Baseball boyfriends are by definition guys we like, but sometimes it takes a while to get to that part. Welcome to the show where we profile Yankees and Dodgers. LA brings us a defection story and a high profile international signing, and NY brings us a childhood Pesky pole situation and a putting one over on the parents with a dirty uniform. Spring training gives us Walkers and talkers, and Vegas tourism finds a way to put a city name on an As jersey. You too can own a baseball team, just ask Billie Joe Armstrong. WBC qualifiers wrap up with qHAR questions, and Chris Kluwe gets canned for dubious reasons. Read this about Rachel Balkovec. We say, “If you throw rocks really, really far you could hit Boston,” “audacious little f&*ker,” and “You dropped a lot of pirate words talking about a 5-year old.” Fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, get boosted, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. Some of the most influential women in sports tell their stories of courage, adversity, and triumph to trailblazer Bonnie-Jill Laflin, the first and only female NBA scout with the Los Angeles Lakers, in her new book, In A League of Her Own: Celebrating Female Firsts in Sports. A half-century after Title IX legislation leveled the playing field for women and girls, the time has come to celebrate the lives and careers of some of the most notable groundbreaking women in sports, while also encouraging future generations to make history of their own. In a League of Her Own: Celebrating Female Firsts in Sports shares the stories of nineteen impactful women, including Billie Jean King, Rachel Balkovec, Danica Patrick, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Laila Ali, Jeanie Buss, and Mary Lou Retton and gives them a voice to share their experiences across the sports industry. These iconic women open up to Bonnie-Jill Laflin, herself a trailblazer as the first and only female NBA scout, about the sobering realities females face in the sports world and the many obstacles they had to overcome. But they also celebrate the amazing support they received from colleagues, friends, family, and the women who came before them, and impart their own desires to inspire young women through their stories. They discuss such issues as the pressures of social media, the sexism that still exists in boardrooms and locker rooms, and their hopes for closer equality in the sports space. Their journeys are each unique, but together, they have changed the face of sports and culture forever. She is also the founder of Hounds and Heroes and Horses, a non-profit that pairs rescue dogs as service and therapy dogs with wounded warriors and veterans, as well as rescue horses as equine therapy for our recuperating service members. Hi, Dr. Sean here... Years ago I told my friend, Rachel Balkovec that I felt like my voice was not coming through. I was speaking like a recent school graduate applying for their first job, timid, and unclear. I wanted to speak more like Muhammad Ali, or Steve Jobs. You may not have sensed it, but until about a month ago I was still feeling like I was speaking in someone else's voice. I felt like for years the old me spoke so loudly, brazenly, and brashly that I needed to quiet that way down. The best analogy I can share is that I was like a TV on full volume at a bar where only some people want to watch the game. I was distracting for everyone else, and even the people watching are having a hard time with the volume. So I turned the knob down. I pleased everyone in the room as best I could by making it impossible to hear the TV unless you were sitting right near it. That led to people leaving the bar because they wanted to go where the TV was loud enough to enjoy the game, and their friends left with them. I was confused. What is going on and why am I not "breaking through"? What I now understand is that it's time to turn the vilume back up. Way up. It's not a bar at all, it's. night club, and I'm the music. I compromised for years. For as long as I can remember. That guy is gone. My personal development over the last six years has been intense, impactful, and intentional. I am the best husband I know how to be, the best father I know how to be, the best boss I know how to be, the best everything I know how to be, and I'm going to be even better tomorrow. Welcome to the club. Let's dance.

