Building a 50-Year Legacy: The Gold Standard of Kitchen Design with Brian Foreman

Send us a textWhat does it take to build a 50-year legacy in a competitive industry? Brian Foreman, founder and president of Performance Kitchens and Home, reveals his extraordinary journey from determined young carpenter to established kitchen design visionary in this captivating conversation that bridges craftsmanship with entrepreneurship. When Brian couldn't afford prime real estate for his showroom, he secured an SBA loan to purchase a three-story building for just $40,000—a property now worth exponentially more. His persistence and commitment to excellence allowed him to revolutionize kitchen design presentations in 1980 by building intricate miniature models of every cabinet and appliance when computer design didn't exist. "In every couple, there's one who can visualize and one who cannot," Brian explains, sharing how his innovation reduced presentation times from 12 hours to 45 minutes while dramatically increasing conversions. What truly sets Brian apart is his methodical "Gold Standard" approach to kitchen design, symbolized by a diamond within a circle. The diamond represents four essential elements that must be approached in sequence: architectural design (how the kitchen relates to the home), cabinetry layout, interior design (where most designers mistakenly begin), and lighting design. This system guarantees kitchens that not only look stunning but function perfectly and maximize property values—crucial knowledge for real estate investors seeking maximum returns.Beyond technical expertise, Brian shares remarkable stories of mentorship, including his relationship with legendary furniture designer George Nakashima, for whom he sourced and cut walnut that would later become dining tables worth $30,000-$60,000. His cross-disciplinary learning approach highlights how entrepreneurs in any field can achieve extraordinary results by combining specialized knowledge with artistic sensibility and relentless pursuit of excellence.Ready to transform your kitchen or investment property with design that guarantees maximum value? In today's episode of the Master Series, we discuss the amazing Japanese Americana furniture designer and architect, George Nakashima, widely considered to be the father of slab furniture. George believed trees had a soul, and through the act of making furniture he was giving them a second life. His most famous pieces of furniture include live edge slab tables and benches with architecturally inspired bases, with clean lines almost evoking the peace and serenity of Zen Buddhism. Following George's death in 1990, his daughter Mira boldly led Nakashima Woodworkers forward into their new chapter. Today, we have the incredible fortune of having two VERY SPECIAL guests with us, Mira Nakashima, daughter of George Nakashima, and her grandson Toshi Amagasu who not only give us an inside look into Nakashima Furniture, but also inside their thriving family legacy. I wanted to re-air John Morris's podcast. I had him on episode 11 back in 2018. John recently passed and was such an interesting human being and I'm so happy that he took the time during Indian Market in 2018 to come talk to me about his life. You know, John was a guy who was intimately involved in the 1969 Woodstock show.He booked all the people he worked with, all the acts. You know, he was if you look at the Woodstock movie. He was a unique man who had multiple interests and never took himself too seriously. He had all these interesting people like Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison or Paul McCartney, at he Rolling Stones, all of these musicians he knew and worked with. I knew him for 15 years before he even discussed the Woodstock. The only reason he did is that I saw the movie and I saw him on the TV. His real gift to our culture and the Native American world was that he loved Native American material and tribal art and he, along with Kim Martindale, promoted shows. They promoted different shows that were the objects of art shows, both in San Francisco as well as in Santa Fe. ohn did one in Seattle as well. So, you know, it's sad when you lose somebody of his magnitude, but I wanted to replay his podcast so we could all bask in the wonderful beauty of John Morris.

