Ethical Seafood Research with Wasseem Emam Ep 199

I hadn't heard of Ethical Seafood Research until Wasseem Emam reached out to me, but I'm so grateful I know about it now! Drawing on his background in applied aquatic ecology, conservation, and sustainable aquaculture, Wasseem recognised a critical gap; aquatic animals are the most numerically exploited, and least protected animals in the food system.Wasseem started Ethical Seafood Research in 2021. He had an experience working on a fishing boat that fueled his need to work for the ethical fishing of aquatic animals- he tells the story better than I ever could, of course, so you'll have to listen. He talks about why it matters how fish are farmed, and we talked about the differences between wild caught and farmed fish. His goal is to improve the welfare of fish farms. Wasseem is bridging conservation and industry with practical, science based welfare improvements. The goal is not just to reduce suffering, but to demonstrate that fish welfare can — and should — be part of sustainable, resilient food systems worldwide. You can learn about Ethical Seafood Research here: https://ethicalseafoodresearch.org/Find Wasseem on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/ethicalseafoodresearch/Send me a message!Support the showLike this episode? Ocean Activist and Author Blair Northen Williamson Ep 198

Play Episode Listen Later May 12, 2026 49:06

I loved this conversation with Blair Northen Williamson, aka The Island Writer. Blair is a sailing Captain, dive instructor, ocean activist, global traveler, author and speaker, and she is talking to us about raising curious, empathetic global citizens with care and curiosity, instead of fear. Blair has published 3 children's books so far about caring for the ocean: Island Girls, Birthday Bash and Ocean Protectors, to teach kids about the ocean, and encourage them to take care of it, and all who live there. She talks about coral reefs, which are really in danger as our ocean temperatures are rising; coral bleaching happens when the temps rise and become too warm and the algae leave for cooler water. She and her husband have been diving for many years, and have raised her 2 daughters traveling and diving. They are the inspiration for the Island Girls story, after an event where they all watched a plastic bag almost get eaten, mistaken for a jellyfish. The girls asked her what she was going to do about the plastic problem, and Island Girls was born. Her newest book, Ocean Protectors, focuses on coral reefs. There is another book in process, and she is also a writing coach now!Blair suggested a documentary called Chasing Coral; I'm adding a link to watch it here if you'd like to learn more about coral reefs: https://youtu.be/aGGBGcjdjXA?si=ZU1A1GdadTT2Vr14 Blair's website is beautiful, and there is SO much more to learn about her and all she's doing, because there is only so much space in show notes! https://www.theislandwriter.com/You can follow Blair on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/theislandwriter8/Blair offers a coloring sheet to download here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ziO0RF-pdgAVQ6DYVzkXvRQ3vlNhM8mp/viewSend me a message!Support the showLike this episode? Baby Clothing Rental with Circular Mom Club's Vale Siegrist Ep 197

Play Episode Listen Later May 5, 2026 37:12

*Please forgive my echoey audio in this episode! I had cleared out my office to move, and it was - well - echoey.*Vale Siegrist won a year of Public Relations work from Publicity for Good, who has been sending some pretty great podcast guests my way lately! I was watching their contest, so curious to see who won - and while talking with Vale, she let me know it was her!Vale started Circular Mom Club after struggling post partum. One day she sent a  photo of her newborn in a cute outfit she had bought to some family and friends, and got very encouraging responses. Dressing her daughter up made her feel good, so she began buying outfits - and her daughter grew out of them quickly, of course. Vale couldn't justify continuing to buy new, and didn't want to buy super cheap and contribute to the textile waste problem, so she developed Circular Mom Club, to keep perfectly fine, cute clothes in rotation. Circular Mom Club memberships start at $29, including 5 pieces/month. I asked about clothing swaps, and her answer made so much sense after hearing her story: you don't get to choose, really, with a swap. Choice is something that has come up in several conversations I've had lately  - especially in the economy we're living in. When things are expensive, and we're told quality is better for us, but it's hard to afford - choice feels out of reach. We talked a lot about eco-guilt and guilt in general, as a parent and human.  The guilt conversation is so real, and I really appreciate Vale's vulnerability, and, of course, it fueled her need to do things right. She has really thought of everything in her planning, including gift cards, so if a parent is on the fence, maybe a family member or friend could get the process started...As someone who doesn't have children, I'm totally sold on the value of Circular Mom Club, and am so glad to have been Vale's first podcast interview, to learn all about this! You can check out the website here: https://circularmomclub.com/They're on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/circular___club/They're on TikTok here: Send me a message!Support the showLike this episode? Kefir Helps the Body Heal Itself - Elizabeth Bruckner Ep 196

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 28, 2026 76:48

