Serghei Tvetcov is living with Leukemia. He was diagnosed with cancer in September 2022. He was racing with his Wildlife Generation Pro Cycling Team in the Tour of Romania when he got the results. He says he knew something wasn't right. Tvetcov simply couldn't put out the numbers he was used to doing. So he went and got tested. The test revealed he was living with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia. He says the result were a kick in the head. For treatment he takes chemo directed pills twice a day. Every three months he has a genetic test that shows him his response to the meds. He says it's a cancer that's not curable rather it's something he'll live with for the rest of his life. Tvetcov says he plans to race in 2024. His plans include racing gravel and spreading a message of survival. He wants folks who have the same disease to know you can live and thrive while living with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia. Also in this episode we also touch on his start in cycling, coming to America, racing in Italy, and France. And racing for the famous Gianni Savio.

The Giro d'Italia rolled out of Budapest on Friday morning and we were on the ground in Hungary to see it. An uphill finish at Visegrád castle promised drama and the stage certainly delivered. In the opening instalment of our post-stage Girovagando podcasts, we dissect the action with Hans Ruggenberg of De Telegraaf, hear from hometown hero Attila Valter, clairvoyant Giro ringmaster Gianni Savio and various other protagonists - and also update listeners on our bumbling “Quest for the Stuffed Cabbage”. There's, of course, plenty of talk about the flying Dutchman in pink - and why he began the day in a curious shade of another colour. We also hear from two of our three audio diarists for the Giro - Pavel Sivakov and James Knox - and reveal the identity of our third.

We lingered in Matera, the beautiful city where stage 6 of the Giro d'Italia finished and stage 7 started, with crosswinds forecast. They duly came, and, predictably, it was Deceuninck-Quickstep and Jumbo-Visma who went to the front and tore the race into pieces. In tonight's episode we hear from our diarist, James Knox of Deceuninck, about his sense of trepidation ahead of the stage. We also hear from another diarist, Jacopo Guarnieri, who once again delivered his Groupama-FDJ teammate Arnaud Démare to the win – Démare's third of this Giro. There are interviews with the young Belgian Harm Vanhoucke, who is riding high but crashed and found himself in the third group for a while, Matt White, the sports director of Mitchelton-Scott, who could be two men down after crashes, and Steven Kruijswijk and Addy Engels of Jumbo-Visma. And of course there's more from Gianni Savio, with his tactical masterplan for the day. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science in Sport.
In stage two of The Cycling Podcast’s Grandest Tour we are divided between Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Giro d’Italia. In Liège there was a victory for Primoz Roglic, and we have the reaction of the boss of his Jumbo-Visma team, Richard Plugge. In Italy, Diego Ulissi won his seventh Giro stage and we hear from his teammate, Joe Dombrowski. We also have a dispatch from another of our audio diarists, James Knox, an interview with Matt White and the White Feather; Gianni Savio. The Giro d’Italia finished in Verona with Richard Carapaz giving Ecuador its first Grand Tour win in front of thousands of his countrymen and women. In the final podcast from the Giro we hear from Carapaz’s fans and there are interviews with his team’s manager, Eusebio Unzuee and from the third-placed Primoz Roglic’s manager Richard Plugge. We also hear the best and worst from some of the riders in the Giro and from Hugh Carthy and our honorary Pedaleur de Charme, Gianni Savio. And we reprise one of the podcast’s finest moments, with Larry Warbasse reading a passage of Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms. The Cycling Podcast is supported by Rapha and Science in Sport. A surprise winner and a skirmish between the overall contenders marked the seventeenth stage of the Giro d’Italia, which saw the race enter the German speaking part of Italy. In the podcast Richard Moore and Daniel Friebe are joined by Ciro Scognamiglio and there are interviews with Mikel Landa, Hugh Carthy, Esteban Chaves, Larry Warbasse, Ben O’Connor and a very frustrated and disappointed Bob Jungels, whose Giro has not gone according to plan. We also hear Gianni Savio’s latest tactical masterclass and eavesdrop on a Slovenian cycling fan berating Primoz Roglic’s sports director at the finish. The Giro d’Italia began its northward journey on Friday with a stage to L’Aquila in the mountains of Abruzzo, ten years after one of Italy’s worst ever earthquakes ravaged the region and the day’s finish-town in particular. Having been abandoned by Lionel, Daniel Friebe rounds up the cream of the Giro’s international press pack to dissect the day’s action, which culminated in a stage victory for Pello Bilbao of Astana. Meanwhile, the overnight leader, Valerio Conti, overcame a few nervous moments to preserve his lead on the overall standings. There are interviews with local boy Dario Cataldo, one of the stars of the stage, Davide Formolo, and of course our near-daily update from the inimitable Gianni Savio, manager of the Androni Giocattoli - Sidermec team. **The Cycling Podcast is supported by Rapha and Science in Sport.**
The Giro d’Italia headed to San Giovanni Rotondo, one of Italy’s most important religious centres, and stage six of the race gave the host nation its first stage victory and pink jersey of 2019. Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe recap another long day in the saddle for the bunch, and welcome the sight of some sunshine after yesterday’s cold rain. Gianni Savio’s star rider Fausto Masnada won the stage, beating Valerio Conte at the finish, although Conti had the significant consolation of taking the race lead from Primoz Roglic. We speculate on how long Conti might keep the jersey now, plus wrap up all the day’s talking points. The Cycling Podcast is supported by Rapha and Science in Sport.
For the second day in a row, the Giro d’Italia served up crash-related drama in the final half dozen kilometres. Join Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe for a glass of Frascati after the finish of stage four as they discuss who lost and who gained. The stage was won by Movistar’s Ecuadorian rider Richard Carapaz, who won a stage in impressive style last year. We hear from Australian Caleb Ewan of Lotto-Soudal who was one of only a dozen or so to dodge both late crashes and who set off in pursuit of Carapaz in the final three hundred metres. We ask whether Tom Dumoulin’s crash means the end of not just his Giro d’Italia hopes but his participation in the race, we hear from Team Ineos’s Tao Geogheghan Hart about the time he lost yesterday, Gianni Savio reveals his formation for the stage and we taste some Frascati wine, some wine that’s not Frascati and a local delicacy, a three-breasted honey-bread woman. The Cycling Podcast is supported by Rapha and Science in Sport.
Stage three of the 2019 Giro d’Italia took the riders from the birthplace of Leonardo Da Vinci to Orbetello, with the wind and threat of rain making the peloton nervous. Join Lionel Birnie, Daniel Friebe and Ciro Scognamiglio in Orbetello as they discuss the day’s big controversial moment – the relegation of Italian champion Elia Viviani for irregular sprinting. Viviani’s victory was handed to the second man across the line, Fernando Gaviria. As tears of joy turned to frustration for Viviani’s dad, who was watching in his camper van at the finish, we ask whether it was the right decision. Mario Cipollini’s former lead-out Mario Scirea made a bid to be considered cycling’s Arsene Wenger, claiming not to have seen the incident. We wrap up a tricky day for the overall contenders and their teammates, hearing from Mitchelton-Scott’s Simon Yates and Luke Durbridge and Miguel Angel Lopez’s climbing domestique Dario Cataldo. Gianni Savio reveals his cycling formation, we meet a former refugee turned professional cyclist and much more in a podcast that’s packed despite the relative lack of action in the stage.
