In this thought-provoking episode of the Voices of Care podcast, Professor Joy Warmington, CEO of brap, discusses the critical issue of racism in healthcare with host Suhail Mirza. Warmington challenges conventional thinking, arguing that we must move beyond simply being "not racist" to actively "anti-racist." She unpacks complex topics including race as a social construct, systemic barriers in healthcare, and the distinction between transactional and transformational change. With a focus on creating truly inclusive environments, Warmington offers insights on courageous leadership and paints an inspiring vision for a more equitable NHS that confidently embraces its diversity.

Today's podcast: Iran is threatening direct mlitary action against Israel and in the next days with a representative of the Tehran regime saying an aerial attack on Israel by Iran might last 3-4 days, saying "bloodshed would be carried out"(against Israel). Expectation is Hezbollah may launch a full-scale assault on Israel in coming days. Meanwhile the U.S. has an aircraft carrier taskforce stationed off the coast of Iran, ready to stand by Israel if needed.  What would Israel expect from its long-time ally Canada if conflict breaks out? The Trudeau government has been openly critical of Israel most recently. Guest: Iddo Moed. Israel's Ambassador to Canada. The race riots in England have abated after strong action by the new Labour government of Keir Starmer took action against far-right demonstrators/rioters. Some arrested, charged, tried and convicted within 6 days last week. While the violence may have abated, it would be foolhardy to assume the anger against migrants, Britain's refugee and immigration policies has disappeared. So, what now? What next? Are the rioters themselves surprised at the level of participatory support they received? Also of concern, as reported by Global News today, is the growing anti-tourist sentiment appearing in Europe. Perhaps in Canada as well. Some has to do with short term rentals cutting into possible long-term rental housing. Guest: Katja Hoyer, Anglo/German historian and professor at Kings College, London. Author of Beyond The Wall: A History of East Germany. - Originator of the Zeitgeist blog. Ladies n' Genminminminmin (er, min...) please welcome Bristol Broadcasting Legend Keith Warmington legendary BBC Radio Bristol Presenter, Blues Harmonica Player, Voiceover Artist & Cycling Nut!Top bloke, top local Broadcaster and top local legend!   After 52 years in Bristol, the mellifluous Keith Warmington is an optimistic Francophile, who is on his way to becoming the finished article. He is a self-confessed "cycling nut", happy to be on the road for up to 3 hours on any day he chooses. Habitually he enjoys saying hello to people, counting local cranes on a regular basis and changing his spectacles every year. He also enjoys sharing chocolate cake in the Primrose Cafe. Keith does not yet have his own website but claims the BBC website's version of him is inaccurate. He was born in Camborne, not as a ‘chopper' in Redruth, as implied by the BBC. Keith started working with them in 1983, not 1993 as their website suggests. This programme is proud to set the record straight! Keith is a professional performer and harmonica player, who also plays the guitar. His great loves, apart from his lawyer wife and his grownup daughter, are recognising random road bikes and gazing at beautiful guitars. While still at school in Redruth, Keith was inspired by role-model folk singers like Mike Chapman and Ralph McTell in denim jackets, carrying their guitars around in cases. Later he was impressed by Tour de France competitors with their seemingly effortless energy and elegant sunglasses. Keith actually taught French for 9 years in Bristol before finding more fame and job satisfaction in broadcasting with the BBC. There, the late John Turner was his mentor. Keith remembers John's pragmatic advice:* Always know what you are going to do next* When the red light goes on, make sure you've got something to sayIt has stood him in good stead to this day. What Keith says is colourfully fluent and well worth listening to.  Hear for yourself, here. Thank you!

