Our guest tonight is a British adventurer and motorcyclist who became one of the first British women to circumnavigate the globe by motorcycle in the early 1980s. Her journey spanned three years and took her across the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, India, and throughout Europe. Elspeth Beard was just 23 years old when she set out on her journey in 1982. She had recently graduated from architecture school and was feeling lost and disillusioned with her life in London. She decided to take a year off and travel, using her motorcycle as her primary mode of transportation. As she rode across the world, Elspeth faced countless challenges and obstacles. She dealt with breakdowns, injuries, and illnesses, all while navigating unfamiliar terrain and cultures. But through it all, she persevered, driven by her love of adventure and her desire to prove that women could be just as capable as men when it came to motorcycle travel and she's here with us tonight on Break/Fix to share her adventure with you!  And joining me to help add Elspeth's story to the Break/Fix collection is returning guest Jeff Willis who interviewed Elspeth as part of his new book (hu)man in the machine.

Originally aired - July 31, 2017In 1982, at the age of just twenty-three and halfway through her architecture studies, Elspeth Beard left her family and friends in London and set off on a 35,000-mile solo adventure around the world on her 1974 BMW R60/6.Reeling from a recent breakup and with only limited savings from her pub job, a tent, a few clothes and some tools, all packed on the back of her bike, she was determined to prove herself. She had ridden bikes since her teens and was well traveled. But nothing could prepare her for what lay ahead. When she returned to London nearly two and a half years later she was stones lighter and decades wiser. She'd ridden through unforgiving landscapes and countries ravaged by war, witnessed civil uprisings that forced her to fake documents, and fended off sexual attacks, biker gangs and corrupt police convinced she was trafficking drugs. She'd survived life-threatening illnesses, personal loss and brutal accidents that had left permanent scars and a black hole in her memory. And she'd fallen in love with two very different men. In an age before email, the internet, mobile phones, sat-navs and, in some parts of the world, readily available and reliable maps, Elspeth achieved something that would still seem remarkable today.Told with honesty and wit, this is the extraordinary and moving story of a unique and life-changing adventure. Her website: www.elspethbeard.comThe Book: www.bookdepository.com/Lone-Rider-Elspeth-Beard/9781782438045Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

This week's Driven Chat Podcast is absolutely definitely 'extra-extra special.Elspeth Beard and Jacqui Furneaux have both embarked on international adventures on two wheels. Elspeth circumnavigated the world as a young 23-year-old on her BMW, crossing continents, exploring unknown territories and facing multiple challenges along the way. Jacqui didn't embark on her journey until a little later in life, however, the adventure was ambitious for many different reasons. Jacqui purchased a Royal Enfield motorcycle in India and rode it home, back to the UK. In this conversation hosted by John Marcar and Amy Shore, we take a deep dive into the brains and ambition of two frankly inspiring individuals. Both Elspeth and Jacqui share details of the good, the bad and the ugly of their travels and explain how their outlook on life transformed following the adventures. If you would like to learn more and read more about both Elspeth and Jacqui's adventures, you can do so by purchasing their books on their websites:Elspeth - https://www.elspethbeard.com/Jacqui - http://www.jacquifurneaux.com/Find the episode in the usual podcast places and see the entire back catalogue at drivenchat.comGet in touch with the show via email - podcast@drivenchat.com or slip into our DM's on your preferred social feed, and don't forget to check out our youtube channel via YouTube.com/DrivenChat, to see some premium visual car content. The Driven Chat podcast is brought to you by Paramex Digital - for more information on Driven Chat, visit www.drivenchat.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Join me in conversation as I welcome Elspeth Beard, an award-winning architect. Elspeth has many amazing architectural accomplishments under her belt, however, the one that I love the most is the Munstead Water Tower that was built in 1898.  Elspeth purchased through auction in 1989 and fought local council and won on appeal to be able to build her dream home. It did take 7 years to build. Elspeth learned at a young age that as long as there is a will there is a way. Midway through her studies to become an Architect, Elspeth began an epic journey on a 1974 BMW R60/6  that already had 45000 miles on it and rode this bike around the world.  On her journey, Elspeth found herself and regained an interest in Architecture from all the wonderful buildings she had seen on her journey. When Elspeth started on her journey, no one seemed interested, many did not think she could do it, said she would be back in a few months.  Elspeth pushed on and completed the trip around the world and was a little disheartened when she returned and found that her family and her friends were not interested in her story. It wasn't until 35 years later that a friend shared her story with BMW and they published it on their international webpage with a photo and we can say that the rest is history. Elspeth is now credited with being one of the first British women to ride a motorcycle around the world. Today everyone wants to hear Elspeth's story. Although as she said to me, Architecture has been my life for over 30 years where my epic journey was just under two years.Be sure to pick up Elspeth's Book, available through her website or Amazon.  Find out more about ElspethWebsite: Elspeth BeardFacebook: Elspeth BeardInstagram: Elspeth BeardArchitect: Elspeth BeardAbout the HostRandall McKeownwww.podvault.ca

