The New York Yankees will be looking for a new hitting coach this offseason. Sean Casey announced on Wednesday that he wouldn't return to the team in 2024, citing family reasons. Stacey and Steve react to the news and wonder what this means for the Yankees going forward. Also, does this mean there will be a change in philosophy throughout the Yankees' Minor League system, which still follows former hitting coach Dillon Lawson's practices? Then, Locked On Yankees' viewers were asked who they will be rooting for in the World Series. Stacey and Steve discuss being surprised at the results but not necessarily about the choice. And they preview the World Series. They scrutinize Texas's strengths and weaknesses and Arizona's strengths and weaknesses and make bold predictions about who will win the series, in how many games, and who will win the MVP. The Yankees offensive woes have gotten so bad that Cashman fired his first coach mid-season. Aaron Judge's absence has destroyed the team because Brian Cashman doesn't know what he's doing. It's very bleak right now. We also discuss the state of the rotation with Rodon's return, Sevy's demise, and Domingo/Clarke resurgence. Hour 1: Boomer & Gio are back this morning and Boomer is disappointed the Mets dropped two straight heading into the All Star break. The Yankees also blew their game against the Cubs yesterday as Aaron Boone took Domingo German after the game after giving up 1 hit in 6 innings. The Yankees did fire their hitting coach, the first in-season firing of a coach or manager in Brian Cashman's Yankees career. Boomer explains that a hitting coach can change the approach of the players. Gio doesn't see the point of a hitting coach. As we sit here at the all Star break, we have two mediocre baseball teams. Boomer said that Aaron Judge will make a go of it after the All Star break. Boomer has talked to a number of people about this including the ‘head toe guy'. C-Lo is in for Jerry and is here for his first update but first Boomer talks more about Judge's toe injury. Boomer said it probably feels like when people have gout. Boomer said if he comes back this season he is not going to be the same player. C-Lo starts with sounds from the Mets loss to the Padres thanks to Max Scherzer giving up 2 HRs to Manny Machado. Scherzer said he has to pitch better. Tommy Pham left yesterday's game with groin soreness. Boomer doesn't think the Mets will be sellers and will do everything they can to grab a Wild Card. Gleyber Torres booted a potential double play ball. Brian Cashman talked about firing the hitting coach, Dillon Lawson. In the final segment of the hour, someone jumped off the ferry and Captain Dave explains there are propellers under there and you might end up being bait. Dave said there are fight clubs with Gen Z'ers.

Boomer was listening to Joe Benigno who wanted some more Mets numbers retired. Boomer likes the Ring of Honor better than retiring numbers. A caller said brown Listerine is effective against horse flies on the beach. Big Zoo is committed to do the bike tour next year. C-Mac started his new overnight show last night. C-Lo returns for an update and starts with Manny Machado hitting 2 HRs off Max Scherzer as the Padres beat the Mets. The Yankees lost to the Cubs as Gleyber Torres booted a double play ball. The Yankees fired hitting coach Dillon Lawson. Cubs Manager David Ross was tossed and microphones caught him yelling at the ump. Elly De La Cruz of the Reds stole second, third and home all in a row. In the final segment of the hour, Boomer & Gio played golf separately and together during the break. A caller thinks he saw Gio at the Lakehouse last week. He did. Hour 3: RB Dalvin Cook remains unsigned and keeps getting linked to the Jets. Boomer thinks Dalvin Cook wants to play in Miami and they are using the Jets to get more money from the Dolphins. The Jets will not get into a bidding war for Cook. He has a $7 million offer from the Vikings but he doesn't seem to want to play there. It does not look like the Jets are going to get him. Jets are simply being leveraged here. Gio met a woman over the weekend who said her husband canceled their cruise for January because he assumes the Jets will be in the playoffs. A caller wants to know if Boomer went to Michael Rubin's ‘White Party'. He was not. C-Lo returns for an update but first Gio said Highland Falls, NY is experiencing crazy flooding from storms. The Mets lost to the Padres as Joe Musgrove shut them down. Max Scherzer gave up 5 more runs as Manny Machado hit 2 HRs off him. Domingo German was pulled after giving up only 1 hit in 6 innings and the bullpen gave it away. Gio doesn't want C-Lo playing Aaron Boone. Both Peter Schwartz and Shaun Morash don't know how to pronounce meringue. And Rob Manfred had some issues announcing a draft pick. In the final segment of the hour, Gio went to see Luke Bryan and got to hangout with him backstage. Gio was going through his snacks and telling him which ones had bad ingredients. Dua Lipa is Gio's ‘hall pass' and Morgan Wallen is his wife Gina's ‘hall pass'. Gio thinks he has a better shot at Dua Lipa than his wife has at Morgan Wallen. Hour 4: The NBA announced details about the NBA Cup, an in season tournament beginning November 3rd. Are fans supposed to get excited if their team wins the cup? C-Lo returns for an update and starts with Manny Machodo hitting 2 HRs off Max Scherzer. Boomer said that the game is 24 hours old and can't understand why C-Lo is still reporting on it. Boomer said the Yankees don't want to tell the fans the full truth about Aaron Judge's toe. We talked about Damian Lillard demanding a trade and it's pissing Boomer off. In the final segment of the show, Larry Nassar, the sleazeball that was abusing gymnasts, has just been stabbed multiple times in prison. He lived through it. Boomer talked about the movie, ‘Sound of Freedom' about human trafficking.
