The federal government recently announced a $2.4 billion dollar investment in artificial intelligence. It includes money earmarked to accelerate the adoption of AI in sectors as far flung as health care and agriculture. The feds say this will help to 'secure Canada's AI advantage." But does Canada even have an advantage in AI compared to our neighbors? Are Canadian companies and industries doing enough to embrace this technology? And is there a potential downside if we embrace AI too quickly? For insight, we welcome: Ajay Agrawal, the Geoffrey Taber Chair in Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the U of T's Rotman School of Management, and Faculty Affiliate at the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence; Krista Jones, Chief Delivery Officer at the MaRS Discovery District; andKristina McElheran, assistant professor of Strategic Management at the University of Toronto Scarborough, and Rotman School of Management.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Innovative green technology is critical for driving environmental resilience and economic growth — though this tech is no stranger to obstacles. Cleantech faces challenges and persistent barriers and having a diverse ecosystem — including entrepreneurs and investors — that encourages innovation and provides access to capital is critical to scale and market acceptance. This also means women and individuals from underrepresented communities need to be part of the solution. This episode is a roundtable cohosted with Alison Nankivell, the incoming CEO of MaRS Discovery District, North America's largest urban innovation hub and a nonprofit that provides support for startups. We're joined by three women on the frontlines of Canadian cleantech; Myra Arshad of ALT TEX; Natalie Ashdown of Evoco and; Jacqueline Hutchings of Friendlier.

This podcast is about big ideas on how technology is making life better for people with vision loss. Today's big idea is how the technology used in instruments that extend human vision to space is being relied on by vision technology developers in devices that help people with vision loss in everyday tasks here on Earth. Using substitute senses has allowed scientists across many fields to continue their work without the use of sight. The eSight is one such device that stimulates the remaining functioning vision to improve the quality of life for users. Dr. Roberts speaks with Charles Lim about the development of the device, the principles behind how it works, and the motivation for future improvements. The Big Takeaways: Astronomers and other scientists who are blind can continue to make meaningful contributions to their field by using substitute senses — even discovering things unseen to the human eye — especially in fields where instruments do most of the heavy lifting. eSight is designed to help people with low vision; they've found that with the right stimuli, they can leverage the dormant portions of the eye that still have some function. It is a wearable and mobile device that maximizes the visual information provided to the brain to naturally compensate for gaps in the user's vision. As they continue to develop the device, some of the most important factors are making sure it's comfortable, accessible for a wide range of wearers, has a long battery life, and is future-proof. The ability to possibly change individual lives, and to create a more accessible world, is one of the most motivating reasons behind this technology advancement and continues to drive the developments that are on the horizon for eSight. Tweetables: “What it all means is how do we leverage the technology advances in cameras, image, sensors, and processing to allow...our users to enhance their vision through more information.” - Charles Lim, Chief Technology Officer, eSight “What we did is that we converted into sound data from a gamma-ray burst. We were able to listen to small variations in the data that were not visible to the human eye.” — Dr. Wanda Diaz Merced, Astronomer “Astronomers have realized that you can learn a lot about the Universe by developing instruments that can be extensions of our own senses.” — Dr. Bernard Beck-Winchatz, Astrophysicist “I dream of a future where eSight can really become a natural extension of our users' vision.” — Dr. Charles Lim Contact Us: Contact us at podcasts@lighthouseguild.org with your innovative new technology ideas for people with vision loss. Entrepreneurship is on the rise, as more and more people seek meaning and control over their work. But figuring out what, exactly, they want to do and how, exactly, they want to do it can be one of the toughest parts of building a new business. Stories can help - by giving new entrepreneurs the clarity, confidence and courage they need to succeed. And that's what I explore in this episode with Karen Greve Young. Karen's the CEO of Futurpreneur Canada, the only national non-profit organization in the country that's dedicated to supporting young entrepreneurs age 18-39. Futurpreneur’s unique model combines loan financing, mentorship and other resources to fuel the success of thousands of young entrepreneurs in every Canadian province and territory. Before joining Futurpreneur, Karen worked in leadership roles at non-profits around the globe, most recently serving as the Vice President of Corporate Development & Partnerships at MaRS Discovery District, a global innovation hub based in Toronto. Karen shares stories of how they help entrepreneurs use their own stories to shape and grow their businesses, through processes ranging from business model design to mentoring. She also tells us how Futurpreneur has stepped up its own storytelling, sharing entrepreneurs' stories across staff, partners and the board to strengthen connections to the purpose and people they serve. As a result, they've tripled their employee engagement in less than three years. Plus, we explore the role entrepreneurs play in helping communities create, share and deepen the stories that bring them together, by developing places and experiences where everyone can support shared values. Join us to hear the incredible stories of entrepreneurs like Devon Fiddler, who started SheNative accessories to employ and support Indigenous women, and Mai Eilia, a refugee who started home-building business Magnum Construction to create employment for other refugees – and find out more about how you can use stories to grow your business today.

