This episode I had the opportunity to talk with Eric Dawson: Owner of Titan Barbell, mentor, coach, husband, father, and role model to many. Eric is extremely well spoken and I really enjoyed this conversation. As it turns out, he and I share very similar backgrounds: both high-school and college athletes, grew up working multiple trade/ labor jobs, and both ended up training in a corporate gym setting not because it was something we necessarily planned to do, but needed where our previous jobs were no longer feasible. After spending the first half an hour discussing that process, we talk about getting involved in Strength Sports, again, both at 27. In Eric's case, getting involved in competing is what led to him starting Titan out of his garage and eventually expanding to their current location in Stoneham. The contemporary silent film, Electric Appalachia, is a surprising, and surprisingly poignant look at how the coming of electricity changed Tennessee. Using archival footage, the film was put together by Eric Dawson, the director at TAMIS (the Tennessee Archive of Moving Image and Sound) and offers “a meditation on electricity and modernity in East Tennessee”. This silent film was created with two musicians in mind – guitarist William Tyler and harpist and synthesist Mary Lattimore, who add a moving, occasionally cosmic score. Listen to selections from their collaborative live soundtrack to Electric Appalachia, recorded at Brookfield Place.

This might be one of my favorite podcast interviews ever. Not just because I got to interview a dear high school friend who has positively impacted the world, but because of one word: HOPE.Today, I speak with Eric Dawson, CEO and founder of Peace First and co-founder of Rivet, about empathy for today's young changemakers, whether younger people are more or less empathetic than prior generations, and how we can empower them to impact change in their communities and the world now, not someday off in the future. We discuss what brands need to prove to young consumers today, and how they can leverage their influence and dollars to meet their business goals while supporting and delighting young changemakers and consumers - a virtuous cycle that leads to genuine goodness and real impact. Key Takeaways:Young people are the only group of humans that are talked about, almost exclusively, as potential. This is not true - young people, right now, are building the world. Those closest to the problems are also often the ones closest to the solutions. You cannot solve the problems of the world for others, only with them. As of 2020, young people control about $3 trillion in spending. They have choices - they no longer want to be consumers, they want to be citizens.  "It is our small acts that make a difference. Think about what are those proximal things that you can do - who and how you hire, where you send your kids to school, voting. These are the things that are going to make a difference in the future of our lives and our country. Dear Listeners, It was so great to hang out with Robert, Eric and Carol. The principals of UDK Casting. Not only are they people that I trust and admire, I'm envious to have friends who are doing what they love, and have been able to do it for decades. It's the perfect partnership because they share values, compliment each other, yet retain their uniqueness. They have earned the HOYT BOWERS AWARD, which is one of the most prestigious awards in the Casting community. It will be given to them at the Artios ceremony in LA in late January 2019.I am so happy for them and loved spending a half an hour recording them for this podcast so you can get to know them better as well. Congrats guys (and gal)Seth Coltanwww.obSETHed.com
