Beginning this year, new federal regulations take effect that require companies to transmit accurate location information with each 911 call originating from company premises, and next year the requirements become more stringent. Federal and state E911 rules and regulations are intended to make it easier for users to reach 911 and for first responders to receive accurate location information. Listen to this 11 minute podcast as Andrew Brown, the Managing Partner at LB3 and Chairman of TC2, explains to Joe Schmidt why complying with E911 isn’t something companies can put off and offers advice on what to do now.
UC Today's Rob Scott hosts Mary A. Boyd, VP, Regulatory Policy and External Affairs at Intrado and Lev Deich, VP, Delivery and Operations at Intrado.
Recorded during SkySwitch Vectors 2019 this podcast discusses the issues and solutions for contacting emergency services. A roundtable podcast discussing E911, Kari's Law and location service issues with members of the emergency services and SkySwitch.
At the packed Aug1st Open Meeting, E911 took center stage as Karti's Law and the Ray Baum Act §506 were discussed and voted on, as mandated by Congress, Fletch sits down with Chairman Ajit Pai and Hank Hunt for the REAL INSIDE story.
Whenever I asked NENA's CEO Brian Fontes to sit down for five minutes for podcast it is not unusual for us to record a discussion lasting 30 minutes or more. Did you get the Presidential Alert text? Some people on the left were really upset by that. There's even a lawsuit against the White House over it. If you've listened to this show you know I'm not a fan of the President, but I actually thought this was a good idea. Radio and traditional TV have been replaced by streaming services and podcasts so the most effective way of getting out a message these days is through our devices. So I didn't really get the outrage until I read some Tweets by John Mcafee. The "Presidential alerts": they are capable of accessing the E911 chip in your phones – giving them full access to your location, microphone, camera and every function of your phone. This not a rant, this is from me, still one of the leading cybersecurity experts. 911 call takers across the United States answer an exorbitant amount of calls for assistance. While the bulk majority of these are real and life threatening emergencies, there are the nonemergency calls that are made out of poor judgment, or the lack of understanding of what an emergency number is really designed for. On top of this, a very small percentage are what are known as "Frequent Flyers". They get this nickname, not for being regular travelers in the friendly skies, but for constantly using, and in many cases abusing, local 911 emergency services.

An effective E-911 implementation doesn't just happen; it takes a solid strategy. Tune in for tips from IT expert Irwin Lazar, of Nemertes Research.
iOS 11 added a new SOS emergency feature designed to give you a new discrete way to call 911, and let your emergency contacts know that you called. IT DOES NOT notify 911 operators of what your location is, despite misquoted reviews on the inter-web's. Be sure to catch this real story on what this feature does, and doesn't do.
What was reported to be a life saving 911 gift for Christmas has been exposed by a Northern Michigan PSAP as one that does not work and may actually DELAY services from reaching you. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true - it likely ISN'T as found out with this popular 911 Emergency Pendant sold on some Television Shopping Networks.
It doesn't matter what the data is if garbage is going in; Then the result that's coming out will also be garbage. In public safety, emergency call takersMust rely on their got feelings.Would it be great if they could rely on real informationLike picturesAnd other forms of multimedia?
Ask anyone in public safety and they will tell you that the most critical information, yet often the most elusive, is the location of the caller. Not only is the location accuracy grossly inadequate with most mobile devices today, often a caller is unaware of what their "dispatchable address" is. Not only do public safety dispatchers rely on the technology in the network to route the call correctly, but the inability of that technology to give them a discreet location puts the onus on the caller to be able to convey that information to the 911 call taker.
Should I text? Should I call? Calling is clearly better, but do PSAPs have to evolve with the way people communicate? ADDED BONUS: @ShannaJackman is a singer/songwriter from New England, but also mans the console at a PSAP on nights. Check out her new hit single "Answer The Call" right here, and maybe an interview in the coming weeks.
During the recent hurricanes in Texas and Florida, public safety officials reported very few people usingText to 911 for emergencies. Instead, social media was flooded, but public safety agencies weren't ready for the influx of those messages. Was this a Social Media fluke? Or, a telltale sign for the future? Check out Fletch's opinion on this episode of E911 Talk.
With any innovation, comes the opportunity for additional technology. At times, the technology is a welcome addition, while at other times it’s merely an opportunity for marketing. 911 solutions could cost you significant money unless you understand how they operate. Save 10's of thousand on your solution each year. The bigger you are, the more you save,

Conveyant Systems, a leading supplier of Emergency Response Management Solutions and PC-based Attendant Consoles, today announced that its Sentry E911 solution is compliant with key team engagement solutions from Avaya, a global provider of business communications software, systems and services.
In this informative podcast with Jason Forehand from RedSky, we discuss e911 (Enhanced 911) and how the evolving communications landscape is impacting the ability of businesses to deliver accurate 911 services to their employees. We dig into the regulatory and legislative arena and what businesses need to know about existing and potential regulations for companies (for example, 18 states already mandate e911) and how municipalities are working to keep their 911 systems current and able to take advantage of modern mobile technology. We also discuss how mega-trends in business communications like SIP trunking, Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS), mobility and remote working are impacting how businesses need to think about e911. If your business is scaling, you are planning on updating your communications platform or your state is adopting new legislation, this podcast is worth the listen.

