In this week's episode, Caley, Jonny, Kit, and Dane dissect Mark Cavendish's recent "retirement" from professional cycling and the unbroken kayfabe (the practice of pretending staged events are real) of his final "race."Then the crew explore the uncertain future of Astana, which faces potential relegation. The hosts discuss Astana's recent hiring of Alex Dowsett as their aero expert, noting a growing British influence within the team. This leads to speculation about whether Cavendish might join Astana in a non-riding role, further fueling the team's "British invasion."Plus! The ongoing controversy surrounding a spectator who threw beer on Eli Iserbyt during the Koppenbergcross race. Iserbyt is pursuing legal action against the individual, sparking a debate about appropriate fan behavior and the boundaries of sportsmanship. And the crew discuss the challenges teams face in nurturing young riders while also maximizing their competitive potential and preventing burnout.

This week's Performance Process is the first in a series delving into how and why World Tour racing is getting so fast. Year after year we see average records increase and record times tumble.Alex Dowsett is our guest on this week's podcast. Alex is a former pro, former World Hour record holder, the only known elite professional sportsman with haemophilia, not to mention six time British National Time Trial champion, two time Giro stage winner, and YouTuber. Having been a pro for 12 years, it's safe to say Dowsett is well qualified to talk us through the advancements that have resulted in greatly increasing speeds. Dowsett kicks off the discussion on this topic with some direct insight into an accidental analysis he conducted on his own progression throughout his own pro career and how results in an event he has done since he was a kid correlate with the advancing World Tour peloton. Dowsett gives us a break down of some of the hows and whys. We will now take this list and begin a deep dive series looking into each in all our geeky detail. The Performance Process is a members-only podcast from Escape Collective. Before retiring from cycling last year, Alex Dowsett was the only known elite sportsperson with haemophilia to compete in an able-bodied field. He's now setting his sights on the London Marathon to raise money for his charity, Little Bleeders (littlebleeders.com), and shares some inspiring lessons from his remarkable career.Co-hosts Rick and Ben also share the expert approved seven strength moves all runners need to do (see below for details)Dr Richard Blagrove is one of the foremost experts in strength and conditioning, having worked with some of the UK's top runners at St Mary's and Loughborough universities. So when Blagrove was asked, on Matthew Boyd's The Adaptive Zone podcast, what the seven best strength exercises are for runners, his answers are worth noting down. Here's what he said:1. A squat-type movement, such as a front squat or back squat.2. A hinge-hip movement pattern, such as a Romanian deadlift or a deadlift from the ground.3. A stepping movement pattern, such as a barbell or dumbbell step-up (try holding the dumbbell only in one hand to challenge your trunk).4. A lunge pattern, such as a split squat5. Loaded single leg calf-raise or a calf-press hold on a leg press.6. Pull-ups on a bar7. Standard press-upsFor a gold star, add in some deadbug exercises, which will recruit your hip flexors a little bit more. Do these exercises twice a week to see the benefits. If you struggle to fit in two whole workouts, consider doing 10-15 minutes a day, with the aim of accumulating the same amount of work per week as two full sessions. In terms of reps, for novices, Blagrove recommends 10-12. As you become more trained, you can vary the repetition ranges. For instance, you could try a more maximal block, where you go as low as 3 reps. And then work a bit more in the middle ground, between 5-10 reps.By the end of each exercise, aim to be on a perceived exertion level of about 8 out of 10. ‘That will tell me they've got maybe two or three repetitions in reserve, which is about right,' said Blagrove. ‘You're working hard but not to complete failure.' Alex Dowsett is a recent retiree after a dozen years in cycling's professional ranks where he tallied 15 victories, including 2 in grand tours; Alex set the world hour record, owns two Commonwealth Games medals (gold and silver, since you asked), and probably has a dozen other accolades omitted here. He's a father, soon to be married to his fiance Chanel, and does tremendous work with the organization he created, Little Bleeders, helping young kids diagnosed with hemophilia. This conversation hits on all that and loads more. Check out Alex: www.instagram.com/alexdowsett www.littlebleeders.com And his YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@AlexDowsettOfficial

Matt Stephens and Alex Dowsett enjoy catching up in the neutral zone of this podcast, before getting down to brass tacks. With his incredible pro cycling career coming to an end with Israel Premier Tech, Alex reflects on how the time felt right to move on to the next chapter with lots of exciting media and business ventures to look forward to. With some great advice on how to use a power meter to best effect, and a deep-dive analysis of how he could outperform his teammates on time trials while pushing fewer watts, Alex is a firm believer in racing with your head, not your legs.

