We talk about goals, failing it and nailing it, with two very ordinary busy working mums, Sophie Gasson and Katy O'Connor. Sophie was on the podcast in 2021 after attempting to swim the channel. While Katy is a 3 time long-distance triathlon finisher. She took up triathlon in her 50s, after she was hooked in following an opportunity to volunteer at Ironman UK. She's also had brain surgery twice and is passionate about living life with no regrets. Katy wasn't a swimmer, didn't have a bike and has spent the last ten years progressing through the distances but admits she often needs something scary to make her work hard! You'll hear: 06:00 Interview with Sophie Gasson - channel swimmer at 54 31:00 Katy explains the seed that was planted after she experienced her first Ironman in 2011, working as a volunteer at Ironman UK. She went on to set herself a challenge for her 50th birthday, of a big swim, a big ride and a big run, despite not being able to swim front crawl or ride a bike. 36:00 She talks about her plan to start out with sprints, before stepping up to Olympic distance, then middle distance and then a full distance and her first Ironman at Bolton in 2018. "Ironman UK was the one that got me hooked and it gives me goosebumps thinking about it." And I always said if I finish Bolton, then I'm going to do Wales." 42:00 Katy says she entered Ironman Wales 2022 for her 60th birthday and was meticulous about her training and meeting the cut-off times. 43:00 Ironmind Sports Psychology programme "Ironmind." Katy talks about how beneficial this was to her. 45:00 Katy on the swim at Ironman Wales and how horrendous conditions at Long Course Weekend two months prior gave her the confidence to know she would be okay at Ironman Wales. 47:30 Learning to swim... Katy hadn't done front crawl before she was 50 and she talks through the process of having to learn to swim as an adult. 50:00 So interesting and so many people can relate 'I felt you had to be really fast to join a tri club.' 55:30 Why Katy did achieve her 'why' and why it was so important to her. "when you do achieve something like that it gives you the confidence to think 'what's next?' 59:30 The importance of saying YES to things to Katy. "I've had brain surgery twice." It was a case of "If the tumour is not removed, it will eventually kill you." After the second one when the operation had been a success it was like a new start. And every time when I have the choice of doing something I think 'what are you waiting for?' Habits & Health episode 69 with Elizabeth Gasson-Hargreaves, a Functional Medicine Practitioner and Nutritional Therapist.  15 years ago, her son Charlie had less than 24 hours to live had he not received vital antibiotics which saved his life. This had a major impact on Elizabeth. Charlie was 6 weeks old and had bacterial meningitis.   Following his recovery, she had two choices: to live with fear every time her son became unwell or to understand what made him so susceptible to this disease - or dis-ease within his microbiome.  This led Elizabeth on a journey of discovery and she realised that disease was more likely to be about the internal environment. Which helped her understand how important microbes were; not just for us internally, but for the soil in which we grow our food. The soil in our gut and the soil in the ground are deeply connected. As Franklin Roosevelt said, “the Nation that destroys its soil, destroys itself”.     She believes everyone has the right to healthy food, grown in a way that preserves our soil, not destroys it.     Full shownotes including a transcription available at: https://tonywinyard.com/elizabeth-gasson-hargreaves/ Habits & Health links: Website - tonywinyard.com Facebook Page - facebook.com/TonyWinyard.HabitsAndHealth Facebook Group - facebook.com/groups/habitshealth Twitter - @TonyWinyard Instagram - @tony.winyard LinkedIn - uk.linkedin.com/in/tonywinyard YouTube How to leave a podcast review - tonywinyard.com/how-to-leave-a-podcast-review/ Details of online workshops to create habits for health - tonywinyard.com/training/ Are you in control of your habits or are they in control of you? Take my quiz to find out - tonywinyard.com/quiz

It's so easy to look at Instagram and feel like everyone else is constantly smashing PBs and smiling their way through training and events. But we all have setbacks along the way, extra challenges that we face, doubt in our head. So let's hear it for two very different women who are happy to share their own experiences with you. Professional triathlete Simone Ackermann trains with her local tri club, had to rely on financial support from her Dad and even swapped countries in order to compete at Tokyo 2020. While amateur swimmer Sophie Gasson's dream of swimming the channel was pulled away by the tides, when she was 16 hours into her swim and she could see France in the distance. You'll hear: 06:32 Start of the interview with channel swimmer Sophie Gasson, ten days after her attempt to swim the channel. 08:25 Sophie says she isn't some kind of super human swimmer or an elite swimmer 'I didn't swim for my school, I didn't swim for a club or for Uni. I really like swimming, I like the cold and I like the feeling that the sea is different every time you get in it.' 12:00 Sophie talks about why swimming the channel appealed to her. 20:00 How Sophie mentally prepared for her attempt for three years and what happened when the weather started to delay her attempt. 'Suddenly I'm not allowed to go and it really threw me. 34:30 How Sophie to strength from the people she supports through her work as a cancer rehabilitation specialist. 37:25 'I could see France ahead of me, I could see the cliffs and then it all went belly up but I had no idea what was going on.' 'We must be nearly there' I thought. I didn't know that the tide was sweeping us really fast towards Calais' 42:30 In the end we got told to get out by the French authorities, because we were in the shipping lane. But in the grand scheme of things I didn't do it, I'm not a channel swimmer because I didn't set foot in France. We did the very best we could. I swam for 16hours and 4 minutes and I got pulled out because of the tide, not because I couldn't do it. 51:20 Why age really doesn't matter when it comes to taking yourself out of your comfort zone. 54:52 Start of the Simone Ackermann interview, which kicks off with Simone talking about her experience taking part in the Super League Triathlon Championship Series 2021. 