I've been bugging Elizabeth Bruckner for months to come back on the podcast, because I've been listening to her other podcast guest episodes and feeling like we've been missing out, and I finally wore her down. I'm kidding - she's been wanting to go deep about Kefir with someone, and I've been interested in learning about it, and finding a fermented food I can actually ingest. And boy oh boy, did we get an education!Elizabeth was a guest in 2025 (episode 148) to talk about her book, The Homesteader Mindset, that had just published. We talked about homesteading and how you don't have to have a certain look or property to be a homesteader. Kefir is a part of Elizabeth's journey to health. She very vulnerably shares that she was bed bound for weeks, housebound for months, and unable to work for years, due to an illness.  She began to heal as she started researching herself; she is now an Oriental Medicine Practitioner and Acupuncturist. She learned about organic foods and fermented foods, among many other things. Elizabeth's message is to start small, and add on as you feel comfortable - with kefir, and homesteading, or any new habits. When talking to friends, someone asked for an easy step to take to make an impact, and her answer was quickly KEFIR. It's a really easy thing to add to your routine! I've been doing it for a few weeks now - not sure if I'm seeing benefits yet, but there definitely aren't any bad things. I have terrible eyesight, but my nose and ears make up for that - I had to trick my nose with a taste of jam or cranberry sauce with kefir to help it go down... I do like that it's not sweet - I'm not a yogurt person, because it's always very sweet (and I don't like the "tang" of plain yogurt).Access to Elizabeth's Kefir course: http://www.createwellnessproject.com/kefir - remember, use code Grounded for 25% off!Her website: https://createwellnessproject.com/Send me a message!Support the showLike this episode? Caring for Fruit Trees with Orchard People's Susan Poizner Ep 195

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 21, 2026 65:11

I was so looking forward to talking with Susan Poizner - I've heard so many times that the first thing you should do on a homestead is plant perennial fruits, so I wanted to make sure we/I know the best practices, And Susan's story about learning about fruit tree care is so incredible. Susan planted fruit trees in her city park in an empty space, only to hear from some community people that they didn't want it. She did it anyway, and created this beautiful community of education, appreciation and care for the earth - EVEN from her naysayers! The orchard transformed the park - it brought in visitors and beneficial insects and birds. She learned so much about fruit trees, and she wants to help others learn from her experience. She is an Arborist, but she says Arborists aren't taught about fruit trees, and that matters.Susan hosts a podcast, also called Orchard People, and has written 5 books (links to both are below). She is a wealth of knowledge - she is very much a WHY person, and a data person, and is so generous with her time. "Growing fruit trees is a partnership between you and the tree - when you give it the hands on care it needs, it will reward you for years to come." That's why it's recommended to start with fruit in homesteading. A little bit of the right care, and you'll have all the fruit you could ever need. She suggest doing some research in the beginning to make sure the trees you choose will grow well in your planting zone - set yourself up for success. You can check out Orchard Peoples' website: https://orchardpeople.com/Susan's podcast is here: https://podcast.orchardpeople.com/Susan's books are available here: https://learn.orchardpeople.com/books?_gl=1*972vh3*_ga*MjExNjAxNjg4MS4xNzc2MTI2NjQ1*_ga_BFBJFLTXPT*czE3NzYxMjg2NzkkbzIkZzAkdDE3NzYxMjg2NzkkajYwJGwwJGgwSend me a message!Support the showLike this episode? I got an email asking if I'd want to have a conversation with GreenFi Banking very soon after talking with Maya Lily the filmmaker, who recommended knowing that who's holding our money is in alignment with our values, so that was a really easy YES! George Mazzella is the VP of Marketing for GreenFi - he was sought out for the position by Tim, the CEO, who had worked with George before, and knows that he is passionate about climate change and leaving the world better than he found it. George has children, so he has extra motivation to make a difference. George lets us know that "our money is shaping the world whether we know it or not," and "financial institutions can drive real climate impact." One of the cool things about GreenFi is that just by spending money as we normally do can fund environmental solutions. Another? The more money we spend, the more trees they plant. GreenFi planted 3.5 Million trees in 2025! So many cool perks of banking with GreenFi! Super grateful to get to learn about it from George! There were so many great moments that it was hard to narrow them down in this conversation with Stephanie Gross, Founder of Bumby Wool! She built a sustainable fashion brand with merino wool in Canada. Stephanie is a married mom of 2, and is passionate about circular fashion, using what's already existing and her community. Bumby Wool started out in 2007 as cloth diaper covers, because the wool wicks moisture away from the skin; they now offer full clothing items for all sizes! Wool is like a smart technology, where if you're hot or cold, the wool will know how to respond accordingly. Stephanie mentions that if your size changes (like pregnancy or weight loss, etc), you can send it back to be tailored to your new size!  