Something I bring up a lot on this show is the importance of having a strong foundation that you are building your business upon. In past episodes, I shared about my own journey in how I chose to focus on my physical health, my mental wellbeing, and to foster successful relationships. When I chose to do these three things, my business actually took off. In today’s episode, we are talking about why we need to cultivate the best relationships; not only with others, but also with ourselves. And how these relationships can improve our business. WHO IS KAREN STANLEY? Karen Stanley is the best-selling author of Becoming Mrs. Stanley, an agency owner, and an entrepreneur based in Arizona. At the beginning of her journey, she struggled with self-worth and self-confidence until she decided to start applying her knowledge of relationships in business to her personal life. Karen believes relationships truly are the key to being successful. “You can’t be successful on an island by yourself, you need people.” But she also believes that the best way to have strong and healthy relationships with others, is to have a strong and healthy relationship with yourself. Her book came out of her personal experiences of attracting confident and strong relationships in her life, including her husband of 6 years. WHY DO WE STRUGGLE WITH SELF-WORTH? Karen learned that we develop our core beliefs during childhood. There are events that happen to us before the age of 7 that lead us to create a story around the event, which then leads us to create a core belief. EX: Abused as a child -> “I’m not worthy.” “We have to identify the beliefs and then get clear on what the facts are.” The believes that we have that aren’t true, are limiting us. It’s important to build new and empowering beliefs. BEING DILIGENT ABOUT YOUR INPUT Karen is a big believer of being very particular of the things we put into our brains. The things we watch, look at, listen to. Everything we look at and listen to matters. It’s also important to be diligent about who we follow and look up to. If someone or something is making you feel less than your best, get rid of it! We want to follow people who inspire us and who have been successful, because this inspires us to do the same. We don’t want to follow people who are faking it or haven’t actually achieved success. It’s okay to take that person off your feed! HOW TO INCREASE SELF-CONFIDENCE When Karen realized the missing piece in her life, she made time for things that in turn, increased her self-confidence and changed her life. Karen made time to work on her mindset. Karen made time for fitness. Karen made time for reading. “It’s an inside job. You’re the only one who can give yourself self-confidence.” In turn, Karen said she started to feel great, and this is truly when her business started to grow. She pinned down what was missing and decided what was important. Taking time for herself was a missing piece that led to many other things falling into place. The secret sauce is the internal work. It doesn’t happen overnight, but it’s an intentional work that pays off. FOCUS ON THE WINS Highly driven individuals are goal oriented and always making sure they get things done. Oftentimes, we may forget to take a step back and acknowledge all the things we did accomplish. One of Karen’s best strategies for herself is to focus on her wins in the morning. EX: Did I have a great conversation with ___? Did I have a great meeting with that client?” When you start to see the list of wins, we see what we have a new appreciation for the progress you’ve made. “There’s actually more dopamine released when you make progress towards the goal, than when we actually achieve it.” Karen has found that really taking time to quiet your mind and be grateful for the things you do have now, brings a joy and fulfillment that is so important to our lives. Entrepreneurs often look towards the future and the goals we want to accomplish, which is great and keeps us going, but being thankful for the right now, magnifies all the great things that come. Another simple task that Karen emphasizes is actually writing things down. Karen writes down a positive quote and her goals daily in the morning. She talks about how writing helps to slow down our brain and sets us up for success. THE SCIENCE OF HABITS Have you heard, “It takes 21 days to create a habit?” Karen shares how that’s not true. It’s a minimum of 66 days all the way up to a year. Knowing this, you can commit to doing something you know will make you successful for 90 days. (ex: a great morning routine, working out.) If you can create habits you don’t have to think about, it saves time and energy and leads to your success. The energy you no longer spend on being intentional about creating the habit, can be used to build your business or build relationships. THE IMPORTANCE OF HAVING A WHY Living every day towards purpose and intention is what helps us reach our goals. When we know exactly why we are doing something, it makes it easier to do. For Karen, she works out because she wants to be active with her grandkids. Find your why and it will lead you to choosing to do the things that make you successful. This then leads to building that self-confidence and to knowing that you are doing what’s best for your business and your clients. “When you start to believe in the work you’re doing, it makes it a lot easier to put it in front of other people.”   