Tim Worthington has a new book out called The Golden Age Of Children's TV - all about the best, worst and most just plain baffling shows you grew up with in the sixties, seventies and eighties - and the lines are open now for an hour of fun, facts, laughs and thrills. Joanne Sheppard will be dropping in to follow some unreasonably cryptic - and unreasonably perilous - clues left by Sherlock Holmes for The Baker Street Boys. For all you budding Doc Crocs out there, Ben Baker has a few tips on how to get ahead in actual literal gutter journalism in Round The Bend. Ricardo Autobahn will be putting his pop chart stardom to good use by becoming the latest third member of Rod, Jane And in Rainbow. Carrie Dunn has a few tips on why girls are smarter than boys and she's seen Maid Marian And Her Merry Men to prove it, and Georgy Jamieson is ready to take your calls about the philosophical ramifications of citrus milkshakes in Bod. So if you want to join in the fun - or just swap a copy of The Giant Spitting Image Komic Book for Derek Griffiths' Bent Outta Shape - ring the show now!You can get The Golden Age Of Children's TV in all good bookshops, from Amazon here or directly from Black And White Publishing here - and if you want to know more about what you can find in it, head for timworthington.org!
When it comes to creative partnerships, Standard Issue fave Helen Lewis is more interested in The Krankies than Beyoncé and Jay Z. In this week's podzine, she got on the Zoom with Hannah to talk about the second series of her Radio 4 show Great Wives, as well as the upcoming 2024 US election. Meanwhile, Mick chats to theatremaker Elisabeth Gunawan about dark clowning, mail order brides, cultural stereotypes and her award-winning play, Unforgettable Girl. In Jenny Off The Blocks, there's World Cup fever, as well as the cycling world championships. And in Rated or Dated, a melodramatic masterpiece and some objectifiable eyes, as the team revisits 1958's Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Plus there's dodgy policing and dated Disney in the Bush Telegraph.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Today on Television Times we welcome the talented Mr Paul Critoph, a man of many talents. Paul is a brilliant actor, sensational photographer, and writer of the most gripping reviews of television and film, therefore it seemed silly not to get him on early. He even has his own grading system for such things! I worked with Paul on a number of pantomimes just over a decade ago and have remained firm friends ever since. We chat about his role in Dr Who plus his numerous TV and film roles, including chasing Chiwetel Ejiofor down an alleyway in Kinky Boots. We also discuss unsavoury character names, Paul's ability to quote The Krankies word for word, and the beauty of gentle Japanese television. We also touch upon 1980s animation which both had the ability to create a stirring within, whilst also giving us cold war dreams about nuclear annihilation. Paul is a very funny man who will no doubt have you guffawing throughout. This is easily one of the most enjoyable episodes so far and one I keep listening to just for fun. At one point Paul mentions his old instagram handle which has now been changed (link below). There's a little extra material at the end, so it might be time to investigate Patreon. Please follow the show wherever you get podcasts and leave a review so we can keep growing.Follow us on Instagram & Twitter (links below):All music written and performed in this podcast by Steve Otis Gunn,Please buy my book 'You Shot My Dog and I Love You' available in all good book shops and online.Podcast Socials:Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@tvtimespodInsta: https://www.instagram.com/tvtimespodYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@tvtimespodTwitter: https://twitter.com/tvtimespodSteve's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/steveotisgunnTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/steveotisgunnFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/steveotisgunn.antisocialPaul's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/paulcritophTwitter: https://twitter.com/PaulCritophFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/paul.critophProduced by Steve Otis Gunn for Jilted Maggotwww.jiltedmaggot.com Hosted on Acast. Football is a sport. It's something Paul & Eli know very little about, but here we are, talking about sport. Kinda. This week is a Silverman's Platter bonanza where we tackle 3 very different types of vinyl oddities. This week, we look into the odd musical career of 1980s comedy double act, The Krankies, we dive into the surprisingly deep history of The Birdie Song and end by exploring the weird popularity of the UK Football team pop single trend. It yields some very interesting facts and fancies. Remember, Paul and Eli know nothing about footy, so we apologise in advance for continuously calling the song "Three Lions" "Four Lions". It's a packed pod, but you also get a quick dose of noodle news, hear about Eli's new anxiety dream and find out what he thinks an old lady should do with a hot dog. So there's that. Join us! Join Wendi and Sarah as they try Krankies coffee, a local Winston Salem favorite.
