Millennials and Gen Z Want Us to Rethink Our Relationship with Work

A former factory worker in China, 31-year-old Luo Huazhong, made global headlines in April when he chose to “lie flat” and opt for working odd jobs and an overall slower lifestyle than is culturally accepted. It's a feeling that has resonated with many in the U.S., particularly millennials and Gen Z, who are leading what's been termed “The Great Resignation.” It's a phenomenon that's taken hold during this period of high employee turnover, as workers feel more confident in the economy and in making career changes that better meet their needs. Writers Cassady Rosenblum and LZ Granderson each reflect on this growing shift in Americans' relationship with work in recent essays, and they join us to discuss today's culture of work in the U.S. and consider the possibility of one that's less about “grinding” and more friendly to “lying flat.”

On Serve with LZ Granderson is a glimpse into the mind of a player. How do they manage their emotions during a match? What do they do for fun? How do they maintain a healthy mindset in a game that often times plays tricks on their mind. You don't have to be a tennis know-it-all to listen. You just have to be curious about the human spirit.

Host Beto Duran welcomes Sports & Culture columnist LZ Granderson to discuss a wide range of topics. The conversation starts with Granderson's recent story on Alex Cora's White House snub. As LZ often explores the territory beyond the X's and O's of sports that impacts culture, the conversation goes on a natural progression to where Beto and LZ cover many topics of the day and explore the history that brought us here. Later in the show, LZ and Beto examine what motivates Granderson to strive to be the journalist he is, when there are clearly easier routes to take and not speak up on the issues that Granderson seeks to explore.

Host Beto Duran welcomes Nathan Fenno and LZ Granderson to discuss a wide range of topics and people. Nathan starts the conversation with updates on Lynn Swann and USC before moving into the recent allegations surrounding high-profile attorney Michael Avenatti, NIKE, an Inglewood AAU team, and everything that comes with presence of big money in amateur sports. Then, LZ joins to discuss his recent story about the NZAA, replacing the C with a Z for Zion, another amateur athlete, who recently had a camera fixed on him the entire duration of an NCAA game. The tragic passing of LA rapper Nipsey Hussle has sent shockwaves through the local and hip hop communities, while also making a tremendous impact on athletes as well. We discuss how Nipsey was able to transcend his role as an artist into the lives of many athletes. Lastly, LeBron James' impact on Los Angeles (and vice versa) is discussed. All of these stories and discussions rise above the traditional X's and O's of sports discussions.

Reggie Love is a unique witness to history, whose introduction to Washington was working in Junior Senator Barack Obama’s mailroom. As “body man” to Obama during his first presidential campaign, Love’s job was to stay one step behind the candidate, but think and act three steps ahead during a typical eighteen-hour workday. As President Obama’s personal aide during that momentous first term, Love sat yards from the Oval Office and often spent more time with the President than anyone else. While his experiences were unique, the lessons he learned during his tenure with the President are universal. Persistence. Responsibility. Passion for a cause greater than yourself. In short, maturity. Reggie Love shared the lessons he has learned from serving the President and as captain of Duke’s basketball team with the Institute of Politics for this event. IOP Spring Quarter 2015 Fellow and ESPN columnist LZ Granderson led the discussion.