This is episode #17th of the podcast and it's Thursday, the 12th of May, 2022. I sat down with Dr. Sally Warmington, a retired medical doctor and narrative researcher from Melbourne, Australia with a deep interest in the encounter between health professionals and those seeking care. Her experiences as a doctor, student, teacher and patient inform her research at the intersection of anthropology, cultural theory and linguistics. Her book "Storytelling encounters as medical education: crafting relational identity" demonstrates the key role of storytelling in medical education and practice and its potential to promote collaborative, better quality care.We had a fascinating discussion on many important topics covered in Sally's book, but the episode went over the usual podcast duration, so I've decided to split it into two parts.  This is Part II.We continued our discussion from Part I on ethics in clinical practice, focusing on the concept of ‘ethical mindfulness' — how to bring in and apply ethical values in research. We then moved to the importance of medical students' reflective writing, process which allows students to become more aware of the emotional and relational aspects of the clinical encounter. And, in this context, we explored various options to the questions “Do patients' stories matter? And, are doctors aware of their importance?” Dr. Warmington argues for a universal adoption of practices that promote dialogic engagement between medical students, clinical teachers, and patients, giving us lots of examples from her own research and clinical experience. Here is the show.Show Notes:- ethical mindfulness in research and clinical practice- reflective writing in medical teaching practice- how should we approach medical care?- toward a universal adoption for practices that promote dialogic engagement between students, clinical teachers, and patients.- Can empathy be taught? (The need to look for another way of framing the issues around the clinical encounter)- detached concern vs. engagement practice in medical encountersNote:Link to Dr. Warmington's book:  "Storytelling encounters as medical education: crafting relational identity" is available on the Routledge website: https://www.routledge.com/Storytelling-Encounters-as-Medical-Education-Crafting-Relational-Identity/Warmington/p/book/9781032177007#Her research papers can be found on Google Scholar.

We started talking about the importance of storytelling in clinical context and that of identity work — how storytelling tells something about who we are in relation to others. The focus here is not only how people become doctors, but also what kinds of people emerge from contemporary clinical training and how students play an active part in their own identity construction. We also talked about the role the analyst plays in such research — their training, language, cultural orientation, memories as an investigator influencing the study. As investigators, Sally believes, we should apply what she calls “ethical mindfulness” — paying close attention to the participants, but also to our own sensations, perceptions and emotional responses, process which requires an acute self-awareness and an awareness of others. In Part II, we talked about the connection between storytelling and empathy, its role in clinical settings and medical education, and the importance of helping students develop an awareness of the emotional and relational aspects of the clinical encounter. This is Part I of the episode.Show Notes:- the role of stories and storytelling in clinical practice- identity construction; identity dissonance- empathy and the formation of professional identities - “ethical mindfulness” and cognitive and sensory self-awareness in clinical practice- the analyst's role in clinical researchNote:Link to Dr. Warmington's book:  "Storytelling encounters as medical education: crafting relational identity" is available on the Routledge website: https://www.routledge.com/Storytelling-Encounters-as-Medical-Education-Crafting-Relational-Identity/Warmington/p/book/9781032177007#

When they couldn't find a babysitter, they brought their two-month-old child, Jacob.  “Mother” may soon be replaced in Ontario law by the term “birth parent.” That's what's incorporated in amendments contained in the Liberal government's proposed Bill 28 which is designed to change the “Children's Law Reform Act, the Vital Statistics Act and various other acts respecting parentage.” Premier Kathleen Wynne's government says a new All Families Are Equal Act will modernize the definition of families. Justin Trudeau, self-described "feminist", went along with three of his female caucus colleagues and MPs being required to enter an Ottawa mosque through the side door and stand, segregated from the PM and men at the mosque. Trudeau said at the mosque, "diversity is a source of strength, not just a source of weakness, and as I look at this beautiful room - sisters upstairs - " And how do the three women Liberal MPs feel ("sisters upstairs")? Guests:  Dr. Zuhdi Jasser, founder of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy,  Author of Battle for the Soul of Islam, and former U.S. Navy Lt. Commander and past president of the Arizona Medical Association Asra Nomani, former Wall Street Journal reporter, self-defined as a liberal and author of Standing Alone: An American Woman's Struggle for the Soul of Islam - Michelle Simson, a former Liberal MP, encountered a situation at a mosque where she was segregated from men and felt very uncomfortable.  