Visual Artist/Photographer/Educator/Humanist www.owensdaniels.com Owens Daniels shared his love of Winston Salem outside Krankies (www.krankiescoffee.com) prior to a new photography exhibit. We talked about Covid, the protests, where he finds inspiration, his favorite things to photograph and ....walking around downtown with a toilet on rollers. I learned what true activism is by being a humanist. He cares, he loves and he takes awesome pictures. His day gave him a piece of advice that he follows to this day. "Everybody has a story to tell" son tell what you see. Please listen and enjoy. Special thanks to our sponsor of this week's episode of the chat: Smitty's Notes! There is a school in Brighton where 70 primary school pupils have been allowed to regard themselves as "gender fluid".....so they are no longer girls or boys....and...wait for it....a university in London has banned the word "woman" because it has "man" in it...a woman is now womXn....so there you go....one of the many problems I have with stupid feminists etc is kids are an easy target as they are impressionable at a young age and can easily be manipulated...try telling a rugby scrum they are "gender fluid"...especially if you are holding the ball...........and by putting them on a pedestal simply reveals their feet of clay....again the media need to wake up and stop giving these idiots publicity. This week I thought we could talk about the future of the world.....starting with the arrival of electric cars....apparently according to the internet these will take over thus we will see the end of petrol stations and repair shops as we know them....the petrol engine has 20,000 separate parts...the electric engine has 20....and it can be removed and replaced quickly.....oil companies will struggle as will parts manufacturers......it was the same with digital photography....there was a lot of doubt at the time when digital cameras came on the scene....who would have thought in 1998 that you would never take another photo on film ever again.....I remember Kodak trying to convince everyone that film was better quality than digital....then they went under....there is no comparison............. ........the speed of modern technology is frightening.....when I first built my recording studio in 1980 everything went on to tape.....and you had to get it right....nowadys you can delete stuff and bring it back if you change your mind and you can move sections around....you can literally make a record in your bedroom.....vinyl is making a bit of a comeback but I think it will only be temporary. .....The legal industry is due to take a fall according to the experts.....you will be able to find all you need to know on Google....so solicitors and barristers will be unable to rip us off like they have been doing throughout history....similar to the medical profession as you can now virtually diagnose yourself on your computer.....so it looks like we are in for a few changes....... .On the showbiz front I watched the Prince Charles celebration at The Palladium on TV...and I enjoyed it.....they should have more entertaining variety on instead of boring cookery programmes and rubbish reality shows with serious none celebs trying to make a name for themselves..............The Krankies phoned me up the other night ...they require a song for their panto in Glasgow...I'll tell you about it tomorrowHi Vince...the song this week is called The Dudley Newtown Stage which has a very interesting story behind it

This week Natalie & Colin discuss Glasgow City Council's female work force and their fight for equal pay, the Krankies are back in panto, a stink bomb closes down a Paisley pub and as Halloween approaches we've been debunking myths about the town's witch trials.