Stephanie and I explore themes of body positivity, individuality, and the interconnectedness of nature and humanity. We discuss the challenges of navigating change in a fast-paced world, the importance of finding clarity amidst chaos, and the celebration of personal and professional growth. She shares her innovative approaches to sustainable fashion and the shift towards meaningful gifting, emphasizing the need to empower others to pursue their passions.  She also says if you care about something, build it well and build it ethically.Check out Bumby Wool's website! https://www.bumbywool.com/ (there's an adult onesie with ears!)Find Bumby Wool on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/bumbywoolThey're on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/bumbywoolSend me a message!Support the showLike this episode? I remember hearing recently that I think it was Israel that destroyed Gaza's national seed library, which got my mind wanting to learn more about seed libraries, and why that mattered so much. I had heard of seed libraries, but I didn't know really anything about them. But Rebecca does, and now we will, too!We talked about why seed libraries are important, and why locally grown seeds and varieties are important, the difference between a seed library and a seed bank, how to find libraries, and how to start one if you don't have one near you. Man, this is such an important conversation! I feel so lucky to have Rebecca's dedication to the seed library project, and that she is sharing this important piece of preserving history and saving the future with all of us!Do you know where your local seed library is? Christa Dhimo is a New England Podcaster who I hadn't had much of a chance to get to know until I talked about my sustainability podcast in our community, and Christa, Founder of Impono - Senior Business Advisor, went full-on nerdy about DIRT. Christa hosts a podcast about business questions called Ask Christa, where people will write in whatever business questions they might have - from executive to employee and everything in between, because she's seen it all - and she answers them on the podcast, with sources and lots of notes to follow.Christa says "dirt/soil is the foundation of everything that fuels life." She reuses leaves and tired soil to make healthy soil and goes into detail about how easy and inexpensive it is, and all you can do with it. This conversation with Doug Katz went deeper than expected, but it was SO good! Doug is a retired Military Veteran who has used his disability as inspiration to create adaptive items. He just started selling the Nulu adaptive knife last summer - it's inspired by the Inuit Ulu, but adjusted to accommodate his and others' disability. Talking with Doug, I learned that there are Adaptive Libraries across the country, so that someone can try an item before buying. The conversation got deep when we went into whether a disability is really a disability, which may have gone a little off topic, but I felt like it was too important a thread to not pull on, and I'm glad we did. This is a topic that I've thought a lot about, but haven't really had the chance to vocalize, and I imagine Doug is always ready to go into it.I love Doug's entrepreneurial spirit and his inventor mind - and how he's working to extend independence for people. Here's Doug's website for Nulu Knives: https://nuluknives.com/He's on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/d.m.katzHe's on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/DOUGLASMKATZ/If you loved this ability convo and would like Doug to speak, here's his speaker link: https://dougkatz8.wixsite.com/douglasmkatzSend me a message!Support the showLike this episode? Climate Storyteller barely touches on the work that Maya Lilly has been a part of in the climate change world; she's part of the Emmy Award Winning The Years Project. She's been an activist since she was 15. She's a Producer, Speaker, and Climate Storyteller. She was named to the Grist 50 for revolutionizing Hollywood's approach to Climate Storytelling. She uses storytelling as a force for justice, empathy and real climate action. "Maya's voice remains unmistakable, credible, courageous and profoundly human." - this was taken from the Grist 50 write up of her - my eyes couldn't let go of profoundly human...I saw Maya's profile on the Podmatch site, and was so curious, but also felt intimidated by the breadth of her work. Thankfully, I was approached by her PR Rep. Maya's life is fascinating, and she has so much to share! We'd love for you to share The Years Project documentary Years of Living Dangerously with your people. This project is partnered with Hollywood actors who also want to make a difference, so they're using their celebrity to help bring these climate topics to light. I've linked a bonus segment below - there's an entire season available for free on YouTube! We also talked about things we can do to help - Maya gave a list of things, like 1) VOTING - voting in climate politicians, 2) divesting from fossil fuels and electrifying everything, 3) boycotting companies slowing or reversing progress, 4) eating more plant based, and 5) finding out if our banks are supporting causes we care aboutFollow Maya Lilly on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gunghoeco/Here's an extensive list of Maya's workHere's a clip of The Years of Living Dangerously, with my celebrity crush, Harrison Ford: https://youtu.be/wzD4Xx3drAI?si=kyRiBA1j9-rWO-zEhttps://bankforgood.org/ so we know who and what our money supports Send me a message!Support the showLike this episode? I got my 'I grew up under a rock' questions out of the way before recording to spare you, but there's still plenty to learn. There are so many things about Jacaranda that impress me, like their entrepreneurial spirit, and their scrappiness, but I absolutely love that these guys (there are 4 - we're meeting Billy and Harrison, but there's also Milo and Henry) have been friends since childhood, and they work so well together! And they have a network of entrepreneurs that they work with to keep their products hyper-local, in case there's anything they're not able to work out on their own. Because of this network, they are a full service business, offering everything in one place, instead of importing and shipping.  