In 1997, a scandal rocked the world of romance: Janet Dailey, one of the most successful and prolific romance authors of all time, got caught plagiarizing the work of Nora Roberts, one of the other most successful and prolific romance authors of all time. Before the scandal, Janet Dailey was the queen of American romance. Born in small-town Iowa, married in Omaha, and settled in Ozarks, she was a down-to-earth, blue-jeaned rebuttal to the only romance author that outsold her in the 70s and 80s: Barbara Cartland. In 1997 the Internet was in its infancy, so public memory of this scandal is fragmented. This is going to be a two-part episode, and in part one we are covering Dailey's life before she fell from grace for plagiarism. Make no mistake, this is not just boring backstory: this episode is about fame, country music, violence, and one very controversial husband. After the death of Edwina Mountbatten in 1960, Dickie still had another 19 years of living to do, and while he was single, he was in no way alone. He had romances with plenty of women in his later years, and according to many, he had male lovers - including, it is alleged, boys - as well. A mentor to Prince Charles, his advice to the young man may have contributed to what turned into the tragic marriage, divorce, and untimely death of Princess Diana, who was exactly the sort of woman that Dickie encouraged the playboy prince to settle down with. The men remained close through the end of Dickie's life, and Charles delivered the eulogy at both of Dickie's services in 1979. Dickie was clearly a charming older man who counted Shirley MacClaine, Barbara Cartland, Christina Ford, and Sacha Hamilton, Duchess of Abercorn, who was also his god daughter, among his paramours. Let's say it was all pretty complicated, but that would only be keeping with rest of his and Edwina's history. Listen ad-free at patreon.com/trashyroyalspodcast. Learn more about your ad choices. A little romance? What began as a fluff piece about an eccentric romance novelist turned into a snapshot of a century through the eyes of someone who lived it to the fullest.Meet Barbara Cartland: extravagant, exaggerated, and … pink. As author of 723 books, she remains the most prolific romance novelist of all time. If you've ever seen her, you won't likely forget her, dripping in jewels, layered in make up, clad in fuchsia, and riding in her classic white Rolls Royce.  We'll follow Barbara through the Great War, to 1920's London with the Bright Young Things, to writing, motherhood, political involvement, and World War II.  And she's just getting started, hitting the peak of her career in the 1980s, in her eighties. Along the way, we'll rub elbows, (well, maybe more than elbows) with movers and shakers of many decades.  For example, have you ever heard of Lord Beaverbrook? Also, you won't believe who joins the family in the 1970s!We wrap up with a game you can join in at home.  It's called Oh, Barbara. While we have little in common with Barbara, and share few of her opinions, we have to respect someone who called her own shots and refused to be sidelined as an octogenarian.  See our SHOW NOTES for photos, some quite rare, sources, and such.

If you were to ask someone in the 20th century what a romance novelist looked like, they'd likely have visions of pink chiffon, bright blue eyeshadow, false eyelashes, and excessive costume jewelry thanks to one woman: Barbara Cartland, who was dubbed by the Romantic Times as the “Queen of Romance.” Cartland was larger than life, but like most outsized figures, the “self-publicizing juggernaut' was also very controversial. From the 1920s until her death in the year 2000 she wrote over 700 novels, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. Season Three was during a pandemic, and celebrated that thing we were all desperate for—joy. Season Four introduced the Trailblazer episodes, where we featured interviews with the people who have built the romance house over the last fifty years. Season Five built on all of that, deep diving on books that are new and fabulous, old and transformative, and generally celebrating the vast and magnificent romance pool. Season six will do the same. We've got interstitials, trailblazers, read alongs and interviews planned, so head over to your favorite podcasting app and subscribe so you don't miss a minute. The season launches today with what we thing is an absolute banger—a trailblazer episode about Jackie Collins, legend, juggernaut, author and lady boss, who was gone too soon. We're so lucky to have had a chance to talk to Collins's daughters, Rory Green and Tiffany Lerman, who were immensely generous with their time and storytelling, to talk about their mother's life and work. We love this conversation, and are so grateful to Ms. Green and Ms. Lerman for their time. Our first read along of the season will be Laura Kinsale's Flowers from the Storm, available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, Kobo or from your local indie. If you want more Fated Mates in your life, you are welcome at our Patreon, which comes with an extremely busy and fun Discord community!

Happy Valentine's Day! This (bonus) episode is pretty much the opposite of the last one, as we go on an old-fashioned, romantic, and very silly playthrough of Barbara Cartland: A Romance Boardgame. This is a paragraph game based, as you might guess, on a few of Barbara Cartland's 700+ (!) romance novels. Since it's a paragraph game, there's a lot of reading and, well, none of us are actors or even audiobook narrators, so be prepared for a few rough patches. In our defense, the paragraphs in the game had a...lot...of ellipses in weird...places. Note: This game was published almost 35 years years ago, based on novels that were published 40+ years ago and set 100-200 years ago. The text contains some cultural insensitivity, a LOT of gender stereotyping, and at least one scene that today would be classified as sexual assault. The books and the game are products of their respective times, and while we can laugh about the old-fashioned ideas now, that certainly doesn't mean we approve or support that kind of behavior when there are any real people involved. We hope you understand. In case you're interested in checking out the source material (but beware spoilers!), the three stories we played through are based on: The Dangerous Dandy - Frank and Mike's storyline The Duchess Disappeared - Brian's storyline The Punishment of a Vixen - Jayson and Joe's storyline Also, here's the iTunes link for Barbara Cartland's album of love songs, and a recipe for Harira. (It'll make sense - well, maybe a tiny bit more sense - once you've heard the episode.) We'd love it if you'd give us a review on iTunes - it's one of the very best ways for us to find new listeners.