In art and design circles, the name George Nakashima is synonymous with expert woodworking, exquisite furniture, and high-quality craftsmanship. Over the past 30-plus years, his daughter, the architect and furniture maker Mira Nakashima, has not only artfully built upon his techniques and time-honored traditions, further cementing his legacy, but also stepped outside of his shadow and carved a name for herself. Having worked full-time at George Nakashima Woodworkers since 1970, Mira took over as its president and creative director upon her father's death in 1990. Since then, she has carried on his unfinished projects, continued producing dozens of his designs, and also developed many of her own creations, including her Keisho and Shoki furniture lines. Through it all, Mira has remained as humble as ever and maintained a deep reverence for her father, his boundless creativity, and his exacting vision. On this episode, Nakashima talks about her family's time spent in a Japanese internment camp during World War II; the enduring “karma yoga” influence of the Indian philosopher and spiritual leader Sri Aurobindo, whom her father once studied under and worked for as an architect; and why her father considered his work “an antidote to the modern world.”Special thanks to our Season 8 sponsor, Van Cleef & Arpels.Show notes: [01:15] George Nakashima Woodworkers[03:39] Nakashima Foundation for Peace[03:43] George Nakashima[03:52] Altar for Peace at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine[04:08] Altar for Peace at the Russian Academy of Arts[04:14] Altar for Peace in Auroville, India[08:42] Hague Appeal for Peace[13:52] Sri Aurobindo[15:36] Bnai Keshet[15:45] St. Martin of Tours[15:50] Monastery of Christ in the Desert[15:58] Queen of Peace Chapel[17:14] Ivan Wyschnegradsky[17:22] Antonin Raymond[17:36] Golconde[21:00] George Nakashima Woodworker[23:07] Katsura Imperial Villa[23:26] Junzō Yoshimura[30:11] Udar Pinto[31:27] The Soul of a Tree[42:07] Nature Form & Spirit: The Life and Legacy of George Nakashima[45:22] The Krosnicks' furniture collection[49:54] Keisho collection[54:14] Shoki collection

Bio for Rick Thaler Rick Thaler was born and raised in Rochester New York. He tried going to college, but he didn't stick with it.  After looking for a job he was inspired by the Whole Earth Catalogue (WEC) and began to explore carpentry. His exploration of the carpentry trade led him to  Corrales, New Mexico. It was in Corrales that he decided to resume his studies and attended the University of New Mexico but after one semester he dropped out again and started working in construction, building adobe houses, doing carpentry work, and making furniture. He was inspired by James Krenov, Sam Maloof, and Wharton Esherick, and deeply inspired by George Nakashima and his free-form but highly disciplined designs. Rick was also inspired by the solar renaissance in New Mexico and the idea of sustainable, low-waste building and living. When Rick got married and his first child arrived he needed a reliable income and started working in a commercial wood shop. Eventually, he became a project manager and estimator, and after 10 years was able to buy the shop and ran the business on his own. Rick eventually grew the business into a $10 million-dollar-a-year business with 100 employees and did projects all over the southwest and around the country. Rick sold the business in 2019 and bought a portable sawmill to use as a hobby.  After all of his carpentry work, he still thought of George Nakashima and his creations. Rick's son Jacob got interested in the sawmill and they started a business together making live edge slab planks. They wound up building a woodworking shop to go with the mill. Rick came full circle to his roots of making custom furniture. This time he had better equipment and an ideal place to work. Live edge timber from local salvaged trees is now the backbone of their business. Rick and Jacob call it treeincarnation.net. They power the shop entirely with an array of solar panels. With all the carbon they are sequestering from tree rescues they are close to net carbon neutral in their business. Rick says they are a good example of combining sustainability, waste reduction, craft, and profitability for a right livelihood in environmentally difficult times.  