This week there's a shift in dynamic as Luke is away and a guest (resident question Sheriff, Dan) enters the studio - it's like there's two Ron's. - They kick the week off as they almost always do with questions, and one comes in from a very famous celebrity that we're assuming is currently on tour, which is "Who should replace Henry Cavill?" - They move swiftly on to what game makes them rage the most and the ridiculous things they've done during said rage, but then calm down by talking about their favourite toy lines. Ron gushes about Idol.Mind (@Idol.Mind on Instagram). - Toby and Dan try their damnedest to list off the original Transformers, and float down a river of nostalgia, then struggle to name the Ghostbusters (Ban Aykroyd). - The Black Mirror "pig intercourse to save a Princess" scenario is pondered, and should Gambit be a Romantic Comedy? - They try to stay on topic while they talk about the Dark Phoenix trailer, but fail miserably as they can't seem to stay away from The Krankies. - Things come crashing down as the demise of Telltale Games is discuss. RIP Telltale. - They stay on point with the next trailer, Bumblebee, and once again, Transformers are listed. Sticking with trailers, they talk Creed 2. - Cheeky bit of Cosby. - The entire episode is wrapped up in an unconventional way with a sneaky ending question, but don't think they're done, because there is a little bit of extra content after the "credits", Marvel style. - Want to contact the boys? .While sifting through the rubbish we are subjected to on television I actually found a program I enjoyed....it was the story of Jimmy Perry and David Croft who created Dad's Army....it was about the struggle they had to get it off the ground...and the two actors who played them were really good and the chap who played Captain Mainwaring was spot on....it was a brilliant insight into problems of trying to convince TV boffins of the credibility of good comedy...boffins who can't see further than the end of their noses......the pair went on to write Hi-de-Hi which is also classic comedy........................and another interesting documentary was the story of Fawlty Towers...another classic...it was interesting to see how John Cleese stopped after the second series as he felt it had run its course...a wise decision....unlike "Benidorm" which started well but has now reached rock bottom....definitely well past its sell-by date.....sadly great comedy is a thing of the past. 2.I thought after his appearance on Strictly Come Dancing Ed Balls would vanish off the scene....how wrong I was....he features in a new documentary called Travels in Trumpland with Ed Balls....where he travels around the southern states of the U.S.A. meeting Donald Trump supporters......and is he a dark horse or what....he got involved in wrestling...gun handling and even trained with the police and volunteered to be tazered....very impressive stuff which will be the making of him...I now see him in a totally different light....Go Ed !!! 3.Rick Astley was on the Zoe Ball show on Saturday morning....he is going back on tour to promote his latest album....which he made in his garage.....he is a really good personality and is quite modest....he talked about the occasional problems of doing concerts which I can relate to...because of the success of his album he intends to go back into his garage and make another one...a man after my own heart....I built a recording studio in my attic back in the day as I failed to see what difference Abbey Road would make to my records....nowadays with modern technology you can make a record on a computer in your bedroom....so I'm afraid it's goodbye to the greedy major labels....who needs 'em. 4.It is nice to see my pales The Krankies on the Marigold Hotel programme....they really are a lovely couple whom I have known for around 20 years and have written many songs for them which they have used in their many pantomimes over the years............also Donald Campbell's Bluebird has been restored and put back on the water....I actually have a connection to this....back in 1958 I saw a skiffle group called The Atlantics on our local cinema which was the first time I heard an electric guitar on stage....the leader of the group was called John Lomax and he went on to make a cine film of Cambell's last tragic attempt at the world water speed record in the Lake District....the film won several awards and his story was featured in a programme called "Days That Changed The World" a while back...with an actor playing John.....in the mid nineties I met John and we became very good friends....we even formed a skiffle group in 2001 and played at the International Skiffle Convention in Finland.....he was a great guy and a good friend but is sadly no longer with us...as a small tribute I wrote a song for him called "The Story of Skiffle" which we recorded and got quite a bit of airplay. 5.Skiffle was the beginning of it all in tis country so the song this week is in memory of my pal ......."The Story of Skiffle" by Skiffle John Lomax.....a great friend who I still miss.