We talk about why hemp is the future of apparel, and why sustainable merch isn't just good for a business, it's good for the planet by not stealing from tomorrow. Jacaranda donates 3% of their profit to The Tree People. I am so impressed by the sheer number of one-liners these guys can come up with on the spot- but also their extensive education and entrepreneurship. The story of their start is fun and also inspiring, but I'll let you hear it from them.Jacaranda's website is here: https://jacarandahemp.com/They're on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/jacarandahempclothing/They're on TikTok here: https://www.tiktok.com/@jacaranda.hempSend me a message!Support the showLike this episode? I attended Chad Thompson's talk at the SOVA Rise Entrepreneur Summit last October about business planning, I didn't tell him this, but it wasn't a talk that I thought really pertained to me, since I didn't really have a business to market so to speak; something drew me to it- and I'm so glad I listened to that! Chad mentioned something about the business plan that I had never heard or even thought about before, and honestly I didn't hear much after that. I've been guilty of thinking the business plan was lame. I felt like he was speaking directly to me; I didn't quite know how I'd pitch him to be my podcast guest, or how the conversation would actually go, but I did, and he said yes. And I'm so very glad it all worked out (I took a couple of weeks to actually email him, and my email ended up in his spam), because this conversation with Chad just felt beautiful.Chad and his wife own The Book Cellar, a used book store in Abingdon, VA - their mission is to make literacy affordable, and they wanted to do things differently, and it has worked very well! Formal Dress Borrowing with Tia's Prom Closet Project's Samantha Erickson Ep 181

Let me tell you a little story about my meeting Samantha Erickson... I think she reached out to me (my Instagram name is Grounded in Maine, and she's a Maine business, so I assume that's why), and the idea of used formal dresses was such a great business plan, so I was sold, and invited her to talk about it on the podcast. When I got her podcast guest form, she said "turning grief and pain into purpose," and if you know me, I'm all in for all the deep conversations, so I couldn't wait for the chance to learn more about the story of Tia's Prom Closet Project. Tia Morrell was Samantha's best friend, and she passed away in 2024, 4 months after giving birth to her first child, Zara. Tia was a total fashion girl, and had a huge heart, not letting someone miss out on a special occasion because they didn't have the right outfit - Samantha tells the sweetest story showing this. So Samantha, Tia's mom, and a couple other of Tia's friends started Tia's Prom Closet Project - really a circular fashion goldmine, located in the small town of Harrison in southern Maine. They started 4 months ago now with 20 dresses, and 3 months later when I spoke with Samantha, they had received close to 600 donated dresses to offer folks!Samantha has so many stories about this, and the reach they've made in just a few short months shows the power of community.  I'm going to leave you with this last quote from Samantha: "This is bigger than dresses; it's about dignity. A pay it forward movement built on kindness, confidence, and connection, all in honor of an incredible soul.Every dress that leaves our racks carries more than fabric and sparkle — it carries a story, a piece of someone else's love and hope." You can find Tia's Prom Closet Project on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/tiaspromcloset/ And on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/people/Tias-Prom-Closet/61580223976310/Send me a message!Support the showLike this episode? Tom is very thoughtful and really cares about the earth and people, and that comes across very clearly. It's historic to halt the monopoly of a utility like this, and they are very happy to share why they are so passionate about helping Mainers to have other options. And don't feel left out if you're not in Maine - Our Power is in several states, and even if not, you can reach out to Our Power Maine and they'll get you in touch with someone to help.Seth and Our Power Maine are focused on transparency and energy democracy, and with good reason. He brought up the Halloween storm of 2017, and I said I started saving all the electric bills I received after that storm, because CMP sent me 3 bills in 1 month. We talked about Maine Community Power Cooperative (MCPC), and breaking the monopoly that CMP has with Maine's energy. I booked a visit with her, at least! You'll hear me fumble my way around what I thought Ayurveda was (clearly I'm wrong), but Brett's practice is absolutely fascinating to me! Did