Depsite our goal to create communities where everyone helps, sometimes offers of help can create conflict in the classrrom. Ross shares a recent example during block clean up. Mike has seen "help" with puzzle assembly lead to similar conflicts. Thinking of ways that we do (and don't) like to receive help in our own work can give some insights. Joey wonders if the word "help" leaves things too open ended sometimes. As we support children in building their skills to do hard things, we need to also pay attention to why they might not want help. We sure hope that everyone can learn to ask for and accept help when they need it.

Rabbi Yaakov Shapiro, a pulpit rabbi, author of The Empty Wagon: Zionism's Journey From Identity Crisis to Identity Theft (2020), and host of the Committing High Reason podcast, discusses Zionism and its relationship to current conflicts the state of Israel. Covering the birth of Zionism that responded to European's stereotype of the “the Jew as bad,” “disgusting” and “retrogade,” Zionism offered up “the opposite of a Jew…in personality and character” where this stereotype, attempting to remodel Jewish identity that was based, created quite paradoxically, an anti-Semitic Jewish identity. Noting the anti-Jewish notes of Zionism, Shapiro highlights how religious Jews—orthodox and non-orthodox Jews alike—early on disassociated entirely from Zionists. Shapiro elaborates Theodor Herzl's work in fomenting an ideology that politicised Jewish identity, while observing how Zionism was never a movement of self-determination of the Jewish people, but was a movement that critically attempted to nationalise the religion. Noting how Herzl effectively “gaslit the Jews” by politicising the “Holy Land” while conflating it with Judaism, Shapiro analyses how Zionism has created the current political crisis in Gaza today where horrors are effected in the name of an ideology that has absolutely nothing to do with Judaism whatsoever. Depsite the media and political machinery that attempts to push the fiction of Zionism in buttressing the creation of Israel as “the Jewish state” while conterminously demanding that all Jews be loyal to Israel, lest they be guilty of anti-Semitism as well, Shapiro criticises how Zionism has been curated in a way that falsely assumes that there is only one way to be Jewish or worse, that if you are against Zionism, you are necessarily an anti-Semite. Shapiro vituperates this position and inverts the polemic: “Instead of [asking] when does anti-Zionism cross the line into anti-Semitism, we need to start asking the queiston the other way: When does Zionism cross the line into anti-Semitism?” Get full access to Savage Minds at savageminds.substack.com/subscribe

Let's start with this: No one should be in jail for weed. It's 420 and it's only appropriate for Evelyn LaChapelle to be a guest on the podcast. Evelyn is a mom, cannabis advocate and business owner. She is also very open about her experiences within the legal justice system after being sentenced to 87 months in federal prison for depositing cannabis funds into a bank account. The California mom spent five years in the North Carolina prison across the country from her friends, family and her young daughter. She details the nuances of her release from prison that many people may be unaware of, like how she entered a drug rehab program in exchange for time off her sentence. It was in this program that she had to introduce herself as someone who was "addicted" to marijuana. While we all celebrate the plant each year on April 20, it's also important to take a moment to remember that this same plant was weaponzied against Black and brown people for years and the effects can still be felt today. Evelyn shares how she had to watch cannabis go legal in her home state and numerous other states across the country while she served time for it. We also get into how she and her daughter handled her incarceration -- which she admits was tough for them both, including her own mother who would fly across the county just so she could visit with her for 30 minutes. Depsite it all, Evelyn was able to turn her anger, frustration and passion into her business venture, 87 months and The Weed Lady. Follow Evelyn on Instagram @87months

Today is a special day, because it is Jackie Robinson Day. Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball on April 15th, 1947. Depsite much oppression and hardship, through his example and willingness to press on, he paved the way for black atheletes to compete side by side with white men, as it always should have been. To honor him, today all players in the MLB wear his number 42. What was once divided is now brought together, as barriers were broken. Well...Jesus Christ has also broken down walls of hostility. Through his willingness to suffer, he brought Jews & Gentiles together and made them one in the kingdom of God. Where there once was hostility now is only unity and peace because of the cross of Christ.