The Shad Canada summer program is a very special and unique learning experience. Talented high school students interested in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) and entrepreneurship go through a rigorous selection process to spend a summer at one of Canada's 20 participating universities. Throughout the summer the students spend time with professors at that university, learning topics and working on projects that are at a university level. Following their month-long university experience, the students spend a month working at the company that sponsored them, gaining valuable work experience in their field. But the experience is so much more than valuable academic and work experience. Many students form life long friendships, have life changing mentorships from the professors and professionals they work with, and the experience has a significant impact on their future career trajectory. I was lucky enough to attend Shad when I was in grade 11 and I worked for a medical tech company where the head of R&D took me under her wing for the summer. The experience had a very significant impact on the start of my career and my confidence. The Shad learning experience is truly unique and deeply impactful. I'm thrilled to be joined by the President of Shad Canada to discuss what makes this learning experience so special. Tim Jackson is the President and CEO of Shad Canada. Tim has an extensive background as an entrepreneur, business and not-for-profit leader. He has served as CEO of the Accelerator Centre, an incubator for technology startups, Vice President at the University of Waterloo and Executive Vice-President at the MaRS Discovery District, one of the world's largest urban innovation hubs. He co-founded Tech Capital Partners, an early-stage venture capital firm, and served as CFO and CEO at Waterloo-based technology firm, PixStream (sold to Cisco Systems). Tim has also chaired several boards boards and has co-founded two charitable organizations. Tim Jackson: https://www.shad.ca/national-team/tim-jackson/ Shad Canada: https://www.shad.ca/

Where to set up Shop in Canada You can get anything here you can in Silicon Valley and all over the US. Ishu Sing, Host “Starting to know business” Media Exchange This is the first media exchange we are doing. We talk with Ishu Sing (Website, LinkedIn), founder of the Toronto based podcast Starting to Know Business (iTunes, Listen Notes). We thought it would be great to look at the respective countries. So, in this audio-only cooperation, we will talk about where to look if you want to evaluate entering Canada, as a startup based abroad. In his part of the cooperation, we will talk about the diversity of Germany and that there is no default choice for setting up shop in the country as well. Strong and interesting startups are all over Canada. Ishu Sing, Host “Starting to know business” Canada Canada is a G7 nation and should be on the list for international expansion for every aspiring startup. Ishu Sing, Host “Starting to know business” Startup Hubs in Canada I feel that right now the startups in Toronto are developing a bit faster than Vancouver … Toronto is growing very very strong. Ishu Sing, Host “Starting to know business” Toronto We start with the largest city by population and the home town of Ishu, Toronto (https://www.toronto.ca/). Much of the startup activity is here concentrated in the so-called MaRs Discovery District. MaRs was originally founded in 2000 to commercialize public-funded research with local companies. You can learn more here: https://www.marsdd.com/ Montreal is coming up with lots of strong tech startups as well. Ishu Sing, Host “Starting to know business” Montreal The second-largest city in Canada, also close to the US border. This city is home to the French-speaking population of Canada, French Canadians. A knowledge of French is not required, but helpful. You can learn more about the startup scene in the city here: https://www.bonjourstartupmtl.ca/en/ as well as find some examples of Montreal based startups here: https://builtinmtl.com/. Vancouver Vancouver is located on the pacific coast of Canada. They have been one of the first tech hubs in Canada. They are also close to Seattle, with the headquarters of Amazon and Microsoft. You can learn more about the local startup scene on the Vancouver based blog https://techcouver.com/ Calgary A few people may remember Calgary from the Olympic Winter Games in 2010. If not, it is located to the north of the population centers in Canada, in the Rocky Mountains. Note that the city is even for Canada a bit on the chilly side. The focus of the city is mostly on energy like fossil fuels and mining/drilling business. You can learn more about the local startup scene here https://www.startupcalgary.ca/ Honorary Mention Waterloo (close to Toronto) Waterloo is a smaller city very close to Toronto and relative to its population (just above 100.000) it is punching above its weight as a startup hub. Karen Greve Young is the Chief Executive Officer of Futurpreneur Canada, Canada’s only national organization dedicated to supporting young entrepreneurs. Futurpreneur’s unique model combines funding, mentorship and start-up programs to fuel the success of thousands of young entrepreneurs in every Canadian province and territory. Karen is an accomplished non-profit leader dedicated to fostering economic and social prosperity through new approaches and partnerships. How did the birth of Futurpreneur Canada come about? When Futurpreneur Canada started two decades ago before Karen even lives in Canada, there really wasn't an ecosystem for startup founders. On an event, an entrepreneur started with a blank canvas or a blank