Rob reflects on transition and locust trees down the driveway and then transitions into a discussion about leeks, St. David's Day, and how food has factored into his life transitions. Leeks are part of our diet, and our nutrition factors into our overall health and well-being. Our overall health and well-being is important for our physical health, which generally seems to come easier after financial health has been established. The seven areas of life balance are:Financial, Physical, Personal Development, Family, Spiritual, Social, and CareerListen to a story about how Rob transitions from the old life of climbing the corporate ladder and buying company stock, to closing out his bank accounts with the big banks to further his effort to do business with and support his local community, while getting his finances straight. Are you interested in learning more about community? Welcome to episode ninety-four of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! On the show this week we have our course preview for Swimrun NC. We're joined by Co-Race Director Herbert Krabel, Marcus Barton, and Bronwen and Greg Dierksen of the Boston Wet Sox to share everything you need to know about this epic ÖTILLÖ Merit Race in beautiful Hanging Rock State Park in North Carolina.THE STORYSwimrun NC has a really cool history. Check out our interview with co-race director Herbert Krabel to get the origin story of this cool race. Now in its 5th year, Swimrun NC offers Swimrunners a unique challenge. We asked Herbert to come on the show to share with us why athletes should have this race on their bucket list.Starting and finishing in Hanging Rock State Park, Swimrun NC is just 30ish miles north of Winston-Salem. There are several airport options to get to North Carolina in Charlotte, Greensboro, and Raleigh. Lodging near Hanging Rock is sparse unless you're ok with a campground. Otherwise look for lodging in Winston-Salem.THE RACEThe course is 16ish miles with 14 miles of running and 2 miles of swimming broken up into 11 runs and 9 swims with significant elevation thrown in. This isn't your beginner's Swimrun race but it does start and finish at a brewery so there's that.Annotated Leg By Leg BreakdownRun 1: Green Heron Ale House to Hanging Rock Lake (4.5 miles) First .4 miles are on a gravel road and that's where teams sort themselves out before hitting the single track Along the way climb through Window Falls which is one of the most picturesque parts of the courseIf you're racing, make your move before you get to the waterfall because it will bottleneck and slow you downSwim 1: Hanging Rock Lake (500m/547yd)This is one of the main aid station/checkpoints in the course that you pass several timesRun 2: Northern Lake trail (.2 miles)Swim 2: Cut across bay (25m/21yd)Run 3: Traverse waterfall (.2 miles)Swim 3: Hanging Rock Lake (500m/547yd)aid station/checkpointRun 4: Northern Lake trail (.2 miles)Swim 4: Cut across bay (25m/21yd)Run 5: Traverse waterfall and continue to Moore's Wall (2.1 miles)Moore's Wall has a 642 step stair climb but there's a lot of climbing before getting to the stepsDon't burn all your matches on this leg of the racesmall aid station/checkpoint (the aid is rationed at the top so make sure you take some extra hydration at the previous aid stationRun 6: Traverse of Moore's Wall and descent to lake (2.2 miles)Some tricky trails here so watch your footingConsider untethering here because of the technical descendSwim 5: Hanging Rock Lake (500m/547yd)aid station / checkpointRun 7: Northern lake trail (.2 miles)Swim 6: Cut across bay (25m/21yd)Run 8: Traverse waterfall (.2 miles)Swim 7: Hanging Rock Lake (500m/547yd) aid station/checkpointRun 9: Northern lake trail (.2 miles)Swim 8: Cut across bay (25m/21yd)Run 10: Traverse waterfall climb through Cascades Falls and descend to Dan River (5.7 miles)The Cascade Falls are about half a mile into this legThis is an out and back so you might see people running in the opposite direction (Up or down depended where you are on the out and back)Consider cabbing down if it's a warm dayThis is the last time to gain any ground on other teams if you're racingSwim 9: Rock walls to Green Heron Ale House (900m/984yd)Longest swim of the day The river can be pretty shallow at pointsConsider this as a voting strategyTry to swim the river the day before the race if you can to get a good sense of what to expect on race dayRun 11: Stairs to finish (50yd)THE STRATEGYWe asked The Deirksens for their strategy tips for approaching the unique challenges that Swimrun NC presents to teams. They outlined where to make moves if teams are racing, how to approach the toughest parts of the course, and where to make sure that you take on bonus hydration. As usual, they dropped some major knowledge bombs and we are grateful for their willingness to share their experience with us.THE TRAININGWe asked Marcus Barton (three-time race winner of Swimrun NC) to share his thoughts about how to approach training for the unique features of the race. He recommended training on hills both uphill and downhill and on technical trails as much as possible. He also recommends having confidence in the shoes that you will be using for the race which means practicing simulating race conditions if you can to gain confidence in your shoe choice.CLOSING THOUGHTSWe hope that this course preview gives everyone a good sense of what to expect on race day and how to prepare for the challenge that this ÖTILLÖ Merit race offers to Swimrun teams. These episodes are an iterative process so please let us know what you think about this evolving format. That's it for this week's show. Good morning, RVA! It’s 