Welcome to an Ope, A Ghost Book Club Mini Episode. In another foray into fiction, we read Darcy Coates's The Haunting of Rookward House (2020). Meet Guy, a man looking to escape his hometown after becoming the community pariah. His luck seems to have changed when he finds the deed to a forgotten house in his mother's attic. This is his chance: fix up the old mansion, sell it for a quick profit, and use the money to move away. Sounds easy, but the ghost of a deranged and jealous stalker has other plans, including keeping Guy all to herself. What a fun book! We highly recommend this one. We're sure you'll love it as much as we did.You can also use this link to text us your story :)If you have an experience, story, or anything else you'd like to share with us, you can email us at Opeaghost@gmail.com You can also follow us on Instagram, Join our Facebook group : Ope, A Ghost, or Follow us on YoutubeToodles!

Smack and Gabi kicked off their new year with their 2nd annual reading retreat, during which we escape town to curl up next to a cozy fire in a fancy lodge and read books all weekend.  Gabi burned through a lot of short romantic cuties and started a science fiction duology with incredible worldbuilding despite one major flaw.  Smack partook of a smattering of genres, including a mind-blowing historical fantasy novel that takes place in Medici Florence, an installment in an urban fantasy series with weather magic, and a somewhat outdated historical romance.  We polish things off by admiring the questionable dimensions of the lodge and a disturbingly large resident spider, prompting an honorable mention of a terrifying horror rec from Smack for the next spooky season. Books discussed this episode include: Secrets and Scrabble series by Josh Lanyon Cautionary Tails series by Lana Kole Cold the Night, Fast the Wolves (Edge Worlds #1) by Meg Long Lent by Jo Walton Weather Warden series by Rachel Caine The Spymaster's Lady (Spymasters #1) by Joanna Bourne From Below by Darcy Coates

In our last segment of horror fiction, (don't worry we will definitely revisit this topic), we barely touch the surface of the Adult Horror Genre. From Australian author Darcy Coates to Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Paul Tremblay, we share our favorite authors and why we love scary stories so much. While we don't really talk about the classics we definitely connect Shirley Jackson, Charlotte Perkin Gilman and others to modern horror writers. Stay with us as we dish on psychological thrillers, magical realism, bed bugs, ghost stories and bizarre/strange Japanese tales.

We are officially in SPOOKY SEASON so we thought what better than a good old fashioned ghost story to celebrate. Kelly Link's story “Two Houses” (which appeared in her collection titled Get in Trouble) is at once both a classic ghost story and one that is entirely unique. It combines elements of the dusty old English manor home and the idea of sharing ghost stories with friends around a fire with elements of space travel and science fiction. “Two Houses” is a story about a group of astronauts who have just awakened from a long deep sleep and are swapping ghost stories to pass the time. Their computer companion, Maureen, keeps things on the ship running, but she also can manipulate their surroundings--adding special effects to help bring the stories to life. As each astronaut takes their turn telling a tale, the atmosphere is getting creepier and more unsettling. By the end of Link's story, it is difficult to tell who the true ghosts are.  Recommended in this episode: Kelly Link's Get in Trouble and Craven Manor by Darcy Coates.  Please rate and review us, or better yet, tell a friend.  Our social media is @MonsterWrote on Twitter and Instagram. Chilly Gothic Horror for Spooky Nights! Today on Typical Books with Lydia we have Voices in the Snow by Darcy Coates. This was published in 2020 via Poisoned Pen and is the first part of the Black Winter series. Clare meets Dorran under the wildest of circumstance. Normally, when a story is at its heart a girl-meets-boy story I balk. I bail. I barf. But not here, as it is more of a girl-meets-house like many Coates novels are. I can relate to so much of this - driving in the most hellish of winter, being stranded in the cold, dealing with distance between family members be it physical or not. I've no real experience with the heart of this story, however, which is a true monstrosity, and it is played out very well. There are some minor plot questions and some minor gardening, time, and physics questions I had but these are small compared to the scope and plot as I enjoyed it all very much. I could guess that half of my questions would be answered had I re-read back a little instead of ploughing forward, but it was a compelling page-turner if there is one. Looking forward to the next book in this series and I've rarely ever wanted to read a series so that is saying quite a bit! Typical Books: Horror Fiction Booktube Unbound

Today on Typical Books with Lydia we have The Haunting of Gillespie House by Darcy Coates! Gillespie House is a thing of dreams to me. A modernized old mansion - all of the remnants of its former glory tucked up into the attic, a crumbling graveyard adjacent. Perfection! That it is short I liked, as this was expanded from a short story there was only so much story to tell. Elle starts out curious and travels through the house and time becoming more determined to find explanations in history despite many terrifying nights alone. This reminded me very much of Darling, starring Lauren Ashley Carter. It is far more modern, and far more bloody, but if you like this lone girl angle it is a good fit. The Others also comes to mind here. It is not the top of the pile when it comes to Darcy Coates, but a quick, quiet read all the same. Now it was not a very creepy read, but I enjoyed the atmosphere very much as it lent itself to my memories of an old farmhouse. There was something vaguely Lovecraftian about the grounds and the house itself as well. Not in the mythos sense, as Lovecraft is a different thing to me than most, but in the isolation and the tricks old landscapes play on the mind.
