Interview by Angela CroudaceNe Obliviscaris' clean vocalist and violinist Tim Charles sat down with HEAVY to reflect on the band's journey, the legacy of their landmark album Citadel, and what it's like bringing classical violin into extreme metal.Formed in 2003, the Melbourne-based band didn't reach the international stage until their second album, Citadel, released in 2014. “It was our first proper record deal,” Charles explains, “and that made all the difference. Suddenly we were in stores worldwide and able to secure booking agents and festival slots overseas.” The band's debut, Portal of I, was self-released, and though praised by fans, lacked the reach Citadel was able to achieve with the support of Season of Mist.Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Citadel was recently remastered by Mike Lewis, who also helmed the band's latest release, Exul. “We wanted to bring a bit of the Exul touch to Citadel,” Charles said. “It's slightly more open, a bit heavier, and filled with little details that bring new life to the mix.”Tim also shared his excitement about returning to the stage with the epic 23-minute track Painters of the Tempest in its entirety — a feat not attempted in nearly a decade. “It's still one of our best songs. Performing it live again was incredibly satisfying.”Known for weaving violin into every corner of Ne Obliviscaris' sound, Charles discussed how his classical training shaped the band's musical direction. “I was always inspired by guitarists like Jeff Loomis and John Petrucci,” he said, “and I'd think — how can I do that on violin?” With few metal violinists to look up to, Charles essentially invented his own approach, blending classical, jazz, and metal into a seamless force. The band's recent collaboration with Swedish act Imminence, whose own frontman plays violin, shows that the path Charles helped forge is inspiring a new generation. “It's been amazing to see more non-traditional instruments in metal,” he says. “Hopefully, there's more to come.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Watch My Dying - Napköszörü (Egyenes Kerülö, 2024) Door Jason Köhnen (Bong-Ra, Celestial Season, Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble) Beluister de uitzending met Jason Watch My Dying. Bleed From Within - In Place of your Halo (Zenith, 2025) Jasper Verhorst (TerraDown, A Life Aligned) Beluister de uitzending met Jasper Want, een band die ik wil noemen die men zeeeker in 2025 moet checken is Bleed From Within. Terzij De Horde - In One of These, I am your Enemy (In One of These, I am your Enemy, 2022) Daan de Neef (voormalig VVD-kamerlid, speechschrijver burgemeester Carola Schouten) Beluister de uitzending met Daan Heel simpel: dat is Terzij de Horde uit Utrecht. In one of these I am your enemy'. Love it!
Interview by Kris PetersMelbourne instrumental outfit The Omnific are a band who have managed to traverse the boundaries normally separating instrumental music from that with vocals, blending a variety of techniques and impossible-to-resist musical precision that appeals to all lovers of music.Following the release of three groundbreaking EPs - Sonorous (2016), Kismet (2017), and The Minds Eye (2019) - The Omnific found themselves and their music reaching all corners of the globe, even attracting the attention of Clay Gober from Polyphia who featured on the single Antecedent from the band's debut 2021 album Escapades. In 2023, the group went from strength to strength; supporting Polyphia in Australia, and Ne Obliviscaris in Europe and North America, capping it off with a landmark 46-date world tour in support of single Phat Mackerel, including festivals Euroblast (DE), Reeperbahn (DE) and Bigsound (AU) before starting off 2024 supporting The Hu on home soil.A major feature of their success has been an amalgamation of styles and genres which dives through prog, metal, djent, funk, synth-driven soundscapes, and more. With their sophomore album The Law Of Augmenting Returns being unleashed yesterday, HEAVY caught up with one of two bass players, Matt Fack, to find out more. We start by asking about the album title, The Law Of Augmenting Returns."A lot of thought went into that," Fack nodded, "because the whole concept was like, well, the law of diminishing returns seems to be a pretty common concept, mainly, I guess, in the commerce world. But in life, when you think about it, I guess, the more you do something, the less return you get from that. So I was trying to think, what could we sort of, I guess, due to like, be like, what's the opposite? Like the more you do something, the more reward you get out of it.And augmenting also relates to music, like diminished to augmented. So that fits to music as well. I guess you can say it's got some cool meaning to it."We ask if there was any more pressure going into this album following the universal success of Escapades."I guess you can think about it like your own personal pressure," he measured. "Like, I want to outdo myself from the prior record. I guess when it comes to just being creative… I wouldn't say it's like pressuring myself to do something, because it all kind of flows naturally when you're feeling like in the moment. I'm just thrilled it sort of just came about as it did without putting pressure on ourselves."In the full interview, we discussed The Omnific's new album, The Law of Augmenting Returns, in greater detail. We talked about the concept behind the album title and the pressure associated with releasing a sophomore album. Matt also delved into the creative journey behind the album, discussing the process of incorporating live musicians and selecting singles, as well as the significance of their production team and the impact of guest spots on the album. He also provided insights into their upcoming European tour and plans for future performances, offering a comprehensive overview of their musical endeavours and creative aspirations.