GreenUp Golf is a Danish company founded by a group of golf enthusiasts aiming to make the sport more sustainable. They specialize in producing eco-friendly golf accessories, notably golf tees, crafted from upcycled coffee grounds. This innovative approach helps minimize waste and reduces reliance on traditional materials like wood and plastic. On this episode of The Wednesday Match Play Podcast brought to you by Eden Mill St Andrews, Kristian joined me to share what inspired him to start GreenUp Golf, diving into the importance of sustainability in the golf industry. He also touched on his connection to my dear friend Michael Althoff, and how GreenUp tees perform compared to traditional wooden and plastic tees. We explored the feedback they've received, the honor of being named 2025 Best New Product at the PGA Show, and their exciting partnership with the ECCO Tour. This was a powerful and inspiring conversation, and it was an honor to have Kristian on the show. Let's tee off.

Transforming Coffee Grounds into a Biodegradable Plastic Alternative, with Dr. Srinivas Janaswamy

Brewing a Greener FutureEver wonder where your used coffee grounds go after they've been completed? Probably not. But at South Dakota State University, researchers are turning them into something entirely unexpected: plastic. Not just any plastic, but a biodegradable alternative to oil and gas-based plastics that dominate the industry today. This innovative approach not only tackles the issueof food and other biomass waste but also addresses the plastic industry's reliance on fossil fuels and the rampant plastic pollution that harms both planetary and human health. The Pervasiveness of PlasticThe vast majority of plastics are currently made from natural gas and crude oil, types of fossil fuel. As of 2019, this production process was responsible for 3.4 percent of the world's total greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, humanity produces over 300 million tons of plastic each year, resulting in widespread plastic pollution with adverse effects on both the environment and human health. Despite masquerading as a solution to excessive plastic waste, traditional plastic recycling is often ineffective due to contamination and industry deception. Thus, most plastic waste is diverted to landfills. Fossil fuel-based plastics take hundreds to thousands of years to decompose, and when they finally do, they release microplastics into the environment, which can infiltrate human bodies. Recognizing the need for a solution to this plastic crisis, Dr. Srinivas Janaswamy, the lead researcher, initially experimented with making biodegradable packaging using various agricultural byproducts, such as avocado peels, corn, oats, and wheat stalks. His focus has since shifted to spent coffee grounds, which contain lignocellulosic fibers — natural plant polymers essential for creating biodegradable plastics. The process of transforming coffee grounds into biodegradable films is quite intensive and involves drying, bleaching, and extracting the plant fibers from the coffee grounds. The resulting clear solution is then dried to form a strong, plastic-like film that can be used as a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic packaging.A Second Life for Coffee GroundsOne of the significant advantages of this solution is its potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from fossil-fuel-based plastic production and minimize plastic pollution. But on top of that, it provides a sustainable method of reusing otherwise wasted coffee grounds. Every morning, millions of people worldwide begin their day with a cup of coffee, a ritual shared by over 60% of Americans. Widespread enthusiasm for this caffeinated beverage has propelled it to become the second most traded commodity globally by volume, just behind oil. As a result, coffee shops are ubiquitous, generating an enormous amount of spent coffee grounds — approximately 8 million tons annually, much of which ends up in landfills. When left to waste away in landfills, coffee grounds can release methane, a potent greenhouse gas that exacerbates climate change. Meanwhile, biodegradable films derived from coffee grounds can decompose in soil within just 45 days, a stark contrast to traditional plastics. Because of their rapid biodegradation and abundance, spent coffee grounds provide an attractive resource for bioplastic packaging innovation.Market Barriers in a Plastic-Dependent WorldDespite its promising potential, the coffee ground-based film still faces challenges. The film has immense tensile strength — meaning it can withstand a great deal of stress before fracturing — but is less flexible than traditional plastic, which may ultimately limit its applications. Additionally, the production costs currently exceed those of fossil fuel alternatives. Nonetheless, Janaswamy is optimistic about its market potential, remaining confident that costs will decrease as technology evolves. As consumers become increasingly aware of the detrimental environmental and human health impacts of traditional plastics, there is a growing demand for eco-friendly alternatives. Even if these biodegradable plastics do come at a higher price, consumers may be willing to pay extra for the sustainability benefits they offer. Therefore, coffee ground-based packaging film presents an environmentally conscious solution without compromising the desired convenience of plastic packaging.About Our GuestDr. Srinivas Janaswamy, an associate professor at South Dakota State University's Department of Dairy and Food Science, continues to lead research on developing sustainable, biodegradable packaging materials as alternatives to traditional plastics. His work embodies the shift towards a more sustainable future, one in which waste is transformed into valuable resources and where our daily habits — like brewing a cup of coffee — can contribute to a cleaner planet.ResourcesEnvironment Energy Leader: Brewing Sustainability: Turning Spent Coffee Grounds into Biodegradable PackagingAirX Carbon: The Perfect Blend: Bio-Based Plastic Made from Coffee GroundsPackaging World: Coffee Grounds Potentially the Next BioplasticWaste Management Review: Study trials coffee grounds as plastic packagingFurther ReadingSouth Dakota State University: Could spent coffee grounds provide an alternative to plastic packaging?PubMed Central: Potential Uses of Spent Coffee Grounds in the Food IndustryWorld Economic Forum: 5 innovative ways your coffee grounds can be recycledUnited Nations Environment Programme: Plastic PollutionCarbon Brief: Why a UN Plastics treaty matters for climate changeResearch Gate: (PDF) Revolutionizing packaging: Bioplastics for superior food and pharmaceutical solutionsFor a transcript, please visit: https://climatebreak.org/transforming-coffee-grounds-into-a-biodegradable-plastic-alternative-with-dr-srinivas-janaswamy/.