The song this week is one I have found in my archives and had completely forgotten about...it is called "Nosey Parker" and is one of the many I wrote for The Krankies yearly pantomimes....this one was Pinochio....and wee Jimmy (aka Janette) had the title role.....each year they would ask me for an original song or songs...and I would demo it as simple as possible for them to give to the panto MD....when she sang the song the nose would get longer and longer until it was the length of the stage....all good stuff....They are good friends. How pathetically transparent are the BBC...suddenly they have decided to play Cliff Richard's latest album...hmm...I wonder why?...I suppose the school leavers who seem to run the organisation think Cliff might change his mind about taking them to court...I hope Cliff has the guts to take them to the cleaners after the way he was treated...along with the gutter press which have a similarity to reading a piece of used toilet paper.....actually the album is very good....pure rock and roll....which makes a nice change from the latest deluge of moaning whinging ballads we seem to be getting subjected to.....I was unfortunate to watch the U.K. top forty at a recent dinner party...what a load of rubbish.....quality music R.I.P. I often wonder at the mentality of those who steal from charity...the latest is the sale of the ornamental poppies from the Palace....apparently only one third of the money raised went to charity instead of the lot....so some low life has made a lot of money....these people should be investigated and have their faces all over the media....just to let people know what scum they are......when I watch the TV appeals like Children in Need it is awful to think all these problems could be solved by the filthy rich who stain our shores....the problems could be solved without them even missing the money...but I suppose they have to have a few yatchts and mansions to survive. Now there is a petition on the internet regarding closing shops on Boxing Day....our wonderful public think they should close so people could spend time with their families instead of shopping...this was discussed on the morning TV...is it me or have we gone completely round the bend?...the big stores are criticised because the staff have to work over the holiday...and....wait for it....people will go out shopping because that's when they get a bargain....it is obviously far to difficult for the sheep to stay at home when the shops are open....and what about none Christians?...as if the big stores will take a blind bit of notice...and as if the government will make it illegal to open on Boxing Day...I really do despair sometimes. The BBC have renamed the Radio 2 building Wogan House after Terry Wogan which is a nice thing to do...he was much respected and I watched a tribute programme from the Albert Hall which was very good...possibly could have done without Olly Murs singing swing but very nice....personally I was never a fan of Sir Terry but he obviously had a big impact on his fellow workers.....great show and the remains of Take That did a great spot as did The Vamps....and lastly they are back....the highly talented Ant and Dec...NOT.....they have apparently signed a three million pound deal with ITV....as I have said in the past if they do have any talent whatsoever it's beyond ME...they are now appearing on the celebrity jungle thing where they do an hour and a half of unfunny nonsense then go and play golf....well worth the money eh?

The song this week is a demo I found in the drawer which I had forgotten about….it’s called “Nosey Parker” and was a song I wrote for The Krankies a while back….it was for their panto where Janette played Pinocchio and sang it in the show….I remember her saying how they laughed at the way I sang “church”…and “perch”. I have written a lot of songs for them over the years but I have only seen them do one live….it was for a show in Blackpool where she wanted a mickey take of “I’m a Barbie Girl”….I came up with “I’m a boobie Girl”…which involved Jan coming on with these enormous inflatable boobs which went bigger and bigger as the song went on…it was hilarious. The floods have been unbelievable in Cumbria….people losing everything… I’m wondering whether all those countries we send money to will be having a collection for these poor folk….I very much doubt it. People have to place their belongings outside their property so the insurers can check….and there have been reports of some of it being stolen by organised looters … some really nice people around eh? One man was moving his furniture out and left his sons wheelchair on the pavement…and it was stolen by a passing car…even if you catch this scum they will probably get away with a warning….they should string them up in the street and hand out baseball bats.. Also in the Midlands there have been workers trying to get the power back into the town and…wait for it….parking attendants are slapping tickets on there cars while they are working…great stuff eh? I’m all for legal parking but when roads are under 4 feet of water I think a little bit of common sense is required…..the council however are apparently panicking to waive the fines…out of embarrassment….problem is you give a moron a bit of power and it goes to their head. I went over to Liverpool last Tuesday afternoon and the place was buzzing…..the atmosphere was electric….there were groups busking in the streets….top quality stuff too…and there’s even an outdoor ice rink down by Albert Dock….I met up with a pal of mine and we went for a pint and a bite to eat in The Pumphouse in Albert Dock…which you will know…and the value was top notch…hence the place was full. It’s nice to see the City doing so well…it’s a pleasure to go there. A few years back I decided to finish gigging…after my 50th consecutive new years eve bash….so going out is no longer an option….nice meal…bottle of wine … and a bit of telly. Looking back to the days when my band played from 8 til 2 in the morning I shudder. I watched the fireworks on TV at midnight … I wondered how much that lot cost?....and how about the high rise in Dubai going up in flames?...what is it made of balsa wood?