48 °F, and cloudy. You can expect pleasant temperatures in the mid 70s for most of the day, despite the lack of extreme sunshine.Water coolerAs of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports…something. VDH had some server maintenance done over the weekend, which meant their data dashboards went 404 for the past couple of days. They’re sort of up now, showing screenshots for most of the dashboard pages, but, like, you can’t scroll down on any of them and that makes finding “Richmond’ in an alphabetically sorted list a challenge. I’m missing data in my spreadsheet since Thursday, so expect numbers and chartsandgraphs to be weird for a while. This past Friday afternoon, Governor Northam “lifted Virginia’s universal indoor mask mandate to align with new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.” He recorded a short video of the announcement, too, if you’d rather hear his soft Eastern Shore drawl than read a press release this morning. The gist is the same as what we went over last week: If you’re fully vaccinated you can do whatever, whenever with a handful of exceptions (transit, health care facilities, and a few other spots). Additionally, businesses can still choose to require masks, so pay attention before you saunter into a place maskless. The Governor also announced that he’ll “ease all distancing and capacity restrictions on Friday, May 28th.” That’s two weeks earlier than planned and right before Memorial Day weekend—an, I’m sure, not unrelated fact. Until the 28th, though, we’re stuck in this limboland of mixed messaging around who can do what and for what reasons. Can I pack a big room full of maximally vaccinated people? I think the Governor’s restrictions prevent it, but the guidance says it’d be fine. Confusing. Regardless of how you feel about the sudden lurch in masking guidance, we’ll have a lot more clarity at the end of this month. I like how President Biden put it: “The rule is now simple: Get vaccinated or wear a mask until you do.”The school procurement and construction situation continues to evolve? devolve? Over the weekend the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s Chris Suarez reported that Mayor Stoney and three City Council members “are asking the School Board to reconsider its plans for the school division to manage the construction of a new George Wythe High School.” Via Councilmember Lynch’s newsletter, here are screenshots (first page, second page) of the letter sent by Mayor Stoney and Councilmembers Lynch, Robertson, and Newbille (that’s the Council President, Vice President, and George Wythe’s council rep) outlining how the new proposed process will work. It sounds like the City will hire a third party to help both sides with the procurement and construction process for “the entirety of the process.” Importantly, via Suarez’s piece, swing-vote School Board member Jonathan Young seems interested in the idea. School Board meets tonight, so maybe tune in to see if they choose to respond to this letter publicly.A Chris Suarez double header! He reports that the City has withdrawn a $75,000 contribution to the Enrichmond Foundationafter complaints about how they’ve involved (or failed to involve) volunteers and descendants—folks who have been working to preserve and restore those cemeteries for years and years. This is a long-simmering conflict and, from reading the article, does not sound nearly resolved. Also of note in a political intrigue sort of way, near the bottom of the article, Del. Delores McQuinn weighs in to disagree with Mayor Stoney’s decision. The Department of Public Works has a new survey up (until May 30th) for folks to weigh in on potential new bike lanes for the summer 2021 and spring 2022 paving seasons. You‘ ll be asked to weigh in on how bike lanes should look on six potential corridors: Brookland Parkway (not Brookland Park Boulevard), Colorado Avenue, Grove Avenue, Marshall Street, Walmsley Road, and Warwick Road. It’s so incredibly exciting to me that bike lanes are now just part of the regular paving process. Not too long ago, each of these pieces of proposed bike infrastructure would have involved a huge, drawn out, months long battle in public meetings and in the media. Progress! The City’s Planning Commission meets today and there’s a lot of interesting stuff on the agenda—including some cool pedestrian plaza stuff, a public stairs project (which you know I love), and the rezoning of the Southern States silos. Probably most interesting to readers of this newsletter is the presentation on the rezoning of the area around the Science Museum, Alison Street, and VCU & VUU Pulse stations. Last time this particular rezoning popped up on agendas there was much rending of garments and gnashing of teeth from nearby residents about all the typical stuff (height, density, shade, crime, sewers, etc, etc, etc). We’ll see how the City plans on moving this rezoning forward, now that we’re coming out of the pandemic and the Planning Department has new leadership.Important civic duty reminder: Today is the deadline to register to vote or update any of your voter information if you want to vote in the June gubernatorial primary. This morning’s longreadWhy The Vaccines are a Home Run Despite the Yankees’ OutbreakThis was the best analysis of the New York Yankees COVID-19 story that I read. It’s a challenge to remember that, with so many folks vaccinated, new cases are far, far less important than the number of hospitalizations and deaths. This piece made me want to rewrite the template for the top section of this email!A case of vaccine breakthrough is not the same thing as an unvaccinated or non-immune person catching COVID-19. Personally, if I had tested positive while unvaccinated, I’d be worried until it played out. Post-vaccination? For me, testing positive would be but a curiosity unworthy of my anxiety. There’s a reason that vaccine trials and real world data show so few severe cases, let alone hospitalizations or deaths. Post-vaccination, the virus would no no longer be able to surprise my immune system as a novel pathogen, and I’m not that worried whether it replicates just a bit in my nose before getting shut down.If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.Picture of the DayThis was the best lunch I’ve made in months.

