Who better to wrap up the cobbles and preview the Ardennes with than my old mates Luke Durbridge and Tom Southam right here on this month's Race Communiqué.   We kick this month's episode off by rounding up the Spring so far; from Pogačar's dominance at Flanders right through to Van Aert's redemption at Paris Roubaix, there's been heaps of racing to get stuck into. One race I didn't manage to follow too closely was the Tour of the Basque Country, where young Paul Seixas absolutely dominated from start to finish. Fortunately, Southam was there on the ground in the EF team car, so he gives us the scoop from Spain, and just how good Seixas really is.    The Ardennes classics have already kicked off, with Remco Evenepoel dusting Skjelmose in the sprint to win the Amstel Gold Race. Southam was in the convoy dealing with a unique….pretty gross situation that he's never come across in his career. Safe to say Remco's shape is ominous ahead of Liège - the 4th monument of the year - which is only a few days away. With Pog, Remco, and Seixas all on the start list it looks like we're in for an epic showdown. We go through the course and pick our favourites.   Durbo's just got back after a few days off the bike following Paris Roubaix, and that's what this month's PeloChat is all about; keeping mentally fresh and taking time away from cycling. As you all know by now, Luke's just announced that he's hanging up the wheels after national champs in January 2027. He's riding out a long, distinguished career of 15 years - so this advice is worth listening to.   Talking Tactics is all about that head to head to head we're getting hyped about at Liège-Bastogne-Liège; how do Remco and Seixas overthrow Pogi who, on paper, is probably the favourite. Een groot aantal deelnemers aan de toertocht van zaterdag kwam vrijdagavond in het Shimano Experience Center langs voor de live-opname van de Wielerflits Podcast, waarin koersdirecteur Leo van Vliet en zijn opvolger Tom Dumoulin te gast waren. Je kan de podcast nu kijken en luisteren!Het was gezellig druk op het plein voor het Shimano Experience Center en ook binnen liep het vol. Te midden van al die drukte namen wij om 18.00 uur de live podcast op met Van Vliet en Dumoulin. Waarom pakt de koersdirecteur zijn afscheid zo groots aan? En wat doet het hem dat dit weekend grotendeels in het teken staat van 30 jaar Leo van Vliet? Het zorgt voor tranen in de ogen van de organisator.Tom Dumoulin is vanaf 2027 de koersdirecteur van 'De Amstel' en heeft al ideeën over hoe hij dat wil gaan aanpakken. In de podcast vertelt hij daarover. Waar Dumoulin geen voorstander van is, is gravel in de wedstrijd. Het is een thema dat in de recente geschiedenis van de Amstel Gold Race wel is voorbijgekomen, erkent Van Vliet. Zo passeren nog meer anekdotes de revue; over uitgescholden worden en gemeentehuizen die kort en klein geslagen werden. Verslaggever Raymond Kerckhoffs zat toen op de eerste rij.Een flinke discussie laaide op toen presentator Maxim Horssels het onderwerp 'zesde monument in het wielrennen' ter sprake bracht. Op welke plek staat de Gold Race als er nu een extra monument moet worden aangewezen? Leo van Vliet en Tom Dumoulin gaan fel in tegen de stelling dat Strade Bianche misschien wel eerder genoemd gaat worden. Een daadwerkelijke conclusie kwam daar niet. Tot slot stonden natuurlijk de wedstrijden van dit weekend bij de mannen en vrouwen centraal. Hebben de koersdirecteuren een voorkeur? In een koers die nu waarschijnlijk al de boeken in kan als de mooiste van dit jaar won Wout van Aert eindelijk een van zijn gedroomde monumenten. Sterk, slim, tactisch goed en met de juiste drive pakte hij op de wielerbaan in Roubaix de zege die bijna heel de wereld hem gunt. Sander Valentijn, Jeroen Vanbelleghem, Jan Hermsen en Bobbie Traksel blikken uitgebreid terug op deze emotionele overwinning. Ze bespreken hoe ‘Wout' het mentaal deze Roubaix anders aanpakte dan voorgaande jaren en hoe de tactische keuzes van Visma – Lease a Bike medebepalend waren voor de overwinning. Verder bespreken we natuurlijk de effecten van de lekke banden van Pogacar en Van der Poel op het koersverloop.