MORE FROM KAREN STANLEY Tune into the episode to hear more detailed strategies from Karen and personal stories that will help you feel connected to her. Hey, have you subscribed to the bookmark newsletter? A fortnightly email with book reviews and ideas of what you should be reading next. Click here to subscribe. In this episode I mention a podcast which I've recently recorded with my friend Shane Hatton, all about learning. You can find the links to listen to it here, or search Phone Calls with Clever People on your podcast player.   About the book What if everything you did was your choice, including how you spend your time, how much money you make, with whom you have relationships, and only doing work that aligns with your purpose? Sound hard? It’s as simple as changing the core question you ask yourself. When you want to accomplish something, stop asking, “How can I do this?” Legendary entrepreneur coach Dan Sullivan teaches you to ask instead, “Who can do this for me?” This question at the heart of the Who Not How philosophy may seem simple, but don’t let the lack of complexity fool you. By mastering Who Not How, you will quickly learn how billionaires and successful entrepreneurs like Dan build incredible businesses and personal freedom, along with massive success.   About the authors Dan Sullivan is the world’s foremost expert on entrepreneurship and has coached more successful entrepreneurs than anyone on the planet. He is the co-founder of Strategic Coach®, the leading entrepreneurial coaching program in the world, and author of more than 50 publications on entrepreneurial success. Over the past 30+ years, Strategic Coach has provided teaching and training to more than 20,000 entrepreneurs. Dr. Benjamin Hardy is an organizational psychologist and best-selling author of Willpower Doesn’t Work and Personality Isn’t Permanent. His blogs have been read by more than 100 million people and are featured on Forbes, Fortune, CNBC, Cheddar, Big Think, and many others. He is a regular contributor to Inc. and Psychology Today and from 2015 to 2018, he was the #1 writer—in the world—on Medium.com. https://whonothow.com/   Big Idea #1 - Who not how  Essentially, this is a book about delegation. Most of us, when faced with a challenge, ask ourselves, how will I do this? Whether it's fixing our website planning meals for the week or booking a trip. But instead of asking how we should really be asking who. Because there is likely someone out there who can do it better, faster with less stress, more scale, and potentially cheaper, than we could do it ourselves. This book itself is actually a who not how project. Benjamin Hardy saw Dan Sullivan speak about this concept at an event and Benjamin decided he wanted to write the book on it. He asked Dan and Dan let him. Having this mindset of who not, how, as a default, allows you to create bigger things than you could do alone and focus on doing other things, which are maybe the things that you are better at. Ultimately, it comes down to putting results above effort and working on tasks where you can get the better outcome, rather than necessarily where you can put the most effort in.   Big idea #2 - Let the who do the how For this to work, you need to let the who do the how. That's why they're there in the first place. You need to get out of their way and give them permission to do what it is that they do best. Your role in the relationship is to set the vision. Dan actually uses something called an ‘impact filter’, this document covers why the particular project or the task is important, what the success criteria would look like, what's at stake, and what could go wrong or any potential problems that might come up. The book suggests looking at your goals for the next 90 days and running a ‘who audit’ over them. Ask yourself who can help you achieve those goals? You could even do this on a weekly, or even a daily basis, using your to-do list and asking yourself who can help you.   PS. Consider supporting the podcast with your next book purchase. Save the Steph’s Business Bookshelf affiliate stores for Book Depository (Global) or Bookshop.org (US) in your browser.   