Paul reflects on his own life, stating he has fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. He looks forward to the crown of righteousness that the Lord will award to all who long for His appearing. Paul closes with personal remarks, requesting companionship, providing updates on other believers, and affirming that the Lord stood by him, even when no one else did. Let us not measure success by applause, but by allegiance to You. Remind us that You are near, even when others leave. You are the one who equips, who defends, and who rewards. May we finish our race with joy, with our hearts set on Your return. People will become lovers of self, money, and pleasure rather than lovers of God. They will appear religious but will deny the true power of godliness. Sadly, they will progress from bad to worse. Paul urges Timothy to avoid such individuals, especially those who deceive others while resisting the truth. He reminds Timothy that persecution is a reality for all who desire to live godly lives in Christ Jesus. However, Timothy is encouraged to remain steadfast in what he has learned, holding firmly to the Scriptures that have shaped his faith since childhood. Paul affirms that all Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, correcting, and training in righteousness, equipping believers for every good work.  We live in a world that often values self above truth. Some hold to a form of godliness but are led by the adversary. We must remain alert to the attitudes and behaviors Paul warns against, guarding our hearts from pride, greed, and spiritual compromise. We are called to sincerely pursue godliness, even when it leads to hardship or opposition. The foundation for this life is the Word of God. Scripture is not just information; it is the voice of God shaping our minds and transforming our actions. We must hold tightly to what we have learned, remain rooted in truth, and let the Word train us to live with purpose, integrity, and a deep commitment to the way of Christ.  Holy Lord, in a world filled with confusion and pride, help us to stand firm in truth. Guard our hearts from the temptation to follow what is popular instead of what is right. Fill us with a deep love for Your Word, and give us wisdom to recognize what is false. Strengthen our faith when we face difficulty, and remind us that godliness is worth every cost. Help us learn to let Scripture shape our thoughts, guide our choices, and prepare us for every good work You have planned. May we reflect Christ in how we live, speak, and serve.   Thought Questions: How can people claim godliness but also be selfish and destructive? How do you avoid such a dangerous and tragic departure from Jesus? Is it true that “all who desire to live godly in Jesus Christ will be persecuted”? What persecution or sacrifice are you facing for your faith? How has the Scripture recently impacted your life? What are you learning? How are you being reproved and corrected? Is God training you?

He uses illustrations of a soldier, an athlete, and a farmer to highlight discipline, endurance, and hard work in ministry. Just as he does, Paul reminds Timothy to endure hardship for the gospel's sake. He emphasizes the importance of avoiding quarrels and ungodly talk, which only lead to more harm. Instead, he should study and learn the word of God. Timothy is instructed to pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, and to correct opponents with gentleness, in hopes that God may lead them to repentance. The chapter focuses on endurance, faithful teaching, and a life that reflects the saving mission of Jesus Christ.  The Christian life is filled with the grace of God; therefore, it must be marked by endurance, discipline, and devotion. We are called to share the truth with care, investing in others who will remain faithful to the message of Christ and share the word themselves. Like soldiers, athletes, and farmers, we must be willing to work diligently and stay focused on what truly matters. We must avoid arguments that distract from Christ and His eternal glory, and instead pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace. Build in us the quiet strength of a soldier, the discipline of an athlete, and the patience of a farmer. Let us not grow weary in teaching or in waiting. Help us to carry Your name with humility and to treat others with gentleness. Paul encourages Timothy to rekindle the spiritual gift God gave him and reminds him that the Spirit of God does not make believers timid but gives them power, love, and self-discipline. He urges Timothy not to be ashamed of the gospel or of Paul's suffering but to join in enduring hardship for the sake of Christ. Paul reminds him that God saved them by grace and called them to a holy life and to guard the standard of truth God has revealed. Paul expresses full confidence in Christ despite imprisonment, urging Timothy to guard the truth through the Holy Spirit who lives in them. This emotional letter from Paul to Timothy reminds us that our faith must be active and cultivated with intentional care. The sixty-six books of the Old and New Testament are the complete and divine revelation of God to Man. The Scriptures shall be interpreted according to their normal grammatical-historical meaning. We believe that God's Word has been divinely preserved in the English language and commonly known as the Authorized King James Version. Therefore, the Authorized King James Version shall be the official and only translation used by the church. (This podcast was previously recorded and published on October 10, 2020)   Jesus Ministries, Joan Boney  ...   Isaiah 3:9 The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves.   In WWII people committed many types of Biblical sins: adultery, fornication, drunkenness, homosexual, lesbian, and such, but they did these sins in secret.   To declare your sins openly without shame as we see today, is as the sin in Sodom for which God destroyed Sodom.   In Genesis 19:13, the angel discloses the following:  "For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it."   When their sins reach into heaven, God is aroused and takes action, judging those people who bring their sins to HIS attention.   Thus we see how God's judgment is hanging upon this present world where there is no shame for sin.   Time in the sight of God is described as follows: But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. (II Timothy 3:8)   The judgment of God is coming upon this world in the form of the great tribulation, the 14 plagues.   After that this present heaven and earth will be destroyed by God by fire.  (II Peter 3:10)   The righteous ones of God will be removed from this present earth and taken in their new spiritual bodies to the new heaven and the new earth wherein dwelleth righteousness.  (Revelation 21:1-5)   We will not have these earthly bodies in heaven.  (I Corinthians 15:49-52)  We will have spiritual bodies in heaven which are not subject to decay, pain, emotions.  We will be as the angels of God in heaven.    We live in a time where the sins are as the sins of Sodom, they are not hidden.  This is a prelude to the wrath of God that is coming upon this present world.   *****  Matthew 11:20   Then began HE (Jesus) to upbraid the cities wherein most of His mighty works were done, because they repented not:   Matthew 21:32   For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.   Revelation 9:20   And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:   Revelation 16:9  And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give Him glory.   Revelation 16:11  And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds. *** The terrible thing today is their lack of shame over that which they are doing.   So many women show no shame over becoming pregnant outside of marriage.   Homosexuals and lesbians often flaunt their sins before our eyes with no shame and no recognition at all that what they are doing is a sin in the sight of God.   Drunkards seek pity and often attribute their drunkenness to a medical problem instead of sin.   But the Bible shows us that drunkenness is sin:    I Corinthians 6   9  Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate (homosexual), nor abusers of themselves with mankind,   10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.   Galatians 5:19-21   19  Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,   21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.   ***   II Timothy 3   1  This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.   2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,   3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,   4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;   5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.   ***   The wrath of God judges the disobedient at the coming great tribulation:   Romans 1:18  For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;   Ephesians 6:5   Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.   Revelation 14:10   The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of His indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:   Revelation 16:1   And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.   The 14 plagues of the wrath of God will be poured out upon this earth during the great tribulation and after that this present heaven and earth will be destroyed by God with fire.  (II Peter 3:10-14)   This is coming.