you know about Ayurveda before today?Brett's practice is located in Maine, but she offers virtual visits as well, which is how my appointment will be the day before this airs! She touched on the topic of elements, which I've never heard of (not like the table of elements), and I had too many questions to let it go - so I've got an hour and 1/2 with her to get caught up. To quote Brett: "Just as the earth is made up of natural elements, so are we." She also said this: "sustainability begins within ourselves."My takeaway: what we take into our bodies matters - it either helps or hinders, and if we understand that and take notice of our body's response, we may just have an easier go of life. That's not really new info to me, but the delivery was everything to me. I'm so looking forward to some extra time with Brett and learn about my elements, and how to live better with that info! Running for the Mountains Documentary with Babette Hogan and Julie Eisenberg Ep 174

This conversation is a little heavier than most, but it's so important to talk about. I can honestly say I knew almost nothing about West Virginia before I came across these ladies, but I can't say that anymore. Julie Eisenberg and Babette Hogan are here to talk about their first documentary together that just debuted called Running for the Mountains. "This is about politics and keeping our water and air safe, requiring political action; and keeping West Virginia safe is of national importance. "Running for the Mountains" exposes some of the toxic structure that allows the polluting of our commons. Step up and into politics!" (Babette's words)I'm not going to try to describe the film; it's too complex (Babette said it in 1 sentence, but I didn't write it down), but I can say I honestly learned a ton about the WV lifestyle and people, and the direction the political climate has been heading, and it makes me both sad and scared - and also SO proud of those who are fighting. Babette and Julie have spent a good part of the last 15 years researching, following people and stories, and filming in WV, and they have seen a lot to have strong feelings about. I didn't finish the film the first time through- I literally turned my phone OFF because I got so mad. But I was expected to finish it, so I watched again. These ladies did a wonderful job of catching so many personalities and opinions through this film that you really feel protective of the people. And they need that, and deserve that. Super grateful for this education from Julie and Babette!   You can get all the info about, and get a link to watch Running for the Mountains here: https://www.runningforthemountains.com/Their Facebook page is here: https://www.facebook.com/R4M2024/Send me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) I hope you love this conversation with Vince Aiello as much as I do! I found Vince by chance on Instagram - or maybe he found me? I forget. But I love his business Fire and Foraging, and we struck up a conversation and I invited him to talk on the podcast, and I'm SO glad I did! Vince is a nature guide in Wisconsin, and is a real pro! I learned so much - he talked about fire adaptive species and fire ecology; we talked about invasive EDIBLE plants to help plants thrive, and how humans share 80% of DNA with trees (did you know that? I sure didn't). Some of the species we discussed are dandelion, of course - how every part of the plant is beneficial, also Dames rocket and Queen Anne's Lace. Speaking of edible plants, do you recognize the mushroom on this episode's art?I also learned from Vince that there's a Mid West Wild Food conference, and that he's worked with Alexis Nikole (The Black Forager on Instagram - she's so great!) a few times!Vince says "You are nature," and his goal is for people to connect with their local environment. And he's doing that - one nature walk at a time.Vince's website is here: https://www.fireandforaging.com/Here's his Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/woods_treker/He is also a writer - here's an article of his: https://driftlessareamag.com/unicdn/2022/04/04/driftless-the-beautifully-unglaciated-area/**(the mushroom is Chicken of the Woods!)Send me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) I loved learning about Kimberly Haley Coleman and Globe Aware- an award winning short term volunteer abroad program available in 26 countries. I didn't know this was a thing, but I'm so glad it is! You can travel abroad to learn about a new place, help people and find purpose - this sounds like my kind of vacation! Tropical destinations, cooler weather, far away, or closerby, there's something for everyone. Kimberly says they can teach the kills; they just need kind, willing people, to offer short term support - solo, or as a group!Kimberly previously worked in Aerospace, and several High-level tech jobs - we talked a little bit about people sending their lost loved ones' ashes to space to be released when she mentioned it. This isn't quite as far off from her previous careers as it might sound, but I'll let Kimberly talk about that in the episode. When I asked Kimberly what message she'd like you to remember from this conversation, she said this: "It is inspiring and meaningful to engage in thoughtful service abroad" Kimberly has been working in the international field since 1990, so she's got her finger on the button of what is needed; and she is committed to everyone having a meaningful experience - on both sides of the service. You can find all things GlobeAware here: https://www.globeaware.org/They're