landscape without whole lot of support and in response to that a group of Canadians; that was started by a Canadian members of industry and then supported by the federal government, got the idea of providing collateral free low interest loans to entrepreneurs. Futurpreneur realize that money is an important part particularly for young entrepreneur especially if they don’t have other equity and access to funds there business. Another part that is important for Futurpreneur is its mentorship. They also make sure that the entrepreneurs also get a mentor, a guide and the support of an individual to help them on their journey and that has always been part of the motto of Futurpreneur. Futurpreneur financing, mentorship and its tools to help support these entrepreneurs from ages 18 to 39 so that they can use these in order to start their business. It is also the only organization supporting entrepreneurs that does this in every province and territory in Canada. What matters to them is an entrepreneur who is young, has an idea or a business model and can use the mentorship that they provide in order to bring the business idea to reality. Karen talks about the entrepreneur journey and how they work to support it: Entrepreneur starts with passion. They start with an idea and goal of what they want to achieve and pretty quickly they realize that they needed fuels (funds) to achieve this to get their ideas down in writing and to plan it out to get the resources they need. And often they need the confidence to actually start. What excites Karen most about this industry: "From wannapreneur to entrepreneur" Entrepreneur is the umbrella term for people starting a business but obviously there are many types of entrepreneurs. What Karen is really excited about as being a part of Futurpreneur is the scope of all the main street businesses in Canada. That means Canadian from smaller towns can come back to their hometown after college and have a vibrant job opportunities just like on the large city without having to go to a large city. It is really important that they focus on opportunities that are broader, rural and urban, and for the whole diverse range of people whether they are doing it part time with the side hustle or full time. The biggest entrepreneurial mistake that Karen see from time to time: It takes a certain amount of confidence start a business You need to have confidence to yourself and your business but should not reach arrogance or hubris. As soon as an entrepreneur stops listening to people who disagree with her or with him; that is a recipe for disaster. Having a mentor or advisers or talking to your customers who you know will say something straight given what is not what you want to hear is vital. Karen also shared with us how this situation could lead to becoming a confident blocker. Listen to my episode Ariel Garten from Muse - episode 45 where we dive in through what confident blockers do to you and what you should do to stop it. "Invite people with different opinions" Marketing/Entrepreneur Tips: Sometimes we focus too much on the messages that we want to get out that we as humans we put things in what we want to convey rather than what we want them to hear and feel. So always keep your customers in mind and focusing on what's in it for them and what are they looking for from what you are doing and REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT. "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago and the second best time is today" – Chinese Proverb Favorite Habit that made her say wow she was a part of: Getting out of the field and visiting their team around the country. One specific experience that Karen had was being in Halifax visiting the House of Auto Details which is an auto detailing company; a female founded who has found a gap in the industry and several years later is still going strong. The very next day, she met Nathon Kong is a Montreal-based company creating bespoke custom-tailored suits with the help of a 3D scanner which is made by local artists and some of it are done by patients from the local mental health facilities. "You are trying to embark on a new path there is no better time than now" Personal Habit: For Karen, it is all about how she starts her day early in the morning and do workouts and journaling and get things done. The last thing that she will do before getting her kids ready is she Muse headband for about 3 to 10 minutes. She uses her Muse headband to meditate, be mindful and set herself up for the day she wants to have. Join in for a conversation with Lucas Perlman, International Partnership Manager at MaRS Discovery District. I've had a lot of friends in the professional services field like accounting, consulting and finance tell me about how they want to do work that is more impactful and meaningful to them. Some have even told me about wanting to take some time off to go on a trip to a developing country to help out the local businesses there. Well, today's guest did just that. Lucas left audit to go help out local businesses in Tanzania through a corporation called Anza, which is practically the Mars discovery district of Tanzania. We go through the decision making process he had in taking the leap, the value of taking career risks earlier on and what he does in his new business development role at MaRS. For those who want to try something similar to what Lucas did he discusses a partnership program you can take part in over a 3 month period and he has also given me links to other programs he wanted to share with you. I've included these links in the shownotes so check them out after listening to the interview. So without further adieu here is my conversation with Lucas.

