#154 - Imagine plunging down a 35-foot waterfall strapped inside a kayak, or trying to compose a stunning piano piece that captures the serenity of nature. These are just fragments of Jon Cheney's extraordinary journey as a creator, adventurer, entrepreneur, and man of faith. From his early years in a musical household where his parents prioritized owning a grand piano before even having proper furniture, to his teenage years in Paraguay learning Spanish, Jon's life has been defined by embracing new challenges. His remarkable ability to master languages – including Mandarin Chinese during his church mission – parallels his approach to music composition, where he sees patterns and structures that most miss. The heart of our conversation explores Jon's passion for whitewater kayaking and the profound life lessons it's taught him. "You're going to flip over in life," Jon explains with the wisdom of someone who's faced Class 5 rapids and business setbacks alike. "But when you've learned that you can flip over and then get back up and be okay, then the world really opens up." This philosophy has guided him through entrepreneurial ventures, creative pursuits, and personal challenges. What makes Jon's perspective particularly refreshing is his recent epiphany about pursuing multiple passions. After years of praying for divine guidance on which path to choose – music, adventure, business, or writing – he found peace in Elder Uchtdorf's simple wisdom: "It mattereth not, only be faithful." This liberating principle has energized Jon to embrace all facets of his creative spirit rather than waiting for permission to begin.Whether you're considering your own adventure into whitewater kayaking, struggling to choose between multiple passions, or simply seeking inspiration from someone who's mastered the art of getting back up after life flips you over, Jon's story will leave you both entertained and equipped with a new perspective on life's rapids. Daily Prophet: Talks from leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
May we all seek and find the higher joy that comes from devoting our lives to our Heavenly Father and His Beloved Son.
In April 2024 General Conference, Elder Uchtdorf said something poignant, "Life is not an endless sequence of emotional highs." However, he went on to say that joy can be found every day. There are joys that God has given all around us that we can enjoy temporally. He wants that for us! But there is also a higher joy that can only come through living the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This joy is an eternal joy! In today's episode, Kathryn Davis and Kalo Latu discuss tapping into that higher, eternal joy. Join us for Lift Up Your Heart! We're coming to Phoenix on September 21st! Use code PODCAST10 at checkout for $10 off per registration!
Elder Uchtdorf speaks about joy! We all feel sadness and happiness, anger and love. He reminds us that through the gospel, we can feel lasting joy and gives three ways to find joy in this life - draw near unto God, look for it, and serve others. He ends with an invitation to do those things. “Life is not an endless sequence of emotional highs. “For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things.” And if God Himself weeps, as the scriptures affirm He does, then of course you and I will weep as well. Feeling sad is not a sign of failure. In this life, at least, joy and sorrow are inseparable companions. Like all of you, I have felt my share of disappointment, sorrow, sadness, and remorse.” “The gospel of Jesus Christ is truly the “good news of great joy”! It is a message of matchless hope! A message of yoke-bearing and burden-lifting. Of light-gathering. Of heavenly favor, higher understanding, holier covenants, eternal security, and everlasting glory!” An invitation: “During the coming days, weeks, and months, may I invite you to: Spend time in a sincere, full-hearted effort to draw near to God. Seek diligently for everyday moments of hope, peace, and joy. Bring joy to others around you.” If you'd like to be part of the conversation: Email: genconfconvos@gmail.com Facebook: General Conference Conversations Instagram: @generalconferenceconversations You can also watch this podcast on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoiavmFctfCBB68kWaKVy0g

For over 50 years, For the Strength of Youth has been a guide for generations of Latter-day Saint youth. I always keep a copy in my pocket, and I share it with people who are curious about our standards. It has been updated and refreshed to better cope with the challenges and temptations of our day. The new version of For the Strength of Youth is available online in 50 different languages and will also be available in print. It will be a significant help for making choices in your life. Please embrace it as your own and share it with your friends. This new version of For the Strength of Youth is subtitled A Guide for Making Choices. To be very clear, the best guide you can possibly have for making choices is Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the strength of youth. So the purpose of For the Strength of Youth is to point you to Him. It teaches you eternal truths of His restored gospel—truths about who you are, who He is, and what you can accomplish with His strength. It teaches you how to make righteous choices based on those eternal truths.13 It's also important to know what For the Strength of Youth does not do. It doesn't make decisions for you. It doesn't give you a “yes” or “no” about every choice you might ever face. For the Strength of Youth focuses on the foundation for your choices. It focuses on values, principles, and doctrine instead of every specific behavior. The Lord, through His prophets, has always been guiding us in that direction. He is pleading with us to “increase [our] spiritual capacity to receive revelation.”14 He is inviting us to “hear Him.”15 He is calling us to follow Him in higher and holier ways.16 And we are learning in a similar way every week in Come, Follow Me. Though choices may have taken you far from the Savior and His Church, the Master Healer stands at the road that leads home, welcoming you.
