You're familiar with the standard options: cloth or disposable diapers. However, there's a third choice used by nearly half of all children in the world. We call it "EC" or Elimination Communication, and it involves teaching babies how to use the toilet from the moment they're born. But, how do you train newborns to use a potty? And doesn't it get messy? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Since our last episode featuring Nicole Cheever aired nearly a year ago during which we discussed Elimination Communication, we're thrilled to welcome her back to exclusively discuss potty training! This is not your typical potty training pep talk. Nicole breaks down potty training the Go Diaper Free way. This method is aligned with how our wise women ancestors successfully got their babies out of diapers no later than 18 months old without bribes, sticker charts, shame, and coercion. How and why did we get to where we are today— a time when diapering our children well beyond 2-3 years old has been normalized and in some cases even encouraged? In this episode, I talk to Maru Rojas again. Maru is an Aware Parenting instructor in the UK and is originally from Mexico. She was a guest on the podcast on episode 139, also talking about sleep. If you haven't listened to that episode, I highly recommend listening to it after this one. Maru shares her journey of sleep with her daughter and son, as she gradually increased the depth of her understanding and practice of Aware Parenting. In particular, she talks about her daughter's night waking and moving all around the bed as a toddler. She shares how she stopped breastfeeding at night, and about her increasing awareness of the surprising control pattern that was the lynchpin for more sleep. She also shares more about the huge difference in sleep between her daughter and her son, with whom she started practicing Aware Parenting with at birth, alongside having much more understanding and experience with Aware Parenting by that time. Maru is also a teacher of Elimination Communication and offers courses and 1:1 consultations in both EC and Aware Parenting. You can find out more about her work and can contact her at: https://parenttogether.co.uk/ and https://www.instagram.com/_maru.rojas_/

Sacred Window Podcast: Nurturing Awareness in Postpartum Care
Samantha Veitch is the founder of Emerging Wisdom Care. She is an Ayurvedic Postpartum Doula and Elimination Coach. Elimination Communication (EC) is the practice of learning your baby's elimination cues and being able to anticipate the process, thereby reducing the need for diapers. Essentially, it's infant potty training, though Samantha explains why she doesn't often use those words. In this episode, Samantha shared how she explains Elimination Communication to her clients. She discusses how this is an age old practice rather than a new fad families are exploring. We discuss incredibly valuable bonding and psychological benefits of this practice for babies, parents and how it integrates beautifully with the healing process in postpartum. Samantha shares how this practice is so beneficial right after birth, and how it becomes even easier when started early. She also encourages it as a fun and relaxed practice, rather than a stressful project to be strict about. In our conversation she shares cues to look and listen for, easy ways to get started, and the 4 entry points for elimination communication. I loved this conversation and learned so much. I know you will love it too. Below, Samantha shares some of the resources mentioned in the interview. Enjoy! The MOTR moms are back! In today's episode, we welcome Nicole Cheever who is a mom of three, EC (Elimination Communication) connoisseur, and co-host of the Go Diaper Free podcast for an illuminating and humbling conversation on all things EC. Nicole reveals how and when the diaper industry began prying its avaricious claws into busy moms, and how the downward spiral our modern lifestyle rooted in convenience culture has had detrimental psychological and physical impacts when we choose to leave kids in diapers well into toddlerhood and beyond. EC doesn't have to be this all or nothing idealistic and unattainable endeavor that only crunchy full-time stay-at-home moms can accomplish. Just the opposite, actually! Nicole dissects the assumption that prematurely pottying kids is "traumatic". After listening to today's episode, you'll hopefully feel assured that regardless of your prior traumas or pitfalls with EC'ing and potty-training and despite your children's ages, you can take simple actions and make mindset shifts to successfully EC and ultimately fully potty train starting right now.Feeling inspired and ready to take on the not-so-challenge? In this