Big idea #3 - Freedom Freedom is one of the core ideas in the book. The book is structured around the four types of freedom you can access when you use this, who not how approach. The four types of freedom are; Time - if you're not doing something you free up your time to do other things. Money - yes, finding someone else to do those particular things might cost you money but you’re entering a different value exchange, as you’ll free up your time to create more money by focusing on higher value activities Relationship - you can create transformational relationships by being a who to other people, as well and finding good who's for yourself. You can then foster those relationships so that everyone ends up doing the work that is most valuable to them and allows them to operate at their best. Purpose - this allows you to do the bigger things you might want to do in life that maybe won't happen otherwise, because you don't have the skills or the time or the resources to do it. There was a great example of freedom of purpose in the book. A lady called Karen wanted to write her grandmother's biography. This was something that had been on her life to do list for a long time. Her grandmother was an important civil rights activist in the 1920s and actually helped get certain segregation laws changed in the USA. For Karen, this was a really important and very personal project. Karen had started the book, had written some pages but had realised that writing a biography is almost like a full-time job in itself to do it well, especially if you are not an accomplished biographer. Karen had her own very busy job and therefore this biography wasn’t going very far, very fast. Funnily enough, Karen was approached by another person who also wanted to research and write a book about Karen's grandmother. This person was researching African-American civil rights activists and had come across Karen's grandmother's details and wanted Karen's help in writing the book. Karen's initial response was one of threat. She wanted to the one to write the book about her grandmother, and saw this other woman as competition.  However, after conversation with Benjamin, Karen realised that a collaboration with this biographer could actually mean the book got written. And likely to a higher quality, because the other person was an accomplished biographer and had published books previously. She realised that the purpose was sharing her grandmother’s story, not writing the book herself.   Let’s connect LinkedIn Instagram See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Our guest today is Karen Randhawa, a student at Osgoode. Karen was a mentee of Felicity's in her first year. Karen knew from grade 4 that she wanted to be lawyer; more relevant, she knew from her undergraduate days that she wanted to do tax law. That's why we had her on the show -- while some people take a long time to know what they want to do in life (read: Felicity) others are dead sure early on. For Karen, the only question is whether she will do transactional tax work or tax litigation. We all agree that it's okay to be either type but no matter what, it isn't a bad thing to keep your options open.   Links:   Legally Brown: https://legally-brown.weebly.com/ Legally Brown Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/legallybrownlaw/ WLGTDWI Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/whatslawgottodowithit/   Music Attribution: What's Love Got to Do With It by Tina Turner Soundcloud: What's Love Got to Do with It

Why Working Through Ancestral Trauma Is the Key To Healing w/ Karen M. Rose

As a society, we’ve lost much of the healing knowledge that our ancestors held. With that loss, combined with corporate greed, has come a fear of herbal medicine. Karen M. Rose joins me to talk about how the Divine Feminine is rising, ancient medicine is finally coming back, and why you need to heal your spirit. Karen says we need to rediscover how to trust ourselves, unlearning all the years of corporate propaganda that have been embedded into our minds. When we’re ready to expand ourselves, we will feel more comfortable exploring ancient medicines as an alternative to modern, and in my opinion last resort, medicines. Regardless of where your medicine comes from, true healing comes from within yourself. And with the global rise of the Divine Feminine, we’re seeing mass healing on a bigger scale than ever before. But for many women, especially black women, we need to deal with ancestral trauma that’s been passed down through our lineage. What modern medicine is missing is the language of wellness. Modern medicine treats the symptoms but it doesn’t look at the root cause or the health of your spirit. We’ve truly disconnected from the spirit of the earth and are only now finding our way back. Karen believes that we all need to celebrate and feel our joy every single day. Even when you’re fighting the good fight, sad about the state of the world, or whatever other negative emotions are swirling around in you. When you embrace joy, you embrace life… and you should always strive to be that calming and joyful model for others, as Karen is every day. For Karen, our spirit is the most important aspect of ourselves to heal. There is a connection between illness and spirit; you can’t heal only one, and you might find that when you’re healing your spirit, you’re also healing your illness and trauma. How are you finding and celebrating joy every day? How have you connected to your spirit today? I’d love if you shared your thoughts in the comments on the episode page.   