Cyd Zeigler started OutSports in 1999, gradually shifting focus from “pro sports from a gay men's fandom angle” to all things LGBTQ++, including trans athletes. He joins the Dorx to argue for inclusion of male trans athletes in female categories. From chess to football, Zeigler believes every sport can and should be treated differently; that sex categories open up opportunities; and that both sides point to Title IX as the reason they're right. Nina pushes back on safety; Corinna introduces the idea of locus of control; and everyone agrees more data is needed. Cyd Zeigler, one of our co-founders, wrote an article about my guest in December. It was the first I heard of Jason Ellis. Since then I have taken in as much as possible. Listen to his show on Sirius XM, listened to his former podcast "High and Dry", read his first book "I'm Awesome" and his most recent "Still Awesome". Like we talk about the first few moments I even google imaged him and found photos of George Takei from Star Trek touching his penis. We talk about ALL of it in this one hour interview, including drug use, prostitution, sex with women and men and what it means to be a part of the LGBTQ community. While his evolution from straight guy to bi guy has been a long one, it has been a journey where he has had to learn. We talk about his old non-pc talk about trans men and women along the way. With all the stories Outsports runs about LGBT youth, it's gotten co-founders Jim Buzinski and Cyd Zeigler thinking about their own experiences growing up gay. We rarely talk about our experiences as gay youth and gay athletes, so today we dive into our personal stories in and outside of sports. It was a while back, but some of the stories they have are very similar to those we hear from gay teenagers and college athletes every day. There's the bullying (even if we didn't usually call it that back then), the name-calling, the slurs and the macho attitude that pervades sports. A lot of that hasn't changed, even if it has gotten better in certain areas. Some of the stories are also very different. Robert Griffin III tried to wear a T-shirt at a post-game Washington press conference until he was stopped by someone from the NFL or the team. The T-shirt said "Know Jesus Know Peace" and, simultaneously, "No Jesus No Peace."
