Join us for a new season of the People vs Inequality podcast on one of the biggest themes when it comes to changemaking and tackling inequalities: solidarity. Is solidarity in crisis or booming? What do we actually mean when we say solidarity? How can we unpack, critique, rebuild or reimagine solidarity in these times of great need? One step is creating the space to talk about it, to share our doubts, fears, frustrations, hopes, learning and more. This is what a group of Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity did over the past two years, resulting in a heartwarming process, a publication with community reflections and this podcast. In this episode you hear what we did, why it felt so valuable and what we found along the way. Amanda Segnini (climate justice activist & co-lead of the Solidarity Project), Ruby Hembrom (Indigenous Publisher, Phd-student & member of the project) and Barbara van Paassen (host & co-lead of the Solidarity project) talk about what brought them to this space, what solidarity means to them and what they learned in this time together – amidst so much violence and injustice in the world. Of course they also share their hope in moving forward practicing solidarity and simply being human. In need of some inspiration? In this conversation, Dr. Aaron T. Dossey discusses the surprising amount of land clearing around the globe for agriculture and its detrimental effects on the environment, including biodiversity loss and climate change. The solution, according to our guest, is insect protein as a sustainable alternative to traditional livestock because of the efficiency and nutritional benefits of growing insects for food. Dr. Dossey shares his journey into the field of entomophagy, detailing how he transitioned from a passion for insects to founding All Things Bugs LLC where he focuses on the commercialization of insect-based food products. In this conversation, Dr. Aaron T. Dossey discusses the challenges of the insect protein market, the processing techniques he developed, the hurdles faced in scaling production, and the importance of consumer acceptance. Dr. Dossey emphasizes the need for collaboration within the industry and shares his vision for a sustainable future where insect protein becomes a mainstream food source.Key points from this episode:Land clearing contributes significantly to climate change.Deforestation leads to loss of biodiversity and ecosystem degradation.Insect protein is more sustainable than traditional livestock.Insects require less water and resources for production.Insects provide complete proteins and essential nutrients.Funding opportunities can drive innovation in sustainable food sources.Product development in insect protein is complex but necessary.Scaling insect farming can address food security issues.Serendipity plays a role in entrepreneurial success.Innovative processing techniques can enhance the quality of insect protein.Market challenges include competition from lower-quality products.Consumer acceptance is crucial for scaling insect protein products.Collaboration within the industry can lead to more efficient practices.Raising awareness about the benefits of insect protein is essential.Funding and investment are critical for growth in this sector.Sustainable practices can make insect protein a viable alternative. The ingredient price must be competitive for widespread adoption.Consumer products can help normalize insect protein in diets.A better world includes more wild spaces and equitable economic systems. Sound Bites“It appears that land clearing potentially is a bigger problem than climate change.""We're losing species faster than we can track.""Insects are really a no-brainer when you really look at their benefits, their efficiency, all the positive attributes and lack of negative – other than perception, there really aren't a lot of negative attributes.""Insects use very little water compared to livestock. For example I see usually around 1% water use compared to beef, or something in that range.”"Insects are complete proteins, unlike many plants.""We need to scale up sustainable technologies quickly.""We need to reduce beef and dairy consumption.""We are the R&D labs for major food manufacturers." LinksDr Aaron T Dossey on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/aarontdossey/All Things Bugs - https://allthingsbugs.com/All Things Bugs on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/allthingsbugs/All Things Bugs on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/AllthingsbugsAll Things Bugs on X - https://x.com/AllThingsBugsAll Things Bugs on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/AllThingsBugsAll Things Bugs on TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@allthingsbugsAll Things Bugs: Leader in Insects as a Sustainable Bioresource - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgGWStYQC_YBugs In Space: Biomimicry Solution for Sustainable Food on the Moon, Mars and Earth - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vp0S-Gfk_tAInsects as Sustainable Food