This time on Faster, I'm talking about the Hour Record. And I'm talking about it with a stellar group of guests, including current record-holders Ellen van Dijk and Victor Campenaerts, as well as former holders Joss Lowden, Molly Van Houweling and Alex Dowsett. The Hour is the simplest challenge in cycling – how far you can ride on a track, on your own, in one hour. There are no tactics, or teammates, just you and what you've got. And while it's simple, it has a reputation as just about the toughest thing you can subject yourself to on a bike. Even the great Eddy Merckx said it was the longest hour of his entire career, and that he'd suffered as never before. We look at what makes it so difficult – the challenges of pacing, and the unrelenting pressure of riding at full effort with no snatches of rest, no chances to move on the bike. There's the question of how you train for something so unique, something that only a tiny handful of riders have ever even attempted. And what can you learn from it – does the Hour make you a better rider back in the world of normal racing? We talk about failure too, because Hour attempts can and do go horribly wrong. What's it like to square up to something as black-and-white as the Hour and not quite make it? More than one of my guests tells me that a record attempt that fails is a much worse experience than one that succeeds, not just emotionally, but physically. It's the most important record in cycling, and it's a great way to kick off the second season of Faster. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Joe's mentality is that no one, not even the dominant Norwegians and Kristian Blummenfelt is unbeatable.   Dual Olympic champion and Sub7 aspirant Alistair Brownlee has been ruled out of the Pho3nix Sub7Sub8 Project, powered by Zwift due to a stress response in his hip that requires immediate treatment. Brownlee will be replaced by fellow Brit and PTO world number six Joe Skipper who takes his shot at making history against reigning Olympic and World Champion Kristian Blummenfelt on Sunday at the DEKRA Lausitzring in Senftenberg, Germany.   It is a cruel blow for Brownlee, who along with MANA Group CEO and Pho3nix Foundation board member Chris McCormack was part of the initial team that developed the concept of delivering the first sub-7 hour full distance triathlon in late 2019.   “We are extremely disappointed with the announcement, but when you are pushing your body to the limit like Alistair has been, it's a fine line,” said McCormack. ‘Alistair is a true professional and will be there to support Joe, who has been preparing for Ironman Nice at the end of June, so in good shape to take on the challenge.''   ‘It's not going to get easier with Joe', said Blummenfelt. ‘He has a better full distance resume and a higher world ranking than Alistair. I'm looking forward to the challenge.'   “Honestly, I'm devastated, said Brownlee. ‘I was frustrated to miss St George, and now this. I'm gutted. I was so invested in the process and loved working with my team. This was the goal that stimulated me again in the sport, on par with the Olympics. I'll do what I can to support Joe.”   Brownlee, who also missed the recent Ironman World Championships in Utah, will support Skipper by pacing him in the swim, and will also join the commentary team for the live broadcast on Sub7Sub8.com. Brownlee replaces Richard Varga on Skipper's team, with Jonny Brownlee also dropping out to be replaced by German national marathon champion Frank Schauer. In this week's episode Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe discuss Alex Dowsett's Hour record attempt. Dowsett held the record back in 2015, before Bradley Wiggins broke it, and he aimed to win it back from the current holder Victor Campenaerts in Mexico this week. He fell just short but he won a lot of admirers for raising awareness of haemophilia, a condition he has overcome to reach the top of his sport, and for putting together the team for his record attempt himself. What does his near-miss mean for the record and who will go for it next? In part two, we talk about the 2022 Giro d'Italia grande partenza in Hungary. Postponed from 2020 because of the pandemic, Budapest will finally host the start of the Giro next May and the three stages unveiled this week by the organisers look more promising than the original plans. With the Giro route being unveiled bit-by-bit over the course of a week has the race lost something without a 'big reveal'? And what else might Italy's grand tour have in store? Finally, Lionel talks about his weekend trip to Belgium to see the Koppenbergcross. We hear from 'cross legend Sven Nys to take the current temperature of the scene and the possibility of Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert returning later in the season. Alex rode for the same team in 2010, before moving on to Sky, Movistar, Katusha-Alpecin and Israel Start-up Nation and winning, among other things, two stages of the Giro d'Italia and almost as many national time-trial championships as me. We look at the pressures on young riders, who have just two or three seasons to plot the biggest move of their whole careers. It's a transition that has been made all the harder as Covid ravages their racing programme, and by changing demands in the World Tour – as Alex puts it, “Directors aren't looking for under-23s anymore, they're looking for children. They all want to find the next Remco Evenepoel.” We discuss how to balance your own long-term development with the immediate need to attract attention, how you manage issues like body weight when you might be under pressure from coaches with a rather short-term view of your usefulness, and how you learn to not just ride like a pro, but live like a pro as well. (A base in Girona helps, apparently.) And we hear how the current scramble for young talent might have led a top-level team to sign a rider based entirely on the results from a dodgy power meter. --------------------------- If you liked this episode of Faster, please tell your friends about it. In this week's episode we look at two high profile figures who are returning to old haunts. Mark Cavendish is going back to Deceuninck-Quick Step, the team with which he spent three successful seasons earlier in his career, while in an even more surprising move, his old mentor, Rod Ellingworth, is returning to Team Ineos after just a year in charge at Bahrain-McLaren. In a week full of major news stories, Lionel Birnie, Daniel Friebe and Richard Moore discuss the moves by Cavendish and Ellingworth, as well as Team Sunweb's rebranding as Team DSM for 2021. The new sponsorship took everybody by surprise but we hear from the man who did the deal, team boss Iwan Spekenbrink, as well as the team's veteran Irishman, Nicolas Roche. We also have an interview with Cherie Pridham, who will be the first female sports director at a World Tour team when she takes the reins at Israel Startup Nation, a team that in 2021 will include Chris Froome, Michael Woods and Sep Vanmarcke as well as Dan Martin and Alex Dowsett.  The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca (https://www.iwoca.co.uk/) and Science in Sport (https://www.scienceinsport.com/) . In this week's episode of the Cyclingnews podcast there's an exclusive interview with Daniel Martin from Israel Start-Up Nation while we also continue our WorldTour report cards with Ineos Grenadiers and ISN under the spotlight.   Ineos won the Giro d'Italia with Tao Geoghegan Hart, bombed at the Tour de France and came second in the Vuelta a Espana. They won 19 races in total and obviously the standout ride was the Giro, where they bounced back from losing Geraint Thomas to win seven stages wins and the maglia rosa.   They were well below their typical best at the Tour, were forced into late line-up changes before seeing Egan Bernal falter in the mountains. There was a stage win for Michal Kwiatkowski but in the build up to the Tour they were off the pace in races like the Dauphine and their Classics campaign was quiet, even by their standards. Over at Israel Start-Up Nation the team won two stages in Grand Tours, courtesy of Daniel Martin and Alex Dowsett. They had nine difference winners in fact, and took fourth overall in the Vuelta and while the caliber of their wins wasn't huge – only two were at WorldTour – the team showed signs of promise and progress.   We analyse both teams' seasons, before Procycling's Edward Pickering, who used to be a teacher, hands out grades for each team.   The Cyclingnews Podcast is brought to you by Sportful and Pinarello. The Giro d’Italia had a transitional stage for the sprinters and we had a transitional podcast too, with Lionel Birnie joining Richard Moore to recap stage 11. With sprint finishes in Rimini and in Schoten at the Scheldeprijs, the question is, who’s the fastest? Arnaud Démare – who took his fourth stage victory of this Giro – or Caleb Ewan, who won in Belgium? We hear from Jacopo Guarnieri of Groupama-FDJ after another seamless leadout for Démare, and from Elia Viviani, who was knocked off by a motorbike, a moment of misfortune that sums up his season. We also hear from stage eight’s victor, Alex Dowsett, who has settled back into support duties for his Israel Start-Up Nation team, and from Atilla Valter, the Hungarian riding his first grand tour. With Daniel Friebe absent, no one was available to remind Lionel of the incident at last year’s Giro when they recorded an entire episode of the podcast only to discover that the recording equipment had been on the wrong setting, meaning they had to start from scratch, which in turn meant they missed out on a sumptuous dinner and had to settle for a rushed pizza. It's time trial day for Our Giro and we look back to the 2013 race and remember the day Alex Dowsett gave Great Britain a stage win they perhaps expected Bradley Wiggins to deliver. