Künstlernamen sind eine interessante Sache – der unseres heutigen Gastes zum Beispiel lässt bei Erstkontakt vielleicht an eine veraltete Bezeichnung für Elefanten, Rhinozerosse und andere Dickhäuter denken, ist aber offenbar "nur" eine Wortspielerei mit seinem Vornamen. Könnte aber auch mit "dicken Bässen" zu tun haben, denn der gebürtige Puerto-Ricaner Pachy Garcia ist seit über einem Jahrzehnt in Sachen Dub unterwegs. Dabei kombiniert der in Los Angeles lebende Musiker Techniken und Ästhetik dieser Reggae-Spielart mit einer so breiten wie exquisiten Palette anderer Genres; von Funk und "Mutant Disco" über schrägen Synth-Pop und Drum'n'Bass bis hin zu Krautrock und Chillwave. Mit seinem vergangenen Freitag erschienenen neuen Album "Another Place" wird er sicher an vorherige Erfolge anknüpfen können, wie den seiner Single "Trago Coqueto", welche die radioeins-Hörer*innen nicht umsonst auf Platz 53 der "100 beliebtesten Songs des Jahres 2023" wählten. Pachyman is a one-man dub band; that one man is Pachy Garcia, and though he's based in LA, he grew up in Puerto Rico, at a time when Jamaican music – especially dub reggae - was having a big impact on the island's music scene. Pachyman's new album is called Switched On, and is an homage to the era when musicians first began manipulating synthesizers to emit gloriously off-kilter bleeps, bloops, and whooshes - think Switched On Boleros and Switched On Bach. Pachyman - "Trago Coqueto," a 2023 single on ATO Records L.A.-based artist Pachy García — who records as Pachyman — reflects on his homeland of Puerto Rico on today's Song of the Day. “It's like a stream of consciousness,” he tells Remezcla. “I wanted to play with the idea of being a bartender, the profession of getting people drunk, and my constant dilemma about returning home – which I am still not ready to do. The Puerto Rican, LA-based Pachy García, or Pachyman to his fans, was weaned on local reggae heroes and classic dub. Now he creates his own style of dub influenced by Caribbean rhythms. The latest recipient of the Latin Alternative Music Conference Discovery Award, Pachyman's “Big Energy” sees Garcia playing all the instruments heard on the song.