Start at the Plant Northern Piedmont Natives Facebook page and tell them Lonnie Murray sent you! On today’s program:Lots of transportation news from the Thomas Jefferson Planning District CommissionCharlottesville City Council takes a first crack at next year’s fiscal budgetBrief update on the pandemicLet’s get a quick update on the pandemic. All metrics continue to trend downward, except for the number of fatalities. The Virginia Department of Health has been slowly catching up with death certificates from the post holiday surge, and 9,849 people are recorded as dying from COVID. And while the number of new cases each day has declined, they are still high. Today there were another 1,246 cases reported. Source: Virginia Department of HealthToday there is a long line once again at the former K-Mart where the Blue Ridge Health District is administering COVID vaccinations presumably the hundreds of people who got first doses on February 17. According to the VDH dashboard, 18 percent of Virginians have received at least one dose. Governor Ralph Northam acknowledged that milestone yesterday.“We’ve achieved the aggressive goal we set back in January,” Northam said. “Back then as you remember, just a few weeks ago our goal was to get to 25,000 shots a day and we accomplished that. We set a long-term goal that to get everyone vaccinated by this summer would be 50,000.” The seven-day average is currently 50,877 shots a dayThis week the Centers for Disease Control issued new guidance that allows people who have had all of their shots to be able to gather indoors with others who are also protected. (read the guidance) Still, the pandemic remains with us. On Monday, the Virginia Department of Health announced the South African variant has been found in their central region. “The B.1.351 variant, which first emerged in South Africa in late 2020, is associated with increased person-to-person transmission of COVID-19,” reads the press release. “At this time, there is no evidence that infections with this variant cause more severe disease.”I’ll have more from this press conference in a future program. For many of us, the pandemic has meant working from home. When this time ends, many of us may be looking for a different way to get to and from our workplace. On March 4, the person who runs a service that seeks to get people out of their cars told members of the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission about her work. Sara Pennington explained Rideshare.“We are a program that was established actually in 1980 at Jaunt through the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation to provide carpool and vanpool matching services and support,” Pennington said. “The program later moved to the TJPDC and then in 2009 we expanded our coverage to include the Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission so we kind of work in conjunction with our folks across the mountain.” (download FY22 proposed work program)RideShare also offers a guaranteed ride home program to give people who may have to get home at a different time the occasional option when there are sudden changes of plan. “That is a great comfort and always what we hear as the first deterrent that keeps folks from taking that alternative transportation,” Pennington said. RideShare also assists with helping companies with teleworking logistics, and is currently conducting a survey to gauge interest in coworking. Pennington said Rideshare has continued to operate during this last year. “Even though things this year have been weird with the pandemic there are still some folks who are going into work and who may still need those commute services, so none of that has stopped,” Pennington said. “But we have pivoted a lot of our direction and our resources and information sharing into the field of telework.” The TJPDC is currently working on several transportation studies, including a small area plan for Zion Crossroads and a look at the U.S. 29 corridor north of Airport Road in Albemarle County to U.S. 33 in Greene County. Jessica Hersh-Ballering is a transportation planner. “The overall purpose of this corridor study is to develop broad transportation recommendations that complement the existing land use designations in the study area,” Hersh-Ballering said. There are several new developments either under construction or in the planning stages in both Albemarle and Greene. The TJPDC is also supporting efforts to expand non-motorized infrastructure. Sandy Shackelford is the director of Planning and Transportation.“One of those is the expansion of the Virginia Capital Trail from Richmond through our region, through the Charlottesville area and even west into Staunton,” Shackelford said. Shackelford said the current task is to identify an alignment for such a trail. “It could be right now kind of looking at maybe some of these are on-street connections with a goal in the future to maybe have a set-aside shared-use path kind of facility, but that’s what they’re starting to work towards nowShackelford said her staff also supports the Regional Transit Partnership, which is at the beginning stages of creating a regional vision for public transportation. At the end of the TDJPC meeting, Commissioners had the chance to give updates on what’s happening in their community. City Councilor Michael Payne said new city City Manager Chip Boyles is settling in.