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Interview by Kris PetersFresh from a run of Australian shows with Ne Obliviscaris and Rivers Of Nihil last September, German based post metal outfit The Ocean are set to return this June for their first headlining dates in this country in almost a decade. The band left an indellible impression on concert-goers when they were here late last year and have promised to up the ante even more for this tour which starts in Brisbane on June 5.Bringing their biggest production yet, as well as legendary US hardcore pioneers Cave In for their first Aussie shows EVER and insanely heavy Danish label mates LLNN, The Ocean will be showcasing last years ninth album Holocene, said to be the bands most exploratory and varied release yet.Guitarist Robin Staps sat down with HEAVY to reveal more."We're looking forward to being back," he began. "We were only over there last September but we're stoked to come back with a full headline set this time and to present you guys our new record Holecene, which we haven't been touring with so far. We just played one track on the last tour so there's goign to be a lot of songs we haven't really played live on your precious continent before and we're stoked to do that.""I'm in the middle of tour preparations right now," he continued. "Inevitably you start dealing with a tour more than a couple of weeks in advance. There's a lot of logistics involved. We're also doing South East Asian dates before we get to Australia and just the whole luggage and merch shipping and transport situation is extremely complicated. So unfortunately right now it's quite mundane logistics stuff, but i'm very much looking forward to finally being over there and touring and playing shows. We love Australia, ity's always been great. This time I have a feeling we're actually going to be able to enjoy it (laughs). The last couple of times it was always super early morning flights so we just didn't sleep. I was like a zombie."In the full interview, Robin talks more about what to expect from The Ocean on the tour, how the shows will be different as headlining events, the extra production and what that means for the performance, what has changed with The Ocean siunce their last headline Aussie tour almost a decade ago, bringing Cave In over for the first time and how that band helped shaped The Ocean's sound, how Holocene was received by fans, the slightly different sound of that album and why they went in that direction, fitting songs with different structures into a set list and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Crayter) chose “Portal Of I,” the debut album of Australian prog metal band Ne Obliviscaris, which became one of his COVID-era comfort listens. We're really jazzed to get back behind the mic to discuss some great, unique music. Thanks to Chris and the MinnMax community for their ongoing generosity! Interview by Kris PetersYou certainly can't accuse Melbourne rock/metal hybrid Ne Obliviscaris from doing things in shades. After four long years - their last Australian tour was in 2019 - Ne Obliviscaris has announced a run of four dates this September, bringing with them an international assortment of fellow metallers in The Ocean Collective and Rivers Of Nihil. The last time Rivers Of Nihil were out here was actually on that tour, when they made their debut Down Under and left a trail of sonic devastation in their wake.Despite the Exul tour, named after Ne Obliviscaris' recent album, being a homecoming of sorts for the hometown heroes, many punters are just as excited to see the return of Rivers Of Nihil - who are armed with their own new album The Work - with bassist/backing vocalist Adam Biggs joining HEAVY to discuss things more."It is how it is," he shrugged when asked if the run of four shows in five days would be draining. "We always just keep track of things and do the shows... it's the job (smiles). It will be an awesome five days I'm sure."We ask if he thinks Ne Obliviscaris will be hitting the stage with a point to prove after so long away."Hopefully," he laughed. "Hopefully they come out with some motivation and some will to kick some ass. I'm sure we will as well. It's been a little while for us too. I wanna see everybody really motivated on these shows to give the crowd the best of the best they can."In the full interview we discuss Rivers Of Nihil's first trip to Australia with Ne Obliviscaris and what they were like to tour with, playing with The Ocean Collective and what they are expecting, what to expect from Rivers Of Nihil live, the diversity of bands on the line-up and how important that is, their new album The Work and how much of that we are likely to be hearing, their most recent single The Sub Orbital Blues and if that is a stand alone single or part of the next album cycle, what's next for Rivers Of Nihil and more.

