This week's guest is Beatdown Sound, the powerhouse duo bringing authentic Jamaican-style sound system culture to the Midwest. Chef Chux and Selectress Kinky P break down their journey from discovering dub and reggae at legendary events like Notting Hill Carnival to building their own handcrafted five-way speaker system, engineered for deep, immersive bass. They share insights into the roots of dub, the influence of icons like King Tubby and Lee “Scratch” Perry, and why their sessions are more than just parties—they're a movement. From curating intimate, high-energy events on Chicago's South Side to serving up homemade patties and espresso at their shows, Beatdown Sound is redefining what a sound system experience can be. Whether you're a reggae enthusiast, a bass lover, or just curious about the culture behind dub music, this episode is packed with knowledge, passion, and plenty of bass therapy.

The Puerto Rican artist's new album harkens back to a wildly creative era when musicians first started tinkering with synths.
Jeff and I have been friends for 10 or 15 years, and he's one of those guys who never fails to turn me onto new music every time I see him. He's also pretty serious audiophile, and as we ramble a bit we never drop the ball. Hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did having it!

They also talk about why they like dub music and, of course, dig into a bit of eastern iowa music history and discuss Shawn Reed and the Night People records culture he curated.
This week my guest is Scientist. Welcome to one of the ultimate dub mixing legends ever ... in this interview I loved hearing about King Tubby and those magical early days in Jamaica when dub music was born. Its fair to say that Scientist has suffered at the hands of an unfair music industry that doesn’t respect dub mixing in the way it should, and we talk about this as well as Scientists own theories as to why Dub Music has grown to be such a powerful force in musicEmpire Soldiers : https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nhMu1T7jYacGluLX5FQt9-_CrZV-a6dkYwww.instagram.com/vibronicsdubwww.lifeindub.com/www.vibronics.co.uk/

WC0016 Berlin based artist, involved in a range of different musical projects over the years such as Sowing Paranoia, or Hunab. By taking part in all these different projects, WC has had the possibility to develop different musicas approaches on labels such as Silent Season, Eleve, Semantica, Area51 or Transhuman Records. In 2015 he founded along Abono the label ALLISANDNOT, a platform which defines the current musical focus of these two artists. To this date he has released 3 records on ALLISANDNOT with label mate Abono, where they have developed an instinctive approach to music making. His musical influences range from Ambient and Dub Music, to the roots of House and Techno on their more experimental regions. Abono, co founder of ALLISANDNOT and Remember to Forget. Lee "Scratch" Perry CD (born Rainford Hugh Perry, 20 March 1936 in Kendal, Jamaica) is a Jamaican reggae producer noted for his innovative studio techniques and production values. Perry was one of the pioneers in the development of dub music with his early adoption of effects and remixing to create new instrumental or vocal versions of existing reggae tracks. Perry has worked with Bob Marley and the Wailers, Junior Murvin, the Congos and Max Romeo.Perry broke ranks with Gibbs and formed his own label, Upsetter, in 1968. His first major single "People Funny Boy", which was an insult directed at Gibbs, sold well with 60,000 copies sold in Jamaica alone. It is notable for its innovative use of a sample (a crying baby) as well as a fast, chugging beat that would soon become identifiable as "reggae" (the new kind of sound which was given the name "Steppers"). Similarly his acrimonious 1967 single as Lee "King" Perry Run for Cover was likewise aimed at Sir Coxsone. From 1968 until 1972 he worked with his studio band The Upsetters. During the 1970s, Perry released numerous recordings on a variety of record labels that he controlled, and many of his songs were popular in both Jamaica and the UK. He soon became known for his innovative production techniques as well as his eccentric character. In 1970 Perry produced and released The Wailers track "Mr Brown" (1970) with its unusual use of studio effects and eerie opening highlighting his unique approach to production.
