As mayor of Salt Lake County a decade ago, Ben McAdams was frustrated that there wasn't $500,000 in a $1.3 billion annual budget for a promising early childhood education program. Not one to permit defeat, he decided to map the value of the city's underutilized real estate. And that yielded an impressive number: All of a sudden the city had $45 billion on its balance sheet. “I found out there is actually money under our mattress,” Ben says. “It's real estate that is just forgotten.” Since then Ben has spent time in politics as mayor, senator and congressman. But now he's launched an incubator to help cities map their public assets, much like he did a decade ago, providing a path to solve issues that need money - like affordable housing and homelessness. Every city should listen in. If you'd like to join me in my quest to rethink real estate, there are two simple things you can do. For years, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has proclaimed its neutrality in partisan politics, a position reaffirmed in the faith's recently updated policy on the matter. But in a strongly worded letter to U.S. members, the governing First Presidency added a new wrinkle, denouncing strict party-line voting. “Merely voting a straight ticket or voting based on ‘tradition' without careful study of candidates and their positions on important issues,” the top leaders warned, “is a threat to democracy and inconsistent with revealed standards.” They reminded Latter-day Saints that “principles compatible with the gospel may be found in various political parties” and urged them to “vote for those who have demonstrated integrity, compassion and service to others, regardless of party affiliation.” For decades, Latter-day Saints have been among the most reliably Republican voting blocs with a number of members either overtly casting a straight GOP ticket or, in essence, doing so by simply backing the candidates with an “R” after their names. Could this blunt message from the First Presidency begin to change that voting dynamic? Will more members, especially in red states like Utah, start to back Democrats or office seekers from other parties? Would a more balanced Latter-day Saint electorate be helpful or harmful for the global church? On this week's show, a prominent Latter-day Saint Democrat, Ben McAdams, a former congressman and Salt Lake County mayor, discusses those questions and more.

I first met Ben last year, while running for Kaysville City Mayor. He was kind enough to share his candidate experience and lessons learned in public office. My connection to Ben is through a mutual friend (Paul Grant) and my sister-in-law with whom he grew up in West Bountiful. Ben has served as a County Mayor, State Senate Representative, and U.S. Congressman. As a city Mayor I was pleased to learn that Ben's passion is for local public service. Advocating for his neighbors, and friends within his community is where he finds the most satisfaction and joy. In this episode, one of the things we discuss is the SL County Mayor/Commission form of government versus the Davis County three-member Commission and the differences between the Counties. As a new Mayor, I appreciate the opportunity to listen and learn from as many people as possible. My goal is to show how Kaysville City works by sharing interviews with residents, business owners, neighboring cities, counties, government agencies, political organizations, the state legislature, and Utah's Congressional leaders.

Ben McAdams has had an unusual life in public service. Running as a moderate Democrat in a very conservative Republican state, he managed to be elected as a State Senator, then as Salt Lake County Mayor, and then as a Utah Congressman. Concern for the disadvantaged among us has been a driving force in his public life. Tasked as Mayor with helping to solve problems with Salt Lake City’s homeless population, he decided to spend a few days and nights living incognito with on them on the streets of the city. He needed to understand the issues first hand.In 2020’s politically polarized elections, McAdams was narrowly defeated. In this conversation with Terryl Givens, McAdams reflects on the disturbing power of tribal political loyalties. Does political identity now hold greater sway in our lives than our identity as disciples of Christ? Givens explores McAdams’ personal life as well as his public life, and they touch on what may be next for this unique public figure.

It's no secret that in the corridors of power there is a struggle for the soul of the Democratic Party. While Joe Biden won the presidency, there certainly wasn't a blue wave. Moreover, House Democrats lost seats and the fate of the Senate will be decided by two runoffs in Georgia in January. It's the progressives versus the moderate centrists. After COVID-19, America Will Never Be the Same (0:30)Guest: Chris Karpowitz, PhD, Professor of Political Science, Co-Director of the Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy, BYU; Grant Madsen, PhD, Professor of History, BYUThe COVID-19 pandemic clearly feels like a turning point for the United States. History books will probably refer to life before the 2020 coronavirus outbreak and after. I know I will. In what ways will our lives, our politics, our perceptions be permanently changed? Should Congress Meet Online? (19:28)Guest: Marci Harris, Former Congressional Staffer, Co-Founder and CEO of PopVoxLet's consider now how the pandemic might change the way Congress operates. At least five members of the House and Senate have contracted COVID-19 and many others have self-quarantined because of contact with an infected individual. Is it safe for members of Congress to be traveling back and forth between their districts and the Capitol every few weeks during a pandemic? Is there a way for Congress to do its business remotely during a crisis? So far House and Senate leadership have resisted the idea of going virtual. But there are others in Congress clamoring for it. Belarus May Be Next on Russia's “To Annex” List. (36:01)Guest: Matthew Schmidt, Associate Professor of National Security and Political Science at the University of New Haven. Belarus is a former Soviet bloc country landlocked and sandwiched between Russia and the European Union. Russian President Vladimir Putin could make it his – just like he annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. In some ways Belarus and Russia make a good fit. They've been closed economically and culturally for years. And Belarus' leader is often called “Europe's last dictator.” Belarus has continued to be even more of a Soviet-style country than Russia has.