This episode features album reviews for Gideon, Gorod, Ne Obliviscaris & Phantom Elite. A Retro Review of Coal Chamber's self titled debut, turning 25 years old this year. A recap of our experience at a Fear Factory & Static X concert.

Interview by Kris PetersAustralian extreme progressive outfit Ne Obliviscaris have endured a nightmare run of misfortunes in the lead up to their new opus Exul, which is out now.Drum tracking for the album was laid down in March 2020 in Nashville, Tennessee, but, unlike many who made it home before the world shut down, Ne Obliviscaris' guitarist Benjamin Baret and bass player Martino Garattoni weren't so lucky.Originally due to fly home straight after tracking, the pair were instead forced to remain in America indefinitely until things cleared enough for their safe passage home. What should have been a swift follow up to the critically acclaimed 2017 album Urn instead dragged on for more than two more years and saw members of the band all deal with personal loss, relationship problems and other life events that, when coupled with the frustrations of constant delays with the album, almost cast an untenable wedge within the band that threatened to possibly force a premature end to proceedings.Thankfully, as they say, time heals all wounds and with Exul finally ready for mass consumption vocalist XEN sat down for a chat with HEAVY to go through a tumultuous last couple of years."It will be a great relief (when the album comes out)," he sighed. "The last few years have been quite difficult - as everyone else has been through. There was a couple of times throughout the last few years where we didn't know whether or not the album would make it. There was a lot of pauses, a lot of frustrations and I think it's been a great relief to see the light at the end of the tunnel. It's been a long time coming and I think people will be able to tell the amount of effort and patience and frustrations that were channelled into this album and hopefully people will be able to appreciate it. It will be a cathartic moment for everyone to be able to listen to this for us."In the full interview, XEN talks about Exul musically, the contrasting emotions throughout and how the band measured the scale of that, the darker core to Exul and where it comes from, writing the opposing vocal lines between himself and Tim Charles, how close the band came to breaking up, the almost theatrical nature to the music and how difficult that is to create, how this album differs to Urn, the band's 20 year anniversary and more.