In This Episode: Why we’ve developed a fear of herbal medicine Where healing comes from How the emergence of the Divine Feminine is healing the world What does it look like to have ancestral trauma in your lineage How modern medicine has ignored the language of wellness Why you need to stay connected to joy, especially through difficult times How you can be a model for joy and relaxation for others What the connection between illness and spirit is How you can show up in both your trauma and your joy   Quotes: “I find that our language in the West is designed to create a separation between ancient medicine and people. So, of course, if we think of it as something alternative or something that is next to normal, we have a harder time using it.” (6:34) “The more healed you become the more you see what you need to heal.” (15:22) “We’re going to delve into all the ways in which plants work in this body but also all the ways in which plants work in the spirit. They cannot be separated from what’s going on around you spiritually and emotionally.” (41:26)   Links Find the full episode post here Find Karen M. Rose Online Follow Karen M. Hello and welcome to episode 14 of Prompted by Nature. And today is the final episode of this series. I'm now in the process of interviewing new voices and am so excited about what's to come this year. Next week will be a solo episode from me summing up everything I've learnt from this series' guests, where things are now and a hint at what's to come. But that's for next week! So back to today's episode. Today you'll be hearing from he lovely Karen Collins of Scotland-based weaving and natural arts company, Naturally Useful. Naturally Useful is based at the Pole Barn, Marcassie Farm, a family-owned organic small holding nestled in the fertile plains of the Laich of Moray in north-east Scotland. Karen's has a passion for using materials that are locally-sourced or grown by herself using her own willow, which she grows on her own acre of land. Karen grows 25 different varities or willow and grows plants for plant dying. She also sources wool from local farmers which she uses in her non-skin rugs and tapestries. Karen is inspired by the land and gathering and sourcing her materials from the space around her, to then transform into beautiful, useful products that enrich people's homes and enliven their souls. Karen uses her skills to teach and empower others through her gap year program and ongoing courses, which she runs at her workshop. She says that all anything takes is practice, practice, practice. For Karen, making is a meditation and as she says in the episode, when her hands are busy, her mind is still. She believes firmly that ‘learning by doing' is a fundamental path to self expression and that through creative engagement in a task, we both connect to oneself, the natural world and the finished product developing confidence in ourselves. In this episode, we discuss: Karen's background in fashion design and how she came to found Naturally Useful Her workshop and living space in North-East Scotland Her passion for supporting local makers through natural crafts The effect that lockdown has had on her business Coffin and shroud-making and end of life care The beauty of imperfections Her gap year program and the importance of passing on skills that will empower others to create their own products What her creativity and her connection to nature means to her What her journey has taught her and what she'd like to pass on I first found Karen on Etsy, when I was looking to treat myself to a handmade wicker basket for my bike (I have my son behind me so it's easier than trying not to hit him in the face with my bag constantly). I was enamoured by the fact that Karen grows all the willow she uses just outside her own front door and hand-weaves them herself and so was thrilled when she agreed to be on the podcast. You can find Karen on her website www.naturallyuseful.co.uk. The shop link there will take you through to her beautiful Etsy shop, which you can also find by searching ‘Naturally Useful' on etsy.com and is full of hand-woven treasures like the hanging baskets Karen speaks about, urns, hand baskets (for all your foraging needs!), bike baskets like mine and lots more! You can also find her on Instagram and Facebook @naturallyuseful As always, you can find me over on Instagram @prompted.by.nature or on my website www.promptedbynature.co.uk And if you enjoy this or any of my other episodes, please do give it a five-star review and leave a comment if you have time. Remember to stick around until the end, when I'll give you a little insight into the meditation and writing prompt that follows this episode. Enjoy the conversation and I'll speak to you after.