It was the mosque attended by the family of Omar Khadr. Michelle was Justin Trudeau's seatmate in parliament for a number of years. Guest: Michelle Simson - Dr. Kellie Leitch is contesting the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada and creating controversy with her cornerstone platform that newcomers to Canada should be screened to determine whether they oppose or support Canadian values. This week, Leitch was dismissed as a potential leader of the party by Kevin O'Leary and severely criticized by former Conservative PM Brian Mulroney. Leitch is standing firm and joins us to tell us why the criticism of O'Leary, Mulroney and others won't deter her. Guest; Dr. Kellie Leitch. CPC MP - Tony Clement was a senior cabinet minister in the Stephen Harper federal government and is also running for leadership of the CPC. Clement is courting controversy by calling for the jailing of individuals in Canada deemed to be a terror threat, who cannot be monitored because of a shortage of personnel to do so. Guest: Tony Clement, CPC MP - The book “Ford Nation: Two Brothers - One Vision, The True Story of the People's Mayor”, written by Doug and Rob Ford, will be released November 22. Guest: Doug Ford - 23% of the population of Switzerland is made up of foreigners. Net immigration is 1% of the nation's population, three times more than that of Germany. According to the EU, 230,000 foreign citizens cross the border to work in Switzerland every day. In 2009, the Swiss People's Party launched a national referendum initiative "against the construction of minarets" and won with 57.5% of the national popular vote. In 2010, the Swiss People's Party's national initiative to "expel criminal foreigners" also won, with 52% of the national vote. And in 2014, the Swiss People's Party's national initiative "against mass immigration" was also successful, with 50.3% of the national population supporting the initiative. Luzi Stamm, VP of the Swiss People's Party said after the vote that Switzerland should "have the right to control its own immigration." The European Commission issued a statement that it was "disappointed" in the Swiss decision on immigration. Just what does the Swiss decision mean for Europe and does it have implications for the rest of the Western world? Guest: Luzi Stamm, vice president of the Swiss People's Party and architect of the initiative "against mass immigration" to Switzerland - Hector MacMillan, an Ontario Mayor battling pancreatic cancer, shares in detail how he has suspended his fight with the government of Ontario for out of province/out of Canada IRE Nanoknife surgery to remove his cancer.  Instead Mayor MacMillan, who accuses the Ontario government of sentencing him to die, as well as all other pancreatic cancer patients in need of IRE surgery, is now going to Germany to have the IRE surgery done there. Then, he says, he will return and deal with the Ontario government and OHIP. Hector MacMillan, the Mayor of Trent Hills, Ontario, has stage 4 pancreatic cancer and without immediate high tech surgery to excise the tumour he will die and quickly. In the U.S. the cancer is available in a matter of days, but OHIP won't pay for the Mayor's out of province surgery. Joe Warmington wrote in the Toronto Sun, that Mayor MacMillan tweeted he has been "essentially murdered by a corrupt, rigged political system." and "out of country funding program will pay to remove my penis, but not my cancer tumour."  The Ontario Health Minister has responded to the Mayor by talking about "giving opportunities to individuals like yourself, particularly life-saving opportunities" re funding out-of-province health care" but only by "decisions based on best practices and science and evidence."  Guests: Hector MacMillan, Mayor of Trent Hills Joe Warmington, Toronto Sun columnist - Should all MPs be required to post all expense spending online? The federal Liberals have been nabbed again for dubious expense spending. Environment Minister Catherine McKinnon hired a freelance photographer for $6000+ to take pictures of her 'working' at the COP21 Climate conference in Paris. PM Trudeau laments "long standing government policies" which cause this and other expense-claiming. So the rules required this spending? Guest: Michelle Simson, former Liberal MP and Trudeau seatmate in Question Period - Massive quake in Italy claims hundreds of lives and destroys towns and villages which have stood for hundreds of years.  How safe is Canada from quakes?  Much of this country (including this part of Ontario) is on major fault lines and the Cascadia fault in California, Oregon, Washington State and B.C., when it rumbles massively will cause destruction almost unimaginable. And we're not prepared.  Prepar-ing.....but not prepared. Guest:  Dr. John Cassidy, research scientist and international earthquake expert with the Geological Survey of Canada in B.C.   - A University of Virginia lacrosse player sentenced to 23 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend. Both had been binge drinking and the lacrosse playing student says he is innocent. And odd things happened prior to George Huguely's murder trial.    Binge drinking at universities has been in the news since Brock Turner made international headlines when the Stanford University student was stopped in the act of raping an unconscious woman said to have been at a party where binge drinking was happening. This week, Stanford University banned undergrads from drinking any spirits on campus and grad students from drinking hard liquor unless they're mixed at campus parties. Guest: Mathew D.