Ingredients (Book) - https://shop.elsevier.com/books/insects-as-sustainable-food-ingredients/dossey/978-0-12-802856-8Invertebrate Studies Institute - https://isibugs.org/Invertebrate Studies Institute on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/isibugs/Invertebrate Studies Institute on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/InvertebrateStudiesInstitute/Invertebrate Studies Institute on X - https://x.com/ISIBugsInvertebrate Studies Institute Research Video - https://vimeo.com/user48219928Griopro (Ingredient) - https://griopro.com/Some videos:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgGWStYQC_Yhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vp0S-Gfk_tAhttps://vimeo.com/user48219928…Brands for a Better World Episode Archive - http://brandsforabetterworld.com/Brands for a Better World on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/brand-for-a-better-world/Modern Species - https://modernspecies.com/Modern Species on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/modern-species/Gage Mitchell on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/gagemitchell/…Print Magazine Design Podcasts - https://www.printmag.com/categories/printcast/…Heritage Radio Network - https://heritageradionetwork.org/Heritage Radio Network on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/heritage-radio-network/posts/Heritage Radio Network on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/HeritageRadioNetworkHeritage Radio Network on X - https://x.com/Heritage_RadioHeritage Radio Network on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/heritage_radio/Heritage Radio Network on Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/@heritage_radio

Today, we are learning from Della Z Duncan. Della guides us upstream to the root causes of the challenges of our time to empower us to realize and re-member who we are and how we can contribute. As a Renegade Economist, plants in her regenerative livelihood garden include hosting the Upstream Podcast challenging mainstream economic thinking through documentaries and conversations, supporting individuals as a Right Livelihood Coach, co-directing the California Doughnut Economics Coalition which just released a Doughnut Snapshot of the state of California, helping transition businesses and organizations to post-capitalism, and teaching and facilitating courses and retreats on Buddhist Economics, the Work that Reconnects, and Regenerative Economics. Della is also the Course Development Manager of Fritjof Capra's Capra Course on the Systems View of Life, a Senior Fellow of Social and Economic Equity at the London School of Economics, a Gross National Happiness Master Trainer, and a Senior Lecturer of Renegade Economics and Regenerative Livelihoods at the California Institute of Integral Studies, Santa Cruz Permaculture, Vital Cycles Permaculture, and Gaia Education. Let's get started... In this conversation with Della Duncan, I learned: 00:00 Intro 02:55 The current plants in her regenerative livelihood garden of Della. - One who supports re-membering. 04:30 Our parenting and caretaking can be part of the offerings of our time. 06:05 Renegate economist is to challenge and unlearn the paradigms and values that underpin mainstream economic thinking. 08:20 What are your indicators for success, what are your metrics? 09:20 What is truly important to you and to us? 10:50 We have high levels of inequality and it is growing. Many people don't have the ability to be happy, healthy, and well. 13:25 A beautiful vision for a post-profit world. 14:50 What do you want your entrepreneurship to serve, what cause or issue? 15:15 Entrepreneurship can be a force for good. 15:45 You find your enoughness and after that, where do you want your profit to go? 20:45 Kicked off the mindfulness cushion into a path of engaged activism. 21:35 Stumbling onto Buddhist economics, the work of E.F. Schumacher, and Schumacher College. 25:50 Challenging the main mainstream economic thinking with initiatives like doughnut economics. 27:35 Bringing Doughnut Economics to live in California. 32:40 Instead of seeking balance, Della seeks balancing. 33:00 We are tentative about what we measure; what are my metrics of success? 34:40 Looking at some of your work as a hobby as a helpful reframe for balancing life. 36:00 Being led by inquiry is important for the podcast. 39:05 This is how they use the money from their Patreaons. 40:10 Learnings from the conversations about post-capitalism parenting. 45:05 A more equal world is better for everyone. 45:45 We get to a more equal world by paying people more equally. 47:20 Two great questions from the right livelihood coaching sessions: 1. What is the world's deepest hunger as it shows up for you? (What breaks your heart?) 2. How do we pair that with your deepest gladness? (What brings you joy? Sense of thriving?) 51:24 The practice of tithing - with the mindset of enoughness, what can you give away what you don't need? 52:20 Christianity has been supportive of capitalism, colonization, and harm to people on the planet. We can also find places where Christianity had been supportive of post-capitalist realities. 54:15 Spiritual traditions are unhelpful when they posit individual salvation and cosmic duality, and they are helpful when they posit collective liberation and cosmic unity. 58:00 What are your metrics? How are you measuring your life? The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet. — Frederick Buechner More about Della Duncan:

Franco, COO and President of DigitalNest.org. Dr. Antonia O. Franco's career spans nearly thirty years of executive and management experience in the nonprofit, philanthropic and government sectors advancing access, equity and a voice to marginalized communities. She has worked extensively on leading organizational change, creating strategic partnerships and community building, and scaling the work of programs, initiatives and organizations. She oversees the programmatic and operational initiatives that support the scaling efforts spanning the five rural communities of Watsonville, Salinas, Gilroy, Modesto and Stockton.  Dr. Antonia and I  discuss her inspiring journey into higher education, through perseverance and by highlighting the pivotal role her family, community support, and how she saw that representation matters. If you can see it, you can be it.  Growing up in an agricultural community in Arizona, Dr. Franco's story is a testament to the power of nurturing curiosity and providing opportunities for young people to envision and achieve their aspirations. Dr. Franco and I discuss the current lack of diversity in tech and educational leadership and stress the importance of motivating more of our Latine community to pursue careers in education, technology and the  STEM industries. By showcasing various career paths, organizations like Digital Nest are guiding young people toward building economic equity by fulfilling impactful careers by utilizing tech and helping them into their first career within tech organizations.  We both emphasize how important it is to pay it forward to our future generations by the change we are setting in motion through organizations, such as Digital Nest and by using this podcast platform to lift our voices. About one-fifth of women who graduated from college between 1900 and 1920 were in the labor force in their mid to late twenties. In contrast, more than four-fifths of women graduating from college between 1980 and 2000 worked outside the home in their mid to late twenties. A flip side of this is the proportion of women married by age 30; 50% for those who graduated college between 1900 and 1920 and about 25% for those graduating between 1980 and 2000.  These statistics reflect choices that women have made and continue to make about balancing a career with raising children, and the choices that men have made and continue to make as well. On this episode of EconoFact Chats, Michael Klein speaks with Claudia Goldin of Harvard University about her recent book, Career and Family: Women's Century-Long Journey toward Equity, highlighting a wealth of statistics and examining cultural shifts shaping these choices. This event was the launch of the paper 'A New Diaspora of Saudi Exiles: Challenging Repression from Abroad' by Professor Madawi Al-Rasheed published under the LSE Middle East Centre Paper Series. Since the rise of Saudi Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman in 2017, a new wave of exodus began, that has pushed feminists, young students, secularists, Islamists and others to flee the country in search of safe havens in the US, Europe, Canada and Australia. Based on ethnographic research, this paper traces the diversity of the young cohort of exiles who are currently seeking to counter domestic repression from abroad. Although Saudi Arabia has generated waves of exiles throughout its modern history, Al-Rasheed argues this recent diaspora is different in its diversity, demographic profile and aspirations. Madawi Al-Rasheed is Visiting Professor at the LSE Middle East Centre and a Fellow of the British Academy. Since joining the Centre, she has been conducting research on mutations among Saudi Islamists after the 2011 Arab uprisings. This research focuses on the new reinterpretations of Islamic texts prevalent among a small minority of Saudi reformers and the activism in the pursuit of democratic governance and civil society. Her latest books are 'Salman's Legacy: The Dilemmas of a New Era' (London: Hurst/OUP, 2018) and 'The Son King: Reform and Repression in Saudi Arabia' (London: Hurst/OUP, 2020). Armine Ishkanian is Professor of Social Policy and the Executive Director of the Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity programme at the International Inequalities Institute, LSE. Armine's research examines the relationship between civil society, democracy, development, and social transformation. She has examined how civil society organisations and social movements engage in policy processes and transformative politics in a number of countries including Armenia, Egypt, Greece, Russia, Turkey, and the UK.