“The major thing for us in Charlottesville especially over the next year is really rebuilding our organization and getting it to a better place,” Payne said. “Chip has entered on with a daunting task but perhaps not surprisingly to some of the people here, the work has already started. I’m optimistic that we’re moving into a much more stable place.” Payne also mentioned that the city is considering a one-cent sales tax to help cover the costs of reconfiguring the schools. That would take approval by voters in a referendum after passage of enabling legislation by the General Assembly. “And all that revenue would go strictly to school facilities,” Payne said. “What we’ve heard from our representatives is that it will be much more likely to happen and happen quicker if we have a groundswell of many localities saying this would be a useful power for us to have.” The Louisa County recently banned the practice of people asking others for money within medians. Bob Babyok is the board’s chair. “On Monday, 1 March, we also approved the panhandling prohibition so no more panhandling in Louisa,” Babyok said. Jesse Rutherford of the Nelson Board of Supervisors told the TJPDC that there’s a lot of activity happening in that county.“Here in Nelson we have a lot of opportunity coming as it relates to revitalization of Lovingston and hopefully we’re going to get some good efforts moving forward on some housing development,” Rutherford said. Nelson County currently has a population of about 15,000 according to the most recent estimates from the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia. Rutherford also raised an important issue worth considering as the pandemic recedes.“You know we haven’t had foreclosures in almost a year,” Rutherford said. “Since March there has been a prohibition on any foreclosure that is related to a loan that is insured by the federal government which sets a dangerous precedent potentially this summer when that foreclosure ban is raised.” Certainly an issue to know more about. The moratorium in Virginia is currently scheduled to end on June 30.Charlottesville City Council began their review of City Manager Chip Boyles’ recommended fiscal budget for fiscal year 2022. (review the budget)“We’ll provide a recommended balanced budget of $190,689,839,” Boyles said. “Included in this recommended budget are several identified Council priorities of affordable housing, racial equity, safety and security, workforce development, as well as investment in our employees.” The budget will be adopted in about five weeks after a series of work sessions, and after that, work will begin on updating the city’s strategic plan as a first concrete step towards creation of a budget for fiscal year 2023. Senior Budget Management Analyst Krisy Hammill detailed some of the Council priorities.“For racial equity, we are fully funding the deputy city manager of race, equity, diversity, and inclusion, the Home to Hope program, the food equity initiative, the Office of Human Rights, in addition to the city’s minority business activities,” Hammill said. A request to fully fund the Police Civilian Review Board at $350,000 has been granted. Other requests, however, were not included in the budget. There is no pay raise for employees, for instance. An open issue is whether to fulfil the school system’s full budget request, which does include a pay raise. Hammill offered various scenarios. Watch the video to learn more. Upcoming budget meetings! In this episode, Teri will share some of his favorite skills that we can all use at home particularly while we are self-quarantining at home. Enjoy! We are living in very challenging times right now with the COVID-19 pandemic, and we are all spending more time at home than ever before which has led to an increased use of voice assistants. Teri will talk about the five skills that his family uses on a regular basis. They include games and many other ways that they use Alexa for entertainment. And The Teri Fisher Top Five Skills Are:#1 - Question of the DayThis is super fun and the best trivia skill so far in Teri’s opinion. It works by asking the user a multiple point question and then keeps track of how the user is doing, gives them points, keeps track of the users streaks, and so much more. It's a very fun way of learning some random facts. When someone gets their question right, the skill gives them a bonus question. It even has badges that users earn. There are lots of gamification aspects to the skill that makes a user want to keep playing. It was made by MatchBox.ioIt’s invocation word is, “Alexa, start Question of the Day” or “Alexa, enable Question of the Day”#2 - Would You Rather? This is a game that gives the user a random question, for example, “Would you rather itch all the time or sneeze all the time?”Multiple people can play the game together at the same time.It has different categories, including General, Magic, and Hogwarts. It gives users the answers in terms of what most people say.