Things You Didn't Know You Can Compost Composting isn't just for fruit and veggie scraps. There are plenty of surprising household items that can break down naturally and keep waste out of landfill. Pet Hair & Human Hair – Full of nitrogen, hair helps balance your compost pile. Nail Clippings – As long as they're free from polish. Cardboard Toilet Rolls & Egg Cartons – A great source of carbon (browns) for your compost bin (most people don't put enough browns/carbon into their compost and it gets stinky, so this is a great accessible one) Natural Wine Corks – Chop them up for faster breakdown. (Avoid plastic-based ones!) Used Paper Towels & Napkins – As long as they're not soaked in chemicals or grease. Coffee Grounds & Tea Bags – Tea bags must be plastic-free (many contain microplastics). Wooden Toothpicks & Bamboo Skewers – Break them into smaller pieces for easier decomposition. Old Cotton & Wool Socks – Only 100% natural fibres (no synthetics or elastane- unless the elastane is plant based, which is quite rare). Dead Houseplants & Cut Flowers – If they haven't been treated with pesticides. Pencil Shavings & Uncoated Paper Scraps – A good source of carbon-rich material. It's time to start thinking about winter and looking after your soil.  We all know that garden soil thrives when you add Organic material (compost!!!) to the soil. Just like the Sea-food soup it enriches the Fertiliser amount and that helps no, not just the plants, but certainly the tiny live-stock in the soil that feeds the plants through the roots: Photosynthesis is the way a plant feeds itself.  It allows the microbes and beneficial fungi to work on the mulch – it simply breaks the mulch down and turns it into a kind of slow-release fertiliser that will benefit the plants when everybody “wakes up” in spring.  Chipped prunings from your fruit trees, hedges, severed dead branches and twigs, old fallen fruits, berries, and husks are all ready to be recycled according to the law of “Circular Economy” which runs the planet and your garden.  My most wonderful tool in the garden is our Hansa C7 Chipper Machine; it works its bottom off at this time of the year.   Everything that goes through it will turn to mulch and everything that once lived will turn to compost, even Coffee grounds!  There are lots of articles that warn gardeners against using coffee grounds in the garden, so we've decided to have a go at that stuff (our son-in-law owns a French bakery that also brews a decent cup of coffee – plenty of brown grounds in serious quantities).  Information around this topic:  Acidity (pH): After brewing, the grounds are almost pH neutral: between 6.5 and 6.8 (higher than Hydrangeas that need a lower pH to flower blue!  Nitrogen: Just 2%; not a great deal – still need N on the soil in spring!  Other nutrients: Phosphorous, Potash, Calcium, Magnesium all in rather small amounts and Manganese, Zinc and other micronutrients also in very small quantities – certainly not an “over-dose”.  So, it looks as if these coffee grounds really don't produce a heap of “plant food”; instead, they “feed” the microbes that deliver “Glues” that are brilliant at producing great soil structure.  What about effects on plant growth? Any negative effects?  Robert Pavlis (a Canadian who writes an interesting blog called Garden Myths) led me to some publications around Testing caffeine for allelopathic effects.  The findings show that if you use huge amounts of coffee mulch it could certainly stunt the growth of bacteria, fungi, seedlings and even plants! (Does that surprise you?)  However, after 6 months the trend totally reverses, and the plants grow better than before.  And here's Julie's observation:  Since we used the grounds as “mulch”, the blackbirds (her worst enemy that toss mulch out of the garden and onto the paths) have ceased vandalising the borders and raised beds.  No more mess of ornithological origin!  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Revolution Farm and Kitchen are rethinking our food systems. This is science, flavour, community and environmental care all wrapped into one.Using spent coffee grounds collected from the University College Dublin campus, the team grows fresh oyster mushrooms in a customised, retrofitted shipping container on site. The mushrooms are then used to create ragu and chilli sauces, which are sold around Dublin. We speak to co-founder Paddy Arnold about how the project came about and where it is going. We learn how UCD have given them not just a place to work, but a stream of eager volunteers and research students, providing a science-based, data-driven approach, aiming to discover if this is a sustainable way of growing food here in Ireland. We learn how they have changed their approach several times and stayed flexible and how putting the environment first can have social and circular economic benefits for us all. Dave's challenge: Let's learn Slovene

It seems that Dave really likes the new COFFEE MACHINE - KAVNI APARAT. And he learned some handy new words as well. NAVODILO means INSTRUCTIONS, GARANCIJA is a WARRANTY, SKRIVATI is TO HIDE, KAVNA ZRNA are COFFEE BEANS and KAVNA USEDLINA is COFFEE GROUNDS. VKLOPITI is TO PLUG IN, IZKLOPITI is TO PLUG OUT, PRIŽGATI is TO TURN ON, UGASNITI is TO TURN OUT, and STIKALO is A SWITCH. We know that the coffee is great but maybe Dave should take it easy from now on or he'll start SHAKING – TRESTI SE again. Or maybe he could just try DECAF COFFEE - BREZKOFEINSKA KAVA the next time. Bellissimo!