Disagreements over the necessity or wisdom of policies to advance economic equity have riven the country and Washington in recent years. Is equity a goal to be pursued by a vigorous policy agenda? Would doing so prove to be counterproductive? Debating this issue will be leading student debaters from the Washington Urban Debate League in Washington, DC, with an expert panel of judges from across the ideological spectrum offering feedback and insight.A project of the Cato Institute, Sphere Education Initiatives works with grades 5–12 educators and administrators to provide them with the knowledge, experience, professional development, and viewpoint‐diverse resources to bring difficult conversations on the most pressing issues to the classroom and equip our country's students to engage in civil discourse. The Washington Urban Debate League uses debate to make transformative educational opportunities available for students in the DC area. Peer‐reviewed research shows that competitive debate is one of the best things a student can do with their out‐of‐school time, building lifelong and career‐oriented skills that cannot be automated or outsourced. Debaters show more substantial academic and social‐emotional growth and graduate and attend college at a higher rate than their non‐debater peers. The National Association for Urban Debate Leagues is a national leader in the debate movement, preparing the next generation to lead and succeed. Urban agriculture has a long and diverse history throughout the world. Its health, social, and economic benefits for communities have been the subject of many studies and advocacy efforts seeking recognition of urban food production as a legitimate use of city space and as “real” agriculture. In the US, the past decade has seen policy support for urban food production expand at multiple scales of governance. At the same time, new forms of high-tech, commercial urban agriculture have emerged, often funded through private investment and venture capital. Understanding the implications of these shifts for racial and economic inequity, within the broader US context of social inequality, is important in designing and implementing more socially just urban agriculture policies. In this talk, Kristin Reynolds discusses recent evolutions in urban agriculture practices and policy, their implications for racial and economic equity, and her current work to inform more socially just urban agriculture policy through her Food and Social Justice Action Research Lab. In this episode of Work in Progress, Joanna Smith-Ramani, co-executive director of the The Aspen Institute Financial Security Program (FSP), and I discuss how we, as a society, can improve financial security and democratize access to wealth to improve economic equity across our country. Every day, more than 50 million Americans live in or near financial crisis. Financial instability has gone mainstream, threatening our economy and our democracy. Last month at the Aspen Ideas Festival, I sat down with Smith-Ramani to discuss the FSP's new report, The New Wealth Agenda: A Blueprint for Building a Future of Inclusive Wealth. The report offers "a goal that is equal parts ambitious and achievable: by 2050, we must increase by ten-fold the wealth of households of color and those in the bottom half of the wealth distribution in the United States." The New Wealth Agenda identifies eight objectives that the organization believes are the most effective path forward for reaching that goal.  One objective we discuss is supporting young adults on their pathway to a lifelong career, one that could change their financial future forever. Here is some of what Smith-Ramani tells me. “In our country, when you are 18-to-25, your job should be to invest in yourself. And that means either traditional college, or it could be a training program, apprenticeship, or vocational school. There are lots of options, right? But the reality is, as a country, we have to say whichever option is yours, we are gonna support you doing that. "We're gonna sort of bubble wrap you and insulate you so you have what you need. That could be everything from ensuring that our public benefit system provides the basic needs for students who are studying. It also means making sure there are housing subsidies so they can live stably and know they have a home to go to, to study in and then get to class the next day. The biggest part is that they need non-labor income." Also in the conversation, we talk about the other seven objectives, preconditions for building sustainable wealth, proven wealth-building strategies in need of greater scale and refinement, and emerging innovations. Our conversation was originally recorded for the Aspen Ignites series. This week we chat with both Steve Zoegall, the Global Industry Lead for Cities, Transportation, and Infrastructure at Accenture, and Candy Johnson, the President and CEO of the Urban League of Greater Chattanooga. We talk about two very different but equally important issues: the digital underpinnings of reaching net zero and the role of public private partnership, and how to build inclusive economies where people of color drive and achieve prosperity. Candy Johnson is a native of Clarksville, Tennessee where she was the youngest member ever elected to public office for the Clarksville City Council, at 25 years old. Johnson's professional experience includes more than a decade as a leader in nonprofit, education, political and civic related roles. Steve Zoegall studied at Harvard and Columbia University. Prior to joining Accenture he worked in biotech marketing, taught at the university level, and worked as a strategy consultant. For more on Accenture's work with the World Economic Forum: https://www.accenture.com/us-en/insights/strategy/wef-industries#block-urban-transformationFor more on the Urban League:https://www.ulchatt.net/

Claudia is the Henry Lee Professor of Economics at Harvard University. She is a former President of the American Economic Association, and co-directs the National Bureau of Economic Research's Gender in the Economy Study Group.