episode of the podcast, I talk with Nicole Moore, international facilitator and trainer of Birth Into Being. We discuss how we met many years ago through Elimination Communication, which Nicole went on to make a film about. She talked about watching the video Birth as We Know it and the huge effect it had on her and her calling as she got completely swept up into Birth Into Being. We talk about one particular scene of a woman giving birth in water and how powerful and beautiful it was. Nicole explains what Birth Into Being is - a philosophy and healing modality which helps people create new imprints in their limbic system, replacing those that were formed in the very beginnings of life. This can be particularly powerful for women before giving birth. She also shares how it ties in perfectly with Aware Parenting. She also talks about the wider social context within which she sees this work and the vision and potential for bringing babies into the world with imprints of being deeply loved. You can find out all about Nicole's work and Birth into Being at www.birthintobeing.com and www.birthintobeing.com.au

In this episode, I talk with Maru Rojas, an Aware Parenting instructor in the UK who shares about her very different experience with sleep with her first child and second child. The first time around, her baby was very restless all night long or was feeding for most of the night and she had very little sleep. She learnt about Aware Parenting and gradually, sleep changed. The second time around, she started with Aware Parenting from the beginning and her son slept peacefully and for much longer periods. She talked about the time it took to support her daughter to 'catch up' with expressing feelings that had been repressed, the trauma she experienced of having so little sleep, and how she called for help from her mum to support her with listening to feelings with her second child. She also offers parents the invitation to listen in deeply to themselves and to create a sleep set-up that works for their unique family. We also talk about the relief of not needing to try to get babies to sleep quickly, why there's no such thing as 'overtired' in Aware Parenting, and the ease of babies sleeping peacefully when there's noise around or we need to move them whilst they're sleeping. Maru also specialises in Elimination Communication and potty learning. She offers 1-1 consultations, an online mothers' circle and online courses. You can find out more about her and her work at: https://parenttogether.co.uk/ and on social media at https://www.instagram.com/_maru.rojas_/

In today's episode, you'll hear from Nicole Cheever, Mama of three and Certified Go Diaper Free Coach. Nicole and Sammy share their experiences with elimination communication and how pottying babies from birth is a form of tuning into our intuition as parents. Nicole explains why our country differs from others in the way that we use diapers, and how the narrative that we should wait until our children are “ready” to potty train stemmed from Pampers hiring a pediatrician to convince parents that our babies should be in diapers longer. She touches on the importance of 18 months as the true period for potty training readiness, and how to start your part-time or full-time EC through learning baby's cues and tuning into our intuition as parents. In this episode:Elimination communication vs. potty trainingBabies don't want to soil themselves, starting at birthWhy you should be looking for a non-absorbent diaperHow diaper marketing has tricked parents into delaying potty trainingHow authority and the “god complex” with doctors robs mothers of their intuitionMontessori & Elimination Communication: 12-18 months as the sensitive period for toilet learningThe importance of diaper free time for all babiesHow to begin your part-time or full-time EC journeyShow References:Learn more about Elimination Communication, browse the book and baby potty at godiaperfree.comA CHILD-ORIENTED APPROACH TO TOILET TRAINING, paper by T. It might seem unrealistic, and unlikely, but for ‘elimination communication' is becoming ever more popular. At its most simplistic, it could be seen as toilet training your newborn but there's so much more to it. Irish mammy Aisling Fitzgibbon is trialling it with her son, and hopes to have him trained by the time he's two. She joined Dermot and Dave to explain how she got involved, the negative feedback she received initially and why it works for her.
While most parents continue to use nappies, most of which end up in landfill, some are trying out the increasingly popular ‘Elimination Communication' method. But what is it and how does it work? Barborba Svecova, from Elimination Communication Ireland joined Sean on the show...