The song I’ve sent you this week is a demo from way back with an interesting tale….I originally wrote it for Cannon and Ball who I understood liked it but I didn’t like hanging about in those days waiting for people to make their minds up…so I dropped a cassette of the song off at one of our local theatres where The Krankies were performing….soon after I got a nice letter from them saying they would like to put the song in their act….so there I was watching the Royal Command on the Palladium and on they come and sing the song….they also did it on several TV shows….about 10 years later I was on the same show as them and made myself known and we became good friends and I have been writing songs for their pantomimes ever since….never heard from Cannon and Ball….I think they recorded “Wind Beneath My Wings” instead,,,which got nowhere…shame. .There are moves afoot to teach young learner drivers how to drive properly….as there have been so many accidents with newly qualified drivers……this has to be a good thing because the quality of driving…especially from the young…is terrible….they are also considering halving the drink drive limit….not before time I got done a few years back for speeding (35 in a thirty limit)….and I had a choice pay the 60 quid fine and get three points on my licence…or pay 90 quid and go on a course and not get the three points….so off I went on the course with the intention of letting them know I was a professional driver with 45 years experience and NO-ONE could tell me how to drive….how wrong I was….the course was brilliant and I learnt so much…THIS is what is required for everyone as far as I’m concerned….then perhaps some of these would be would Lewis Hamiltons may live longer. I watched a programme on 20 things which rocked the world…..we were reminded of Diana’s crash….the sinking of the Belgrano….the Lockerby disaster…and quite high up the list was DAVID BECKHAM’S alleged affair with Rebecca Loos….so this amazing, unbelievable event ROCKED THE WORLD!!!....am I missing something??? here’s me thinking Beckham is an over-rated,overpaid so called celeb with not a lot of brain cells married to another celeb who needs to EAT!!!.....but there you go…I MUST be wrong....and that is why journalism is in the state its in….I doubt if anyone could care whether Mr.Beckham slept with the Queen of Sheba. Then we have Sterling who wants to leave Liverpool because he’s not happy with his 100 thousand pounds a WEEK…I’m sure the queue for the food banks will be delighted for him. I hate to say it but I do enjoy the Eurovision….it’s a great spectacle and we don’t have to endure a bunch of talentless plonkers passing judgement….I quite like our entry although it’s a bit dated..but that could be a good thing….I haven’t seen it performed which is usually what it’s all about…as with the bearded lady….no doubt the vote will be political as usual but it’s still good entertainment…ANYTHING but Britain’s Got Talent!!....however I have seen half of one of the semi finals…..I couldn’t face the second half…so I might be switching channels ... finally…this weekend the THREE QUEENS will be sailing down the Mersey….and I am NOT talking about You,Me and Dave O’Connor!!!....it’s The Queen Victoria, the Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mary…so there will be a lot of spectators along both sides of the River….it should be a great spectacle…. .... there was a strange case of a firm being taken to court because they refused to make a wedding cake for a gay marriage….they said it was against their Christian belief…and the court ruled in favour of the customers….saying the firm were discriminating against gays…..what a load of tripe…..a contract is made when you purchase something…there has to be an offer and acceptance….the offer is not made by the seller as everyone thinks…they merely display their wares and invite the BUYER to make an offer which they can either accept or refuse…that’s it….the firm should have just said “no” and that would have been that…there doesn’t have to be a reason….so the court got it wrong I’m afraid.

The song I’ve sent you this week was the extended version of a jingle I did for Norman Thomas on Radio City. It was for a daily competition he used to have on his programme called “What have I got in my hand” whereby he would give out clues as to what he was holding and the public phoned in with their guesses….the winner getting 20 quid. It was really funny stuff and Norman did a great job…he sadly died a few years ago….I did quite a bit of stuff for him…he was a great bloke I watched the Michael Buble Christmas show just before Xmas and was well impressed…I thought it was real quality…unlike the John Bishop comedy show…whatever happened to FUNNY…he wasn’t even slightly funny and the string of comedians he had on weren’t much better….these guys are in serious need of good comedy writers…they seem to think they can do it on their own…they are wrong. I went up to Carnforth in The Lake District for a few days up to Xmas Eve to take in the ambience….it BUCKETED down so Bowness didn’t look too Chistmassy….then we spent a reasonably dry day in Lancaster…which is one of my favourite cities….it has a certain magical charm about it with it’s collection of shops and restaurants and the wonderful castle…great place to visit. I wish someone would start a movement to ban played out Christmas records on TV and radio….while travelling up to the Lakes we had radio 2 on….one after the other…simply having a wonderful Christmas time…all I want for Christmas is you….have yourself a merry little Christmas…etc etc etc…for goodness sake GIVE US A BREAK !!!…is there no imagination in the world…there MUST be new songs out there…thank goodness it’s over…I can’t take much more. The Krankies panto in Glasgow has received great reviews…they were on with John Barrowman in Cinderella….the panto includes all sorts of effects including 3D….where a giant spider wreaks havoc over the audience…The Krankies are friends of mine and I have written loads of stuff for them over the years…for this panto I wrote a parody of Miley Cirus’s “wrecking ball”…...I’d be on for a free ticket but it’s a bit far away.

