Laura's Puppy Whelping Tips and ‘Must Have' Supply List Host Laura Reeves walks listeners through the “Ya Ya Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Collection of Whelping Supplies” in this excerpt from Pure Dog Talk's LIVE@5 live podcast. [caption id="attachment_12264" align="alignnone" width="739"] Pure Dog Talk's Whelping List, AKA What's In Our Box, AKA "The Ya Ya Sisterhood of Traveling Pants Whelping Supplies"[/caption] Laura lays out the “whys and wherefores” of what everyone should have on hand before the big day arrives. From the size and construction of your whelping box to the traction required in the whelping pads and the heat source to keep puppies warm, she lays out her personal experience acquired over decades and additionally informed by the knowledge acquired during the last six years of Pure Dog Talk interviews. “Your whelping box needs to have sufficient room for your bitch to be able to be away from the heat source, but still close enough for the puppies to get to her,” Laura noted. “It is going to depend (on) how large is your female, how large is your litter? That will determine how large your box is. “For the first couple weeks, everybody's going to be in the box and in some breeds it's going to be a lot longer than that. But you need to also then prepare to have a system whereby the mom can leave the box, leave the puppies. And go back and forth so that she can nurse them but still have some time to get away from them. “Number one priority for your whelping box, in addition to the size, is the ability to disinfect it. I know there are people who have homemade whelping boxes using plywood and two by fours and all the rest of it. In and of itself, that's not a horrendous thing. The only thing that I'm gonna tell you with that is that you, number one, must seal the wood. Because if you use that whelping box for multiple litters, you have contagions that you cannot disinfect from raw wood. “If you are using a hard sided box, you must have what we call pig rails. So those are about two inches wide, and they stick out about two inches above the floor for about two inches out into the center. And it's a place where puppies can get kind of shoved so that mom doesn't lie down on top of them and squish them. “Next up is our strong recommendation that wherever you are placing your whelping box should not be in a high traffic area. Particularly for the actual whelping. Bitches do not want to have their puppies with an audience of 20. They just don't. They would like to be in a dark, cave-like environment. “(You can) lay a sheet over the top of X pens around the whelping box. Put it in a corner. Put it in a separate room. Make sure that the room itself, the ambient temperature of the room itself, (is) about 70 degrees. The whelping box, where the actual puppies are, needs to be at least at least 90 degrees. Puppies cannot maintain their body temperature for minimum the first two weeks. They have to have a way to go to a warm spot and away from the warm spot. Mom is close enough to warm enough, but she isn't always there. “Puppies are like heat seeking missiles. They will find the heat or find a way from the heat. They will find the food or away from the food. That's about the sum total of their abilities for the first ten days. Find heat, find cool, find mom, go to sleep. That's what they do. They're potatoes. “We have found one thing to be super effective is find a piece of linoleum. Cheap garbage linoleum. Cut it to the dimensions of what will be your puppy area so that you can protect your floors. I used tarps for a lot of years. They're terrible. They get torn up. They may be cheaper, but they're not a great solution. The linoleum is an amazing solution. You keep it rolled up, you lay it out when it's time to get your puppy whelping area ready. Lay your linoleum down. Put your whelping box on top of...