Violinist and singer Tim Charles from Ne Obliviscaris is back! This time we're talking about their new album Exul, his recent mental heath struggles and turn towards mindfulness to overcome them, taking his new outlook on life on the road, working with is daughter in the "Graal" video, and more! Emerging from the shadows of a music world left in turmoil, Brisbane blackened death metal outfit Black Lava have wasted little time in establishing themselves on the national radar.Comprising members and former members of known acts such as Hadal Maw and Ne Obliviscaris, Black Lava have remained relatively quiet in the lead up to their debut album Soul Furnace which strikes today, preferring to let their music rather than their profile dictate terms. With a sound deeply rooted in old school sensibilities that embrace groove-laden melodies and progressive elements, Black Lava have created a uniquely crushing and brutally heavy foundation that transcends labels and instead concentrates on the one thing that seemingly gets forgotten about too often in the modern industry. The music.Founding member and drummer Dan Presland sat down with HEAVY on the eve of unleashing Soul Furnace to bring us up to speed.*NOTE: INTERVIEW WAS CONDUCTED PRIOR TO THE ALBUM RELEASE SO WHEN DAN AND HEAVY TALK OF IT BEING OUT TOMORROW IT IS ACTUALLY NOW!!!*"I guess I am more known for extreme metal, progressive metal releases over the last 15 years so this is something different for me," he began. "It's more of a rock n roll, old school vibe and it's been quite a different process to get it all put together. It was very much a capture the moment rush, rush, rush to get it done to meet the deadline sort of thing, but I'm actually very happy with the end result. Typically speaking I'm normally calculated and planned out with the releases I do so this one is a bit more rock n roll but I really enjoyed the process."Prior to dropping the album Black Lava released the singles Northern Dawn, Eye Of The Moon and the title track, with Presland agreeing those three songs are a good sonic representation of Soul Furnace as a whole."I definitely think so," he nodded. "All three have different soundscapes going on. There's some more upbeat stuff on Northern Dawn and some blasty stuff in there, and the other two are a bit more rock n roll with a bit of mood, so I definitely think those three are a good representation of the whole record."In the full interview, Dan talks more about Soul Furnace, what types of things Black Lava considered going into their debut album, finding the balance between old school influence and modern music trends, the compact running time of Soul Furnace which comes in at a tick over half an hour, the nature of the fantasy themed lyrics, forming during COVID and how that impacted the bands formation and development, their double launch show at the Bendigo Hotel in December and more.

Sydney death/doom outfit Black Trillium have recently released the hauntingly beautiful yet still brutal single "Banished" from their upcoming debut full length The Fatal Shore, which is due out on April 29.Guitarist/vocals Simon Skipper joins HEAVY to talk about the single and shed some light on the album."'Banished' started with a riff I wrote", he explained. "I came up with the first five notes just mucking around and then I heard the rest of the riff and I wrote that out and showed Zach (Carlsson, vocals/bass) and he was super excited by it and he actually came back with a full song. We added stuff and changed bits and came up with this really dark outro. We wanted to have some diversity with the album and we normally do a lot of slower, sludgier stuff but "Banished" is one of the groovier, more upbeat - and there's the chorus which is a bit of a hook - and it centres around that riff which we thinki is a big part of the song. Every metal song has to have a great metal riff (laughs)".In the full interview Simon talks about "Banished" in greater detail and breaks it down lyrically, explains the concept behind The Fatal Shore, the research they put into the historical content and specific places they visited, modernising an old story to reflect current problems, having Tim Charles from Ne Obliviscaris on the single, how the upcoming album differs to debut EP The Locked Woods, releasing music out of order in relation to a concept album, how Covoid 19 has affected Black Trillium and more.
Riley McShane from Allegaeon chats to HEAVY Mag about their forthcoming Australian tour.
HEAVY Mag chats to Adam Biggs from Rivers Of Nihil about their forthcoming Australian tour.