In 1982 at the age of twenty three Elspeth Beard set off on a solo trip to ride her 1974 R60/6 BMW motorcycle around the world. The journey took two and a half years, covering 35,000 miles. She set off alone with no sponsorship or support, in an age before email, mobile phones and satnavs and it was not until 2008 that she discovered that she had become the first British woman to ride a motorcycle around the world. In 2008 BMW commissioned and published a short article about the round the world trip for BMW International and as a result of this her story gradually spread. In 2015 she decided to write a book about the adventure and her book ‘Lone Rider' was published in the UK in 2017. We talk about how little interest anyone really had in her trip, before, during and after and how she felt about that. We talked about resilience, stubbornness and determination in the face of accidents, robberies and even a miscarriage. We discuss how she managed her money and how she dealt with many many unwanted threats to her personal safety. There is a poignant and vivid theme throughout the book of a young woman discovering herself and how to understand love, with a tangled love story mixed in with the girls' own adventure stories. The chat comes almost to an end with us talking about how this formative trip helped to shape the rest of her life, giving her the confidence to take on anything and everything. And finally, we discuss who should play her in the movie. Sadly, we're both too out of touch to know anyone currently able to play a very tall, very bold 23 year old biking pioneer. Welcome to the fifth instalment of the ‘If Not Now Then When?' podcast. I'm excited to say that for this episode I've had the chance to speak with the unbelievably modest powerhouse that is Elspeth Beard. Not only is she an award-winning architect, but most notably she is the first English female to ride her motorcycle solo around the world. In early 2014 she was contacted out of the blue by an agent in Hollywood who had found an article on the internet and expressed an interest in buying the rights to her story, with a view to making a film about it. Elspeth's story is captivating, and her drive is second to none. I urge anyone with the time to tune into this episode and to read her book ‘Lone Rider'. Her travel tales and dedication to her water tower project highlights how much of an extraordinarily strong and driven individual she is. This week on our motorcycle podcast we are joined by the one and only Elspeth Beard. She was the first woman to ride around the world, and since releasing her book last year, has become a reluctant idol. Reluctant in the fact that for over 30 years no one knew of her accomplishment, but since sharing her story recently, the world has been showering her with praise. She shares some more stories from her trip, talks about her new found fame, and lets us know if her future plans to make her villa in Italy a motorcycle tour destination. We also discuss some recent problems with spark plugs and alternators, as well as read listener emails and do our best to answer questions. We also draw a winner for this month's Patreon Prize Pack. Congratulations Adam Bambrough! With Liza, Kat P, Douglas, Bex, Bagel, Miss Emma, Elspeth, Michael, Henry, Nak and Isaac. What would it be like if you couldn't just turn on your computer and ask google all the questions you want to help plan your trip? Everything from planning and packing, to routing and picking your destinations. All the answers at your fingertips. And what if in the 1980's it was so against the norm for someone to set out on a long distance motorcycle trip, let alone a woman? Would you still have the nerve to ride around the world? Elspeth Beard has just published a book this summer, the one that we talked about in an interview with her last year. We'll remind you that it's the story of a 23 year old woman who in 1982 set off on a solo motorcycle trip around the world. Something relatively unheard of in those days, for both women and men. In fact, on her trip she only met two other motorcycle adventurers in the 2 1/2 years she was on the road.  Broken-hearted, she wasn't doing well in school and decided to embark on this trip to prove herself. Ridiculed by the editor and his "chauvinist colleagues" at a popular motorcycle magazine in London, she was only all that more determined to achieve her goal.  After years away, she returned home, wiser and with the knowledge that she could do anything she set out to do. But, publishing a book at the time seemed like a dead end road, as no one was interested in her story. And after storing away all her notes, audio files and memories for almost 35 years, she finally wrote the book that she wanted to all those years ago. And here we have it, Lone Rider - The First British Woman to Motorcycle Around the World. Elspeth Beard has shared some of her audio files with Adventure Rider Radio, the sound of her younger voice all those years ago that she recorded to share with her parents. And, we also talk to someone who was in a position to either empower or disempower her while she was on this trip, something Elspeth wasn't aware of at the time that we created this episode for you, our listener. The author of Lone Rider, Elspeth Beard, is an avid motorcyclist and award-winning architect living in a converted water tower in southeast England. To this day, she still rides her trusty BMW R 60/6. Elspeth's book is available on Amazon.  Hear more about Elspeth at http://www.adventureriderradio.com/adventure-rider-radio-episodes/2016/9/1/elspeth-beard-first-british-woman-to-motorcycle-around-the-world?rq=elspeth%20beard Show Sponsors: Max BMW BestRest Products Green Chile Adventure Gear Motobriiz IMS Products In Association With: The Good Adventure Company Music by Jason Shaw at www.audionautix.com

In 1982, twenty-four year old Elspeth Beard decided to set out on a round the world trip on her motorcycle. Having finished up three years of architectural studies, and with some changes in her personal life, she saved up about £1000 and then shipped her 1974 BMW R60/6 to New York where she began her journey. Elspeth regals and inspires us with some stories of her experiences and misadventures as she travelled 55,000 km until she returned to the United Kingdom in 1984, becoming the first English woman to ride a motorcycle around the world. With lessons learned from coping with everything from dysentary to stolen valuables, Elspeth proved herself a brave woman who will let nothing stop her from achieving whatever she wants. http://www.elspethbeardarchitects.com/projects/munsteadwatertower.html Adventure Rider Radio is Brought to You By: Max BMW Motorcycles Shop our Online Store featuring parts diagrams for every BMW model. Ordering parts and accessories has never been easier. In 1982, at the age of just twenty-three and halfway through her architecture studies, Elspeth Beard left her family and friends in London and set off on a 35,000-mile solo adventure around the world on her 1974 BMW R60/6. Reeling from a recent breakup and with only limited savings from her pub job, a tent, a few clothes and some tools, all packed on the back of her bike, she was determined to prove herself. In an age before email, the internet, mobile phones, sat-navs and, in some parts of the world, readily available and reliable maps, Elspeth achieved something that would still seem remarkable today. Told with honesty and wit, this is the extraordinary and moving story of a unique and life-changing adventure.
