Dustie Waring is a guitarist in American progressive metal band Between The Buried And Me. The North Carolina based band made a name for itself with its technical and groovy sound and their willingness to adapt and evolve with every album. The band recently released their tenth record 'Colors II', which serves as a follow-up to their acclaimed 2007 release 'Colors'. We spoke with Dusty about not repeating themselves, songs that are difficult to play, working on an album during the pandemic, being proud of what you create, art that is willing to take risks, and a lot more! Gilbert W. Foertsch Gilbert Walter Foertsch was born on July 24, 1933 to parents Oscar and Edna (Polster) Foertsch. He was reborn by God's grace in Christ Jesus in the waters of Holy Baptism on August 10, 1933 at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, Evanston, Indiana by Rev. F. Breuer. His baptismal faith was nurtured through God's Word taught in his home and at church. On March 30, 1947, at St. John's, he publically confessed his baptismal faith and was confirmed by Rev. Otto Mueller. For Gib's confirmation verse Pastor Mueller chose Revelation 2:10 “Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.” Gib rejoiced to receive the life-giving body and blood of Jesus. On April 12, 1958 the Lord united Mona Faye Huebschman and Gib in the blessed estate of marriage. They were married at Emmanuel Lutheran Church by Rev. John E. Schroeder. The Lord blessed them with 63 years of married life together. God also blessed their marriage with the gift of children: Jeff & David. God blessed Gib's life with many special people as he served God in his vocations at home, church, work, and in the community. He served the Lord laboring for 42 years for Can Clay. He had also served the Lord as a soldier in the U.S. Army. Gib was an active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church were he served faithfully on several boards and committees, serving as a deacon or trustee for 32 years. On August 21, 2021, God called Gib home to heaven. He fell asleep in Jesus' loving arms at PCMH. On Saturday, August, 2021 the Lord delivered Gib from this valley of sorrow and took him Home to Himself in Heaven. Gib fell asleep in Jesus' nail scarred hands at Perry County Memorial Hospital, Tell City, at the age of 88. Left to look forward to the grand family reunion that awaits all Christians on the Last Day in the resurrection of their bodies and the life of the world to come are his wife, Faye, sons, Jeff Foertsch of Tell City, IN and David (Mary) Foertsch of Jasper, IN; grandchildren, Ryen, Dustie, Kyle, Kaci; great grandchildren, Clara, Alexander, Ruby, Sawyer, Julia and Conner. He was preceded Home to Heaven through death by his parents and brother Oscar. Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.

In this episode, Zoe speaks with mother of four daughters, Leona Bugden. Leona talks about her experience of being a teenage mum and now parenting her eldest daughter who is a teenager herself. Leona also has three younger children with her husband Ross. She talks about her experiences with the NICU as well as pregnancy and birth during covid. KEY TAKEAWAYS Leona found out she was pregnant with her first child at just 18. It was a huge shock, it took her a while to take a test as she kept having periods and was on the pill. At first Leona didn't even consider that she would be a mum but she then made the decision to carry on with the pregnancy, her mum was so supportive and helped her in every way from the very beginning. Some of Leona's teachers were supportive but the head of her school was absolutely awful to her, luckily her mum stood up for her and took no nonsense at all. Leona finished her a-levels and had her little girl Elyssa in the September that year. When Elyssa was 1 Leona went to university, her mum provided so much help in order for her to do this. But even so it was so difficult splitting herself in so many directions, she often felt like she wasn't managing any aspect. Parenting a teenager can be so difficult and worlds away from a baby or toddler. Leona wants to prepare Alyssa for the world but she also wants to protect her at the same time. It's a balance between giving her freedom, support and protection. Leona getting together with her now Husband Ross at 23 was quite a difficult time, for all involved. But he has been a great father figure to Elyssa and even asked her before proposing to Leona! Elyssa now has three younger sisters, but Ross treats all of them exactly the same, Elyssa was his first daughter. Leona had straightforward births with her first two daughters, Alyssa and Indigo. With her third daughter, Willow, she had a scare at 28 weeks with a bleed, she was ok but was then born prematurely at 34 weeks and had to have a stay in the NICU. With Leona's fourth daughter, Dustie, she lost her plug at 30 weeks, she went into hospital and once there she started to bleed. She was admitted and she had to do all of this alone because of Covid. Her waters broke but when she got examined she was actually less dilated than when she first came in and was taken to the labour ward. Sadly, the midwife now caring for her wasn't being very supportive, Leona was very alone and very scared. Eventually a Dr came and examined her again and Dustie was born 28 minutes later! BEST MOMENTS “She was how I became a mummy” “I'm not going through with it, I'm having a baby” “She was very much like a second mum…she has this incredible relationship with Elyssa that is different to any of the others because she helped raise her” “I want to keep her young but I want to let her grow” “You hand over your whole life in this little person and you are handing over every little bit of trust you have” VALUABLE RESOURCES www.petalscharity.org www.tommys.org www.arc-uk.org www.sands.org.uk ABOUT THE GUEST Leona Bugden @leona_bugden ABOUT THE HOST Zoe Cresswell Devoted mother of two (and a big hairy dog), UK trained midwife, doula and personal trainer, specialising in pre and postnatal fitness. Zoe was born in the UK and before moving to Dubai in 2013 and worked as a midwife in central London, both in a birth centre and a very busy NHS hospital. Although late to the scene, Zoe is an aspiring athlete having won numerous triathlons and representing Great Britain where she placed within the top 10 on the world stage. With her husband James, the couple will soon be launching their cloth nappy company, Bop & Bee, where they hope to inspire families to swap a few disposable nappies a day for the more planet friendly option of cloth. Zoe's goal is to share her knowledge and experience, tell real life stories, manage expectations and open up those often difficult conversations. Zoe's own motherhood journey has been full of twists and turns as she put everything on hold and went through numerous miscarriages and rounds of IVF. What keeps them going? 726 days. That is how long the tree sit on Yellow Finch Lane has been standing to block the progress of the Mountain Valley Pipeline. The proposed Mountain Valley Pipeline will cover a 301 mile corridor of pressurized, fracked liquified natural gas. I visited the site of the tree sits and conducted this interview because I wanted to understand why they are resisting the pipeline. The tree sitters and their ground support are living in very primitive conditions. What keeps them going? The position these tree sitters are taking is most likely a very radical position in the view of some Onward Podcast listeners. I’m not advocating that you take their view. I am asking that you listen with the intent to understand. Episode Highlights: First Emily introduces Dustie Pinesap. Then Dustie talks about the Mountain Valley Pipeline. She describes a “Tree Sit”. These tree sitters have been resisting the pipeline since 5 September 2018. Also the tree sitters keep supplies in the tree suspended from ropes and they can sustain themselves for 2 months in tree. Next Dustie explains how they protect the trees from being cut down. The tree sitters are protecting the last remaining stand of trees on pipeline. What keeps the tree sitters motivated? Dustie explains how they pass time. Next Emily asks how people can get involved or support the effort to resist the pipeline. Dustie explains that it’s quiet on the day of the interview but it’s not always so quiet. After that, Dustie explains how she feels the land and trees should be treated and that everything is interconnected. In other words, we need each other - not a lot of material things. We can’t engineer our way out of this problem. Finally, we don’t have enough natural resources and we’re abusing what we have.