For Karen and Carmin some of the dichos or beliefs that their Latin parents had about money were taken as fact as they grew up and impacted how they handled money and even interactions with co-workers. In this episode we introduce an amazing book written by a Mexican American Author - Louis Barajas, " The Latino Journey to Financial Greatness: 10 Steps to Creating Wealth and Happiness for You and Your Family"Barajas witnessed first hand the barriers that Latinos have when it comes to money. He went back to his home town of Boyle Heights which is prominently Latino in hopes of helping everyone become financial stable but cultural beliefs became barriers so that he can help. These are the same barriers that Karen and Carmin can correlate back to the dichos they grew up with. Grab some Cafecito and enjoy this episode with us! -xo

Karen is sharing time-saving hacks galore today on episode 13 of Empowering Women in Real Estate, the Podcast! Thanks for tuning in! First, we've got to understand that saying "yes" to something means saying "no" to something else. We make these choices subconsciously sometimes so let's get on top of it! Karen teaches us how to identify our high value activities and how to eliminate our low value activities. Her process for assessing our time commitments is fantastic! It's true: there are certain things that only you can do. For Karen those things are that she wants to do her own client outreach and she also really values being the one who gets to drive her kids to school and talk to them in the car. The other things... let's streamline the other things.  Hiring services to help you, especially in the busy season, may seem like an unnecessary expense, but stop to consider whether you can actually recoup the income working at what you do best! Cooking, cleaning, laundry and landscaping are a few examples. If you can't afford it in your business right now, find routines around these activities and you'll still add efficiency to your day! This next tip is the real deal: Clean out your closet! You'll save so much time getting ready in the morning if your closet is full of clothes that fit and look good as opposed to having all of your favorite articles hidden under other things. Another great trick is to use recurring timers and alarms on your phone to help you unburden your brain from constantly watching the clock and trying to remember everything. Karen received her undergraduate degree in Communication from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. She is also a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist through the Grief Recovery Institute in Los Angeles, California. Key Points from the Episode with Karen Millsap: Karen is a resilience and mindset coach, and everything she teaches came from the things she used in her own journey. Everything boils down to the power of choice for her, and how we all have this great power. We can either be a monster and do great evil, or make the choice to use our power for good. She clarified the difference between choice and control – we cannot control everything, but our choice is about how we respond to what we face. She learned this lesson the hard when when she lost her husband when she was 29. “Lost” isn’t quite the right word for it, though. Her husband had just opened a cross-fit gym, and was at work one afternoon while Karen had their son while she worked from home. While on a call for work, she kept getting a call from a member of their gym. She finally took the call, and was not expecting what she heard. On the other end of the call was screaming and chaos, and one word Karen could make out, “Shot.” On her way to the gym, Karen had a thought of why she wasn’t meeting her husband at the hospital. Wouldn’t he be rushed there if he had been shot? She soon found out why – her husband’s life couldn’t be saved and he had already died. The first year was so difficult, it was hard enough just to get out of bed each day, let alone care for their son or work. On that day her husband had been shot, the police informed her that she would have to call someone to clean up the scene, which is mind-blowing. Her pastor immediately said she shouldn’t worry about it and he would take care of it. That act of support was so crucial in helping her see that there is still good. It also showed Karen the difference between empathy and compassion. Empathy is understanding or comprehension, while compassion is about stepping in and trying to do something for the person to help take some of their pain. As she started to go back to work, she saw how the ability to have the conversation about how we put our arms around each other and have the permission to be human, we’ll all be more productive, loyal and healthier humans. We talked about Google’s Project Aristotle, which looked at the difference between high and low performing teams, and found that the driver is empathy. The way we get better at taking care of others is We taking care of ourselves better. Resilience and mindset translates to so many situations where we have to serve others because, as Karen says, “When we are all our best selves, we are all winning.” We touched on helping a child through grief, something Karen had to deal with in supporting her son after he lost his father. She found that she could only help him by working through her own grief. The tools she used, the way she handled it – all of that translated to her ability and toolkit to help him. We talked about whether you can cry in front of your children in a situation like this, and she learned that he needed to learn that it’s ok to show your emotions. Honor your emotions to choose how to move forward. We talked a lot about Karen’s feeling of shame of her grief or her fear of being a burden to her family, who had their own grief to deal with. The more we suppress how we’re feeling, the more likely our pain is going to manifest in unhealthy ways. By default, in so many situations, we tend to go to a negative space, including negative self-talk. Part of this is driven by how asking for help is seen as a sign of weakness. If we show empathy, people will see it as safer to ask for help. Asking for also increases trust, so the impact to an organization (or group or family) of empathy, honesty about the need for help and less negative (or more positive) self-talk is more trust. We talked about forgive and what it really is, and whether you truly need to forgive. Karen sees forgiveness as a choice rather than a feeling, and she found herself not interested in feeling forgiveness for this man who took her husband’s life. As she struggled with the idea of forgiveness, she saw the movie, The Shack, which is based on a book people told her to read that she never did. It helped her understand the state people are in when they do heinous things, which opened up a kind of compassion in her she hadn’t been able to feel. And even though she didn’t want to feel it, she couldn’t help it. It showed her about acceptance, which is more about recognizing the starting point you are at now rather than dwelling on where you were. For Karen, while forgiveness is an act of compassion for the other person, it is also an act of compassion for you. You may struggle with the balance of those two things, which can make it hard to feel true forgiveness. Karen created the methodology she calls “Stop & Shift” STOP: Silence Thoughts On Purpose - you can disconnect yourself from the thoughts swarming in your mind so you can bring yourself to present SHIFT: See Hope, Intentions, Facts & new Thoughts - at any point in any situation, you can look at one of these three things to find new thoughts. E54: Ideas to Make You Become from Wannapreneur to Entrepreneur with Karen Greve Young of Futurpreneur

Karen Greve Young is the Chief Executive Officer of Futurpreneur Canada, Canada’s only national organization dedicated to supporting young entrepreneurs. Futurpreneur’s unique model combines funding, mentorship and start-up programs to fuel the success of thousands of young entrepreneurs in every Canadian province and territory. Karen is an accomplished non-profit leader dedicated to fostering economic and social prosperity through new approaches and partnerships.   How did the birth of Futurpreneur Canada come about?   When Futurpreneur Canada started two decades ago before Karen even lives in Canada, there really wasn't an ecosystem for startup founders. On an event, an entrepreneur started with a blank canvas or a blank landscape without whole lot of support and in response to that a group of Canadians; that was started by a Canadian members of industry and then supported by the federal government, got the idea of providing collateral free low interest loans to entrepreneurs. Futurpreneur realize that money is an important part particularly for young entrepreneur especially if they don’t have other equity and access to funds there business. Another part that is important for Futurpreneur is its mentorship. They also make sure that the entrepreneurs also get a mentor, a guide and the support of an individual to help them on their journey and that has always been part of the motto of Futurpreneur. Futurpreneur financing, mentorship and its tools to help support these entrepreneurs from ages 18 to 39 so that they can use these in order to start their business. It is also the only organization supporting entrepreneurs that does this in every province and territory in Canada. What matters to them is an entrepreneur who is young, has an idea or a business model and can use the mentorship that they provide in order to bring the business idea to reality.   Karen talks about the entrepreneur journey and how they work to support it:   Entrepreneur starts with passion. They start with an idea and goal of what they want to achieve and pretty quickly they realize that they needed fuels (funds) to achieve this to get their ideas down in writing and to plan it out to get the resources they need. And often they need the confidence to actually start.   What excites Karen most about this industry:   "From wannapreneur to entrepreneur"   Entrepreneur is the umbrella term for people starting a business but obviously there are many types of entrepreneurs. What Karen is really excited about as being a part of Futurpreneur is the scope of all the main street businesses in Canada. That means Canadian from smaller towns can come back to their hometown after college and have a vibrant job opportunities just like on the large city without having to go to a large city. It is really important that they focus on opportunities that are broader, rural and urban, and for the whole diverse range of people whether they are doing it part time with the side hustle or full time.   