Les, Kurt, and Jason are the podcast equivalent of Lacey Chabert, Autumn Reeser, and Allison Sweeney, only the guys aren't sharing a wedding veil (you gotta listen to the pod to see what they think guys would share amongst themselves). But first, Kurt has some opinions on the Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood (not to be confused with The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants), and some big Blac Chyna news. Then Les claims that a trend that started on an episode of Seinfeld is now growing in the real world. But then it's time for the guys to once again put on The Wedding Veil for Hallmark's The Wedding Veil Legacy (this time it's personal). Among other things, it features a (possibly) racist Nonna and a character that may be luring young children with the promise of historical poetry. What this movie lacks in some much-needed face tattoos, it more than makes up for in fabulous turtlenecks and squirting cannoli cream. And at the end of the day, it all makes for a solid episode of Hallmark Movies and Mysteries' new romantic dramedy Wedding Veil and Tux. Episode Eighteen of Oh, Deer... presented by Bo's Bar & Stage is brought to you by the letter 'R'. Definitely not for the word 'rails', because we went off those way too many times... but because it's sponsored by the Red Deer Senior Rustlers. It's also brought to you by a letter, because the guys dressed up for Halloween (for an audio podcast...) as the Sesame Street gang. Two of the Sr. Rustlers' founding fathers, Mike Dempster and Jonny Li stop by to chat with former teammates Dustin and Lund, and former General Manager Ted (AKA not good enough to play), and take a nice stroll (or skate) down memory lane. There's also some less-than-desirable revelations about Lund's feeling for birds, and Ted's 'type' when it comes to women as everyone discusses their first celebrity crushes. To wrap things up, Dustin vs Walsh features everyone's favourite game; Netflix or Nonsense, but in the spirit of Halloween, this version is 'Horror or Hogwash'. Basically, there's a lot to unpack in this episode. Good luck.

First Draft Episode #230: Miranda Popkey Miranda Popkey, essayist and debut author of Topics of Conversation. The presenting sponsor for this episode is The Slow Novel Lab, a six-week online writing and creativity course developed and taught by bestselling and award-winning novelist Nina LaCour (listen to her First Draft episodes here and here). The next six-week session of The Slow Novel Lab begins on February 16th, and you can enroll today by going to NinaLaCour.com. This episode was brought to you in part by Adeline’s Aria by Laynie Bynum, the first in her new Infernal Echo series, out Jan. 28 from Fire and Ice YA! Links and Topics Mentioned In This Episode Miranda is best friends with Zan Romanoff, author of A Song to Take the World Apart, Grace and the Fever, and the forthcoming Look (listen to her First Draft interview here, and her mailbag episode here!). You can read them write about their friendship in The Atlantic’s Friendship Files here, and in the Two Bossy Dames newsletter here (and they shout out First Draft, too!) At her dad’s house, Miranda read whatever was around, including such “dad” trope classics as David McCullough’s Truman. However, Robert Caro’s The Years of Lyndon Johnson: The Path to Power was a little too much for her as a young reader (but she loves the Caro books on Johnson now, which also includes Master of the Senate and Means of Ascent) Mysteries have always been a particular favorite for Miranda, especially—as a young reader—Nancy Drew by Carolyn Keene and Agatha Christie (the Hercule Poirots, not the Miss Marple, please). But she was also very into Rebecca Wells’ Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood series. The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje (and the movie) were Miranda’s “Oh… sex!” moments… mine was Anne Rice Interview with a Vampire (and the movie) A famous creative writing course at Yale was “Daily Themes” Anne Fadiman (author of The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down and The Wine Lover’s Daughter: A Memoir) is a creative nonfiction professor at Yale Poet Louise Gluck (author of Faithful and Virtuous Night: Poems) was Miranda’s Poetry teacher at Yale, and later in Miranda’s professional life Louise encouraged Miranda to write fiction Among the professors teaching at Washington University are more experimental writers like Kathryn Davis, author of Duplex: A Novel and The Silk Road: A Novel, and Danielle Dutton, author of Margaret the First: A Novel and Sprawl Dorothy, A Publishing Project is run by Danielle Dutton and her husband, fellow author and Washington University professor Martin Riker Rachel Cusk’s Outline trilogy (Outline, Transit, and Kudos) was a major inspiration for MIranda as she chose to break traditional storytelling mold by writing a series of conversations Miranda read Rings of Saturn by W.G. Sebald in her MFA program, and was interested in how Sebald experimented with the “slippage of the narrative ‘I’” Ben Marcus, author of Notes From the Fog: Stories, while he was a visiting professor at Washington University, encouraged