Continuing their conversations about films featuring Best Supporting Acting Oscar winning performances, Madeline, Julian and Emilio dive into a film they had yet to see: 'Dreamgirls', the 2006 film adaptation of the Broadway musical, starring Jamie Foxx, Beyonce, Anika Noni Rose, Danny Glover, and Jennifer Hudson, whose portrayal of Effie White earned her an Academy Award in her film debut.  The group gets into its status as a "film a clef" with many references to Motown history and associated artists, the unstable foundation (narratively speaking) upon which "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" sits, as well as that song's undeniable power.  They dig into the 2007 Oscars win (and snub) that is a huge part of this film's legacy, Beyonce's irrepressible voice, the distracting brief appearance of John Krasinski (looking way too much like Jim Halpert), other possible directors who could have brought this musical to the screen, and so much more!  If you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice.  This really helps us find new listeners and grow!Follow us on IG and TikTok (yes, it's apparently still a thing): @sleeplesscinematicpodSend us an email at sleeplesscinematicpod@gmail.comOn Letterboxd? We Regret To Inform You: The Rejection Podcast

Last week, we told the story of EGOT winner Jennifer Hudson. Hudson put the O in EGOT when she won the Oscar for her role as Effie White in Dreamgirls. It's said Dreamgirls is based on the story of The Supremes – Deena as Diana Ross, Effie as Florence Ballard. And in researching that episode, we discovered it wasn't just Jennifer Hudson who had a rejection story – The Supremes had a fascinating journey of their own. So, join us this week as we discover how the glamour girls of Motown went from the “No-Hit Supremes” to the female group with the most #1 songs in history on the Billboard Hot 100.Get to know Apostrophe:InstagramTwitterThreadsYouTube Hosted on Acast. Speaking of content, we briefly touch on Bravo's Chat Room and how the hosts mesh. Then we hop onto memory lane and talk the movie Dream Girls and Zack names the former housewife couple that is Effie White personified and the current housewife who is the real life version of the Dream Girls soundtrack song, Listen. After which, we throw our Zoom kiki in reverse and go a little further in the past where Zack shares how he was bullied for being Jewish and how his school administration essentially faulted him and I share the first time I felt the difference of my skin color, in a non positive way. We decide to lighten the mood and we talk RHOA and the peach cobbler (a plastic shield and a tongue), the RHOA housewife that is heard but not seen, RHOA and Monique and Candiace (they brought me and Zack together in the DM's), the RHOP reunion and what could be Gizelle AKA Gizzy's reckoning and the importance of using your voice to go and vote (this episode was supposed to be out election day but due to tech issues was a day behind-so we hope you voted!)This episode will make you LOL and say bravooOMG! Dreamgirls won two Academy Awards - one for Best Sound Mixing, the other, Best Supporting Actress for Jennifer Hudson's star-making portrayal of Effie White. The single disc-version of the soundtrack spent two weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200 and was nominated for the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album. One of the songs, "Love You I Do" won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture or Television. The soundtrack, a certified banger, and Tre'vell's personal heat rock, was certified platinum. A fan of Jennifer Hudson's since American Idol Season 3 (his favorite), the film and soundtrack resonated with him because of the all too familiar narrative of the most talented person in the room having to contend with implicit bias preventing them from living their best life. We talked about the glory of Jennifer's journey from losing American Idol to winning at the Oscars, the difference between singers and sangers, Detroit vs. Chicago as a backdrop for the film, and what it sounds like when a Cadillac commercial get's "Pat Booned" (an Oliver Wang original saying). Why did the film propel Jennifer Hudson to the stardom possibly meant for Beyonce (AT THAT TIME). Who knew Eddie Murphy had this sort of vocal range? Who's version of "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" was better: the original J.H. or the new J.H.? Tre'vell helped us answer those questions and more!