For their first shows on home soil in over 12 months Ne Obliviscaris are bringing with them a stellar support group, headed by Brisbane's Caligula's Horse and rounded out by three international heavyweights in Allegaeon, Beyond Creation and Rivers of Nihil. It is a travelling extravaganza dubbed The Painted Progression tour and one which clean vocalist and violinist for Ne Obliviscaris, Tim Charles, struggles to contain his enthusiasm about."We're all kind of related but different", he laughed. "Caligula's Horse are obviously one of Australia's best progressive rock metal bands. Their last album 'In Contact' was just phenomenal and I guess they're a little more on the melodic side than some of the other bands. Allegaeon have a new album coming out in April which I've been lucky enough to get an advance copy of and I think it's the best thing they've ever done. Those guys are a really fantastic live band, really technical but with lots of melody as well and super tight live. Beyond Creation - some of our Australian fans will already know them if they came and saw our tour back in 2014 - are again a phenomenal live band; super technical but melodic in their own way and a great bunch of guys as well - as are all of the bands on the bill - and Rivers of Nihil put out one of the most surprising albums of last year. It was a real progressive wonder of an album with these sweeping saxophone solos and all this sort of stuff and we really felt they were a perfect fit for us in the way that the approach being heavy but also progressive and extreme at the same time. They do it differently to us but in a way that we felt was really compatible with what we're doing. Every band is a little bit different but they all kind of fit together".When Ne Obliviscaris first burst onto the Melbourne music scene in 2003 it is fair to say they were a breath of fresh air on a scene that was starting to choke up with progressive music. They refused to follow a set blueprint and instead set about forging their name in their own image, albeit it one which drew influence from some of the heavyweights of the time."Back then there was some pretty significant things happening in the metal world that impacted me", Charles recalled. "It was probably not too long before that that I discovered Opeth through their Blackwater Park album and Enslaved came out with an album and Dream Theatre had not long before come out with Scenes From A Memory. All of these albums were my favourite records at that time so when we were starting this band I never wanted to sound like anybody but the idea that you could be an extreme and really heavy metal band but at the same time be melodic and have beautiful elements to your music was something that I had kind of recently discovered and been inspired by. Some of those bands like Opeth and Enslaved that were doing that opened our horizons to the fact of let's not have any barriers when we write music. Let's just write music and if we think it's good it doesn't matter what genre it is. If it's metal or acoustic or prog or classical or jazz let's not care. Let's just try to write good music and not give a fuck what anyone thinks we should sound like and that's how we came up with our sound because I don't think anyone sounds like we do, and all we did was just try to be ourselves. We just tried to get rid of the barriers and let each member be themselves in the band. We're all quite different musicians and everyone has that opportunity in our band to have that creative voice and that shines through in the music I think".With their debut album 'Portal of I' in 2012 Ne Obliviscaris created a masterpiece that not only resonated with the fans but also had mainstream media singing their praises. It was one of the first times music of this nature had reached the ears of the mainstream and be met with appraisal and was a significant moment in Australian progressive metal music."That album was our first real attempt to create", Charles reflected. "It was our first album so it was our first attempt to create a piece of music that was exactly what we wanted and as a first attempt, it's never going to be perfect in every way. You learn something from every album but that was really something different to what a lot of people were expecting from a lot of the stuff that was being released in 2012 and so people would hear that record and there was a lot of people that either loved it and thought it was fantastic or they just didn't get it at all - which is fine as well (laughs), but it is that thing where a few people seemed to connect with it and it gave us a lot of hope and positivity for the band in regards to believing that as a strong first step we could continue to move forward. It took us nine years to release that first album and it was really, really difficult to just make it that far in the first place. There were so many times in the band's early career where we almost broke up. Our lead guitarist Benji is from France and his Australian visa got denied back in 2010 and he was deported and the band was basically on hiatus for 18 months and a few of the guys were talking about quitting the band - and Dan our drummer actually did for a little while - but thankfully we managed to get Benji back to Australia and the band got back together essentially and we released the album and when it did well it gave us the faith of hey it's taken us nine years to get here but maybe all the struggle has been worth it and maybe we should keep pushing and see what we can do with some more releases".Most bands would be content to plagiarize their own successful formula on their sophomore album, but not so Ne Obliviscaris who decided to add more jazz and flamenco elements to 