Why 911 Compliance Isn't Just a Checkbox—It's a Safety Strategy, Communications Advantage Podcast

Enterprise Connect 2025 Podcast | Technology Reseller News Previously LIVE from Enterprise Connect 2025 “If you're relying on mobile triangulation, your 911 location could be half a mile off—meanwhile, your DoorDash order is on the doorstep,” says Robert Harris, President of Communications Advantage. Speaking at Enterprise Connect 2025, Harris and Melinda Sensabaugh, ENP, joined Doug Green to discuss the realities of enterprise 911 compliance—and why Next Generation 911 (NG911) is far more than a telecom upgrade. Sensabaugh, a certified Emergency Numbering Professional (ENP) and longtime consultant in public safety communications, outlined how legacy analog systems and selective routers limit the information public safety can receive. “Today's 911 still runs on technology designed for landlines,” said Sensabaugh. “NextGen 911 will run over IP networks, delivering location, device, video, even floor plans—getting the right information to the right PSAP faster.” For enterprises, complying with Kari's Law and the RAY BAUM's Act is more complex than just updating a phone system. Harris emphasized that ambiguous terms like “to the extent technically feasible” require interpretation. “Enterprises need expert help to translate regulatory language into action—whether that means mapping every wired port or accounting for Wi-Fi mobility,” he said. Both Sensabaugh and Harris have built their consulting practice around a holistic approach to 911—helping enterprises assess and update not just their phone systems, but their policies, safety planning, and PSAP (Public Safety Answering Point) readiness. Their work includes consulting on legacy upgrades, educating IT and safety teams, and advocating for proactive compliance before tragedies expose gaps. “The bottom line,” said Sensabaugh, “is that 911 isn't just about technology. It's about protecting your employees and knowing that when they dial, help gets to the right place—fast.” To learn more, visit communicationsadvantage.com, or connect with Robert Lee Harris on LinkedIn. He also offers a white paper on integrating 911 compliance as a core worker safety discipline.

