He is co-author with Jason Jones of “God, Guns, & the Government.” John Zmirak's new book: No Second Amendment, No First by John Zmirak Available March 19, 2024 Today's Left endlessly preaches the evils of “gun violence." It is a message increasingly echoed from the nation's pulpits, presented as common-sense decency and virtue. Calls for “radical non-violence” are routinely endowed with the imprimatur of religious doctrine. But what if such teachings were misguided, even damaging? What if the potential of a citizenry to exercise force against violent criminals and tyrannical governments is not just compatible with church teaching, but flows from the very heart of Biblical faith and reason? What if the freedoms we treasure are intimately tied to the power to resist violent coercion? This is the long-overdue case John Zmirak makes with stunning clarity and conviction in No Second Amendment, No First. A Yale-educated journalist and former college professor, Zmirak shows how the right of self-defense against authoritarian government was affirmed in both the Old and New Testaments, is implied in Natural Law, and has been part of Church tradition over the centuries. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out our ACU Patreon page: https://www.patreon.com/ACUPodcast HELP ACU SPREAD THE WORD! In 2009, David Goldhill's father died of a hospital-acquired infection. And he realized that preventing medical errors was not an economic imperative in the American healthcare system. In fact, our third-party payment system creates a misalignment of incentives, making insurers and governments the customer rather than the patients themselves. So, David wrote a cover story for The Atlantic entitled ‘How American Health Care Killed My Father' which expanded into a book, Catastrophic Care: Why Everything We Think We Know about Health Care Is Wrong.Since then, David has become a leading voice for healthcare advocacy and founded Sesame, a company that is revolutionizing healthcare with a direct-pay marketplace that delivers high quality healthcare at half the price. On this episode of The Beat, David joins hosts Dr. Jessica Shepherd and Dr. Gautam Gulati to explain who uses the marketplace and how competition drives down prices on Sesame without compromising quality of care.David discusses what attracts providers to the Sesame model and describes the criteria for joining the platform as well as its rigorous rating system.Listen in for insight on maintaining continuity of care in telehealth and learn how David is bringing a revolution of consumerism to healthcare in the US and around the world.Topics CoveredHow Sesame eliminates the third-party payment system from healthcareThe breakdown of who uses Sesame's direct pay marketplaceHow competition drives down prices on Sesame without compromising quality of careThe personal experience that inspired David's healthcare advocacyHow the third-party payment system causes a misalignment of incentives in healthcareWhy insurance- and safety net-based healthcare systems are outdated What attracts healthcare providers to the Sesame modelThe criteria for providers to join Sesame and the platform's rigorous rating systemHow David thinks about maintaining continuity of care in telehealthHow Sesame handles the transference of health records and informationWhat David admires about the current healthcare system in AmericaDavid's vision for bringing a revolution of consumerism to the healthcare industryConnect with David GoldhillSesameDavid at SesameDavid on LinkedInConnect with Dr. Gautam Gulati & Dr. Jessica ShepherdViVEHLTHDr. Shepherd on TwitterDr. Shepherd on LinkedInDr. Gulati on TwitterDr. Gulati on LinkedInResources‘How American Health Care Killed My Father' in The AtlanticCatastrophic Care: Why Everything We Think We Know about Health Care Is Wrong by David GoldhillAtul Gawande‘The Cost Conundrum' in The New Yorker‘The Heroism of Incremental Care' in The New Yorker‘In Health Care, America Is the World's Indispensable Nation' in The Washington Post

We're taking a break this week for the Thanksgiving holiday, so here's an episode you might have missed. We'll be back on Monday with a new episode. Hundreds of thousands of people charged with crimes in the US each year are incarcerated while they await trial. Often it's because they can't afford to pay bail. New York City's pretrial supervised release program aims to change that. A judge can opt to release some defendants under the supervision of a caseworker, who monitors their progress as they await their day in court. Bloomberg's Fola Akinnibi and Sarah Holder join this episode to talk about how the program works, the fraught politics around it–and why it may become a blueprint for other cities and states. America Is a Republic, Not a Democracy America is a republic and not a pure democracy. The contemporary efforts to weaken our republican customs and institutions in the name of greater equality thus run against the efforts by America's Founders to defend our country from the potential excesses of democratic majorities. American republicanism and the ordered liberty it makes possible are grounded in the Federalists' recognition that non-majoritarian parts of the community make legitimate contributions to the community's welfare, and that preserving these contributions is the hallmark of political justice. But, the careful balance produced by our mixed republic is... View Article