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe return refreshed after a virtual rest day with another packed episode. After two years with Team Sky, Dowsett switched to Movistar and the 2013 Giro gave him his first taste of grand tour racing. A tough opening week (is there any other sort at the Giro?) concluded with a 54.8-kilometre time trial. Bradley Wiggins, Team Sky's leader and the reigning Tour de France champion, was the pre-race favourite and the expectation was that he'd get a faltering Giro campaign back on track with a blistering ride against the clock. But Dowsett, one of the earlier starters, set a time that would prove to be untouchable – despite a few nervous moments watching in the hot seat. Hear how he and Movistar prepared for the stage and get under the skin of what it's really like on time trial day at the Giro. In this episode, there's also a Roman pasta cook-off, judged by Felicity Cloake. Are you Team Carbonara or Team Amatriciana? And what goes in an authentic carbonara. In 2010, Richie Porte was a first-year professional and rode the Giro d'Italia for Saxo Bank. After a promising sixth place in the opening time trial in Amsterdam he spent the first half of the race comfortably inside the top ten. Then came the stage to L'Aquila, which had been hit by a terrible earthquake the previous year. A huge break got away and gained a lot of time. Porte was in it and ended the day in the pink jersey. We hear from Porte about that Giro and the stage to L'Aquila in particular. Join Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe for a rest day. There's no stage to ride but this episode features a look back at last year's rest day when Richard and Daniel were beseiged by cats seeking to steal their pre-podcast crisps, Lionel cooks the traditional Abruzzese lunch of arrosticini (lamb skewers) and Ciro Scognamiglio adds another rider to his Giro dream team. The full Richie Porte interview will be available for Friends of the Podcast soon. The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science In Sport. “I like the purity of the time trial; the fastest guy wins” - Alex DowsettFresh from coming 5th in the World Championship Time Trials, professional cyclist Alex Dowsett joins Callum Skinner and Philip Hindes in the mobile PodCrash studio at the World Champs in Harrogate. A specialist in the Time Trial event and a pro cyclist for Team Katusha Alpecin, Dowsett has had a varied career in cycling so far. With stints at Team Sky and Movistar, he gives us an insight into his cycling career and how he also deals with having the rare blood condition, hemophilia, as an athlete. After the news (Skinner’s GB bike is still missing), Hindes and Skinner ask Dowsett about the preparation he undertook leading up to this latest Time Trial, where he explains his mindset of improving himself, as opposed to chasing the competition. Find out more about how this athlete splits races and builds his cycling strategy on power and feel.We talk about the confines of wearing and using a sponsor’s equipment, as well as the differences in culture, methodology and gear between Team Sky (now Ineos) and Movistar. Dowsett then explains how having hemophilia, a disorder that stops blood from clotting normally, has shaped his career. Having to stay away from sports like football and rugby, he started swimming, which set him up as a successful cyclist. Now an expert Time Trial racer, he explains more about administering his medication in front of other athletes and bringing awareness to the condition that affects only 1 in 5000 people in the UK. “The hemophilia put me here” - DowsettThen it’s onto the opportunities and mishaps of social media. He shares one of his most controversial tweets with us and gives his opinion on why being social media-savvy and ‘marketable’ shouldn’t be a factor in securing a cycling contract. We wrap up by asking him about the future of his current team, Team Katusha Alpecin, and whether or not Tokyo is on the cards...Show us the love by subscribing, rating and reviewing PodCrash. Most other professional cyclists leave where they grew up to live and train in more predictable climates, but not Alex. Growing up with haemophilia (his blood doesn’t clot on its own) means his family is very close-knit, and despite living and racing all over the place, the county to the east of London remains home.