What we really have is a fundamental disequilibrium between the demand for health services by a population that’s growing in size, staying alive longer and accumulating illness and disease and a system that was designed not for that volume and scale and complexity and therefore it can’t meet the demands. And so, when demand exceeds supply, it's the perfect breeding ground to do things differently Affiliate Disclosure About the Guest: Dr. Zayna Khayat Zayna is the Future Strategist at Saint Elizabeth a health and social impact enterprise with a major focus on home care. Ahead of Biotechnology Focus radio are some of the highlights of the week. ImmunoBiochem is haloed with angel investors after completing a new round of financing. Biotalent Canada provides subsidy to fund more “green jobs” for young graduates. eSight named one of the best inventions in 2017 by giving the gift of sight. Zymeworks presents results of ongoing completed dose escalation phase 1 oncology study. Welcome to another episode of Biotechnology Focus radio. I am your host, Michelle Currie, here to give you a run-down of the top stories of Canada’s biotech scene. +++++ Our first story this week takes us to the heart of Toronto with ImmunoBiochem Corporation as it completes a new round of financing led by angel investors and the company’s founding investor. The corporation has expanded its operations and is now located at Johnson & Johnson, JLABS, in the centre of Toronto. The company is focused on solving tumour heterogeneity by targeting a class of proteins in the tumour microenvironment with antibody drug conjugates (ADCs). This is an anticancer therapeutics class that combines the selectivity of targeted biologics with the potency of highly cytotoxic small-molecule drugs. One of the highest priorities of ImmunoBiochem is to transform the lives of patients who have triple-negative breast cancer – an extremely aggressive disease that has poor survival rates and does not respond well to major therapies. ImmunoBiochem in partnership with the Centre for the Commercialization of Antibodies and Biologics (CCAB) and the University of Toronto, has developed fully-human antibodies for the treatment of breast cancer and solid tumours. JLABS Toronto is a 40,000 square foot facility located in the MaRS Discovery District. The labs provide a flexible environment for start-up companies pursuing innovative technologies and research platforms for life sciences. Johnson & Johnson does not take an equity stake in the companies occupying their space or in developed products. ImmunoBiochem is a member of the Ontario Bioscience Innovation Organization and is partaking in the OBIO Capital Access Advisory Program. The company is also supported by MaRS Health and the Health Innovation Hub (H2i) accelerator at the University of Toronto. The company will be at the JPMorgan Healthcare week in California next month and is open to additional partnerships and investment. +++++ BioTalent Canada announces the extension of its wage-subsidy program aimed at helping new graduates across Canada gain access to “green jobs”. The federally funded program will provide $2.3 million in wage subsidies and create over 200 new placements over the next two years in biotech, environmental and likewise sectors. Career Focus Green Jobs is a wage subsidy initiate intended to alleviate youth unemployment. It has been funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy. Wage subsidies have a positive record of jumpstarting careers, especially for biotech grads and aiding small to mid-sized enterprises acquire the funds to hire more talent. According to the BioTalent Canada’s 2017 labour market report on youth employment, almost 85 per cent of new graduates retain full-time employment after their wage subsidy ends. BioTalent Canada, a national non-profit HR association for Canada’s bio-economy, has a long track record of successful implementation of wage-subsidy programs and will disburse over $10.3 million in wage subsidies, to create 1,400 job placements over the next four years. The Green Jobs program will form an important component of those new placements. Eligible companies will be those with a sustainable development mission, or those with products or services that directly reduce carbon footprint, enhance recycling or reduce waste. Similarly, positions that are dedicated to those ends from other industries may also be eligible for the subsidy. Companies interested in applying are encouraged to visit biotalent.ca/wage-subsidies for more information. +++++ Time magazine has named eSight one of the best inventions in 2017. After years of challenging work, and millions of dollars, the company was able to develop electronic glasses that actually allowed the blind to see. Inspired by his two blind sisters, the founder had decided to use his engineering skills to find a solution they could live with. The organization believes that everyone deserves to see. This technology has the capability of changing millions of individual lives across the world. It will allow for mobility and freedom and for each person to experience those momentous