How To Call 911 For Someone Living In Another State

Emergency numbers are the kind of thing you may not fully appreciate until you need them.    —Melissa Batchelor, PhD, RN, FNP, FGSA, FAAN Would you know how to contact 911 for a loved one who lives in a different state?    Many people assume that if you call 911 in your local area that they would be able to connect you to the municipality that your loved one lives in – but that's not always the case.    Join me for this week's episode where Rebecca Murphy from Maryland shares her story of Facetiming her Dad in Florida – and he fell through the attic to the concrete garage floor below and was severely injured.    She shares her harrowing account of events and offers tips to help you make sure you never end up in this kind of panic. You can be prepared. So stay tuned to learn how to call 911 for someone living in another state and other technology solutions for connecting to emergency services.   Now let's dive into this week's episode ▶️ How To Call 911 For Someone Living In Another State   Main Point #1: Tell us about what happened that led you to need to call 911 in another state?    Rebecca was on FaceTime with her dad when she faced a nerve-racking situation. Initially trying to fix something in the attic, she suddenly heard her dad's screams as he fell 12 to 15 feet onto the concrete in the garage. Helpless, she realized she didn't even have his address. Here comes the first lesson – always make sure you know the addresses of your loved ones. After reaching out to other family members, she decided to contact the nearest EMS for assistance.  Main Point #2: What happened when you tried to call 911? Rebecca received instructions to dial 911 in Maryland, but when she did, they were unable to forward the call to authorities in Florida. Instead, they provided her with a phone number for a different city. What should have been a quick five-minute process turned into a frustrating 45-minute ordeal. Rebecca had to call numerous municipal offices all across Florida just to inform them that someone needed to help her dad.  It's truly a distressing situation that no one should ever have to go through, and it could have been avoided with a little bit of prior planning and preparation.   Main Point #3: Recommendations for people to avoid spending all that time figuring it out   Prepare Ahead of Time Know their address Understand what emergency entity will respond – city vs. county Add the PSAP for your loved one in your phone contacts – Public Safety Answering Point Encourage elected officials to include the PSAP number – File of Life program Technology solutions: Apple Watch that automatically calls 911 with fall setting + cellular connection; can call for yourself with watch on. Fall Risk: Logs can help monitor if you have changes in coordination, gait stability and gait speed. #emergencyplan #emergency #dispatch #careteam #healthcare #communityeffort #caremanagement #caregiver #alzheimersupport #alzheimer #alzheimersawareness #alzheimers #dementia ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About MelissaBPhD   Melissa Batchelor, PhD, RN, FNP, FGSA, FAAN. This episode of EMS One-Stop With Rob Lawrence is brought to you by Lexipol, the experts in policy, training, wellness support and grants assistance for first responders and government leaders. To learn more, visit lexipol.com. The American Ambulance Association recently held its annual AAA Stars of Life event in Washington, D.C. The American Ambulance Association's Stars of Life program celebrates the contributions of ambulance professionals who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in service to their communities or the EMS profession. While in Washington, EMS One-Stop Host Rob Lawrence interviewed AAA President Randy Strozyk, on the aims and objectives of the stars program and the 2023 Legislator of the Year. Rob also spoke with AAA Medical Director Dr. Gerad Troutman, who is AAA's first medical director. Finally, Rob chats with AAA Immediate Past President, Shawn Baird, on the Federal Balanced Billing legislation and the role that AAA and others are playing in protecting both the patient and EMS agencies. Top quotes from this episode “Every provider is out to make a difference, but to actually be recognized for it, which you don't often get the opportunity to have, makes it that much more of an honor to be selected for something like this” — Paramedic Erica Brockman “AAA stars and hundreds of thousands of people like you are the beginning of the healing process. When somebody is hurt, somebody is wounded, somebody is scared, it is the EMT that first touches that patient and then begins to transport into the healthcare system when the rest of the healthcare system can then kick in to what it does, but it would not start unless it begins with you.” — Senator Bill Cassidy “Think about when Covid hit, at 0200 in the morning, we were the ones that came, we were the ones that had to deal with a whole new level of challenges, not only Covid, but we had to deal with the fact that people didn't want to go to the hospital, so we were providing levels of care, interfacing, making sure that people had connections. I see that as a bright future to how EMS will progress in the next decade” — AAA President Rany Strozyk “I'm really passionate about patients called 911 looking for solutions to a problem and that solution is not always an ambulance to take them to an emergency department, so we try to impact their care differently, especially lower acuity patients, because we now have all the technology and tools to treat them in place with our paramedics or EMTs on site of even treating them utilizing a navigation program from the 911 system, the PSAP and maybe get them to an urgent care or virtual care doctor, where they can be cared for right in their home. Patients love it and the best thing is it really puts the ‘E' back in EMS and allows us to save those emergent resources that need those most.” — Dr. Gerad Troutman, AAA medical director “We will be coming back to Congress with a recommendation that ground ambulance not be rolled into the No Surprises Act. That (if we were included) would be devastating to access for care.” — Shawn Baird, immediate past president, AAA Episode contents 00:21 – Opening: Erica Brockman 01:02 – Introduction: Rob Lawrence 01:36 – Randy Strozyk, president, American Ambulance Association 05:12 – Key areas of legislation for 2023/24 08:07 – Presentation of Legislator of the Year: Senator Bill Cassidy 11:00 – Dr. Gerad Troutman, AAA medical director 17:00 – Federal Balanced Billing Committee: Shawn Baird 18:35 – Summary and close Additional resources  The full bios for all of the AAA Class of 2023 Stars of Life can be found here. In the United States, when someone calls 911 the call is routed to an operator at a public safety answering point, or PSAP. But news outlets across the country are finding that local PSAPs are struggling, and that 911 callers are waiting longer to get help. Today on the podcast, we speak to a researcher who just surveyed dozens of PSAPs to find out how well they are able to meet the call answering and processing times required by NFPA standards (2:44). The results were eye-opening.  Then, on a new Code Corner, with construction season in full swing, engineer Shawn Mahoney talks about the role of the fire prevention program manager on construction sites (31:08). The long offseason is nearly over, spring training baseball begins tomorrow, and Kunj and Andrew will be regularly podcasting again in short order! In addition to there being a dearth of baseball news, we've been traveling a lot over the past couple months, so there hasn't been a good time to get back together, but hey, we're here now. As we discuss in the show, there will be a change in programming for 2023. Ours was one of many, many podcasts to get axed by SB Nation in their January layoffs. Soon, they will no longer be supporting it, and that's a giant bummer. (To answer the obvious follow-up: No, there are no changes to the website and all operations are go for the coming season.) We do have a plan to keep podcasting this year though! We can't reveal all the specifics just yet, but the show will go on. The only catch with SBN though is that we have to change our name since Pinstripe Alley and SBN will not technically be connected to the podcast anymore. So say hello to Podument Park! In our final PSAP episode/beta Pod Park episode, we welcome the Yankees back with a look at early spring training storylines, like Frankie Montas needing shoulder surgery, Nestor Cortes being a bit of an Opening Day roster question mark due to his hamstring, the left field and shortstop questions, and our excitement for the World Baseball Classic. There is still baseball to discuss; we're only a little navel-gazey at the outset! (Skip to around the four-minute mark if you'd rather just hear Yankees talk.) It's a little strange to no longer be recording under the PSAP umbrella, but we go onward and upward, and as long as the energy is there to discuss the highs and lows of modern Yankees baseball, we will keep on keeping on. Thank you for tuning in and we hope that you stay with us! We're working on getting the RSS feed moved over so that you won't need to subscribe to anything new. Learn more about your ad choices.
