We wrap up our recordings from the 2024 ABCA Convention by catching up with Anthony Pla. These conversations have become an annual occurrence and are just one of the many reasons that I look forward to the beginning of January at the ABCA each and every year. One last thing... I would not be a good father if I didn't thank my son, Vinny Filingeri, for acting as my sound engineer for these shows. He did an awesome job! I hope that you have enjoyed our 2024 Convention shows as much as I did!
One of our last interviews from the 2024 ABCA convention was supposed to be with USA Baseball National Team Head Coach RJ Farrell but we wound up with an added bonus to the show by inviting Georgia Gwinnett College Head Coach Jeremy Sheetinger to join in. Now, RJ would be an unbelievable conversation on his own but having Sheets join us made it that much more incredible. There were even a few jabs thrown at Coach Butch Chaffin!
There are so many great baseball minds just roaming around at the ABCA convention. Paul Gallo and Mark “Pudge” Gjormand are 2 of them that I have had the pleasure of spending some time with both in Kansas City during the Youth Baseball Summit and at the 2024 ABCA Convention. We jump into youth baseball and do a little recap of the Summit.
Two-time National Coach of the Year Jim Schlossnagle enters his third season as the Texas A&M skipper as the Aggies embark on the 2024 campaign. Schlossnagle has enjoyed tremendous success during his 22-year career as a head coach at Texas A&M, TCU and UNLV, amassing an 893-440 (.669) mark. In addition to leading the Aggies, Schlossnagle officially is currently serving as the president of the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and began his presidency and leading the ABCA Executive Committee at the association's annual convention in January. He has been an ABCA member for 32 years and has consistently been involved in advancing the profession. Elected to the ABCA board in 2017, he is integral in shaping the association's legislative efforts and crafting the agenda for each year's convention. He served as the ABCA's Division I chairman in 2018, and in 2019 Schlossnagle began a string of four one-year stints as vice president, capped off by serving as the 1st Vice President in 2022.
As we continue along with our recordings from the ABCA convention we move to our next guest, Jim Chester of Gardner Webb University. Jim is going into his fifth year as the head coach of the Runnin' Bulldogs. Coach Chester is an active member of the American Baseball Coaches Association and has served as the South East Region Chair, as well as being on two committees. He has also been heavily involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, as well as several other charitable organizations. I am happy to call Coach Chester a friend.

As a coach, the leap from guiding my own kid's team to nurturing a high school squad was as thrilling as it was daunting; it's a transformation that's as much about the heart as it is about the playbook. That's why I was eager to sit down with Jimmy Filingeri, the head coach at Lourdes High School and the voice behind the Clearing the Bases Podcast. Together, we peel back the curtain on the life of a high school baseball coach, discussing how to foster trust through genuine care, the art of creating a competitive edge in practice, and the subtle yet impactful differences in team selection from one coaching role to the next. Jimmy's wisdom is a treasure trove for anyone stepping up to the plate as a new head coach.Laughter and candid stories punctuate this episode as we reflect on the evolution of youth sports and the transformative journey from athlete to mentor. Coach Filingeri shares an amusing tale about his early coaching days, involving my son and a bunting strategy that raised a few eyebrows, showing that the path to coaching success is often paved with unexpected decisions. The episode also touches on the critical role of parents in reinforcing team goals, and we navigate the tricky waters of honest communication with players about performance and playtime. In the home stretch, we take you behind the scenes of the Clearing the Bases podcast, revealing how a player's parent and an inspirational encounter led to its launch. The conversation shifts from lighthearted banter to earnest dreams as I list my fantasy podcast guests and their unparalleled impact on the game. Wrapping things up, Coach Jimmy and I engage in a lively debate over a fantasy baseball scenario, pitting two iconic Yankee lineups against each other. It's a testament to the enduring admiration and strategic intrigue that baseball instills in us, and a fitting end to an episode rich with insights and the indomitable spirit of the game.Support the show Follow: Twitter | Instagram @Athlete1Podcast https://www.athlete1.net Sponsor: The Netting Professionals https://www.nettingpros.com

As our youth prepare to head back to school, let's talk a bit about standards and rules that they will face. If you are a student, are you the kind of person that puts your best effort into excelling under rules, or do they no apply to you? Should they be changed to accommodate you? Let's talk about what happens when try to widen the plate.Speaking of plates, this is a baseball episode! Nolan Ryan is in this thing. I love baseball. It is a game of set rules. People who work them, and grow to follow them well, excel. People who don't want to conform don't last long. Let's talk about how those mentalities apply to godliness and life.Parents. Teachers. Authority figures. The bar you set for yourself and the youth says a lot about you now and a lot about who those youth will grow up to become. Balance is difficult. Sometimes we are too lenient. Sometimes we are too harsh. But God has shown us how challenging and hopeful balance can be... if we accept the rules. And if we continue to put our best effort to follow then. Perfection is unattainable. Thankful God never demanded that of his pitchers... I mean, people. - How wide is a baseball home plate?- Should it be widened for people who are struggling to throw strikes?- How do people on both end of the authority spectrum sometimes make this mistake?- If perfection isn't possible, why don't all pitchers just give up. Did Nolan give up?- How is God's grace, even while giving us rules, a great template for all our lives?