(II Timothy 3:16-17; II Peter 1:20-21). We believe that man was created in the image and likeness of God, but that in Adam's sin the human race fell, inherited a sinful nature, and became alienated from God; and, that man is totally depraved, and of himself, utterly unable to remedy his lost condition (Genesis 1:26-27; Romans 3:22-23, 5:12, 6:23; Ephesians 2:1-3, 4:17-19). We believe that salvation is the gift of God brought to man by grace and received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, whose precious blood was shed on Calvary for the forgiveness of our sins (John 1:12; Ephesians 1:7, 2:8-10; I Peter 1:18-19).  We believe that all the redeemed, once saved, are kept by God's power and are thus secure in Christ forever (John 6:37-40; 10:27-30; Romans 8:1, 38-39; I Cor.1: 4-8; I Peter 1:4-5).We believe that it is the privilege of believers to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation through the testimony of God's Word, which, however clearly forbids the use of Christian liberty as an occasion to the flesh (Romans 13:13-14; Galatians 5:13; Titus 2:11-15).We believe in that “blessed hope,” the personal, imminent return of Christ who will rapture all believers prior to the seven-year tribulation period. At the end of the Tribulation, Christ will personally and visibly return with His saints, to establish His earthly Messianic Kingdom, which was promised to the nation of Israel (Psalm 89:3-4; Daniel 2:31-45; Zechariah 14:4-11; I Thessalonians 1:10, 4:13-18; Titus 2:13; Revelation 3:10, 19:11-16, 20:1-6).The Berean Baptist Church Statement of Faith does not exhaust the extent of our faith. We have known Paul's thoughts on Timothy long before II Timothy was written. They had a long and strong relationship - long and strong fellowship - long and strong mentorship. Listen to what Paul called Timothy in previous letters: called… “well spoken of” when Paul met him in Acts 16 “his helper” in Acts 19 “doer of the work of the Lord” - I Corinthians 16 “our brother” - Corinthians, Colossians, Thessalonians, Philemon, Hebrews “my beloved” again in I Corinthians “fellow worker” in Acts & Romans “faithful worker” in I Corinthians “servant of Christ” in Philippians “my true child” in I Timothy “bearer of good news” in I Thessalonians 3:6-7 Part of the new team - Paul, Silas, Timothy - in I & II Thessalonians The best word on Timothy is found in Philippians 2:19-24