Bio for Jacob Thaler Jacob Thaler was born and raised in Corrales New Mexico. He never liked school and struggled to learn the way other people do. At age 16 he took the GED test and got his high school diploma. He worked at various jobs but realized that he didn't want to work for someone else, so he opened his own business in Colorado. He had a successful business there from 2015 -2020. After finding that he had a daughter on the way he decided to sell his business and move back to New Mexico to be near family. Ariella was born right at the beginning of Covid, with a heart defect that required surgery at 10 days old. Jacob and his partner Angelica couldn't work because they were in and out of the hospital for the next year. Now their daughter Ariella is a happy, healthy three years old now. Jacob got interested in his dad's hobby sawmill operation between hospital appointments, and they discovered that they liked working together. Jacob enjoyed both the mechanical aspect of running the mill and the joy of opening up ordinary logs and finding the beauty inside. They decided to make a business out of the mill with a focus on turning dead, downed, and unwanted trees into planks for sale. This part of the business quickly led to a full-scale furniture operation, along with custom milling for other people in the business. Jacob still runs the saw and operates the kiln and is learning the furniture-making trade from his dad and their shop partner. He is looking forward to growing the business and keeping it sustainable for the future. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/plantatrilliontrees/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/plantatrilliontrees/support

No Vacancy Inn’s New Balance 650s are kicking off this episode’s lineup of sneaker drops with their 400 pairs exclusive release on StockX — 399, if you don’t count Jian’s pair (2:50). He shares a little background on the shoe, including the influence of the late designer and craftsman George Nakashima. (4:18). The hosts also dig into the inspiration behind the new print on Nike’s latest Air Foamposite One, which features the timely appearance of a silver dragon for Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (4:48). Following the premiere of ‘The Last Dance,’ certain sneakers have gone through a surge in popularity. The latest has been the Air Jordan 1 Chicago, with its resale price skyrocketing after the latest episode of the docuseries (6:03). Noah’s on the hunt for some Dennis Rodman and Scottie Pippen shoes, specifically the Air Pippen 2, which have been difficult to come by. Meanwhile, Jian’s planning to try his luck on getting a pair of the Royal Toe Jordan 1s dropping this weekend (7:24). Make sure to check out the Air Jordan ‘Why It’s Cool’ episode to learn about the shoe’s legacy through the words of designer Peter Moore and other industry figures.  The Nike Air Deschutz sandal has Noah and Jian divided, but the duo does agree on one thing about the shoe: you can bet on catching some street pharmacists wearing a pair, along with the Purple Metallic Nike Air Jordan 4s dropping later this month (8:58). Palace’s SS20 teaser opens up this week’s style news, showcasing a clean shirt with floral embroidery that seems very promising for Noah (11:26). While it’s difficult to envision the future beyond the current pandemic, this wasn’t the case for the courtroom sketch artist who Highsnobiety commissioned to draw fits for the 2020 Met Gala that never happened (13:05). Jian feels like there was a missed opportunity to dress up and sketch out Grimes and Elon Musk’s newborn baby arriving on the red carpet (14:30). He brings things back to Earth with Supreme x Barbour’s latest collection, which is great in theory, but goes awry when you think about the people you can see wearing it (15:25). Wrap up your week with ‘Vibe Check’ where Jian checks in with Murda Beatz who’s part of a new network he dubs the “MTV of gaming” as well as Team Epiphany’s Coltrane Curtis and Lisa Chu who speak on running their business and influencer marketing. Be sure to check in too by calling the Dropcast hotline at 833-HIGHSNOB (833-444-4766) to say what’s up. Two men, both architects -- one, Antonin Raymond was a Czech who came to America and worked for Frank Lloyd Wright and would become the father of Japanese modernism; and the other, a talented American of Japanese descent from Spokane, Washington, George Nakashima. These men's paths would dramatically cross a few times during their lives, and each time, their lives were changed. Design in America, Japan, India and the world, is better because of it. This is their story. At the Graham Foundation in Chicago until May 25, 2006, visit the exhibition about Antonin Raymond and George Nakashima's ashram dormitory building, Golconde: The Introduction of Modernism in India (www.grahamfoundation.org). The Sri Aurobindo Ashram allowed scholars access to the library and archives and all images and drawings were catalogued wih the Ashram's permission. The research team for Golconde comprised of Pankaj Vir Gupta, AIA and Christine Mueller, partners in the firm of vir.mueller architects (www.virmueller.com). Mira Nakashima's book, "Nature Form & Spirit: The Life and Legacy of George Nakashima," is a tribute to her father, his architecture and furniture, and his reverence for nature.
