Early in his reign as king, Saul made choices that disobeyed God. Saul's disobedience led to God taking the kingdom from Saul's family. This session we can lead kids to understand that people choose to follow God or choose to disobey God (sin). Help kids know that God deserves our obedience and that people are responsible for the choices they make. Each choice has consequences, and the kids are responsible for the choices they make.

Two soldiers have revealed they disobeyed Civil Defence orders so they could rescue people trapped in Esk Valley during Cyclone Gabrielle. Locals there were stranded on roofs as floodwaters raged around them. The two reservists, based near Napier say they were ordered to go on a rescue mission to Glengarry Road near Puketapu but decided the bigger emergency was in Esk Valley and went there instead. Jemima Huston reports. RNZ received the following response from the Commanding Officer of 5/7 Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Fortune. "The actions of the two 5/7 Battalion soldiers in the immediate response to Cyclone Gabrielle were nothing short of courageous and worthy of praise. "Often in these scenarios, our people and assets are prepositioned in certain locations based on previous experiences of weather events. "In this instance, our people, along with FENZ and NZ Police were responding to multiple requests for assistance in the middle of the night in very dynamic and challenging circumstances, where communications were being stretched. "They did not 'break the chain of command' and instead they should be described as being both incredibly experienced and senior personnel who used their initiative to respond to communities in need."

Meet the guest: Elissa Wall, speaker, advocate, mother and author, talks to Anita about her upbringing in the FLDS church, her forced marriage at the age of 14, and her ongoing journey to re-establish a relationship to her body after leaving the community. She is the author of the memoir "Stolen Innocence: My Story of Growing Up in a Polygamous Sect, Becoming a Teenage Bride, and Breaking Free of Warren Jeffs." The entire Bible is true, without error, authoritative, and clear; however, there are times—perhaps when trying to discern about a new job opportunity or other circumstances when there is seemingly more than one good option—when we may ask, “What does God want of me?” The Bible contains some very clear directives about what we should... The ark of the covenant was a physical reminder of God's tangible presence with His people. Rather than treat the ark with reverence, they treated the ark as a sort of good luck charm. Many of us categorize sins, whether we intend to or not. There are the major sins—the really bad ones like murder that are clearly wrong. Thankfully, few of us are prone to commit these sins, so we are pretty safe from them. Then there are the significant sins, like getting angry or lying. We know... Bible Reading: Psalm 32:1-5"Look what I got at Avani's birthday party, Axel!" Olivia took a magic slate out of a mesh bag and began scribbling on it as they drove home. "Now watch," she said as she lifted the top plastic sheet. "Look! The writing is all gone." As Olivia talked, her older brother simply stared out the window."Is something wrong, Axel?" asked Mom."No." Axel lapsed into silence again. Now you've told another lie, his conscience said. That makes two. Axel sighed deeply. It doesn't matter. It was such a little lie, he argued with his conscience--but he couldn't win the argument. "II told Dad a lie yesterday," Axel blurted out. "I'm the one who dented his car. I hit it with my bat when Jason and I were batting in the yard. I said Jason did it."Mom was silent for a moment. "I'm sorry to hear that," she said softly. "What are you going to do about it?"Olivia was busy with her magic slate and wasn't paying any attention to the conversation. "Look what I did!" she said. "I put a cat's tail on a rabbit!" She giggled. "Oops! I'll erase it and start over." Again she lifted the top plastic sheet, and like magic, her picture of the rabbit with a long tail disappeared.Mom smiled and spoke to Axel again. "We've all sinned, and that's something like drawing the wrong thing on a magic slate. When we trust Jesus as our Savior, He erases all our sin. But when we do something wrong, it can seem to us as though our slates--our hearts--are no longer clean. It gets in the way of us enjoying our relationship with God, and sometimes with other people--in this case, your dad. Tell both Dad and the Lord what you told me. Let them know you're sorry, and thank Jesus for making the slate clean.""Okay," said Axel with a sigh. "But Dad warned me about lying. I'm sure he won't just say it's all okay.""No, but he'll forgive you, and you'll have a clear conscience," said Mom. "Accept the discipline he gives and learn from it."Olivia smoothed the plastic sheet. "This time I'm going to do it right.""Me too, Olivia," said Axel. "Me too." -Barbara J. WestbergHow About You?Have you told a lie? Cheated? Made fun of someone? Disobeyed? Confess that sin to Jesus, and He'll forgive you. Thank Him for a clean slate--a clean heart--and for His Holy Spirit, who convicts your conscience when you do wrong. If what you did affects someone else, tell that person you're sorry too. Thank God that fellowship with Him and with others is restored when you confess your sin and ask for forgiveness.Today's Key Verse:Iconfessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guiltAnd you forgave me! When we rightly divide the scriptures, as we are commanded to in 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJB), we understand that while the born again, blood washed, New Testament Church Age believers is not bound by the Law of Moses, we are in fact under several commandants uniquely given to us. One of those is the commandment to get our eyes off of this sin-cursed world, with its 'affections and lusts', and get our eyes on our Saviour Jesus Christ and the things of Heaven, and eternity. This morning I want to preach you a clear, simple easy to understand but surprisingly hard to implement message about the things that we have seen, the things we now see, and the things that shall be. We stand on the edge of eternity, are you ready for what comes next?

As a professor at Moody Bible Institute, I regularly assign grades to my students. And I must admit that if Jonah was on my class roster, I’d be inclined to give him an F. After all, he failed to obey God’s direct command. Instead of doing what was asked, Jonah ran the other way (1:1–2). Even after his miraculous rescue, Jonah obeyed but preached the harshest sermon he could (3:1–4). Even when Nineveh repented, Jonah still had a negative attitude. He hoped to witness the city’s destruction and felt irritated and depressed at God’s mercy (4:1–3). The book ends with a question from the Lord that condemns Jonah’s ungodly attitude (v. 11). Why did Jonah disobey God? Nineveh was the capital city of Assyria, Israel’s enemy. He wanted to see them obliterated! Yet God’s assignment represented an open door for His mercy. Jonah tried to slam that door shut, but he should have known better. God’s plans can never be thwarted. As I reflect on Jonah’s story, there’s one factor which causes me to reconsider my grade—the book itself. Tradition holds that it was authored by Jonah, which would demonstrate that his heart had been changed by these events. The narrative is filled with personal details that most likely come from the prophet himself, including his undersea prayer (chapter 2) and the episode with the plant (4:5–9). He recounts his story with honesty and vulnerability. Jonah was not trying to make himself look good! If he could tell his story, magnifying the Lord’s love and compassion, then he was a man who’d been transformed by God. God is portrayed as the true Hero, and He turned all of Jonah’s failures into successes within His divine plan. >> Transparency and vulnerability with fellow believers can bring glory to God. It might be painful to share our failures honestly, but when it shows God working to conform us to the image of His Son (Rom. 8:29), then it’s worth it!
Materially speaking, one must abide by his parents' order when taking any major decisions. When might it be necessary to disobey them?