Elimination Communication is often perceived as inconvenient. It's different; unknown; potentially...{gasp}...dirty. Today I debunk this myth clearly and calmly, and show how pottying your baby (when started and practiced properly) is actually less mess and time-consuming than dealing with diaper changes. Plus I share my best tips so you can do Elimination Communication with balance, convenience, and sanity intact! Danielle Daure holds a Master's Degree in Education and has over 20 years' combined experience in education and behavior analysis. She is a Board Certified and Licensed Behavior Analyst (BCBA, LBA). For years, Danielle worked with children as old as five with extreme anxiety around toilets, to the point where they had severe constipation through tears and tantrums. She saw frustrated parents trying to reward and/or punish their children into potty-training; children who couldn't start preschool because they weren't out of diapers; and even older toddlers with impacted bowels who had to be hospitalized because of days of withholding bowel movements. Toilet training isn't inherently difficult to learn; it is only that adults haven't been taught how to property introduce children to the toilet in a way that's natural and developmentally-appropriate. She has learned personally and professionally that when parents take simple daily steps, just 2-3 minutes per day from about four months on, toilet training will develop as easily and naturally as learning how to walk and talk and ride in a carseat. Her method is called Developmental Toilet Training, and doesn't subscribe to the diaper-free approach of the well-known Elimination Communication method because she says it's not practical, nor is it especially beneficial, to rush the process during infancy and avoid diapers entirely. Danielle, who offers a video series for parents, also encourages her clients to avoid using training-potties. Today, she walks us through her method for creating the easiest transition from diapers to toilet, and, surprisingly, the process isn't about getting to the goal of potty-training as soon as possible; it's about creating a safe, happy, stress-free and rewarding process for parents and children along the way.Developmental Toilet Training Website**********This show is sponsored by:Silverette USA*DYPER*NOM Maternity*Vyana Infant Massage*Wildbird.co*Beautiful Births and Beyond*Postpartum Soothe**Use promo code DOWNTOBIRTHConnect with Cynthia and Trisha at:Instagram: @downtobirthshow on InstagramEmail: Contact@DownToBirthShow.comCall: (802) 438-3696 (802-GET-DOWN)Work with Cynthia:Email: Cynthia@HypnoBirthingCT.com Text: 203-952-7299 to RSVP to attend a free information session live on Zoom. In this episode we hear from both birthing partners, Melanie & Tobias sharing the births of their two little ones, Aurora & Indigo. Melanie & Tobias are Swedish, but have been on the road for a few years and they birthed in Bali, Indonesia and Orba, Spain. When they found out they were expecting Aurora, they decided to seek out Ibu Robin Lim a renowned midwife in Bali, to support them through the process of becoming parents for the first time. They share their home birth in Bali, the experience of birthing in a country and language that's not their native and staying in for a month after birth.Melanie & Tobias had Lotus Births with both of their kids, which means that the placenta stays attached to the baby until it naturally falls off. They also practiced Elimination Communication, which is when the baby goes diaper free and parent and child learn to communicate through signs when it is time to go.Their second home birth, with Indigo, took place in Spain, and they share how it was trying to navigate planning for a birth during the pandemic and finding the proper support and the best place for them to birth. We also discuss how important it is for both birthing partners to be equally involved in the process of creating, growing and birthing a human and how there are so many ways for the non-birthing parent to help and support the one who is giving birth. If you would like to reach out to Melanie & Tobias, or if you'd like to see their births, you can find them as Love Conscious Family on the following channels:YouTubeInstagramInstagram (Swedish Version)You can also send me an email at the9monthspodcast@gmail.com and I'll forward everything to them from there.Visit The 9 Months Podcast directory for more stories or if you'd like to share your story with me on the podcast, you can find all the details here.Follow me on Instagram @9monthspodcast.