Do you hear the story of the prodigal son and relate a little too much to feeling like there is no way back? What if we thought about the covenant path being something exciting? "Even if we aren't all the way there, the Father will run to meet us where we are." Magnify contributor Cristi Brazao is here to discuss Elder Uchtdorf's recent General Conference Address “The Prodigal and the Road that Leads Home.” Cristi's busy schedule with her four children as well as assistant professor duties has led her to some interesting spiritual reminders that she shares in this episode. Cristi's three spiritual takeaways: His love is everlasting: The Savior and His atonement can help us wipe away the feeling that we don't deserve His love. The Lord will follow us as far as we wander, and he will rejoice when we are back. His love is bountiful for both those who have wandered, and those who strive to stay on the path. The path is exciting: In the story of the prodigal son, there are two different people who experience the path. Perhaps we can find ourselves as both the brother who leaves all behind, and the brother who stays. At different points in the story, they each felt that the path was difficult or not worth it. But the part that is exciting is that at the end, there is a feast, and it's a celebration for both! I can rejoice with angels: There are people on both sides of the veil here to cheer us on as we walk the covenant path. We need each other on the path, and by sharing our stories, we will find that we are rejoicing with angels. My friend Chris Rich (married mother of three, husband and all three children stepped away from the Church, grew up in SLC, lives in Western Massachusetts, professional life coach) joins us to share her story. Chris talks learning to process the emotions (worried, angry, disappointment, resentment, and grief) of having family members leave the church and learning how to get through those emotions to find peace. Chris talks about the constant thought of “this isn't what I signed up for” but learning to get past that perspective into a more healthy and sustainable mindset. Chris talks about her efforts to get her husband back to church—but then deciding “my job is to love, Jesus job is to save”. She talks about moving beyond “the only way to be happy is if my husband comes back to church.” Chris also talks about “clean pain” and “dirty pain” and how dirty pain can result in getting stuck (like a hamster wheel) and how to move beyond that pain. Chris talks about loving and supporting her family now. Seeing the good in their lives and contributions to society. Chris talks about how “fear is a hard emotion to parent from” and her end goal now with her family is “connection”. This is one of the best podcasts we've done to find peace, hope, and love when family members leave the church. I was so moved listening to Chris's insights—including gospel insights, scriptures, talks and the power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Thank you, Chris, for being on the podcast. Help your children build faith in Jesus Christ, love His gospel and His Church, and prepare for a lifetime of righteous choices.
As I was watching my little nephew, recently, he shared with me a story about picking blackberries with my brother. While he was out with his cousin and my brother picking blackberries, my brother fell in the blackberry bushes. My brother needed help and he was only with 2 little children who could help him. My nephew had to pull him out. If any of you know about blackberry bushes, the thorns are not fun to get stuck in your skin or on your body. They are very painful. When my nephew told me the story, I was worrying about my children, and some of the struggles that they are facing. I thought about the blackberry bushes and how many times my children have symbolically pulled me from the blackberry bushes. I listened to different general conference talks, which brought me comfort. One of the talks that touched me was from Elder Uchtdorf called Jesus Christ is the Strength of Parents. Join me today as I share seven things that Elder Uchtdorf talked about in his talk. Dieter f Uchtdorf said, “Parents, thank you for everything you're doing to raise your children. And children, thank you for everything you're doing to raise your parents, because as every parent knows, we often learn as much from our children about faith, hope, and charity as they learn from us!” bethnewellcoaching.com bethnewellcoaching@gmail.com.

The call to parent in this life is one that Elder Uchtdorf said, “reflects the pattern of heaven.” The opportunity to help raise the rising generation—both as parents and leaders—can be a privilege and a responsibility. Elder Uchtdorf taught in his April 2023 General Conference message that Jesus Christ can be our strength and our guide as we try to parent and teach like Him. "In the eternal perspective, it will all work out." - Shawni Pothier This episode features two sisters—Saren Loosli and Shawni Pothier—and Kathryn discussing Elder Uchtdorf's recent message in General Conference, April 2023. They discuss this message and how small and simple efforts as parents and leaders can be magnified by the Lord. Top takeaways from this episode: God has given us an enormous amount of trust as parents to raise his children, and we need to be able to trust our children as well as we follow the divine pattern of heaven. Look for miracles that happen as parents and celebrate our children's wins! God is a god of second chances, so when we feel like we've made a mistake in parenting, it's important to remember that he always gives us more chances. Life is long, and there is so much time to recover and repair relationships in this life. An apology for your child can go a long way. Small and simple invitation: Pray very specifically for an act of love that you can do on a regular basis with your families. ""Many of you are now passing through physical, mental, and emotional trials that could cause you to cry out, 'When I've tried all my life to be good, why has this happened to me?' Now I wish to encourage those who in the midst of hard trials who feel their faith may be fading under the onslaught of troubles. There seems to me no better answer to the question of why trials come, and what we are to do, than the words of the Lord Himself, who passed through trials for us more terrible than we can imagine. You may have seen the need for that foundation as I have, at the bedside of someone ready to give up the fight to endure to the end. If the foundation of faith is not embedded in our hearts, the power to endure will crumble. [Mother yelling to her son] Moroni, the son of Mormon in the Book of Mormon told us how. He teaches the simple and sweet truth that acting on even a twig of faith allows God to grow it. That particle of faith --most precious-- which you should protect, and use to whatever extent you can, is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. You and I have faith, that the way to rise through and above trials, is to believe that there is a Balm in Gilead, and that the Lord has promised, 'I will not forsake thee. 'Curing does not come automatically through the passage of time, but it does take time. Getting older does not do it alone, it is serving God and others persistently with full heart and soul that turns testimony of truth into unbreakable spiritual strength. If we have faith in Jesus Christ, the hardest, as well as the easiest of times in life can be a blessing. In all conditions all we can choose the right with the guidance of the spirit. We have the gospel of Jesus Christ shape and guide our lives if we choose it. We never need to feel that we are alone or unloved in the Lord's service because we never are. We can feel the love of God. The Savior has promised angels are on our left and on our right to bear us up, and He always keeps His word. His love is unfailing I so testify, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.""