#3 - Kid’s CourtIt was done by Pretzel Labs and its awesome especially for kids because Alexa acts as a judge, and she helps to give a judgement on different situations that may be happening at home. The user goes to judge Alexa and she rules on something that has happened, typically when kids are fighting or not getting along. They can each state their case, defend themselves, and even learn some law concepts in the process. The command for it is, “Alexa, open Kid’s Court”#4 - Song QuizThe command for it is, “Alexa, open Song Quiz”It’s a name-a-tune type of skill/game.A user can choose the number of players they want and if they’re playing alone, the skill can match them up to play with someone else in the world. One can choose music from different decades and it plays a short segment of a song so one can name the title and artist. If one gets both the title and artist right, they get bonus points. It’s very well produced and has lots of great sound effects built into it.#5 - AkinatorThe command for it is, “Alexa, open Akinator”It guesses who the user is thinking of and it does that by asking the user a series of questions. It amazingly correctly guesses who someone is thinking of most of the time.List of resources mentioned in this episode:Flash Briefing FormulaVoiceID.aiAlexainCanada.ca/ChatQuestion of the DayWould You Rather?Kid’s CourtSong QuizAkinatorTheVoiceDen.comOther useful resources:Voice in Canada: The Flash BriefingComplete List of Alexa CommandsAlexa-Enabled and Controlled Devices in CanadaTeri Fisher on TwitterAlexa in Canada on TwitterAlexa in Canada Facebook PageAlexa in Canada Community Group on FacebookAlexa in Canada on InstagramPlease leave a review on iTunesShopping on Amazon.ca See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Paul's statement is the statement each of us should aspire to be able to make one dayThis statement is a prelude to the lord, one day saying to us well done, good and faithful servant. We want to be able to boldly say I'm resisting steadfast in faith I'm running the race set before me by God. I am not wavering nor am I losing confidence in God's ability I'm growing strong in the faith. I'm strong in the Lord and the power of his might. Join with us today for a powerful word as Pastor Art takes us through the scriptures, ministering on the fight, the race and the faith and what it all means in the daily challenges we face as disciples. In this teaching we find that fear is the greatest challenge we face but we also learn how God has equipped us to overcome it Support the show (https://www.yourconnectionchurch.org/donate)
What are you doing in your spare time? We all have time on our hands. Stores and shops are closed, non-essential services are shut down and we are isolated from each other every day. There are a million things you could be doingDo they benefit you What about writing a story with your kidsPerhaps reading a bookTechnology opens so many doorsWe have so much information at our fingertipsWhy are we wasting time streaming movies and tv all-dayThis is not bettering or improving usEven small steps made each day will cause advancementEverything in moderationI could take some of my own advice many days and switch on the tv Taking a break from writing and prepping for the podcastNot working on another aspect of my business that day and playing a gameIt works both ways to watch a movie, enjoy some tv, practice a skill all in moderationA hard truth Now is the time to work on something that you have been putting offBegin to learn the process of starting a podcast Write a blogThere will be nobody to blame but yourself if you come out of this with no self-improvement or advancement in a dreamI didn’t have the time will no longer be a valid excuseNow is the time Grow a new skill. Practice it for an hour a day its really not that much.Study up on some processes that will make you more valuable and productive upon return to work. This will not recover overnight but I assure you just like everything that has come before it will recover.Remember that any improvement that you make in yourself now will pay dividends in some way later on down the line.Leaders stand up and are heardCreate a community with your co-workers to check up on them Your community needs you as your team did when at work. Your neighbors are your employees now serve them.People are amazingNow is an amazing time to grow family bonds and maybe even fall back in love with your spouse or partner. It is amazing what people can create with timeSome friends of mine were supposed to go on vacation recently but all the plans were canceled. They dressed up hung pictures around the house and toured the country and visited the places that they were to go.Perhaps a wine tour of the house. Post pictures and tour the countryside. Maybe a virtual spa day. Hot bath spa music from youtube the possibilities are endless. These little steps engage the imagination and we become creative in what we do. A skill many of us will have lost over the years as we age. Find a way to play.Fill your bucketAs some may know I am a firm believer in if you can dream it you can see it mindsetFocused belief and effort will find a way to manifest your dreamsThat is where the growth of skills come into play. Learning and growing puts energy in the buckets HomeworkShould only take about 10 minutesAnswer these questions and find a way to combine or enhance based on the answersWhat are your hobbies?Where would I like to be stronger when this is all over? How can I combine my hobbies with my desires? What do I need to advance myself?Who would I like to reconnect with? How can working on myself make me better in the future? Finally, why have I not started yet? Some very simple questions but they will help you to find a path towards your future and perhaps a better, healthier, more educated version of you! Try it out and I guarantee this little exercise will help you to grow.
