I am so thrilled to share this conversation with you guys - I have wanted to have Hannah Semler on the podcast since the beginning! I'm a big fan of FarmDrop - I'm both a customer and a vendor, and I love having the ability to try items from several different local farmers that are bringing their product practically to me! Hannah will say it better, so I'll leave her to it.Hannah also hosted a podcast called What is American Food, because she is so passionate about the origins - AND she was working with a food  waste rescue group as well. She also started a FarmDrop delivery program for Seniors who are homebound, so they, too can be nourished by our skilled farmers. Listen to the episode for more about all of this, and why Farmdrop is so important to her!Hannah and her trusty sidekick Barley travel the state of Maine together,  making sure things are organized and operating smoothly when customers come to pick up their goods. There are several dropoff/pickup Hubs throughout the state, and trying to get the vendors' products spread to other hubs than the one closest to them can't be easy! You're going to love Hannah - I can't imagine not loving her passion for what she does! Call to Action: I'd love to share this episode wide, and see if we can get some interest in other areas of the country for FarmDrop! Do you know of an area lacking a farmers market, or are you interested in being a FarmDrop vendor? The reach is WIDE with these products!FarmDrop website is here - check out all the options available at different locations, and see how cool it would be to start your own or be part of one! In this programme, ffinlo Costain talks to Josiah Meldrum, co-founder of the successful on-line retailer, Hodmedods. Josiah works with British farms to source top quality beans, pulses and grains - particularly less well-known foods, like the fava bean, grown in Britain since the Iron Age, but now largely forgotten. We talk about why Josiah thinks of Hodmedods as an agroecological retail business and about the need for strong supplier relationships. We discuss the benefits of scaling out rather than up, and the failure of fellow online food retailer, Farmdrop. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/farmgate/message

Farmers have been left picking up the pieces after the online Grocery company, Farmdrop, suddenly ceased trading last week. It specialised in connecting small scale farmers, growers and independent businesses with customers. As many as 450 suppliers will be affected by the company's collapse. Some farmers are owed tens of thousands of pounds, others delivered large orders of meat just hours before learning the company had gone into administration. The UK is facing its largest ever outbreak of avian flu. More than sixty cases have been confirmed across the country since the start of November with more than 2 million domestic birds infected. The Government's Chief Vet has told us the high level of infection on farms this year is down to higher than normal infections in wild birds. And parsnips are a key ingredient of Christmas dinner...which makes it a busy time of year for parsnip farmers! Presented by Caz Graham Produced for BBC Audio in Bristol by Heather Simons

Launched in 2016 by siblings Anna and William Brightman, UpCircle are the pioneers of the circular skincare trend. All UpCircle products are natural, organic, vegan, cruelty-free, palm oil-free, sustainable, handmade in the UK and housed in 100% recyclable packaging. But their key point of difference from other beauty brands is that each of their products is made with a core repurposed ingredient. “Natural” is the new “normal” – UpCircle go a step further with their waste-fighting formulations. Nature gives us lots of wonderful ingredients that make our skin healthier and more radiant – like used coffee grounds, chai spices and fruit stones. But they often end up going to landfill. Why should all that good stuff go to waste? It shouldn’t. That’s why UpCircle elevate leftover natural ingredients, bringing them back to life as beauty products your skin will love. UpCircle have taken the beauty world by storm. Since their rebrand less than a year ago the sibling duo have launched their by-product beauty range with Boots, Sainsbury’s, Holland & Barrett, Ocado, Urban Outfitters, Beauty Bay, Whole Foods, As Nature Intended, House of Fraser, Feel Unique, Farmdrop, Revital and many more! I’m excited about the fact that more people are thinking about going vegetarian or vegan. In this week’s Insights, I share my thoughts about these things and how I’m personally going about my diet and where I ultimately want to get to. Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/topic/podcasts/ for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: What I’m doing to make sure my principles around animal welfare are well-maintained but still consume meat The issues surrounding vegan and vegetarianism Key Takeaways: One of the issues around vegan and vegetarianism is the lack of nutrients in the diet, specifically vitamin B12. It’s possible to get a decent vegan diet but not get any decent nutrition. Without cutting out meat, you can change the types of meat that you’re eating and avoid the nasty meat that’s probably been massively inflated with hormones or steroids and priced cheaply. Going straight into vegetarian and vegan is not always a healthy option. Action Steps: If you’re not quite ready to go vegan or vegetarian all the way, then focus on the provenance of the meat that you’re eating and eat better quality meat. Leanne said: “The way we treat animals, our relationship towards animals, I think, has become hideously functional. And animals, they are purely to produce milk, to produce [eggs], to produce meat to ultimately make corporation money. And I find that very, very troubling.” “There’s little point in me being principled and vegan as a result, but with very poor health, and [it’s] affecting my health span as well as my quality of daily life.” Thanks for listening! Topics Discussed in this Episode: Diversity Role Models (DRM) My role as a Role Model and what the experience is like Examples of heartfulness Embracing diversity Making a big statement through Pride Key Takeaways: Doing the work with DRM is an example of heartfulness. Heartfulness is two things. One, it’s doing something for someone else that does have an impact for you. And two, it’s doing something that’s really for you. Action Steps: Practice heartfulness. Think about doing something for somebody else, but also reconnecting with things that you used to enjoy, even if it’s only for a short period of time per week. Embrace diversity. Look for the similarities between ourselves and not the differences. Look for what connects us. Leanne said: “[Being a Role Model] is really good work. It’s one of the most rewarding things I do because I feel like I directly make a difference to a child’s experience and how they understand themselves and think about themselves.” “If we looked for the similarities between ourselves and not the differences, what a different world it would be. Have you ever thought on how other chemicals enter our body? In this week’s Insight, I talk about the negative impact these strong chemicals and what you can do about it. Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/podcasts-blog for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: The effect of harmful household cleaning products How harmful chemicals in personal care products enter our body Key Takeaways: You don’t to kill all the bacteria. It’s good for our microbiome. It’s good for us to built up immunity using these things. So that, we aren’t too clean. They are full chemicals and that can cause problems with our hormones. A lot of these household products will come and close contact with your skin, if you use bleach on the floors and you walk on the floors, your feet will be absorbing some of that bleach. And they clean, but they also take out everything else. And they have a significant amount of collateral damage in terms of the fumes you inhaling. The largest organ of the body porous, so it absorbs very very easily. An implication to some of these is it can affect your hormones. It can affect the hormones in a number of different ways, and in every estrogen could be affected by certain products. Other hormones can be affected that can significantly impact our health. A few study in recent years, theories that aluminum based deodorants could increase the risk of breast cancer. That study suggested that chemicals in these deodorants, including aluminum, absorbing the skin and can have this effect. Action Steps: Slowly reduce the the use of chemical household cleaning products. Look for more natural products. Start small, reduce exposing your body to chemicals. Get to know more familiar on what these products do and what’s with in them. Leanne said: “This week, I just want to highlight and to create an awareness of what you put on your skin. And then, the chemicals and other such thing that are sprayed, wiped or used in home, because that also has benefit. Then you more likely to breathe them in, as well as absorbing them through the skin.” “So pay attention to all the different ways to come and contact with these chemicals, and try to reduce that chemical footprint if you like in your body.” Thanks for listening! Topics Discussed in this Episode: How Bayer was hit with a $2 billion fine for Roundup Eating organically and sourcing your produce locally from spray-free farms The negative impacts of products being shipped all over the country and across the world Key Takeaways: Roundup is a weed killer that’s used extensively around the world, particularly in the US. It’s been proven that being exposed to Roundup has carcinogenic effects. Know where your produce is coming from The benefits of eating organically and sourcing from spray-free farms: The quality of vegetables is so much higher You avoid consuming herbicides and pesticides on your food You avoid contributing to the negative impacts of products being shipped all over the country and across the world Action Steps: Eat organically. Source your produce locally from spray-free farms. Explore farmers markets. Grow your own vegetables. Leanne said: “Open your eyes a little bit to where your produce is coming from. Is it organic? Is it from a spray-free farm? What kind of journey has it had to get to you? Has it been around the world? And once to start paying attention to this stuff, you become really tuned into it.” “Educate yourself a little bit on what Roundup is and how that might affect you… See if you can start making some changes. Technology giants are gobbling up the online grocery market - and over the past year we’ve seen Amazon and Alibaba getting their teeth into bricks and mortar too. But do they want to transform the supermarket experience, or is this about harvesting even more consumer data? And what will all of this mean for farmers, your pocket, and the quality and sustainability of your food? Emily Thomas discusses with Brittain Ladd, a strategy, supply chain and logistics expert who formerly worked for Amazon leading worldwide expansion for Amazon Fresh, Pantry and Groceries; Scott Marlow, senior policy specialist for Rural Advancement Foundation International, a non-profit organization based in North Carolina supporting family farms; and Amanda Long, Director General of Consumers International, which works to empower and champion the rights of consumers. Plus, we visit Farmdrop, a London-based startup which aims to give customers a more ethical online shopping experience. In this solo episode, Leanne discusses what led her to review how she was living, the amount of stuff she was spending money on and consuming, and how she interacted with the planet. A key part of wellbeing is how you feel about yourself, and how you relate to the world, not just about how you’re feeling and mental, physical and emotional health, although they are all interrelated. In this show, Leanne talks about her recent epiphany and how she’s changed a number of personal practices to reduce waste, spend less, consume less and live more considerately. You can also follow your host, Mike, on Twitter @mikegelb ( https://twitter.com/MikeGelb ). You can also follow for episode announcements @consumervc ( https://twitter.com/ConsumerVc ). Some of the questions that I ask Sasha are - * What initially attracted you to venture capital? * Talk to me about the European landscape when it comes to the startup ecosystem, what makes you excited about it? * What's your definition of Series A? How do you think about that stage? * What are milestones that a startup has to achieve in order to raise a Series A? * What are some qualities you like to see in founders? * Since the United States is such a big market, you can create a massive business in the United States alone. I imagine it must be harder to scale in Europe since you're dealing with many countries. * What are some consumer trends that you are excited about? * Has COVID changed some of your thesis' around certain trends? * Has it been harder establishing conviction amongst founders since you have to meet with them remotely? * I recently had on Ezra Galston, who runs Starting Line, a VC fund out of Chicago. He mentioned that deals are getting done really quickly, almost at pre-COVID pace. Is this the same in Europe? * What's one thing that you would change about venture capital? * What's one company you had an opportunity to invest in, didn't and in retrospect wish you did? * What's your most recent investment and what makes you excited about it? * What's one book that inspired you personally and one book that inspired you professionally? * What's one piece of advice that you have for B2C founders?