According to David Grusch, a former intelligence official who recently alleged that the U.S. government is secretly storing alien spacecraft, the answer is yes. He is, of course, not the first person to make a claim like this, but lawmakers appear to be taking him far more seriously than previous would-be whistle-blowers. So, what's really going on?On this week's episode of “Matter of Opinion,” our hosts discuss what the government is and isn't telling us, and what the obsession with classified cover-ups says about our complicated relationship with power. Shawn Wong discovered the first Japanese American novel, No-No Boy, at a used bookstore for 50 cents, after being told by his English professors that Asian American literature didn't exist. He sought out the author, John Okada, and he fought to have the book republished and distributed far and wide, to unearth the legacy of Asian American writers. But all the mainstream publishers rejected it. So Shawn started to print, distribute, and sell the novel himself with friends, often from the trunk of his car. The Asian American community turned up, ordering books by mail, telling their friends, and sending checks with handwritten letters- a testament to a generation hungry for their own stories.Correction, 10:30 a.m., 6/6/2023: The audio version of this story misstates the name of the protagonist in No-No Boy. Historian Jonathan D. Cohen has recently been making the rounds asking some important questions about whether operating a lottery is a proper thing for governments to do, and James Keys and Tunde Ogunlana take a look at Cohen's rationale for questioning lotteries and discuss why so many in the land of free enterprise have seemingly accepted the idea of having the state-run lotteries as an alternative to taxation (01:11). The guys also discuss a recent piece in the Atlantic which makes the case that the overwhelming pessimism Americans seem to have on the future of the country is misguided (28:33).A single winning ticket for Friday's $1.35 billion Mega Millions jackpot drawing was sold in Maine (CNN)What We've Lost Playing the Lottery (The New Yorker)Here's who really wins and loses in American lotteries (NPR)What the Lottery Reveals About the American Dream (Apple News)Despite Everything You Think You Know, America Is on the Right Track (The Atlantic)

EPISODE 69: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) It's hard to believe a Presidential speech about domestic threats to democracy would have to take a back seat to another story (2:20) But the Department of Justice has given "Use Immunity" to Trump flunky Kash Patel so he can be brought back before the Documents Grand Jury and tell the truth about whether or not he witnessed Trump verbally declassifying all the stolen documents (Spoiler alert: he didn't) (5:40) Patel's testimony suggests DOJ is still on a timeline towards indicting Trump in the first week of January (6:02) There was nothing WRONG with Biden's Democracy-In-Danger speech but it lacked the controlled rage he mastered in his speech in Philadelphia in September. Thus, the advice he asked me for 15 years ago about channeling anger into righteous indignation was either too good or not good enough (7:52) Unless this was some kind of "this is the last time I say it nicely" speech, Biden's call to the better angels of our nature will completely elude those who disagree with him and believe America IS a zero-sum game, like Stewart Rhodes, whose terrifying manifesto for Trump was released (9:30) And there's no use throwing the new facts in the DePape/Pelosis case at the Right Wing. It's case closed for them and any new facts can be dismissed as Cover-ups or Conspiracies (11:55) IN SPORTS: What if they gave a World Series no-hitter and nobody cared? B-Block (17:45) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Lia in Staten Island (18:40) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Elon Musk not knowing that +$8 and -$8 are different things fights Captain Obvious from The New York Times and Kyrie Irving and the NBA trying to fight their way out of the antisemitism mess, for the honors (22:15) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: It's 22 years ago now when Roger Clemens of the Yankees threw part of the broken bat of Mike Piazza of the Mets - threw it either AT him or inadvertently NEAR him. I had to do the first interview with Clemens, and then I asked a question that has haunted me for 22 years - what happened to the shattered bat? C-Block 41:09 THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: The Piazza Bat saga continues through the present day, and includes everybody from John Henry, owner of the Boston Red Sox, to Vin Scully, to Jay of Chez Jay restaurant in Santa Monica, California.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For most of my life I kept a secret. I had a dark place in my heart that I didn't let anyone else into. Many of us share in the feeling of suffering in silence. I would soon realize that I was walking with Same-Sex Attraction. In this season of life I thought, "I'm sure i'm not actually attracted to guys." I truthfully just got to a place in my life of doubting God. "If he really is God, and He is good, then why am I attracted to the same sex?" As Christians, we're often obsessed with behavior modification. It's easy for us to look at others and judge the issues that we don't personally deal with. As I stand at times between the LGBTQ+ community and the church, I know that although the Church is holy, it's people don't always stand blameless. Terrible things have happened to LGBTQ+ people in the name of God, and I don't condone any of things. With Politics, Laws, Stances and News Stories, we often miss the heart of the issue. They at times leave love somewhere far in the background. 