2014's 'Citadel' - a move that only served to solidify their growing reputation."We don't really know any other way, to be honest", Charles shrugged. "We just write and however it comes out is how it comes out. We try not to overthink it. We don't think let's write an album like this or let's write a song like that. We just write and we really don't care what people want us to sound like, but we have the confidence that we can write good music so the bar that we set is for us to be happy and for us to think that it's great music. We have confidence that if we really believe these are the best songs we can possibly write at this stage of our lives then it will find an audience and people can connect with it. If it's different all it will mean is maybe some people won't like it as much but if it's good then new people will discover you and that was our same approach on 'Urn' as well which was different and the next album we do I'm sure will probably be different again and some people will like the older stuff more and some people might like the newer stuff more and that's fine. But if you try to do stuff to please people then you lose that genuine aspect to your music. We're trying to create art, it's not pop songs so we don't really care what people want it to sound like. We just want to make sure that we love and believe in what we're doing first and foremost".Kris Peters TOUR DATES Thursday, May 9: Lion Arts Factory, Adelaide - Lic/AA Friday, May 10: 170 Russell, Melbourne Saturday, May 11: Manning Bar, Sydney Sunday, May 12: The Triffid, Brisbane Tickets on sale from neobliviscaris.com.au

We discuss his new band with RVP & Beav from The Devin Townsend Project, Jon Howard of Threat Signal and fellow SYL alumni Jed Simon. Among other stuff I, of course, have to talk a little bit about Strapping Young Lad. Tim Charles of Ne Obliviscaris discusses his first band. Finally, I recommend Rumors of Free Lunch. Tim Charles is the epitome of a modern music business entrepreneur. He plays violin and sings with his Australian metal band Neobliviscaris. He’s also a songwriter, booking agent, artist manager, tour manager, publicist, business executive, label manager, concert promoter, artist liaison, lecturer, teacher, key note presenter, consultant, content creator and social media manager. On this episode of The Music Business Facts podcast Tim discusses the roles he performs to bring multiple streams of income into his business.
"Founded in Melbourne in 2003, Ne Obliviscaris took the inspiration for their name from the proud motto of Clan Campbell based in Argyll, Scotland, which means "forget not". From the start, this collective of exceptional musicians made it clear that they did not intend to follow any trends or walk on well-trodden paths. Their first demo, 'The Aurora Veil' (2007) had a massive impact in the metal underground far beyond the fifth continent and their debut full-length 'Portal of I' (2012) reached the mainstream music press, which praised their unique array of influences and characteristic virtuoso violin. Their second album 'Citadel' (2014) added avant-garde approaches including jazz, flamenco, progressive rock, and many other wide-ranged influences to their solid metal base. Parallel to their success on a critical level and with an ever-growing host of die-hard fans, the band have increased their reputation as an excellent live act with extensive touring literally around the globe." Ben talked to Xen about their new album, Urn, how he writes his vocals and what he does in his spare time on tour. Aired 1st February 2018. Three studio albums into a very colourful career, Ne Obliviscaris have reached the pinnacle of their creative output in their new album Urn. “Each album has grown and grown.” Says vocalist Xenoyr. “With this one, the reception has been really positive, especially in overseas markets.“It’s different in how the production has hanged, a lot of people have commented on that. We wanted something that represented more of our live sound. A lot of people have asked why we sound heavier live than on our CDs, and we’ve tried to replicate that.”This particular release has a fair density split duality of sound Urn, on the live stage, was written for the live stage. “For me,” Xen begins, “This tracks feel a lot more natural to play live.” Some of the darkest songs Ne Obliviscaris have ever written, Xen says he can relate to the song’s context a lot more and therefore, is able to relay the album’s true meanings in a much more authentic way – all the better for their upcoming Australian tour.“When I write the lyrics, with the dark stuff we were going through, there’s a dark undertone through the whole album, reflective of the time we were writing it,” Xen says, musing. “The lyrical content has some relation to that – a lot of the time I’m on stage I’m in another world anyway, so when I’m feeling the lyrics, they actually mean something to me and that’s most important.”Ne Obliviscaris’ talent for song writing combined with their powerful performances are the aspects fans will most look forward to about the tour. “There’s a whole new energy to our shows now we have a new bassist,” says Xen.With only the limits of their own imagination to compete with, it will certainly be interesting to see how Ne Obliviscaris manage to outdo themselves on the next album. “When we write, we write for ourselves. It’s not a conscious thought to try and outdo ourselves, it’s where we are at that point in time.“Writing the material, the music comes to s in terms of what we’re trying to do – if we set ourselves a goal of trying to outdo ourselves, we’ll probably shoot ourselves in the foot. Just writing music for the love of music is what comes first.”
