Our guest on the podcast this week is Karen Lee, Chief Executive Officer of Pioneer Human Services, Karen leads one of the nation's largest nonprofit social-enterprise organizations in the United States. Under Karen's leadership, Pioneer successfully operates several revenue-generating businesses that provide living-wage jobs to mission-related employees and help fund its mission of empowering people who have been involved in the legal system to build healthy, productive lives. Headquartered in Seattle, Pioneer serves over 10,000 people a year through its diversion, treatment, housing, and job training programs. Karen is a graduate of the University of Washington School of Law and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Today Karen shares her experiences of being an African/American woman in America, the discrimination she suffered from early childhood and how that instilled in her a desire to dedicate her life to fight racism directly and really make a lasting change in society. Karen shares some shocking statistics that we may often assume there is equal policing and equal punishment and she asks the all important question of how we can be more forgiving and loving, to change attitudes particularly around incarceration and race. Listen in as we discuss the challenges that exist. Karen speaks with a passion about how discrimination is personal, it's not a generalized issue; how the complexities of our societal systems perpetuate an unnecessary fear in society that makes people afraid of ‘difference'. She makes it clear that we need to change and Pioneer Human Services, where she is CEO, is helping to make that change reality with their incredible work in the state of Washington. This was such an insightful conversation for me, and I felt so humbled by Karen's perspective and work giving people a real chance for change. If you're interested in a fairer future for all, I think you'll really enjoy our conversation. Key Takeaways Karen's perspective on discrimination, how it is so personal and experience. The opportunities for change, to commit to systemic changes and big picture, sustainable solutions. The need for the basic human rights of fairness, equality, and access, to change the outcomes of so many who live underneath the poverty line. What we can do to change attitudes in the hearts and minds of every American citizen. Memorable Quote We need to get to the root of why people don't behave the way society expects because everyone can be successful if given the right opportunity and support. there's hope in creating safer communities that impact families and generate positive outcomes.”—Karen Lee, CEO, Pioneer Episode Resources: https://pioneerhumanservices.org/ (Pioneer Human Services website) https://pioneerhumanservices.org/quiz (Take the Quiz to test your knowledge of Mass Incarceration in the US) http://sacredchangemakers.com/ (SacredChangemakers.com) https://sacredchangemakers.com/community (Our Sacred Community) https://www.instagram.com/jayne_m_warrilow/?hl=en (Jayne Warrilow on Instagram) If you would like to support our show: Please rate, review and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes and other podcast platforms. Today Karen and I talk about our own journeys that include healing from life-halting trauma to finding our own unique way to business success, we discuss business/leadership and also what we've learned from the Covid-19 global pandemic. We both feel passionate about this time of transformation that we're all living through, and taking responsibility for playing our part in consciously shaping a better world for us all to enjoy. We touched on so many aspects of life, from the energy that animates all things to the invisible connections in between. Listen in as we both discuss what matters most to each of us right now, of bringing humanity back into the world of business and breaking through the invisible challenges of our time, especially around mental health and wellbeing. Key Takeaways How we each overcame life-halting traumas to come back to life Why energetic resonance matters How we can show up whole to life What we've both learned from the Covid-19 pandemic What you can do to make a difference Memorable Quote “What if we could just start by accepting that life is uncertain, it gives you the freedom to make the most of the moment that you're in, even if it is a tough moment, even if it is challenging you can still be fully present. Today Karen talks about tweeting your way to the top — how you can use Twitter to build your business, your book, or your brand online. When you consider that 44% of Twitter users are between 18 and 34, that 69% are moms, and that 72% who follow a brand are likely to buy, it’s an opportunity you might not want to pass over. But like all social media, effectiveness boils down to a few factors that Karen breaks down in a comprehensive way for this short, informative episode. Tips for Tweets Relationships — Connect, expand, and maintain. Generate leads and get attention — Twitter can give you access to people in your field, otherwise impossible to reach. Branding and image building — Use Twitter to gain perspective on your own image. Buzz and promo — It’s a great place to build some excitement over a new product. Consistency is key — Posting should be done 2 to 4 times a day, 5 days a week. Using Twitter strategically can be a real boon for marketing a book, business, product, or brand. If you find that it’s a good fit for you but you’d like more information after listening in to this podcast, feel free to reach out to karen@karenleland.com for a great little 30-minute audio workbook called Tweet Your Way to the Top. They say it's impossible. They say, "You can't go on vacation if you work in real estate." But, is that true? Today Karen shows us how to take a proper vacation while still providing a high level of service to your business: 1. You don't need to keep your vacation a secret! 2. Tell your clients that your vacation starts a day earlier and goes a day longer than it actually does. (Listen in to find out why!) 3. Check your email once or twice a day while you're away so you can forward important things to your back up person, delete the junk emails, and save the emails that you will want to follow up on in a separate box within your inbox for after your vacation. 4. Don't schedule any morning appointments for your first real day back to work. Not only are breaks from work possible, but they are necessary. Today Karen gives us a doable strategy for staying in contact with our people. We're adjusting to working from home and we are limited in our access to showings and public events so let's make sure we stay close. 1. Reach out 2x weekly to your active clients. They may be hearing mixed messages on the news or from friends and family, so you need to be that calm, steady source of wisdom surrounding their transaction. 2. Contact 3 people per day. Have a low goal like this and maybe you'll get into a good rhythm and you'll want to do more than 3. In reality, it will feel easier once you get started and your calls may turn into texting conversations and that's really good, too. 3. Do 5 social media posts per week. These should be positive and should promote the community. This is your best substitute for meeting new people out and about. 4. You know Karen loves her hand written notes. She's a big believer, so keep it up and shoot for 5 per week. And remember! Empowering Coaching is currently free. Join Karen here at www.empoweringwomeninrealestate.com. Welcome to Episode 18 of Empowering Women in Real Estate, the Podcast! Today Karen is talking about how systems can be your best friend in your business. Why? Because systems help make things repeatable by someone else. Systems will cut your training time in half when the time comes to hire someone new. Even if you're not in hiring mode now systems are important for your sanity. What do you need a system for? Any task that is something that you would do more than twice, even if it is something that you know exactly how to do. Down the road, you'll get busier and, though it seems impossible now, you'll forget the details of that task. Many steps of real estate transactions become so automatic to us but we still experience times when we can't remember if we've done a certain step precisely because they are automatic.