The biggest entrepreneurial mistake that Karen see from time to time:   It takes a certain amount of confidence start a business You need to have confidence to yourself and your business but should not reach arrogance or hubris. As soon as an entrepreneur stops listening to people who disagree with her or with him; that is a recipe for disaster. Having a mentor or advisers or talking to your customers who you know will say something straight given what is not what you want to hear is vital. Karen also shared with us how this situation could lead to becoming a confident blocker. Listen to my episode Ariel Garten from Muse - episode 45 where we dive in through what confident blockers do to you and what you should do to stop it. "Invite people with different opinions"   Marketing/Entrepreneur Tips:   Sometimes we focus too much on the messages that we want to get out that we as humans we put things in what we want to convey rather than what we want them to hear and feel. So always keep your customers in mind and focusing on what's in it for them and what are they looking for from what you are doing and REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT. "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago and the second best time is today" – Chinese Proverb   Favorite Habit that made her say wow she was a part of:   Getting out of the field and visiting their team around the country. One specific experience that Karen had was being in Halifax visiting the House of Auto Details which is an auto detailing company; a female founded who has found a gap in the industry and several years later is still going strong. The very next day, she met Nathon Kong is a Montreal-based company creating bespoke custom-tailored suits with the help of a 3D scanner which is made by local artists and some of it are done by patients from the local mental health facilities. "You are trying to embark on a new path there is no better time than now" Personal Habit:   For Karen, it is all about how she starts her day early in the morning and do workouts and journaling and get things done. The last thing that she will do before getting her kids ready is she Muse headband for about 3 to 10 minutes. She uses her Muse headband to meditate, be mindful and set herself up for the day she wants to have. Karen Chaston was CFO of an Australian publicly listed company, so you would think that life would be pretty sweet. After all, isn’t rising to the top in your chosen field, what defines you as being successful? Many people think it is. For Karen, the constant effort of juggling work, family, the big house and cars, and the stress was taking its toll on her even before tragedy struck when her son unexpectedly and suddenly died at a young age. After a break, Karen went straight back to work, working more, eating more and drinking even more, just to get through her very long days. It took another 15 months when she chose redundancy, which allowed Karen to ‘wake up’ and take a long conscious loving breath. One that allowed her to sit back and evaluate exactly where she was in life and where she wanted to be - a good life lesson for anyone suffering stress and doing tasks they don’t enjoy doing.  By learning new concepts, slowly her awareness changed, and Karen realised not only how diseased she was, the horrible part was, all her corporate peers were the same. They all were dog-eat-dog, in survival mode where it truly was survival of the fittest, though physically, none were physically fit. Finally, by listening to her inner knowing that the ‘Live Love By Design’ brand was founded, with Karen creating online and off-line courses, trainings and writing paperback and e-books. 023 Karen Stevens–Fundraising Events Event Coordinator—aka Fundraising Extraordinaire and Community Volunteer Not everyone enjoys coordinating events, but Karen Stevens does. From an early age organizing a party seemed to be in her DNA. Her earliest memory, around the age of six, was creating her mother’s birthday party at one of her mother’s friend’s home and wrapping presents (which she found in her mother’s vanity drawer) as birthday gifts. On another occasion, realizing her younger sister didn’t have an “appropriate” birthday cake, she created a drum cake for her party. Who would have ever guessed these would be preparation for her passion? Karen is no stranger to the non-profit world. Helping organizations increase revenue is her way of making a difference. From Vanderbilt University School of Nursing to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Magdalene, Habitat for Humanity, Siloam Family Health Center, Room in the Inn, Nations Ministry Center, Luke 14:12, and Music for the Soul, she has helped increase their financial support by “throwing a party”! The one-hour free-ask event is a favorite. When CEOs, boards of directors, and volunteers embrace the concept, the work begins. Karen guides them through a series of steps, coordinates data keeping, and manages venue details. She creates a great opportunity for organizations—many of which don’t have a development person on staff—not only to increase revenue and grow their volunteer base, but also to educate guests about the nonprofit’s mission and impact in the community. Needless to say—a win/win for everyone! For Karen, volunteering in the community is the norm. No perimeters. Seeing a need is the only criteria. No excuse for not having enough to keep busy.