Australia's visionary NE OBLIVISCARIS return with their stunning new album 'Urn'. The album sees the forward thinking band hone their unique and expansive style that blends the best of both the extreme and the progressive sides of metal. Epic tracks like "Intra Venus" and "Libera (Part's 1 and 2)" exude power, grace, and the confidence of a band at their best. NE OBLIVISCARIS are one of modern metal's most dynamic bands, and 'Urn' is yet another masterpiece.
I welcome the vocalist and violinist of Ne Obliviscaris Tim Charles to the show. We discuss the band's latest album Urn, their recent tour with Allegaeon, the film Tangled, violin playing, and a lot more. This week we get weirdly political and anthropological. Well, maybe not weirdly. We are weird dudes after all. Not a lot of news, so we shitpost about Wintersun a bit more. Mini balls-deep on Mastodon while discussing their new single. We talk about a bunch of metal from places around the world that we normally aren't well attuned with. Like Wisdom Eyes (thanks Bandcamp!), Violet Cold, and Sanatana. Also more Psykup, Eden gushes over Spectral Lore, we discuss the Ne Obliviscaris news. Then we bring back underrated releases with Gire's self titled. Finally, cool people time gets weird. Enjoy!

Yeah, that's the actual title! Thanks for listening to us for 20 episodes now! We're going to keep going. This week we talk about a bunch of new music, including Sylosis, Babymetal, Voivod, Myrkur, Vektor and Danny Tunker's (Alkaloid) Bare Trap! We also talk about the controversial Patreon by Ne Obliviscaris. Then we go into two topics, the balance between being in a band with friends versus professionalism, and bands that take forever to release their next albums. Then we do our now-weekly "balls deep" on Blind Guardian, which we both really love! Also don't forget the cool people time at the end!

Daniel Tompkins lead singer of TesseracT guests this week, bringing us insight into his decision to return to the band, what it was like to reclaim his spot in a band that's taking off, what the changing sound of the band means for fans, how they react to those changes and how he copes with the shrinking opportunities for bands in the industry today. Chuck and Godless discuss the ballsy decision of Ne Obliviscaris' drummer Daniel Presland to quit a six-figure job to continue with the band and go on a world tour. Is this dude insane? Is he sacrificing stability and security for what is probably a futile pipe dream, or is he the gutsiest guy playing in a metal band today? Many bands we talk to have to be able to bridge music and day jobs to survive, but are they just selling their music short by telling us they they're not really good enough to quit their day job? My guest today is Tim Charles from Melbourne metal act Neobliviscaris. Tim is a music business entrepreneur who not only plays in his band, but also has his own entertainment company, and is a manager, booking agent and promoter. In my opinion the most interesting thing currently about Tim and his band is the fact that they have just smashed the Australian record for a crowd funding campaign- asking their fans to help them raise $40K to help them fund their world tour, and hitting just shy of $65K as of the production of this podcast. The really cool thing is that the campaign still has around 40 days to go so it’s going to be very interesting to see what their final figure ends at, and again, if you’d like to check them out and suss their campaign, all the details are in the show notes for this episode at www.musicbusinessfacts.com Anyhow I learnt a ton of stuff in this interview with Tim. He talks about the campaign from it’s inception through to the planning of rewards, marketing and launching. Tim’s a really articulate guy and this episode really is a master class on how to run a very successful cowd sourcing campaign. So wherever you are and what ever you’re doing- get your note pads and pens out and listen to Tim Charles- The man behind Australia’s most successful crowd sourcing campaign yet.
