Social engineering continues to be the primary gateway for cyberattacks, responsible for nearly 80% of fraud and ransomware incidents. And notably, 1 in 4 of these social engineering attacks originate via phone calls. Yet many enterprises continue to leave their phone systems exposed. In this episode, Dr. Dave Chatterjee engages Richard Quattrocchi, Vice President of Digital Transformation, Mutare Inc., in a compelling discussion on the often-overlooked threat of voice-based cyberattacks, particularly vishing (voice phishing). Richard shares his professional journey, personal motivation rooted in a family scam incident, and the alarming rise of social engineering via phone calls—especially in the era of AI and deepfakes. The conversation underscores how organizations continue to leave phone systems vulnerable due to siloed ownership and outdated assumptions.Richard presents a layered defense strategy combining people, process, and technology, and introduces Mutare's voice traffic filtering solution. This technology proactively intercepts malicious calls using metadata analysis before they reach users, drastically reducing exposure to fraud. The discussion also dives into real-world cases, including the MGM breach, and offers actionable guidance for enterprises and individuals to better secure voice channels. To access and download the entire podcast summary with discussion highlights -- https://www.dchatte.com/episode-84-stopping-social-engineered-vishing-attacks-before-they-start/Connect with Host Dr. Dave Chatterjee and Subscribe to the PodcastPlease subscribe to the podcast so you don't miss any new episodes! The Voice Traffic Filter acts as a firewall for the voice channel, eliminating nuisance and nefarious calls at the beginning of the contact center's call flow. Utilizing proprietary voice data analysis capabilities built into five distinct layers of filtering technologies, VTF detects and removes all forms of spam, scam, spoofed, and otherwise unwanted calls before they enter the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system... and you can see a demo of this at the upcoming Cloud Connections 2024. Cybersecurity attacks, It's always the humans, It's always the people. “The catalyst for all this was a voice, call,” says Chuck French of Mutare. “It was a phone call from someone into the IT department, that allowed the bad actors to put their software in, to take control of MGM.” Recorded on the tenth day of the attack on MGM, this podcast explores how one of the best prepared organizations, experienced a widespread cyberattack that impacted the casino giant at multiple properties, disabled online reservations, use of parts of the company's app, electronic access to rooms and even impacted machines on the casino floor. As of September 20, Reuters was reporting that MGM had recovered operations, but as of the evening of September 21, the website was still directing guests to call an 800 number for reservations. French outlines the level of sophistication that these attackers have: initial access brokers who sell access, another group harvests the information, quietly infiltrating the organization, moving laterally, allowing their invasive software to become part of the backup and so on. After the silent invasion has already occurred comes the actual attack. The attack begins with a ransom message. In this case, very possibly, a decision to decline that ransom payment, or possibly ignoring the stated threat, comes the visible attack. “These are large, large organizations. The have HR. They have health care plans,” French notes, speaking about the corporate-like nature of the bad actors. “It's always humans,” notes French on the social engineering part of the attack. Voice, the one part of any IT operation that involves human to human communication, introduces a soft target, where human judgement, and misjudgment, can be exploited. Research, creating a sense of urgency, the bad actors know how to push the buttons n people who might make a security mistake. French outlines a plan people can perform immediately to get on a safer footing. French outlines ideas on how to step-up security and how Mutare can help companies. Mutare offers deep resources and research materials for people who want to go deeper on this topic. The Mutare Voice Traffic Filter (VTF) is enterprise-class software built to provide multiple layers of protection against unwanted traffic. VTF creates a barrier at the network edge, ensuring that malicious and nefarious traffic does not gain access to your network.
Vishing, short for "voice phishing," is on the rise again. But then, it's been rising almost exponentially for the past two years. Last summer various organizations were reporting anywhere between 500-650 percent increases over the previous six quarters. Now, as US citizens prepare their tax returns, the scam is getting another bump. We had a chat with Brian McDonald, director of product development and Mutare, about their technology and the problem of vishing. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/crucialtech/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/crucialtech/support

Zimbabwe Mount Nyangani is the highest mountain in Zimbabwe at feet. The mountain is located within Nyanga National Park in Nyanga District, about 110 km northwest of Mutare. The summit lies atop a small outcrop of rock around 40 metres or 130 feet above the surrounding area. Mount Nyangani is a sacred place and inhabited by the spirits of their ancestors it is also said to be inhabited by spirits and supernatural beings.Locals and tourists when going to Mount Nyangani all report that they have experienced strange phenomena -Phones go missing -Photos will not display correctly -The weather turns strange and unpredictable -thick fog appeared anywhere around the pedestrians as if it was stalking them. Missing cases Most recent Zayd Dada (31 years old), a Zimbabwean tourist of Indian origin. In the early morning of January 4, 2014 Dada went up the mountain with his wife and another couple and since then no one has seen him. Similarly, a 20-year-old British tourist named Thomas Gaisford disappeared while exploring Mount Nyanaga in November 2014. Thomas Gaisford himself reached the top of Mount Nyanga, however, around 3pm, Gaisford saw a thick fog descending on the mountain and seemed