Here, we love to learn new things and decide what works for us and our family.. We're the moms that support instead of judge and know there are many ways to do something right. I'd love to connect on Instagram @heyshaylaWe've been doing Elimination Communication since our daughter was 6 months old. And even though we don't catch EVERYTHING, we've enjoyed it. I recently had Andrea Olson (@godiaperfree) on my podcast (Episode 023) and told her our daughter was doing well but still in diapers at 21 months. She told me to pull the diaper and let it roll! Well, we're a month in and we're just starting to get the hang of it! I wanted to share what has helped me and the problems that we had. I hope you find this helpful! And if you want to go with Andrea's toddler approach... maybe get the book before you start. Unlike what I did! Can you imagine never having to change a poopy diaper? Can you imagine adventuring with your young babies without wondering where you will set up a diaper changing station? Andrea Olson can, because she did Elimination Communication with all 5 of her kids…basically potty training from birth. We are going to learn the tricks of her trade, and the why behind it! Andrea Olson never intended on teaching people about baby potty training, and like many, she didn't even realize Elimination Communication (EC) existed until her mid-20's. Since then, she says it has become her passion, her career, and her motivation. She started Elimination Communication with her first son at birth. Soon after, she started helping other moms practice EC. That turned into a pamphlet, which turned into a book, and more books, and videos, and courses, and...the list goes on! For over 10 years now, Andrea has helped thousands of parents worldwide learn about and practice Elimination Communication. Elimination Communication practices using listening and responding to the cries and signals that our kids show us, as early as newborns, that they need to relieve themselves. Reminder: Poop, even in disposable diapers, is never supposed to go in the landfill; the poop should be put into the toilet before the diaper is disposed of. Elimination Communication Pros: You save a ton of money on diapers It reduces fussiness and colic-symptoms It helps make breastfeeding easier It gives babies a sense of control (in a good way) It's makes for less to clean up, or wash The process is quicker No blow outs! Babies smell better It gives you and your kiddos a deeper connection It is okay to do part-time EC, if daycare or other care providers are not on board. Adventuring with EC: Signs they need to relieve themselves in the carrier – they will “buck” and try to get out Bring a tiny potty (or top hat potty) that's easy to travel with on adventures Allow them to go in the car before and after adventure (or after a nap in the carrier) “Offer” them a chance to go whenever you transition or when your gut is telling you they may need to go Fun tip: Bring journaling and crafting for potty time before adventures (especially when you have multiple kids who need turns using the potty – crafting is perfect waiting material) Elimination Communication Cons: Effort! There is the upfront work of being extremely present and learning your baby's cues After getting out of diapers completely, sometimes parents/kids don't know how to “finalize the potty training” So, when can you start? Anytime! From birth onwards. Once you hit 12-months, but especially 15-months, you would go directly to potty training, and not practice EC. Clinical terms for parenting styles can often be misunderstood and loaded with bias. ‘Elimination Communication' is one of these harsh sounding descriptions that seems to come out of a science lab! It ‘really means' paying attention to your infant or toddlers verbal and non-verbal cues, and Cindy has lived it and writes about it. #164: Did you know babies can potty from birth? I had no idea until my guest Andrea Olson from @godiaperfree came on the podcast to educate us about Elimination Communication (EC). EC is a gentle, non-coercive way to respond to a baby's natural hygiene needs...and Andrea is the diaper free GURU here to teach us how and why! Just like babies have the desire and ability to feed themselves solid food when the time is right, babies are instinctual when it comes to pottying. Andrea argues that pottying your baby can make baby-raising cleaner, easier, MUCH more connected to you plus it's better for the environment. If you think a self-feeding baby sounds exciting, I think you'll love hearing about your self-pottying baby's potential too! We're back this week with Andrea from Go Diaper Free. This episode is all about Elimination Communication. We're here to demystify it and to give you both the tools and confidence to get you and your baby started. Let's teach our babies diapers are not their toilet and experience deep levels of connection and communication when we honor their dignity and instincts. And by the way - yes you can do this, and it's actually, really truly, not hard.
Today's episode is with Andrea, from Go Diaper Free. But this show isn't about Elimination Communication - it's about Andrea, and her journey to freebirth. Her first birth was sabotaged by her midwives, sending her into postpartum depression. She then moved to a state where midwifery was illegal, so with her second she began compassing towards doing it at home on her own. Andrea is brutally honest about her own journey of facing her fears and how much work there was to do within herself to finally freebirth her fifth baby in her full power.