• Saul - Hebrew name • Paul - Hellenistic name (Roman citizen). Went by Paul bc Gentiles were his major focus of ministry. Paul writes from a Roman prison to Timothy in Ephesus. Paul had been in prison several times but nothing like this. Sense of ambition vs Sense of Mission - The work was more important to Paul than his life. That's the difference between selfless leaders and selfish leaders. Paul's attitude in chapter 4 is based on a heavenly hope not earthly resentment. Acts 20:17-38: Tearful farewell saying goodbye to the elders in Ephesus. They knew Paul was heading into dangerous places. II Timothy 4:6-8: But this is different. Paul knows he won't be long for this earth. His life is being poured out! Introduction: “How does it end?” That's the question I usually ask my wife when she suggests watching something together. I want to know. It doesn't ruin it for me. I want a happy ending. I'm depressed enough living in a fallen world without the help of Hollywood. God must want us to know how things are going to bc He tells us in His Word. We learn that no human lives forever on the earth. We learn that Jesus is preparing a place for us after we die. Jesus spoke about how things will end on earth with vivid details in Matthew 24 & 25 (The Olivet Discourse). And last but not least, God gave us the Book of Revelation the greatest details on how it all ends on the earth). This letter is raw and powerful. It is personal but not chummy. This letter contains 25 imperatives. Paul is commanding Timothy is many critical areas. I. There are four chapters (each has its own theme) 1. Chapter One - Fanning the flame 2. Chapter Two - Training the pastors 3. Chapter Three - Relying on Scriptures 4. Chapter Four - Finishing Well II. The II Timothy Overview Chart - 1. The Past - Timothy's heritage 2. The Present - Passing it on 3. The Future (2-fold) a. The Deception of the World b. The Devotion of the Disciples III. The Personal Opening - 1:1-5 (Authority w/ affection & affirmation) - God used Paul to prepare Timothy before his death in a similar manner that God prepared Joshua after Moses death. Every organization has as its goal passing on the leadership to the next generation. Few have accomplished this for any length of time. My father's company GM is not the giant it used to be in the automobile industry. My father-in-law's company, Sears dominated the market for over a hundred years but has since fallen on hard times. Christianity on the other hand has endured for over 2,000 years. Why? Two reasons: (1) God is the eternal CEO of His work (2) God's work is an organism rather than an organization. 1. Paul was Timothy's spiritual father and this is no “gonna miss you” letter. It's a call to courage. It's a call to leadership. It's a call to preaching in a world where antagonism was on an all-time high. The enemies of the cross expanded far beyond the JRE and now coming from the Roman Empire itself. This changed everything. Paul went from “house arrest” in his first Roman imprisonment and now he is bound in chains, cold and alone, knowing he would not survive this incarceration. = 1:1 - Paul the author speaks first with authority then with affection= 1:2a - Timothy the recipient = 1:2b - Paul ended Titus w/ “love, faith, grace” and opens II Timothy w/ “grace, mercy, & peace”= 1:3-4 - Paul opens with being thankful, prayerful, tearful, hopeful, joyful (and calls adds the title of “servant”) ● As did my ancestors/forefathers” - Paul was not the first to walk faithfully with God and he will not be the last! Many endured incredible persecution and pain. ● “with a clear conscience” - I Timothy 1; II Timothy 3:9; “remember you constantly in my prayers (couldn't stop there but instead he defines constantly) “night and day” ● “I remember your tears” - ● “I long to see you” -

3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 3:17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. 4:1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. 4:5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

2:8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel: 2:9 Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound. 2:10 Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 2:11 It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him: 2:12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us: 2:13 If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself. 2:14 Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers. 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2:16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. 2:17 And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; 2:18 Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some. 2:19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. 2:20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. 2:21 If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work. 2:22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 2:23 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. 2:24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, 2:25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; 2:26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

There is amazing brevity & clarity given the challenges in Crete! MAP Complex issues yet no long book is written - no second book is written (like Timothy). Final comments are aimed at RELATIONSHIPS — The challenges & The celebrationsThe damage of division is the distraction to discipleship! The Great Commission is the evangelistic pillar of the church. Division distracts from TRUTH from GRACE from LOVE as well! Remember that Timothy and Titus are more than Leadership Books (Pastoral Epistles). They are getting back to discipleship books, too! This is why the deceiver sows the discord of division. • Jesus - John 7:34; 9:16; 10:19 • Matthew 7:1-5 (see the sin in others) - legalism; lacking truth or lacking grace• What division is and what division isn't - Disagreeing is not division - Philippians 4:1-3 • A Corinthian Concern (not just a problem in Crete) - I Cor. 1:10-18; 3:1-9; 11:17-22; Romans 16:17-20; II Thess 3:14-15; II Timothy 2:24-26; III John 9-10; Jude 17-19 I.