moments when they can see their loved ones faces, their peers, and a whole new way to virtually see life. Dr. Brian Mech, president and CEO of eSight says that “For eSight to receive this recognition from Time is a wonderful affirmation of the breakthrough work we do on a daily basis to Make Blindness History. eSight’s world-class lab is the largest and most advanced, anywhere in the world, that specializes exclusively in developing clinically-validated medical devices that allow the legally blind to actually see and be independently mobile.” eSight will work on individuals with low vision, and who are legally blind. People who are legally blind have an acuity of 20/200 or poorer in their better eye. Low vision is another term often used, referring to people who have an acuity of 20/70 or poorer in their better eye. The eyes are very complex organs and there are many eye conditions that can cause blindness or low vision. There are many testimonials from legally blind individuals who have used this device can not express enough how much this technology has changed and enhanced their life. The company has seen tremendous amounts of interest from companies wishing to help their blind employees to schools wanting to give the gift of sight to students. Time magazine has aptly named eSight for being one of the best inventions in 2017. +++++ Lastly this week, Zymeworks Inc. presents the completed dose escalation portion of its phase I study of ZW25, a bispecific antibody targeting two distinct domains of the HER2 receptor. The HER2-mediated signaling pathway is perceived to contribute to tumour growth in several cancers. There have been 22 patients enrolled in the study – 11 with breast cancer, eight with gastric, gastroesophageal junction, or esophageal (GE), and three with other HER2-expressing cancers. Part one of the multi-part study was a standard dose escalation where patients received ZW25 either weekly or bi-weekly in cycles of four weeks each. The Study Highlights are: – Six Partial Responses (PR) were observed across all dosing groups. – Clinical benefit was observed in heavily pretreated HER2-high breast and GE cancer patients. – Breast cancer patients received a median of six prior HER2-targeted regimens for metastatic disease; partial response in 56 per cent (5/9) of breast cancer patients with measurable disease, with 89 per cent (8/9) experiencing a decrease in target lesions. – Three HER2-high GE cancer patients with measurable disease displayed shrinking tumours. – ZW25 was well-tolerated at all doses and schedules, with the most common adverse events being diarrhea, infusion reactions, or nausea. – The dose escalation portion of the phase I trial is complete and enrollment in the expansion cohorts is underway. There was a reduction in target lesions per RECIST criteria in 79 per cent of breast and GE cancer patients with measurable disease (11/14). The best overall response (BOR) in 17 patients that had at least one tumour restaging was six in breast and GE cancer patients’ PR (35 per cent), three with SD (18 per cent) and eight with progressive disease (47 per cent). Of the eleven breast cancer patients, all were HER2-high and had received a median of six prior HER2-targeted regimens for metastatic disease. Of the eight GE patients, six were evaluable for response, and had received a median of four prior systemic regimens. Three of five patients with measurable disease had a decrease in tumour size. +++++ Well that wraps up another episode of Biotechnology Radio. We hope you enjoyed it. On this weeks show, and amazing turnaround in the fortunes of the MaRS West Tower, CQDM and Brain Canada team up once again, and a significant step in the fight against cancer. We have all this and more on this week’s Biotechnology Focus Radio Show Podcast. Welcome to another episode of Biotechnology Focus Podcast. I’m your host Shawn Lawrence, here to give you a rundown of this week’s top stories on the Canadian biotech scene, Story CQDM and Brain Canada are join forces again in the funding of two new research projects to address unmet needs in brain research. Together, the two organizations are awarding a total of $3 million to the projects which will oversee the development cutting-edge tools, technologies and platforms designed to accelerate the discovery of new drugs for brain and nervous system disorders. The two distinguished research teams will unite nine researchers from seven public and private organizations across Canada. The first project is led by Edward Fon at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (MNI) joined by multi-provincial collaborators from McGill University, Université Laval and University of British Columbia. The second project led by Jean-Martin Beaulieu at University of Toronto is a public-private collaboration with the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre and ImStar Therapeutics in Vancouver. Additionally, these researchers will benefit from CQDM’s unique mentoring program. They will have the opportunity to collaborate with influential senior scientists from the pharmaceutical industry who bring expertise and support