1 Timothy 1:5-6 Says, The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith. But some people have missed this whole point. They have turned away from these things and spend their time in meaningless discussions. When I first reached the place of doubting God, I started to ask some tough questions. Do you really love me? Are you really a holy and trustworthy God? Can I Trust the scriptures to direct my life? All of this doubting caused me to push away my Christian community and even God himself. My distance from God caused more problems than my actions did. I don't believe in the heterosexual gospel. Everyone doesn't just turn straight as soon as they return to Jesus. Every person walking through this has a story with different experiences. We're all here, but we got here differently. People aren't gay just because they had dad issues, and trans women don't exist just because they played dress up with their sisters. This is a complex topic and it's time that we finally admit that. I believe that one way we can all move forward is with open and honest conversation. Attending church in America Is easy. Discipleship, Hospitality and Christ like love will take some intentionality and dependence on God. The church is the bride of Christ, therefore our doors have to be open to all who are weary. Our number one focus, for people dealing with this or any other issue, is that they meet Jesus. Jesus has now become the foundation of everything I do. God is satisfied with all of His fullness resting in Christ. If God is content with that, then why are we not? Why is Jesus not the focus of everything we do? The hope for all that walk with a story like mine isn't heterosexuality, it's Jesus. Other Verses Reference: Colossians 1:15-20, Ephesians 1:4-5

(00:00-09:51): We kick the show off with some major headlines over the weekend. The Washington Redskins are officially changing their nickname to remove the derogatory reference to Native Americans. Also, Trump is threatening to imprison those who defame statues in the state of Michigan. (09:51-29:50): We are joined by author and pastor, Kyle Tennant. He goes into his background as a Methodist church planter and his story on entering leadership. His book “Unfriend Yourself: Three Days to Detox, Discern, and Decide About Social Media” offers perspective on managing social media. Via Amazon: “Take a three-day social media fast with Unfriend Yourself and learn to examine your use of social media from a Christian perspective. This book will guide you in evaluating your fast by asking challenging questions such as: What happens when I broadcast myself on the Internet? Do I see a difference between my interactions on social media and my interactions face-to-face? Do I rule my media, or do my media rule me?” (29:50-40:12): What did we preach? For the first time since the lockdown began, Brian did not preach this past Sunday, but Ian did. Also, we are convicted by this Christian Post article “One third of practicing Christians not watching online church services during COVID-19 lockdown: Barna” (41:09-51:30): David French writes “America Is in the Grips of a Fundamentalist Revival” in his blog. Brian and Ian discuss the revolution of awareness and uprising of certain issues that has gripped the nation. What You Need to Know is that so much is looking up. Of course the media isn’t reporting the facts. Things are looking up! 1. The United States has now studied the Wuhan virus and has a great handle on what we need the government to do, and what we don’t need the government to do. Those facts are public and Americans can determine what to do. 2. The American economy is hot and going up, up, up! It’s our task to know and share the truth that things are getting better and better in America. Remember how important it is that we Americans together Pledge Allegiance to the Flag. Also, a big shout out to Eagle leader Woody Woodrum and do me a favor and take a look at what he’s doing at the California Screaming Eagles, organizing conservatives in California. Former socialist and great patriot David Horowitz explains how every move by the left and the Democrats is about getting rid of Trump. They say it’s about a virus, it’s about race, but it’s really about the establishment’s hate for Trump and America. And he tells us about the leadership of Black Lives Matter. If you’re not a racist, don’t be afraid to be called a racist. And call out true racists. Get Horowitz’s great new book, Blitz: Trump Will Smash the Left and Win. Jonna Bianco, President of the American Bondholders Foundation, reveals a strategy that President Trump could leverage toward China, calling them to pay back on their defaulted debt owed to American citizens holding sovereign bonds. China owes these debts, but previous U.S. administrations have not held them accountable for ignoring international law and defaulting on money owed to Americans. China must play by the same rules as every other country. Wrap up: The United States ALWAYS pays our bonds -- because we’re honorable, and for most countries, if they don’t pay their bonds they’re downgraded and not trusted. But China is not trustworthy. There is a second cold war, and now Congressman Mike Gallagher has said the same thing, Yes, America Is in a Cold War With China. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
