Annie Kantor earned her B.F.A. in Textile Design from the Rhode Island School of Design. She honed her craft working in the contract textile industry designing woven upholstery and panel fabrics, serving as Head of Custom Studio at Maharam. While tackling the renovation of a period home in Oakland, Annie became frustrated by the lack of enticing designs in metal. She saw an opportunity to apply her expertise in repeating-pattern design and developed a line of custom metalwork that blossomed into Modern Metal. In this episode, Nada sits down with Annie to talk about her experience building a niche business for a high-end market. When she couldn't buy what she needed, she endeavored to create her own product. Annie pinpoints the decision that set her on a different course toward growing her revenue by scaling back on one particular effort. Her joy is evident when she talks about the craftsman she feels lucky to work with and the importance of building a healthy culture. For Annie, the road to a sustainable business was long but liberating. For doctors who spend years training to make their patients better, what happens when there is no cure? This is how Dr. Abraham Verghese came of age as a physician. At the height of the AIDS epidemic, he treated a rural population of dying young men, men his own age, who had no future and were often shunned by other doctors. Working with his AIDS patients, Dr. Verghese learned that treating the spirit can bring patients and their families an invaluable part of what they need when facing the incurable. As Dr. Verghese became renowned both as a doctor and a writer, he carried forward his rituals of personal focus on the patient and their families to keep humanity central to his medical practice. (02:28) Dr. Murthy and Dr. Verghese recount their first meeting (06:14) How did Abraham learn the difference between curing and healing? Think about the last time you felt let down by the health care system. You probably don't have to go back far. In wealthy countries around the world, medical systems that were once robust are now crumbling. Doctors and nurses, tasked with an ever expanding range of responsibilities, are busier than ever, which means they have less and less time for patients. In the United States, the average doctor's appointment lasts seven minutes. In South Korea, it's only two.Without sufficient time and attention, patients are suffering. There are 12 million significant misdiagnoses in the US every year, and 800,000 of those result in death or disability. (While the same kind of data isn't available in Canada, similar trends are almost certainly happening here as well).Eric Topol says medicine has become decidedly inhuman – and the consequences have been disastrous. Topol is a cardiologist and one of the most widely cited medical researchers in the world. In his latest book, Deep Medicine, he argues that the best way to make health care human again is to embrace the inhuman, in the form of artificial intelligence.Mentioned:“Deep Medicine: How Artificial Intelligence Can Make Healthcare Human Again” by Eric Topol“The frequency of diagnostic errors in outpatient care: estimations from three large observational studies involving US adult populations” by H. Best-selling author and Stanford University medical school professor Abraham Verghese has a new novel - a sweeping epic following three generations of a family in South West India across the 20th Century. The Covenant of Water will delight fans of his 2012 novel Cutting for Stone, which sold over 1 million copies and remained on the New York Times best-seller list for over two years. The story centres on a young Christian girl in Kerala, who is married to a 40 year old widower, and follows as she become matriarch of the family over decades in which India changes enormously. Abraham Verghese was born and grew up in Ethiopia - the son of expatriate Indian parents. He began medical school in Ethiopia, but his studies were interrupted by the civil war in 1974, and he continued in India before moving to the United States. He will appear live at the Auckland Writers Festival next month.