on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/globeaware/?hl=enAnd Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/globeawareYou can see what these intentional vacations are like on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@GlobeAwareSend me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) I loved learning about Lindsey Turnbull's life in activism! I did an episode with Laura Marston of GoGo Refill way back in episode 10, I think... Anyway, it's been a while since we've talked about the cool things about refilleries. Lindsey is the owner of From Here To Home Essentials, a really cool home based refillery in Maryland and Washington DC - and she offers DELIVERY for busy folks, even! Like Laura of GoGo Refill, Lindsey is more than a shop owner - she's an educator and activist; always a "crunchy granola treehugger" are her words... Have you been to a refillery? I think they're the most fun place to try new things and get as much of something as I want - or just a sample to try something new! From Here to Home Essentials offers shipping for non-liquid items. In 2019 she applied for a 3 day boating adventure to research litter in the ocean and was surprised to be accepted, and was also surprised at what she took away from just 3 days on a boat, and that experience launched her into From Here to Home Essentials.Lindsey is very passionate about recycling  - and recycling properly, so that it's effective, and she has a lot to say about plastics - buckle up! It's important to know... I need my phone handy! What if someone can't reach me? Have you had any of those thoughts?), and we've probably all heard the phrase "loneliness epidemic," right? I've been very cureious about it--In comes Kelsey L Green - she works at the intersection of community, strategy, and accountability, helping people stop stalling and start building lives that truly light them up. She offers a free 24 hour technology free challenge twice a month - which is a great test of our focus - both of how much we're focused on technology, and how much focus on life we can have without it. When we talked, I hadn't done the challenge yet, but I've since done it - I admit I did probably 98% (I talked to my sister on the phone), but otherwise, I made it!Here's more info on the 24 hour screen free challenge here: https://www.kelseylgreen.com/screen-free-sunday-challengesShe talks a lot about Cal Newport's Digital Minimalism book - she has been studying this to grow her own practice - look for that wherever you buy/find books.Kelsey hosts an accountability mastermind called Summit in Six - here's a link to info on that - Summit in Six is a high-accountability mastermind for women creators and entrepreneurs who are done circling their ideas and are ready to make their move.Find all things Kelsey here: https://www.kelseylgreen.com/Send me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) Amanda became a member of the EDF when she was 13, so she's been training to be Executive Director for a few years!Amanda just published Sea Change: Unlikely Allies and a Success Story of Oceanic Proportions, with James Workman - it published September 30! It tells the story of how fishermen, scientists, and environmentalists set aside their distrust and their differences to forge an unlikely alliance to help solve the overfishing crisis in our oceans. It was exciting to hear her talk about it!Amanda has Maine ties, growing up in Massachusetts and visiting every summer. She has a Masters Degree in Marine Biology from UMaine, and has a very different Maine experience than I've had, so you know I loved hearing about it... She also worked as a marine mammal zookeeper!I asked Amanda to talk about what EDF does, too: they are a global nonprofit organization tackling climate change — the greatest challenge of our time. (I said Maine, not just Brunswick - Ali says they feed people from 14 out of the 16 counties in Maine!) We talked a little about the people who volunteer (over 500!) and the people receiving from MCHPP as well. We both cried a little...MCHPP opened in 1983, and has grown in strides every year; to serving 1.2 MILLION meals in 2024, and now have a professional community kitchen to offer to local businesses and a 2nd building to hold donated food, just acquired 2-3 years ago. MCHPP receives extra foods from several farmers, and Growing to Give, where I volunteered, offering their clients fresh, healthy food to add to the shelf-stable foods from grocery stores. I've delivered several times from some of the roles I've held through work and volunteering. MCHPP hosts regular fundraisers - there's an exciting one coming up on September 24th that's put on by local chefs and with donated food that's organized by Ali! Ali moved to Brunswick from NYC and Philadelphia, and in order to meet her neighbors, she started volunteering at MCHPP, and fell in love with the people she served. She is a professional private chef; her business is called Balaboosta, and she has sure made a name for herself! Keith Bearden is the CEO of Alter Eco, a sustainable chocolate company. Under his direction, Alter Eco isn't just delivering delicious chocolate and granola; it's doing so with a mission that aligns perfectly with people who are looking for better options. Keith's initiatives in regenerative farming and sustainable packaging are reaching a broad audience. Alter Eco does more than purchase from growers, they provide the plants and encourage regenerative practices, which has made a huge difference in the quality of product AND the region, as we just discussed last week with greening cities, the biodiversity makes such a difference! The