to want to engulf him. I prayed and slept for about 10 hours. Some scary snakes approached me. I didn't do anything to irritate them. I also saw bloodshot eyes staring at me. The 'guests' wanted to measure my nerves. I'm still confident I can handle it. The next day when the fog cleared, I woke up and climbed down the mountain'. Most local tribes often tell stories of angry wandering spirits, 'forbidden zones' where souls are confined. The tribal elders have long warned that the mountain's rules must be followed, not to anger the spirits guarding the sanctuary. “The problem with STIR/SHAKEN is that it's not a mature technology… just yet” says Richard Quattrocchi of Mutare. “It was originally designed with the hope of stopping robocalls, but it really doesn't do that. On its own…” Quattrocchi adds. In this podcast we learn that STIR/SHAKEN needs to be used with other layers of protection to achieve the desired impact of decreasing the amount of unwanted automatic calling. Quattrocchi discusses the Mutare approach which serves five layers of protection. We also see a dashboard that pulls together, graphically, the volume and timing of unwanted calls. “The smaller the business, the larger the volume, proportionally, of unwanted calls,” leaving smaller businesses overwhelmed and frustrated. Mutare looks at blocking nefarious calls, which are malevolent, which can include criminal level attempts to commit fraud, along with nuisance calls, which can become disruptive. Visit www.mutare.com
Our family made our entry into Zimbabwe at the end of March this year, and we were accompanied by the Cody Rich family, also from our home church back in Tennessee. I've referenced Bro. Cody a few times in describing my call and deployment to this land because our stories have been providentially intertwined over the past few years in relation to African missions. Bro. Cody and his family spent twelve weeks with us here in Mutare, Zimbabwe before returning to the states to commence their deputation travels in view of returning to Zimbabwe to labor along side us. Before Cody and his family headed back to the states we took some time to talk over how the Lord put missions in his heart as a young man and how Cody's heart for missions intersected with mine at Cornerstone Baptist Church. This conversation is a more personal, less formal interview than usual. I hope you will rejoice with us and pray for us as we rehearse what the Lord has done and is doing to get the gospel here to Zimbabwe. This is the first segment of a two-part interview with Cody Rich on our Missionary Partnership to Zimbabwe. Your feedback is welcome. You can reach Bro. Lee by email at greatcommissionconversations@gmail.com.

Each week we sit down with a guest to discuss Mission and Evangelism in Scotland and beyond. Our guests this week are Steve and Anna Griffiths. Born in Mutare, Zimbabwe, Steve trained as a doctor. He met his English wife Anna in Harare (who came on holiday to Zim and never went home!) After learning Portuguese in Coimbra, Portugal, Steve & Anna served in northern Mozambique in medical and church work. They then joined OMF, learning the Khmer language and working in Cambodia where Steve was a technical advisor to the leprosy programme of the Cambodian Ministry of Health. Asked to move to OMF Headquarters in Singapore, Steve & Anna shared the role of Director for Personnel based in Singapore for the last twelve years. They have two children Joshua and Aimée, both in medical school at present. Steve and Anna moved to São Paulo in Brazil – and are busy getting the rust off their Portuguese. -- The Axe and the Tree: https://www.10ofthose.com/uk/authors/... -- #christian #church #mission #evangelism #podcast #scotland #christianity #freechurchofscotland #fcos #gospel -- Check out our site for more info: https://generation-mission.org Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GenerationMi... Acclaimed dancer-choreographer Nora Chipaumire--recipient of a 2007 New York Dance and Performance ("Bessie") Award--joins me to discuss her vision and mission as a Zimbabwe-born contemporary dance artist of Shona heritage. She previews her April 30-May 1 solo season at Dance Theater Workshop. BIO Nora Chipaumire was born in Mutare, Zimbabwe during the Chimurenga Chechipiri, or second war of liberation. A self-exiled artist now based in New York, she investigates the collaborative process within cultural, political, economic, and technological identities of African contemporary life. Her work is transnational, unafraid, and eager to burn cultural, creative, and geographic boundaries. She creates provocative and politically relevant multimedia dance work, illuminating the struggles of human identity in an increasingly borderless world. Her work is inspired by art from her native country such as shona sculpture and chimurenga music--art that results from the often violent convergence of rural, urban, African, non-African, cultural, economic, colonial, and technological ideas. A visionary African contemporary dance artist, her work speaks to the human condition with power, authority, and urgency. Nora Chipaumire is a recipient of a 2007 New York Dance and Performance (aka "Bessie") Award. She is also a Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography (MANCC) 2007-08 Choreographic Fellow. She is a recipient of National Dance Project (NDP) Tour Support in 2007-08. She also received a Jerome Travel and Study Grant to participate in the JANT-BI Diaspora Project in Toubab Dialaw, Senegal in May and August 2007. Nora was honored with the Mariam McGlone Emerging Choreographer Award from Wesleyan University Center for the Arts on March 10, 2007. She is featured in the documentary "Movement (R)evolution" and is the subject of the documentary-in-progress, "Nora Chipaumire: A Physical Biography," directed by Alla Kovgan and David Hinton, supported by a 2007 EMPAC DANCE MOViES Commission. A graduate of the law school of the University of Zimbabwe, Chipaumire received her MA in Dance and MFA in Choreography and Performance from Mills College in Oakland, CA. She has shown her work widely and danced with a variety companies in the US and abroad. Most notably, she is a member of Jawole Willa Jo Zollar's world-renowned Urban Bush Women. UPCOMING EVENTS "Chimurenga" at Dance Theater Workshop, April 30-May 3 (7:30pm).