What solution do I recommend for E911? Easy - The one that you need to solve your particular solution. Here are some things that are on my checklist and why I always start my remediation activities with a detailed analysis.

The MLTS E911 remediation project continues with part 3
Part 2 of our Enterprise E911 remediation project
Join us as we go through the implementation of E911 in our Enterprise.
NENA i3 is a radical departure from the legacy model of Public Safety communications. With this paradigm shift in technology comes a shift in revenues, and a lot of 'muscle flexing' took place the ultimately delayed the adoption and implementation of NG911.
Here are the comments AVAYA submitted to Michigan on their initial attempt to legislate E911 for MLTS / ECS. Much of what we suggested the PUC back in 2011 has yet to be deployed. Best practices are best practices.
What is SWATting? How does it impact Public Safety? Fletch covers the details of this menacing problem that is becoming more popular with hackers today looking to create DDoS and TDoS attacks on our nations Emergency Services Network.
Fletch calculates that BILLIONS are being collected for E911, but where is the money going? New NG911 carriers are disrupting the financial model of Public Safety. Let the political fights start.
Fletch talks about additional E911 laws in the US - Back then - only 16 States had any legislation, and it was a mash-up with little consistency. Fortunately today things are better, especially after Kari's Law started making the rounds with some consistency.
Join us each week for Coffee with Andrew and Rob, the official podcast of Coffee with Rob. Every show will involve casual conversation between myself, my good friend, Andrew Amat, and guests as we tackle opinions on the news featured here on the blog. Please join us for one hour of round table discussion. Would you like to ask a question or have your opinions mentioned on air? Email theshow@coffeewithrob.netLate again! I need to apologize once again for not meeting schedule but hopefully we'll be back on track starting next week. Unfortunately, this time of year is pretty busy for me and it seems that with the entire network, I've bitten off way more than I can chew. Regardless, we do have a show for you and here it is!First topic got off underway pretty quickly. We spoke for a pretty long time about how much longer we had until there was no more physical media or entertainment. Went on a huge tangent about video games, specifically Steam and Gamestop and I even went as far as to allude that Gamestop's days were numbered. After the break we spoke a bit about Minecraft and how incredibly addicting the game is. Andrew told us a bit about what he was working on there which sounds pretty ambitious. After that we spoke about the current education situation here in the United States and concluded that it was in a pretty bad state.Music used: Cold Funk by Kevin MacLeod as the outro and intermission.Get the podcast:[iTunes] Subscribe to the show on iTunes[BlackBerry Podcasts] Search for us on the BlackBerry Podcast app for BlackBerry smartphones[RSS] Subscribe to the show via RSS[MP3] Download the MP3 and listen on any playerOr listen here on the page:Stories covered this week:How long until all things are distributed via Internet?Education in the US is pretty bad.
Avaya's Product Line Manager for Emergency Services, Mark J. Fletcher, ENP, exposes the top 10 E911 myths and highlights a special announcement for WLAN
Avaya's Product Line Manager for Emergency Services, Mark J. Fletcher, ENP, details SIP based carriers for E911 and their use of VPC services to position users in remote areas.
How does your E911 call get to the right PSAP? The Selective Router is an important part of the E911 infrastructure that interconnects the Public PSTN to the Private E911 networks that exist across the country. Understanding the mechanics behind how these COs switch your 911 calls is a critical piece of the puzzle.
The world of E911 is filled with acronyms like ERL, ELIN, ANI and ALI, but just what do these things mean? More importantly, do I need to understand them all? Listen in while Fletch goes over the important ones that will allow you to have an intelligent conversation and help you from overbuying on a solution by understanding what you actually need.
Often enterprise administrators are tempted to terminate 911 calls internally at a designated extension. You may think you are doing the caller a favor, but in reality you may be delaying critical help. Before you establish a Private Emergency Answer Point or PEAP, understand the liability and single point of failure you may be creating,
What you need to know about E911 callbacks. What are they? How do I configure them? What about non-DID numbers? Should they go back to the caller? There are a lot of reasons to map these to a centralized emergency desk like security. Will the caller even be there in an emergency? Where ever they terminate, make sure they are answered.
VPCs are required, in many cases, to connect with the disparate E911 networks. What do you need to to understand about these services? And most importantly, what is the cost? While a lot of similarity in services exists, this can also create a confusing environment.
On-site notification is an important part of any solution. Fortunately, it is part of the core functionality of all platforms from Avaya and enhanced by DevConnect solutions like the SENTRY™ and SENTRYLite™ from Conveyant Systems, Inc. Understanding that an emergency has occurred in any building is table stakes in any solution and provides the granularity of where the event occurred so internal responders can assist if possible.
Understanding what you are buying BEFORE you purchase is critical for almost anything you buy. So why would you make a purchase decision for an E911 for your enterprise without doing some research? Everyone will tell you they are the best, everyone will tell you they are the most effective, but they have told you this BEFORE they even understand your need, or make sure YOU understand your needs. This is where a pro services enagement will likely save you 3 to 4 times the cost of the engagement in savings.
Avaya selects WLAN location tracking and reporting functionality, produced by Conveyant Systems, Inc., and has added associated software entitlement into the WLAN 8100 controller completely FREE to the end user.
