Getting back into some low ABV beers again. Danish brewers Gamma and Fano Bryghus teamed up to create what some call a shandy, others call a radler. We call it Fruit Suit. This clocks in at a 2.7% ABV and blends grapefruit and orange into a tasty mix. Because Martin likes to watch Stefan recoil in horror, he didn't hesitate to bring a guava beer. Scotish brewery Williams Bros released Che Guava Radical Lager. It's a 3.5% ABV gluten-free lager with lots of guava. Decisions were made...we aren't sure why. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #lowabvbeer #shandy #radler #lager

In this episode we head North of the border as we focus on two lesser told stories in Scotland, Gretna and Hearts. The pair will forever be entwined by the 2006 Scottish Cup final but that is where the similarities end. Gretna, Scotish minos rising through the ranks thanks to Brooks Mileson's injection of ambition and a fair bit of cash ending in a red letter day at Hampden Park. Tragedy followed for Gretna but the ride is something from a fairytale. Hearts on the other hand led by Vladimir Romanov with his eccentric, endlessly quotable antics driving the Jam Tarts to the top. The drama filled-story of two well meaning owners who took too much on.

Investigation into Flannel You are listening to the Informal investigation podcast This is the podcast where we investigate, experience, and share interesting finds My name is Asher and lets begin ::Music:: The informal investigation podcast is for entertainment purposes only. We are not responsible if you mess up. You should always do your own homework. If you try anything mentioned on this podcast you are doing so at your own risk. The views presented on this podcast are solely those of the speakers and do not represent any affiliated or unaffiliated organizations. ::music:: Today we are opening an informal investigation into Flannel In case you have been isolating super hard and don't get out much - Let me be the one to tell you flannel season 2020 is here! As you're getting geared up with your favorite soft, warm, and colorful winter garments Do you find yourself asking yourself - Self? What, when, how, and why did we all get flannelized!? Flannel is a soft woven fabric, yep a soft woven fabric, It's really that simple! Originally it was made from wool but now it's made from wool, cotton, synthetic fiber, and I think you can even get it made out of some kind of vegetation. So! What makes it so soft? 2 things It is loosely spun and Flannel can be brushed for extra softness. What happens is a fine metal brush scrapes the material raising fine fibers creating a nap - which is just a fancy word for a raised fuzzy surface What about the pattern? Does it need to be tartan? I know big words. Tartan is that classic pattern seen on flannel shirts with criss crossed horizontal and vertical bands of different colors. The answer to this is no. Flannel is just the soft fuzzy material that is fuzzified using the 2 methods we just mentioned. ::music:: But tartans! Common now! Tartans deserve a little side tract here. Tartans have a rich history in Scotland. Each clan was represented by a different tartan pattern. Believe it or not you can officially register your own pattern today no matter where in the world you live, who your ancestors are, or your personal feelings on flannel - that's equal opportunity for ya. Just go to tartanregister.gov.uk and make it official. It seems you design a weave, then name it, and register it for the meer price of 70 pounds. You should prob check that no one has already registered your tartan or your application can be rejected and you will be chased down by an angry Scotish clan. Of Course, I immediately started sketching out my tartan but tartans are going to have to have their own episode. This is about flannel! My first exposure to flannel was from Osh Kosh Bigosh before I can even remember. My first memorable flannel experience was in grade school. My mom bought me a wardrobe full of beautiful flannel. It's warm, soft, and colorful - what could go wrong, rite? Unfortunately my esteemed grade school colleagues did not feel the same way. At that time I suppose flannel was not the coolest thing. I was made fun of a bit and some people called me raymor and flanneligan haha i know. Fortunately, I was always a big dude so there was a limit to how far they were willing to take this. I don't actually remember caring all that much but it likely made an impression because my next phase was Hawaiian shirts which are so not fuzzy they feel slick. As you can tell I was always the super cool kid. ::music:: I was trying to figure out the origin story of flannel but I was not able to find all that much. There is no official book on flannel and when you google it you find vague stories by every company that sells flannel. After reading the same useless information 25 times I gave up and went with what I had. The party line seems to be flannel is of welsh origin sometime in the 17th century. Makes sense...