to the projects, to help better align research with the needs of industry and patients. The Brain Canada funds are provided through a partnership with Health Canada, known as the Canada Brain Research Fund. Story Princess Margaret Cancer Centre scientists have discovered a distinct cell population in tumours that inhibits the body’s immune response to fight cancer. According to principal investigator Pamela Ohashi, director, Tumour Immunotherapy Program at the cancer centre, University Health Network. Dr. Ohashi holds a Canada Research chair in Autoimmunity and Tumour Immunity, the findings, published online in Nature Medicine, are critical to understanding more about why patients will or will not respond to immune therapies. Specifically, Dr. Ohashi and her team uncovered a potential new approach to modulate the immune response to cancer. She adds that by looking at tumour biology from this different perspective, researchers will have a better understanding of the barriers that prevent a strong immune response. This can help advance drug development to target these barriers. Dr. Ohashi discusses her team’s discovery of a new population of cells that regulate immune response in the following audio clip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-vbE-DRTdY Dr. Ohashi’s research team along with international collaborators analyzed more than 100 patient samples from ovarian and other cancer types to discover a distinct population of cells found in some tumours. This population of cells suppresses the growth of cancer-fighting immune cells, thereby limiting the ability of the immune system to fight off cancer. For patients, down the road Dr. Ohashi envisions a new era of combined therapies to simultaneously target and kill these suppressive cells while augmenting the immune response against cancer. The team’s next avenue of research will be focused on identifying a “biomarker” that can identify this distinct suppressive cell elsewhere in the body – for example, in blood or other samples – as a potential predictive clinical tool to determine when these cells are present in patients, which currently cannot be done. Dr. Ohashi’s research was funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. Story Aequus Pharmaceuticals has landed $100,000 in federal funding through the National Research Council’s Industrial Research Assistance Program. The company plans to use funds towards an ongoing proof-of-concept clinical study for its lead product candidate, AQS1301, a once-weekly transdermal aripiprazole patch. Aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic and the active ingredient in Abilify®, a leading medication in the U.S. used for the treatment of a number of psychiatric disorders including bipolar I disorder, schizophrenia, major depressive disorder and irritability associated with autistic disorder. Aripiprazole is currently available in once-daily oral tablets and a once-monthly injectable form, however, medication adherence continues to be a significant challenge for patients. Offering the medication in a patch form potentially could make it more convenient to use, and improve patient adherence says Anne Stevens, COO and director of Aequus Pharmaceuticals . The product is currently in clinical development, butAequus expects to confirm its regulatory development plan in a pre-Investigational New Drug (pre-IND) meeting with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the second half of 2017. Aequus anticipates results of the current repeat dose, 28-day study in the first quarter of 2017. The results will be used to inform the final design of the patch to be advanced into the regulatory phase of its clinical trials. Story Genome British Columbia is making an investment into Augurex Life Sciences through its Industry Innovation (I²) funding program. The company was founded on an invention shared between the University of Alberta and the University of British Columbia in 2006. The funding is repayable and is allocated to promising technologies (products, processes or services) at the early stages of commercial development, and aims to provide risk capital that is concurrently matched by other public or private funding sources. The investment will go towards helping the company launch several blood test products from its pipeline and advance its overall therapeutic program. With a focus on autoimmune diseases affecting joints such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), Augurex has already developed its first blood test, called JOINTstat™, which measures the 14-3-3η(eta) protein in blood for early RA diagnosis, joint damage risk monitoring, and also predicts RA development in people with joint pain. Since this is a very early contributor to disease and correlates with joint damage prognosis, it facilitates the identification of patients for early RA intervention and tighter control of treatment so that clinical and remission targets can be reached; the highest priorities in rheumatology care. Additionally, a portfolio of 14-3-3η-centric biomarkers has emerged from Augurex’s work, with demonstrated applications in multiple