episode 66 is a real toe-tapper, as Chris and Alex dance to the beat of George Miller’s 2006 computer-animated musical feature Happy Feet (George Miller, 2006), produced by U.S. studio Village Roadshow Pictures in collaboration with Australian animation and VFX studio Animal Logic. Joining them to discuss this digital tale of all-singing all-dancing penguins is Dr. Hannah Hamad, Senior Lecturer in Media and Communication at Cardiff University’s School of Journalism, Media and Culture, having previously been Lecturer in Film Studies at King’s College London, and Senior Lecturer in Media Studies at the University of East Anglia. Hannah’s first monograph Postfeminism and Paternity in Contemporary US Film was published by Routledge in 2014, and since then she’s gone on to write on recessionary reality TV, austerity, contemporary celebrity/stardom and postfeminist media cultures, the postracial, and feminist media history. Listen as they discuss Happy Feet’s racial body politics and problematic relationship to neo-minstrelsy; the ‘invisible’ role of dance performer Savion Glover within the film’s marketing campaign, and how Happy Feet’s status as a ‘post-Gollum’ motion-capture feature taps into its appropriation of black culture; discourses of the post-racial within mid-2000s animated features in Hollywood; the star vocal performance of Robin Williams; and the extent to which audiences are able to accept as the fantasy of the animated medium as a vital form of social discourse.

John and Alan sit down with Burleigh Drummond and Mary Harris-Drummond from Ambrosia for an hour of stories. What kind of stories? Stories about how Bruce Hornsby first got his start in Ambrosia, Debby Boone, Ringo Starr, Michael McDonald, Edger Winter, Jimmy Buffett, and a bunch of other people all played a part in Burliegh and Mary's lives. Hear about how the soft pop stars Ambrosia killed time on the road by using explosives to launch trash cans in the air. Burleigh laments on having to practice in front of the greatest drummers in the world and Mary tells us about Sting and Stewart Copeland trying to push each other out of an airplane in flight. Burleigh and Mary talk about what it's like to have a second generation of Drummonds playing music together, and Burleigh finally clears the air on why Dave Pack isn't with the band. Most of all it's a delightfully fun trip through 5 decades of music, and some great stories told by a couple who's marriage has survived the same amount of time.Tin Drum Music - www.tindrummusic.comAmbrosia Official Website - www.ambrosialive.net

Decíamos ayer que The Police estaba en la cresta de la ola por méritos propios y por canciones como esta: Spirits in the Material World Traspasados los años 80 The Police fue abandonando su condición new wave para centrarse en su vertiente más pop. Así sucede en Ghost in the Machine (1981), un disco producido por Hugh Padgham que incluye los sencillos «Spirits in the Material World», que acabamos de escuchar, y «Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic» que escucharemos ahora. Un ejemplo: If you love somebody set them free. Sin abandonar es trabajo, vamos a escuchar otro corte: We work the black sean.

How can I harness, and protect, the value of my intellectual property? Creative ideas are valuable. Today we are talking to Darin Grant, the CTO at Animal Logic. And we discuss what it took to bring The Matrix, Happy Feet and The Lego Movie to the big screen, the difference between partners and vendors, and we even get a few unexpected tips that will make you a better problem solver. All of this, right here, right now, on the Modern CTO Podcast!
A lot has changed since Darin Grant last appeared on the CG Garage podcast back in September 2016. The VFX industry has overcome its cloud-computing fears and embraced it wholesale, making it faster and cheaper to create imagery for Hollywood movies. Darin, meanwhile, left Solid Angle to consult for various companies and is now CTO for creative digital studio Animal Logic, the company behind The Lego Movie 2, The Matrix and Happy Feet. In this podcast, Darin offers an overview of the recent history and near future of CG, including why acquisitions of small companies by big ones aren’t necessarily bad, and the pros and cons of software subscription models. He also talks about his ongoing work for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and ACM SIGGRAPH. Few people have such comprehensive knowledge and foresight of the VFX industry as Darin, making this vital listening for everyone from junior VFX artists to head honchos at major studios.
In this week's episode Craig and Geoff take a look at Zack Snyder's first animated film, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole. Together, they chat about the book series by Kathryn Lasky that the film is based upon. Animation wizards/studio, Animal Logic and they also are joined again by special guest Evie Reid. Who knows what insights 7-year old Evie will bring! www.fftlpodcast.com Insta: @fftlpodcast FB: @fftlpodcast Twitter: @fftlpodcast

How is it that a drummer for one of the most influential rock bands in history finds himself largely rejecting his pop music past to pursue a career as composer, authoring a prolific series of film scores, operas, and ballets? That’s what happened with Stewart Copeland. From his founding of the Police with Sting and Henri Padovani, who was later replaced by Andy Summers, Copeland has enjoyed a career that has been injected with creativity, unpredictability and surprising opportunity. Along with his collaborations with artists such as Peter Gabriel, Roger Daltry, Mike Rutherford, Tom Waits, and Stanley Clarke and Deborah Holland of Animal Logic, today Copeland’s open-minded approach keeps him constantly connected with new creative opportunities. His credits are too long to mention, and his position as one of the best musicians in the modern music era lives on. Inside MusiCast is pleased to welcome Stewart Copeland.