Miranda to turn a series of short stories into a novel, which became Topics of Conversation I want to hear from you! CTW S2E08 – Don’t Go Back to Sleep Patricia Taub is an author and life-long feminist. Her advocacy for women dates back to feminism’s second wave; about 40 years ago, while pregnant with her oldest son, Pat went to her first protest march. After writing the advice column, Coping, for almost eight years, she founded and hosted the award-winning program, Women’s Voices, for the NPR affiliate station, WAER. In 1995, Pat had the chance to learn about the difficulties of women in developing countries when she attended the UN Women’s Conference in Beijing. The experience ignited her devotion to helping women, and in 2001 her work on community activism for women was honored by the National Organization for Women. Frustrated about the lack of resources on helping manage life as an older woman, Pat created the blog Women’s Older Wisdom. Through the blog, along with the WOW Facebook community, Pat creates spaces for older women to connect and exchange personal experiences. In addition to writing on her blog, Pat has also authored the memoir, The Mother of My Invention. Pat joins me today to discuss women’s mental health and empowerment. She shares some of the biggest concerns women have about getting older, such as Alzheimer’s and being isolated. She explains why it’s important for women to find and build a community with other women and reveals what the older women in her community are doing to dispel some of the toxic myths that revolve around women and aging. She also encourages women to reclaim the ‘crone’ phase in a positive way and illustrates how ancient cultures and societies saw the phases of womanhood. ‘We have a responsibility to show younger women that we can hold our heads high in old age.’ - Pat Taub This week on Coffee Table Wisdom: The biggest concerns women have about getting older Why older women fear isolation The importance and impact of women building a community How Pat’s community of older women inspired a group of young women to learn from them How women are destroying the toxic myths about women and aging Why older women should support younger women The three phases of a woman’s life and how to reclaim ‘old age’ Resources mentioned: The Gift of Years by Joan Chittister Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood by Rebecca Wells Connect with Pat Taub: Women’s Older Wisdom Pat Taub on Twitter Email: hello@wowblog.me Join the Revolution! This week Kyle, Matthew, and Laura welcome back Joe Kaye for a feature length commentary on the 90's animated summer classic A Goofy Movie. Thrill as every breaks down which anthropomorphized animal character was their sexual awakening. Plus, Powerlines might be the most underrated artist of the 90's. We also talk about the waking nightmare that is the new trailer for Cats. And you better believe Kyle has some strong opinions about Disney Afternoon. A fun cinematic journey into the summer of rad. As a bonus, on the intro Kyle is joined by Jen Saunderson for some extra fun riffing. They imply they might be starting a new podcast so stand by for more info on that in the future (and you thought there wouldn't be any more teases for new stuff after Comic Con!). We got a little delayed this week thanks to high school Speech & Debate (YES REALLY) but we're BACK to discuss #GreysAnatomy Season 2, Episode 15. To jump ahead to our reflections on the Women's March, skip to the 56 minute mark. But first: our episode summary (02:38); Seattle Grace nurses on strike (04:00); Izzy's failed attempt at being a White Savior (11:30); Leisha Haley and Sydney Heron Appreciation Hour (22:10); the comforting Ya Ya Sisterhood of Grace Bickham (35:20); and our BITS including some impromptu reactions to photos of necrotizing fascitis (51:10); and ruminations on our experiences at the Women's March (56:37).
Bonnie Bruckheimer began her cinematic career at Columbia Pictures and became known as one of Hollywood’s most successful producers. In 1985 she formed All Girl Productions, with partner Bette Midler, and made her debut as a film producer on Beaches. She is known for her work on Big Business, Hocus Pocus, Beaches, and Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, to name a few. She has worked with some of the best in Hollywood and has been nominated for two Emmys. She is currently an adjunct professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, where she teaches. She has also been a long-time volunteer and grief counselor at Our House and is the mother two. When I asked Bonnie if it took luck to succeed in show business this is only a part of what she believes it takes..."there is definitely a bit of being in the right place at the right time, but it’s much more about hard work and determination and deciding it’s something you want to do and nothing’s going to be able to stop you, and I tell my students now that if you are not passionate and you don’t have the feeling that you’ll die if you don’t get to do this, you won’t get to do it. Success is about determination." Bonnie is full of insight and wisdom. I hope you will join us for this weeks interview.