A lot of euphoria newswise at the moment…with the release of the SAS guy who had a gun he shouldn’t have had.....he was given a gun as a gift when he was in Afganistan (or somewhere) and he brought it back here by mistake and the military gave him 18 months jail.... he’s out of jail on a suspended sentence. A friend went to The Echo Arena to see the “Once in a lifetime tour”…starring Smokie…Hot Chocolate…Leo Sayer…and David Cassidy…she said she couldn’t wait for it to finish….mind you she is only 40… However another mate went to see Marty Wilde on the Phil… Don's written a song for The Krankies for their Xmas Panto in Glasgow….Jack and The Beanstalk…..with John Barrowman…..the song is about the Scottish Olympic medal winners.Don's also about to embark on a doowop song for a guy he met over the net in Cleveland Ohio……The Wednesday night jam sessions are going well….what is fascinating is you think you know songs you’ve played for years until you do the same song with someone else in a different key……Don's lad has just completed a 12 mile organised mud run…….12 miles crawling through mud and carrying logs over electrified fences etc…..arranged by the Army…who else?
The Krankies have recorded the song Don sent them for the Panto in Glasgow…and he's also working on a project for a young girl . Don's working on an album of original doowop songs…Bonfire night came and went…with the usual injuries around the area….. why do the morons throw bricks at the fire engines?... There is a woman in the States who has set up a business….she will cuddle you for an hour for $35…..ONLY a cuddle...Don thinks controlling one’s instincts for an hour is asking a lot. .. we are in for a load more ALLEGATIONS…. Eddie Izzard was on the tele today…what an incredible bloke….he is about to tour the world with his comedy which he does in different languages... AND he ran 50 consecutive marathons……the guy is superhuman and very clever…... do you watch Strictly Come Dancing? The orchestra are a bit special and did you know that the black guy on vocals is Lionel Hampton’s son?.....and we discussed the time share hard sellers last week……I ended up with free car hire…Sony walkmans …and bought nothing…the secret will be revealed in this podcast
2012 #16: Weasel Prophylactic - Nick Helm and Jay Foreman. Rich is husky and ill and worrying about the parallels between his life and the fate of Rodney Bewes and trying to live his life vicariously through the life of his audience by fixing up random people based on what they've got in their hair. Colin is back on the front row, which freaks out Nick Helm as he was recently on the front row of his audience too, but he manages to recover his wits to talk about Winchester college, eating found Chinese takeaway, as well as being forced to field all the regular questions from the various podcasts. Rich further examines his Krankies tribute act (no news on if Susan Calman is up for it) and gets cross about the Independent slightly making stuff up about him. With music from Jay Foreman.
Dutch cannibals, teacher's brain exploding and Christmas parties. FA Cup, purple kids and what if you had 10 million in your account? Film piracy, throwin darts in to the crowd and soul singers doing Christmas songs. Morning TV, steam mops and Aeroplanes. Hamilton Island, The Krankies are swingers and is Jon Bon Jovi dead? Stella's sister phones mid-podcast and Hamilton folks.
Fandabbydozy:Episode One Hundred And TwentyEverything from The Krankies to The Terminator. With Cher and Jeff Bridges in between.
In their first ever podcast, Andy and Spence choose a category from the hat of destiny and stumble across Beefs with Films. A rambling topic that will reveal their thoughts on straight to DVD movies, sex tapes and the Krankies. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/soh/message