autoimmune diseases with joint involvement. As an aside, JOINTstat has since been studied in over 4,000 patients, and is Health Canada approved. It was launched in Canada by LifeLabs and has been in clinical use since late 2013 in the U.S. Recently, the test was also CE marked and TGA approved making it certified for clinical use in Europe and Australia. Story California Capital Equity, LLC, has increased its equity position in Laval, QC’s ProMetic Life Sciences, exercising 44,791,488 share purchase warrants at a price of $0.47 per share for total proceeds of $21,051,999.36. The venture capital firm based in LosAngeles, CA, specializes in providing growth and development capital to start-up through mezzanine stages. The firm’s equity and debt investments are typically in small and medium sized companies. It first invested in ProMetic in 2008. Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, CEO of California Capital Equity cited the company’s robust proprietary therapeutic platforms and promising growth potential as key factors behind the firm’s latest investment. Story Our final story this week, In an amazing turnaround for what once was a struggling center for innovation and entrepreneurship, that once upon a time event required the government of Ontario to step in and offer bridge financing to keep it afloat, MaRS Discovery District now reports that it has completed a significant private financing of its West Tower, with proceeds of this transaction to be used to repay most of the Ontario government's interest-bearing loans to MaRS. The caveat, is the repayment comes almost three years ahead of schedule. Taking part in the private financing are Manulife, Sun Life Financial and iA Financial Group, who together led the $290-million transaction by investing in 19-year bonds issued by Phase II Investment Trust. According to Ilse Treurnicht, CEO of MaRS, the West Tower is now fully leased, and could soon generate the operating income required to be entirely self-sustaining, putting MaRS on stable footing. Last year we featured two of the more noteworthy tenants at the building, Johnson & Johnson’s JLABS @ Toronto, and the Bridge@CCRM in our June/July issue of Biotechnology Focus. And now, offering over 1.5 million square feet of state-of-the-art lab and office space in the heart of Toronto's Discovery District, the MaRS Centre is now home to more than 140 research labs and companies spanning the entire innovation ecosystem, including Multinational medical firms such as Johnson & Johnson's JLABS @ Toronto, which itself houses over 40 biotech and health startups, Merck, growing life science firms such as Synaptive Medical, Deep Genomics, Interface Biologics, Highland Therapeutics, and Triphase Accelerator; and life science incubators like Blueline Bioscience. Leading research groups from the University of Toronto (which owns a 20% stake in the West Tower), University Health Network (including Princess Margaret Cancer Centre), Ryerson University and the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research also call the West tower home. The facility has even attracted other major tenants like Autodesk, Facebook, Merck, PayPal, Etsy, Airbnb, IBM, CIBC and RBC. In all, ventures within the MaRS network raised $2.6 billion in capital and generated $1.3 billion in revenue between 2008 and 2015, and today employs more than 5,200 people. If you think the legal industry’s future depends on small and big firms working together, you might be from MaRS. By MaRS, we mean the Canadian-based MaRS Discovery District (originally named Medical and Related Sciences) and its recent project to innovate the legal profession. In this episode of Law Technology Now, host Monica Bay interviews Aron Solomon and Jason Moyse, the co-founders of recent MaRS startup LegalX. Together, they talk about today’s transition from the big firm model of yesterday in favor of more nimble practices traditionally found in smaller firms and startups. Although there will always be a need for Biglaw on large, highly profitable matters, 80% of the U.S. market is priced out of legal services. That unmet need has become a primary driver in sweeping change to the legal industry. So, what do these driving forces mean for the future of law? Monica, Aron, and Jason take turns answering that question with their forecasts of the legal market for the next 2-5 years. Not only will this near future continue to see big firms receding, but it will also usher in an era of innovation. Legal solutions made on one side of the globe will be solving problems on the other. Even more surprising, it is predicted that Biglaw will collaborate with small firms to produce more comprehensive offerings at lower prices. Tune in to hear more about the future of law as seen from MaRS.
In this episode host Tyler Hamilton interviews Ron Dizy, managing director of the Advanced Energy Centre at the Mars Discovery District in Toronto. Discussion includes flywheel technology from Temporal Power, opportunities for Canadian cleantech companies in Chile and China, and how to reduce barriers that will help Canadian cleantech companies scale up.