trees provide some shade from the intense sun, and the lower plants keep the ground more moist for the trees - it's a beautiful symbiotic relationship where everyone benefits.Keith is very proud of the company, and talks openly about the work they do. I grabbed this from their annual Regen Report for 2024: "Regenerative agriculture has been and will continue to be a major focus for us. Our goal is to source 100% of our cacao beans and oats from farms practicing regenerative agriculture and we won't stop until we get there. We also keep an eye to ensuring everyone in our supply chain is treated fairly and receives a fair wage." He also said "We're improving the planet one chocolate bar at a time!" Don't mind if I do! Also, their wrappers are compostable - no waste! You can find Alter Eco at most grocery and health food stores, or here: https://www.alterecofoods.com/ All their socials are thereSend me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) Y'all, I hope you love this conversation with Joshua Harrison as much as I did - I was glued to what he was saying! As we talked in the middle of a hot hot summer afternoon, his plan is to cool our paved, blazing hot cities, in the simplest of ways.  He has decades of research and experience to prove it works. Joshua started asking about solar energy in the 70s (incredible story!), and never stopped! He has a center for education (the Center for Force Majeure) and is Co-Founder of a retail business (Leaf Island). He is based in NYC, and has installed several green roofs already, with great success. I just love this so much - utilizing the flat roofs in the city; growing plants or food, lowering heating and cooling costs AND bringing the neighborhood temperatures down? That sounds like a no-brainer to me - everyone wins!I grabbed this from Joshua's website about the Center for Force Majeure: "The Center for the Study of the Force Majeure brings together artists and scientists to design ecosystem-adaptation projects in critical regions around the world to respond to climate change." A Glimpse into the Produce Industry with Patrick Kelly Ep 161

I got to meet Patrick Kelly this past January at Podfest, and we talked about doing this episode then - timing was just weird, but I think maybe it was just meant to happen now... Pat is the host of The Produce Industry Podcast and also runs The Produce Industry Network, on the side of his actual produce business and family life... I've said so many times that we should know where our food comes from, and I've talked about my jam business, and how I picked my own berries to feel better about the fruit I was using, and I'm so glad to have had the chance to get from the industry that I was doing things the hard way (that's SO me). I learned so much from this conversation - Pat has been working in this industry for 25 years, and before that, he heard all about it from his dad, so he KNOWS.  He set me straight on a couple of things, and gave a good overview of what the industry is really like, and it is wild! It takes a real passion and energy to work in an unpreserved food world - always hustling to make sure food isn't wasted, and I'm glad that Pat is there! The Produce Industry Podcast is exactly what it sounds like - all things produce, which, for me, at least, is fascinating. And the network puts out 5 episodes each week, so there's something for everyone. I just finished listening to their segment on The Lewellings, which takes place in the early 1800s and involves so much US history - they had the first commercial nursery in Iowa! You'll have to listen to his podcast to hear more--You can find The Produce Industry Podcast wherever you listen to or watch podcasts, or at https://app.theproduceindustrypodcast.com/ You can find Pat on Linkedin hereOr on Instagram hereSend me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) MaryEllen Lundy has thought of everything, it seems, with An Eco-Organized Approach downsizing! It's inspiring to hear her talk about how circular her system is, from cleaning out to rehoming belongings, and everything in between. She shares a few stories that show just how much thought and care goes into her projects, which makes sense, considering she is entering someone's home and personal space, and helping them let go of things they've held tight to- it takes a very special personality to handle the deep emotional ties that some folks have to their belongings (I'm one of those people - things hold memories for me because my brain doesn't recall well without help), and gently assisting with the removal, or cleanout. MaryEllen has already put a ton of thought into a project before removing anything from the home, like what types of items can be fixed up. or repurposed, donated to a school, community program or a retirement home, or as an absolute last option is landfill. She works so hard to not have landfill be that optionWhen I asked MaryEllen about a message she hopes you'll remember, she said this: "Did you know every item in your home, in your life really…has its own lifetime? Maxx Cumby McGee has been planning the Gott Street Blues clothing brand since the 90s when she was one of a very few women in the construction world - life just delayed it. Maxx's story is both hillarious and eye opening; how she started in modeling at 19, and got into construction by making friends with the CEO of Anheuser-Busch, and showing up on her first day with a pink toolbox and men's work clothes that nearly got her injured because there were no women's work clothes. This is a longer episode, but I'll bet it goes by quicker than you