The History Behind Game of Thrones The North Remembers David Weinczok is back so - "LET'S GEEK OUT ON CASTLES!" David is a Canadian born, castle enthusiast, daily found waist high in nettles, tramping the ground of a Scottish castle. There are approximately 2,000 castles to conquer and David has put (to date) 400 under his own foot. Powered by a passion for history, and a love for the environment David gets to most of these sites via bicycle. David has yet to find a dragon in his journeys. However, the patterns he noticed and the history he uncovered made him literally jump out of his seat watching Game of Thrones. He was watching a fictionalized explainer on the actual events of Scottish history and folklore. https://files.fireside.fm/file/fireside-uploads/images/0/037e01ef-c3bb-4048-9bb2-f57e8e9144e2/tsFiUTn-.jpg (https://nordvpn.com/?utm_medium=affiliate&utm_term&utm_content&utm_campaign=off&utm_source=aff) There was a tourism companion to be written and a map to be drawn! David took on this challenge and the result is the newly released, "The History Behind Game of Thrones The North Remember" and the, "Scotland and the Lands Beyond The Wall Map". Both the book and the map aim to help enthusiasts visit the real life Scotish locations that inspired many parts of Game of Thrones. PART 1: Today's episode will feature two chapters from David's book and the Map. The next episode will feature two more. I editing I noticed that it was really long and wanted to make a clean break for listener ease. David also talks about his "fan boy" moment while observing Game of Thrones actors sharing a quiet and cominal moment that would have been unthinkable in the Game of Thrones series. 13th Century Map of Britain http://www.bl.uk/onlinegallery/onlineex/mapsviews/mapgb/mattparismaplge.jpg Matthew Paris 13th Century Map The first chapter we feature today will focus on the actual land of Scotland. Key points of geography and castles that serve as strategic defense points for both Scotland and Game of Thrones. So significant are these factors they led to the real life Black Dinner and the fictional Red Wedding! Scotland And The Lands Beyond the Wall Map https://www.pen-and-sword.co.uk/assets/img/scotland-and-the-lands-beyond-the-wall.jpg Scotland And The Lands Beyond the Wall Map, credit Bob Marshall, historical illustrator. David compares the Lord of the Isles and the Isles men to the Ironborn. In a real battle David says he would pick the Islesmen. He makes some interesting observations. Lastly, we talk about the art or lack there of as seen in these two cultures. David reads a portion of his book that captures these sentiments perfectly. Please see the links below to find David's book and the map. Special Guest: David Weinczok.

Gudrun talks with the Scotish engineer Claire Harvey. After already having finished a Master's degree in Product design engineering at the University of Glasgow for the last two years Claire has been a student of the Energy Technologies (ENTECH) Master program. This is an international and interdisciplinary program under the label of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) inbetween a number of European technical universities. She spent her first year in Lisbon at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) and the second master year at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Gudrun had the role of her supervisor at KIT while she worked on her Master's thesis at the EUREF Campus in Berlin for the Startup inno2grid. Her study courses prepared her for very diverse work in the sector of renewable energy. Her decision to work with inno2grid in Berlin was based on the fact, that it would help to pave the way towards better solutions for planning micro grids and sustainable districts. Also, she wanted to see an actual micro grid at work. The office building of Schneider Electric, where the Startup inno2grid has its rooms is an experiment delivering data of energy production and consumption while being a usual office building. We will hear more about that in the episode with Carlos Mauricio Rojas La Rotta soon. Micro grids are small scale electrical grid systems where self-sufficient supply is achieved. Therefore, the integration of micro grid design within district planning processes should be developed efficiently. In the planning process of districts with decentralised energy systems, unique and customised design of micro grids is usually required to meet local technical, economical and environmental needs. From a technical standpoint, a detailed understanding of factors such as load use, generation potential and site constraints are needed to correctly and most efficiently design and implement the network. The presence of many different actors and stakeholders contribute to the complexity of the planning process, where varying levels of technical experience and disparate methods of working across teams is commonplace. Large quantities of digital information are required across the whole life-cycle of a planning project, not just to do with energetic planning but also for asset management and monitoring after a micro grid has been implemented. In the design of micro grids, large amounts of data must be gathered, there are initial optimization objectives to be met, and simulating control strategies of a district which are adapted to customer requirements is a critical step. Linking these processes - being able to assemble data as well as communicate the results and interactions of different "layers" of a project to stakeholders are challenges that arise as more cross-sector projects are carried out, with the growing interest in smart grid implementation. Claire's thesis explores tools to assist the planning process for micro grids on the district scale. Using geographical information system (GIS) software, results relating to the energetic planning of a district is linked to geo-referenced data. Layers related to energy planning are implemented - calculating useful parameters and connecting to a database where different stakeholders within a project can contribute. Resource potential, electrical/thermal demand and supply system dimensioning can be calculated, which is beneficial for clients and decision makers to visualize digital information related to a project. Within the open source program QGIS, spatial analysis and optimizations relating to the design of an energy system are performed. As the time dimension is a key part in the planning of the energy supply system of a micro grid, the data is linked to a Python simulation environment where dynamic analysis can be performed, and the results are fed back in to the QGIS project. Clare Mulley presents InGoodTaste- cooking up a storm every week on ZoneOneRadio, This week we’re taking a look at whisky. Like many other types of alcohol, Whisky began life as a medicine distilled by monks using fermented Grain. Aqua vitae or ‘water of life’ as it was originally known, has now become one of the most popular drinks in the world - surviving the dissolution of the monasteries, civil war and prohibition along the way. And now thanks to a rise in the popularity of cocktails and Mad Men, whisky drinking is attracting a new crowd of younger drinkers. We visited a whisky festival in Shoreditch, hosted by The Whisky Lounge, spoke to Diageo whiskey ambassador Collin Dunn and Pritesh Mody from Indian brand, Paul John whiskey. Lucy Boler is also in the InGoodTaste kitchen with her take on the classic Scotish dessert, Cranachan -- www.twitter.com/_InGoodTaste & www.twitter.com/z1radio www.facebook.com/zoneoneradio www.ZoneOneRadio.com
