Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Alan Minskoff discuss Edoardo Ballerini's narration of Amor Towles's newest short story collection. By turns nuanced and dramatic, Golden Voice Ballerini uses his full range of techniques always in service of the author's fine prose. His smart pace and rich tone work particularly well for the noir novella set in late 1930s Hollywood. Ballerini shines in the opening work, “New York: The Line,” about an average Russian, named Pushkin, who has a gift for helping others with Russia's long food lines. These stories have Towles's touch: finely detailed characters, distinct settings, and deserved comeuppances. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. Published by Penguin Audio. This episode will make you rethink the way you think about authenticity and personal branding - that is, the way you show up in the world. Laura Ballerini is a seasoned creative who has been running a thriving communications firm for over 20 years. During that time, she has become the “perspective shifter.” She is not defined by her design talents, but rather, how she applies unique solutions to client “pain points.” Through strategic communication, tactics, and seamless execution, solutions are inspired by a shift in thinking. Author of The Green Velvet Chair, Laura has written a collection of heartfelt stories depicting how art and design influence and spur creativity not only in our work, but in our everyday lives. Laura has a degree in Visual Communications from The Alberta University of the Arts and is a recipient of numerous awards. While she is a quiet and introverted executive, Laura has recently found her inner badass and radiates her “quietly fierce” disposition in her work and her life. Ballerini lives in Calgary, Alberta with her husband, two daughters, one son-in-law, a granddaughter, and a pretentious cat named Gooey. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Laura's journey of self-improvement and the realization that personal branding is based on inner values, not just external appearance Maintaining one's essence despite external changes Laura's achievements in visual communications Laura's experience of creating titles and covers for their book and seeking feedback Sources of inspiration for content creation The importance of authentic and relatable presentation style Laura's desire to connect with her audience Tapping into universal experiences through the book The power of joining a networking group and overcoming shyness What it means to embrace the tagline "let the quiet ones tell their stories" Links Mentioned in This Episode: Website | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Linked In
If you've never had, or never known someone with an eating disorder, you might not feel like this episode applies to you. We promise you, it does, it applies to all of us. Because when it comes to eating disorders, it just feels so simple. Why can't this person just start (or stop) eating? But what if we told you it has very little to do with eating, and everything to do with how the brain sees the body? In this month's deep-dive episode, Laine walks us through the science behind the deadliest diagnosis in mental health. Using findings from scientists Riva, Southgate, Tchanturia, Treasure, Stanghellini, Ballerini, and Mancini we discuss things like: how the brain understands the body how this can and will rewire the brain why its so hard to stop a major takeaway to not only help stop unnecessary death but also change society and create more beauty and self-empowerment in our lives A small disclaimer: We will be connecting the research to understanding eating disorders to what we learned in both the Neuroscience of Depression and the Neuroscience of Addiction if you want to check those out ahead of time. Michael Finkel narrates the opening of his audiobook, a memorable portrait of Stéphane Breitwieser, the sly European thief who pilfered nearly $2 billion in art objects. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Michele Cobb discuss Edoardo Ballerini's smooth, enticing narration of the rest of the audiobook, making it a true-crime listen that is easy to devour. Breitwieser's story is dramatic, highly cinematic, but ultimately sad. It is a compelling and shocking listen, and Ballerini's skill and artistry with his narration heightens the mood. Narrator Edoardo Ballerini immerses listeners in a lost world with André Aciman's 1996 memoir. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Alan Minskoff discuss how Ballerini brings this memoir of Aciman's boyhood to life. The author longs for his home in cosmopolitan Alexandria, Egypt, and Ballerini masterfully portrays the characters, especially his quirky grandmothers, and ensures the other members of his lively Sephardic Jewish family come through vividly. A classic story of a family who lost everything in the fraught years after 1956, when President Nasser expelled English and French nationals and Jews from their homes in Egypt. Kelsea Ballerini is readying to release her fifth studio album, Subject To Change, and anticipation is at an all-time high. Ahead of the album's September 23 release, Kelsea sat down with Audacy's Rob + Holly to chat all about the ‘90s-inspired project, the inspiration behind it and the tea surrounding what's sure to be the most talked about song. “It's such an interesting feeling to put a record out,” Kelsea said of the albums approaching release date. “It's such a mix of an exhale and also feeling an intense amount of nerves of just, ‘Oh, it's not mine anymore.' I hope people like it.” Inspired by ‘90s Country and some of her biggest idols like, Shania Twain, Faith Hill and Trisha Yearwood, Ballerini says fans can expect her most “upbeat and breezy” album yet. While the sounds may be light and airy, the 29-year-old makes sure to clarify it still has depth. “With a title like that, I really wanted to dive into the growth of my last couple of years of life,” she said. “It's the most upbeat, breezy sounding record I've ever gotten to put out, or that I've ever made, but I think there's more meat on the bones than ever before too.” Kelsea continued on to chat about a song she knows will be “talked about” titled, “Doin' My Best.” While she didn't give much context to the song's exact topic, she revealed it references Pop star Halsey, and by he sounds of it, some tea is about to be spilled. “It is not meant to be a shady lyric,“ Kelsea said openly. “It's the idea of taking ownership of my cringe. I wanted to acknowledge all of the things that people have watched happen in my life and just go, ‘Yup. Here's the messiness, I'm owning it, I'm doing my best.'” Hear more about the new album as well as some behind the scenes about her recent Shania Train-inspired performance in her conversation with Rob + Holly above.

When first-time author and full-time business owner Laura Ballerini sat down to write some stories, she didn't anticipate the transformation that would take place inside her soul. From a very young age, Laura was introduced to art through her mother's skill with crafting, fixing, and cooking. Now, as a graphic designer, Laura realizes just how endemic art is to all our lives. In this episode, we discuss the impact of art, how she found time to fit writing into an already busy creative life and the power of story. Visit Laura's website.