Hour 2: Corey Dillon went off on the Bengals for the way they are voting for the Ring of Honor. Boomer was listening to Joe Benigno who wanted some more Mets numbers retired. John and Justin discuss the struggles of the recent Yankees homestand, the dismissal of Dillon Lawson, Shohei Ohtani, Ellly De La Cruz, and more.
Whether you think the first half of the baseball season is the 81-game mark or the All-Star break, the first half of the baseball season is officially in the books. And was it ever so ... dull and disappointing for the Yankees? Scattered among the lifeless and uncompetitive at-bats of the first half were some moments of fun and competence, but overall this first half was just not a memorable one for the Bombers. The struggles of the offense were so profound, it led to general manager Brian Cashman making his first-ever midseason coaching change by relieving hitting coach Dillon Lawson of his duties (and the title today riffing on the old #NextManUp mantra). On today's podcast, Andrew and Kunj discuss how it's never good to see someone lose their job, a change was needed just to see if a different mindset can get some of these guys going. While Lawson was the main topic, they also discussed Carlos Rodón making his much-awaited Yankee debut, the MLB Draft officially being underway and the Yankees making their first-round pick in George Lombard Jr., and then provide the weekly injury updates. After that, they wrap of the podcast with our usual check-in of Baseball Reference's WAR leaderboard, and then hand out the Yankees and Manfreds of the Week. Best of luck to Lawson in his future, and even better luck wished to Sean Casey, who will be tasked with making DJ LeMahieu look like a machine again. (As a programming note, Casey's hire was revealed followed the podcast recording.) Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Yankees needed to do something but firing their hitting coach won't be enough to save their ugly offense. Their problems run much deeper. Hour 1.
Brian Cashman has done something for the first time in his two-plus decades as the New York Yankees General Manager: make an in-season coaching change. First things first, Yankees Magazine editors Alfred Santasiere III and Jon Schwartz chat about our May cover story on Anthony Rizzo, which Al reported and wrote earlier this year. And while the first baseman — who re-signed with the Yankees this past offseason, after arriving in an deadline deal in 2021 — looks to get back on another dominant run like the one he enjoyed in April, he can lean on new hitting coach Dillon Lawson, who chatted with Jon for a Q&A. Lawson's simple philosophy — “Hit Strikes Hard” — betrays a remarkable complex and layered hitting system that has paid dividends so far in 2022. Learn more about your ad choices. On the latest episode of From The Back Fields To The Bronx, the show is back in 2022 and we catch you up on everything that has gone on in the New York Yankees organization this winter from a minor league perspective. Ricky Keeler is joined by Tampa Tarpons/FCL beat writer John Brophy and Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders beat writer Alex Kielar for this episode. The episode begins with John talking about his time covering Yankees prospect mini-camp and some of his observations when watching Anthony Volpe take batting practice, how Jasson Dominguez looks in camp, and who has impressed him amongst players he didn't see live in 2021, including Hayden Wesneski. Then, the trio looks at the biggest Yankees storylines of the offseason, such as Rachel Balkovec being the new Tarpons manager this year and some of the new coaches at the major league level being promoted from within the minors (Dillon Lawson, Desi Druschel, Casey Dykes). Of course, the conversation also goes towards the ongoing MLB lockout and some of the stories where the minor leagues could be directly impacted. Keep an eye out for future episodes of From The Back Fields To The Bronx as the minor league season gets closer.

Our January 2022 episodes end with a bang here with Yankees’ Director of Performance Science, David Whiteside. Dillon Lawson and David gave one of the best presentations I have seen on training environment at the 2021 I-70 virtual clinic. Whiteside has worked for the New York Yankees for the last 5 years. Whiteside did his postdoctoral work at the University of Michigan. Whiteside also has two different stints working with Tennis Australia as a sports performance scientist. Whiteside is a great conversation because he isn’t afraid to ask questions and then test those questions. He is a fresh voice in the baseball community. We cover a wide range of topics in this episode including elite mindset, training environment, equipment modifications, drill design, his time with Michigan Baseball, Tennis Australia and the New York Yankees. The ABCA Podcast is presented by Netting Pros. Netting Professionals are improving programs one facility at a time, specializing in the design, fabrication and installation of custom netting for backstops, batting cages, dugouts, bp screens and ball carts. They also design and install digital graphic wall padding windscreen, turf, turf protectors, dugout benches, dugout cubbies and more. The ABCA podcast is also sponsored by TeamBuildr. TeamBuildr is offering both in-season & off-season strength and conditioning programs specific to pitchers or position players. These programs come free with any TeamBuildr free trial. We had Yankees minor league aficionado Eli Fishman on the show straight from his dorm room. Eli breaks down all the hype the Yankees have going on in their farm system and how awesome Anthony Volpe truly is. He gives a great idea of what's to come with new hitting coach Dillon Lawson. We also get an idea of where Eli came from and why he needs to become the Brian Windhorst of Jasson Dominguez. Also Clint Frazier pissed some Yankee fans off with some tweets. All that and more on today's show. Outro song: "Energize Me" (via APM Music Library)
This is an episode cloaked with new uniforms for our guests as Jeff Albert, the newly named MLB hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals and Dillon Lawson, the newly hired hitting coordinator for the New York Yankees join our podcast. We find out very quickly that both of these guys are deep thinkers. Our listeners will be challenged as they take us on a tour through how they learn, how they see the trends inside of our game, how they have both find themselves moving over from the Houston Astros organization to new clubs which are eager to adapt more fully into the current climate and build for the future. There are a lot of great takeaways inside of this one as we open training environments, body movements inside of the swing and ideas that apply directly to all levels of baseball.