The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Show (10/04/22) 3:00pm- Worried about the struggling economy? Don't be! The Washington Post's business section moronically explains why a recession is a good thing for Americans, with reasons that include “housing prices may finally come down to reasonable levels” and “student loan forgiveness is coming.”  3:20pm- Building upon the Washington Post's “7 Ways a Recession Could Be Good for You Financially”, Rich comes up with his own list of benefits to Biden's economy—including that the skyrocketing prices of food will help him eat less and lose some weight.  3:40pm- Andrew C. McCarthy—Senior Fellow at National Review Institute & author of “Ball of Collusion: The Plot to Rig an Election and Destroy a Presidency”—joins the show to discuss his latest editorial, “Larry Krasner's Lies.” McCarthy writes of Philadelphia, “the City of Brotherly Love passed the 400-murder mark for 2022 last week, with a quarter of the year left to go. The 2021 record outpaced New York City by a wide margin (the Big Apple saw 485 murders—a bad year by recent standards), even though New York City's population is more than five times that of Philadelphia.” During a recent interview, District Attorney Larry Krasner deflected accusations that his prosecutorial strategies are ineffective by stating that Pennsylvania, overall, has a high crime rate—but, as McCarthy points out, PA's violent crime problem is “way higher than it should be largely because of Krasner's city, even though Philadelphia accounts for only a little over a tenth of the state's overall population.”   4:05pm- On Thursday, Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation that would make California a “sanctuary state” for child gender health services and reassignment surgeries. According to Daily Wire, “the new law restricts California officials and health providers from cooperating with out-of-state attempts to stop a child from getting gender health services, which could include puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, or gender surgery.” In response to criticisms, Governor Newsom stated, “in California we believe in equality and acceptance.”  4:15pm- According to a report from the Manhattan Institute's Christopher Rufo, the American Medical Association is imploring U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland and the Department of Justice to prosecute commentators on social media who are critical of doctors who perform gender affirmation procedures on children and teens. The AMA claims doctors, and hospitals, have been subjected to numerous threats. 4:35pm- On Friday, President Joe Biden thanked Aviation Survival Technician Second Class Zach Loesch—a hero who saved lives during the aftermath of Hurricane Ian. However, due to the Coast Guard's vaccination mandate, Loesch, who is unvaccinated, is expected to be discharged from service within the next 60 days.  4:40pm- During Tuesday's press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre explained that the Biden Administration had “no comment” on the potential discharge of Aviation Survival Technician Second Class Zach Loesch due to his unvaccinated status—despite his heroics during Hurricane Ian.  4:45pm- While speaking at the 2022 Freedman Bank Forum on Economic Equity, Secretary Janet Yellen explained that the Biden Administration and U.S. Treasury are adopting economic policies that promote “racial equity.”  5:05pm- Dr. Mehmet Oz—Republican candidate for United States Senate—joins the show to discuss his race against progressive John Fetterman. Despite being behind by 10-points in June, Dr. Oz is now polling within the margin of error. During the interview, Dr. Oz responded to reports that Fetterman vandalized a local business while serving as mayor of Braddock. On Monday, Fetterman used social media to promote a horrific claim that Oz engaged in incidents of animal abuse while conducting research at Columbia University—Dr. Oz flatly refuted the claim, saying it's simply not true. 5:25pm- While appearing on ABC, former CIA Director Gen. David H. Petraeus was asked about the possibility of Russia using nonstrategic or tactical nuclear weapons in its ongoing war with Ukraine. Petraeus suggested that in response, the United States would likely use non-nuclear weapons to sink Russia's Black Sea fleet. 5:40pm- A man has taken advantage of New York's gun buyback program—using his $200 3D printer to manufacture the “lower receivers and frames” of plastic firearms. He was able to trade-in over 100 “guns”, netting $21,000 in gift cards. 5:50pm- While speaking with Bloomberg reporter Akshat Rathi on the Zero podcast, Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates said that it was unrealistic for climate activists to expect people to stop eating meat or to forfeit living in nice homes in order to combat the “climate crisis.” 6:05pm- Pennsylvania State Representative Amen Brown joins the show to talk about the unmitigated violence Philadelphia is experiencing. Rep. Brown explains how he has made a habit of going to crime scenes in order to provide comfort to the loved ones of those who have been victimized. During the interview, Rep. Brown breaks-down the recent Pennsylvania House hearings seeking evidence to impeach Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner—explaining that he believes Krasner and Mayor Jim Kenney both need to go. He also talks about “Philly Scoreboard” where gangs take credit for crimes committed throughout Philadelphia. Why isn't more being done by city officials to stop this?  6:45pm- According to an NBC/Telemundo poll, Democrats hold a 21-point lead with Latino voters—but that number is down from 42-points in 2012. How could this major shift impact the 2022 midterm elections?