1:04:42 The difference in funding systems between New Zealand and South Africa and why Simone wouldn't have been able to go the Olympics, had it not been for her Dad. 1:09:30 Simone trains on her own, or with her local tri club when she is back in New Zealand 'a bunch of middle age men, who are lawyers, accountants, doctors. My setup in New Zealand is very different to most of my fellow competitors.' 1:12:45 Why Simone is a huge fan of Parkrun 'with being stuck in New Zealand, for a lot of last year, it became the main event! It's just such a good event, it's accessible for anyone and it's brilliant for anyone to set a goal and work towards. I can't think of any event quite like it in the world. I think as a person just going out there, it's just the best. I would encourage anyone to go along to their local event.' 1:18:55 Since Rio it hasn't been a smooth journey and if you had asked me back then (Rio) I wouldn't have thought I would have got to where I am right now. The Food Animal Concern Trust (FACT) has a "Fund A Farmer" program that provides financial awards to livestock farmers who have project needs that improve their humane farm animal production practices. FACT believes farm animals deserve adequate space, access to the outdoors, clean water and air, the opportunity to express their natural behaviors, and healthful feed.  One of the farms recently recognized by FACT is Bull City Farm, near Durham, North Carolina. Bull City Farm was started in response to Samantha and Scott Gasson's desire to feed their family humanely raised meat that they knew had been treated with respect and thoughtfulness. As their kids grew so did the farm but it wasn’t until the purchase of  property in Northern Durham County in 2014 that they could really take off. Samantha has a degree in biology from VA tech and 20+ years of experience teaching. She especially enjoys teaching about animals and farming; so she is the director of their camps and runs the day-to-day on the farm including moving, loading and care of the animals. Scott has a full-time off farm job but works every weekend on the farm….no rest for the weary. All three of their kids work on the farm doing everything from being camp counselors, milking, feeding to filling waters. The whole family works hard to make the farm a success and fulfill its mission:  "to provide healthy, humanely raised meats and to educate the members of our community about sustainable small scale farming." www.foodanimalconcernstrust.org www.bullcityfarm.com

Global Warriors play-by-play commentator Reed Duthie and GWFC 3 lightweight competitor Oliver Vadnais joined Rear-Naked Choke Radio host Jason Kelly (@JayKellyMMA) and guest co-host Alex Gasson (@PeckingClaw) to discuss calling MMA bouts, the loss of a headliner, fighter sponsorship from the regional to UFC level, training abroad and Global Warriors 3 (@GlobalWarriorFC). Global Warriors 3 takes place May 28 at the Brantford Civic Centre in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, and the event features a plethora of Ontario mixed martial artists. Hamilton, Ontario native Josh Hill was scheduled to fight Bill Kamery in the main event at GWFC 3 Hill was on loan from WSOF, but has been called back to the promotion to challenge Marlon Moraes for the bantamweight tile match. Hill and Moraes Vadnais last saw MMA competition at Global Warriors 2 in May 2016. He joined Kelly and Gasson to talk about his return to the promotion to fight Scott Hudson, injuries and opponents pulling out of fights and preventing him from competing, sponsorship difficulties, as well as training with SBG in England. Vadnais, while only a mixed martial artist with three pro bouts and limited media experience, proved to have a veteran mindset and handled his guest spot with great composure. Duthie (@RCDuthie) holds down the play-by-play commentating alongside Robin Black at GWFC 3. The OHL's Hamilton Bulldogs commentator joined RNC Radio and gave his thoughts on the event, which fighters to watch for, his experiences calling MMA bouts and what lies in his future. Duthie, Gasson and Kelly also compared lack of ego in a trained fighter, as opposed to arrogance of an uneducated dick. On this episode of MMA Cypher Radio on the MMA DieHards Radio Network, hosts Jason Kelly (Twitter: @JayMMADieHards) and Corey Charron (Twitter: @charronkotd) welcome a trio of superb guests. First up is Anthony Birchak (Twitter: @abirchakmma). Birchak put on one of the most exciting performances of the year at MFC 37, when he defeated Ryan Benoit via decision in a 25-minute brawl. The victory set up Birchak for a MFC bantamweight title shot at MFC 38 against Tito Jones on Oct. 4 at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. The card includes three title fights, therefore, the MFC has left it up to the fans to decide who fills the coveted main event slot. To vote for Birchak, fans can log on the Fakebook.com and “Like” the photo in the hyperlink or hit up Twitter and tweet, “@MaximumFighting @abirchakmma #MFC #MFC38 #Bantamweight.” Friend of the show, Alex Gasson (Twitter: @Pecker17) also lent some time to talk MMA, Ontario combat sports and share some hilarious stories as usual. Owner of Pecker Promotions and manager of Adrenaline Training Centre, Gasson was busy promoting grappling tournaments and MMA events earlier in the year, but has been relatively quiet as of late. However, he made us aware something is in the works, so be on the lookout for Gasson’s upcoming projects. To cap the show off, Provincial Fighting Championships president Jamie Champion (Twitter: @JamieChampion) informed us on the details surrounding the promotion’s inaugural event. PFC 1 is taking place on Oct. 26 at the Agrilex Building at the Western Fair District in London, Ontario. The event is headlined by MMA veteran Chris Horodecki, and showcases a plethora of talent from the venue’s locale. Champion shed some light on constructing an MMA event, as well as some of the talent the Muay Thai practitioner hired in the front office.