expect, because Maxx is very entertaining, and this story about fashion for the workplace is fascinating! If you asked Maxx  what GottStreet Blues is about, she would say,"Clothing for women doing physical labor, clothing that was made with women in mind, getting past vanity sizing, meeting comfort with functionality and fit for women specifically." We talk about this a lot because it's been a real issue for her at work, and it affects others today, as more women are entering the trades for work. GottStreet Blues is a sustainable clothing company for women who work in the trades - or women who have trouble finding clothes that really fit (raising my hand). Maxx's message she wants you to remember: "Trust yourself, you can do anything, anytime, at any age." To Dye For documentary: https://www.todyeforthedocumentary.com/You can find Maxx's website here https://gottstreetblues.com/She's also on TikTok here https://www.tiktok.com/@maxxwell814Send me a message!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) Mary approached me as things started to feel out of hand for a lot of people, and  wanted to offer some tips to make things stretch farther and feel less scary that she's learned since starting her homestead journey. We're talking about some easy stuff, but if we focus on it, will make life feel more smooth, and gives (us at least)  a feeling of accomplishment. Mary is a podcasting machine - she puts out several episodes weekly, and has over 310 episodes of A Tiny Homestead since 2023!Mary grew up in Maine as well, but she's lived in Minnesota for many years now  - it's how we connected-You can find Mary on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/a.tiny.homestead/You can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) I told Josh Dorfman when we started talking that I felt a. little intimidated talking with him, because he is so accomplished in the sustainability field, but he has THE best stories from his life, getting him to where he is today - you're going to love this, I'm sure of it!Josh's story goes back to working for a bike company in China several years ago, but I'm not going to tell you his story, because he does it so much better- just listen, it's exciting! His mission is to show that we should be encouraged about what's happening in the world through sharing the incredible progress already underway, and I'm here for it!Today, Josh is the Podcast Host of SuperCool, shining a light on businesses that are making an impact in the sustainability area - so many wonderful folks in tech, building, government, and more. We talked about the first couple episodes I listened to, and the one that really affected me as a live music listener was R World Reuse (linked), who has partnered with U2 and Billie Eilish and more, supplying arenas and huge concert venues with reusable serve ware to save tons of waste from live events - incredible! Josh is also the Co-Founder of Plantd, a carbon negative building materials company. He's teamed up with SpaceX engineers and they are NOT using trees to build, creating a stronger product, impacting less land. The website is absolutely beautiful, and what they're doing is groundbreaking - and also an inspiring story! Check it out at:  https://www.plantdmaterials.com/Josh said when asked what sustainability means to him "to live as well as you possibly can, while enabling future generations to do the same." You can find Josh here https://getsuper.cool/ please check out the podcast - there's so much happening that we aren't aware of yet! He's most active on Linkedin here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dorfmanjosh/He's on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/getsupercoolHis YouTube channel is here: You can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!) "Sustainable living is a celebration of creativity, kindness, and the natural world in every day life" A quote from Lisa Allen of The Good Spark Shop in California, and (since we recorded this) is now rebranded as EverFar, focusing on sustainable travel essentials. She is just so inspiring when she talks about all things eco-friendly! First The Good Spark Shop, where she curated the best products around; checking ingredients and labels for you, so there's no questioning quality and origin. And now with travel essentials as EverFar; this is actually a line that she created - and making it a legit brand (launching in just a couple weeks)! Lisa is also organizing a group of like-minded folks to meet up and talk about what we can do to help the climate situation we're in. If you're interested in the group, you can find info about it and join on the website easily."Intentional, Eco-conscious choices create a ripple effect of goodness." "It's too easy to get overwhelmed - too much information, too many "shiny object" vying for our attention (and our dollars). Change starts with small. Change starts with where you are NOW, move slowly and at your own pace to where you want to be."These are both her quotes. Lisa was so easy to talk to, and just oozes service to the earth. I hope you enjoy this conversation with Lisa Allen! You can find Lisa at her website https://www.goodsparkshop.com/ which will redirect to the EverFar line once launchedLisa's Instagram is here https://www.instagram.com/goeverfar/You can send me messages(this is new!)!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here YouTube channel link is here You can DM me there or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com Website for Amy's Garden Jam is https://amysgardenjam.com/ (podcast has its own tab on this site!)