Today we pull an audible and are going live for the first time in Facts Not Feelings history. Fingers crossed for no technical glitches! With it being Jackie Robison Day, today we chat about breaking barriers. This week has been filled with women in sports doing just that: Rachel Balkovec's historic debut as the New York Yankees' Minor League team manager, San Francisco Giants' Alyssa Nakken makes making MLB history as first on-field female coach, going back to Kim Ng as she made history by becoming the first female and first Asian American General Manager in Major League Baseball history, or even Becky Hammon as she became the first woman to coach an NBA Team. As a proud female that is also an owner, I love seeing these stories. I find it even more important to talk about them on today April 15, Jackie Robinson Day. What Jackie did not only for the sport, but for the human race, cannot be quantified. Let us all continually learn from him and continually break the barriers. Rachel Balkovec grew up in Omaha, Nebraska. As a student at Skutt Catholic High School in Omaha, Balkovec played softball, soccer, and basketball. She initially attended Creighton University, where she was a catcher on the Creighton Bluejays softball team, but transferred to the University of New Mexico, where she also played catcher for the New Mexico Lobos. She graduated from New Mexico in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in exercise science. She then earned her master's degree from Louisiana State University in kinesiology. In 2018, she enrolled in Vrije University in the Netherlands to study human movement sciences, earning her second master's degree. Balkovec began her career in 2012 as a temporary contract strength and conditioning coach for the St. Louis Cardinals' Johnson City, Tennessee, minor-league affiliate. In that role, she won the Appalachian League's award for strength coach of the year. In 2014, she assumed a full-time role as the Johnson City affiliate's strength and conditioning coordinator, the first time a woman had held that role in baseball. In 2016, Balkovec was hired by the Houston Astros to be their Latin American strength and conditioning coordinator. She learned Spanish for the position, so she could better communicate with players. She was the first woman in that role in Major League Baseball. In 2018, she was promoted to be the Class AA Corpus Christi Hooks' strength and conditioning coach. After moving to the Netherlands to pursue a second master's degree at Vrije University, Balkovec worked for the Dutch baseball and softball programs as an assistant hitting coach. After graduating, she returned to the United States to work at a fellowship at Driveline Baseball, researching hitters' eye tracking and pitchers' hip movement. In November 2019, Balkovec was announced as the New York Yankees' newest hitting coach, to start in spring training 2020, again the first woman to hold such a position full-time. She also interviewed for a position as a quality control coach with the San Francisco Giants in fall 2019, but decided to take the Yankees' role. Since the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the 2020 Minor League Baseball season, she coached in the Australian Baseball League. She was part of the coaching staff of the 2021 All-Star Futures Game. On January 11, 2022, the Yankees announced that Balkovec will manage the Low-A Tampa Tarpons in 2022, making her the first woman to manage in affiliated baseball.

Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the latest news with Major League Baseball and the San Francisco Giants. The first order of business is the major news that Yankees hitting instructor Rachel Balcovec will become the first female manager in affiliated professional baseball. She will manage the Yankees' Low-A team beginning in 2022, and it puts her on a path to greater things in years to come. Notably, Giants manager Gabe Kapler interviewed Balkovec in 2019 for the position of quality control coach, where she would have worked as a hitting instructor and in strength and development. Balkovec opted to stay with the Yankees, and the move seems to have paid off. Kapler later hired Alyssa Nakken as a major league coach, and she became the first female to hold such a role in major league history. In the past year or so, many women have broken significant barriers, including Kim Ng becoming general manager of the Miami Marlins, the first female to hold that role.Ben also discusses the latest with the major league lockout. ESPN's Jeff Passan reported today that MLB is going to make a core-economics proposal to the MLB Players Association on Thursday. While this is extremely welcome news, as this will be the first of its kind proposal by either side since the lockout began on Dec. 2, Ben urges listeners not to be overly optimistic about the proposal leading to any significant momentum. It's entirely possible, if not likely, that the MLBPA will not respond positively to the proposal and we'll be back to square one. Finally, Ben discusses the Giants denying the Mets permission to interview pitching coach Andrew Bailey for the Mets' open bench coach position. It's debatable whether the position would be a promotion, and it's pretty late in the offseason for teams to be willing to give up a key member of their staff. Ben relates the situation to the Giants losing Donnie Ecker to the Rangers much earlier in the offseason, when they were willing to allow him to explore the role, one which he eventually was offered and accepted. Ben also discusses Austrailian LHP Genevieve Beacom becoming the first Australian professional baseball player over the weekend. The lefty tossed a scoreless inning and featured a fastball/breaking ball mix.Follow & Subscribe to the Locked On Giants Podcast on these platforms
