What does it take to create and maintain one of the largest repositories of botanical information in the world? For starters, it can mean helicopter-ing into remote nooks of the Amazon, hiking through rough terrain, looking for strange fruits and flowers, and climbing trees to pluck specimens from the branches. Then there's all the science required to identify, classify, and codify those species. Botanists Lúcia Lohmann and Charlotte Taylor join Host Flora Lichtman to discuss their work discovering new plant species and maintaining the storied Missouri Botanical Garden. And, what does it mean to be a superfood? What is the science of micronutrient-dense foods like millet, which get less hype than foods like açaí, goji berries, and quinoa? Flora talks with biological engineer Kiruba Krishnaswamy, who puts food under a microscope—literally—and studies the nutrients that help make our bodies function, in hopes of harnessing them to fight hunger worldwide.Guests: Dr. Lúcia Lohmann, professor at Washington University in St. Louis, and president and director of the Missouri Botanical GardenDr. Charlotte Taylor, botanist and senior curator at the Missouri Botanical Garden Dr. Kiruba Krishnaswamy, assistant professor in the Colleges of Engineering and Agriculture at the University of MissouriTranscript will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Die Kirchen hierzulande haben ein Imageproblem. Immer wieder kommen neue Missbrauchsfälle ans Licht. Matthias Lohmann ist u.a.

After a sea turtle hatchling scurries down the beach and plunges into the waves, it vanishes into the ocean, remaining incognito for the next few years. This early period of a sea turtle's life history, often referred to as the 'lost years', has long intrigued scientists, leaving many questions about this mysterious stage.Where do these hatchlings go? And when do they transition from being 'lost' to 'found'?"The majority of flatback hatchlings are retained in the neritic environment, or what we call the shallow waters of the coast", explains Dr. Sean Williamson, a Field Biologist and Researcher at Monash University, Australia. "As opposed to loggerhead hatchlings on the East Coast of USA, which drift in the Gulf Stream all the way across to the other side of the Atlantic Ocean until they get around in line with France".But how do these tiny travelers navigate such long journeys?Tune in to the fifth episode of Sea Turtle Stories as Dr. Sean delves into the 'lost years' of sea turtles. He reveals insights from his research, covering everything from hatchling dispersal patterns and their extraordinary navigational skills to the innovative technologies used to uncover these mysteries.Links For Additional Reading:Life Cycle of Sea Turtles by Olive Ridley ProjectWilson, P., Pattiaratchi, C., Whiting, S., Ferreira, L. Persistent Organic Pollutants: you don't need a Ph.D. in chemistry to recognize realize they are dangerous. But Dr. Rainer Lohmann has been studying POPs for some time and their danger to the environment and human beings. Lohmann's research combines marine organic geochemistry and environmental chemistry to study recalcitrant organic compounds, including persistent organic pollutants on the molecular level. He has led Superfund Research Center at the University of Rhode Island since 2018, one among roughly 20 nationwide. The Center is a collaboration with scientists from Harvard University and the Silent Spring Institute. It focuses on the Sources, Transport, Exposure and Effects of PFASs—poly- and perfluorinated alkyl substances. Lohmann has engaged decision-makers by working with scientists from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Environment Canada to advance the use of novel sampling devices to better characterize fluxes of organic pollutants in water and air. Lohmann is currently one of several scientists from around the world coordinating the AQUA-GAPS program, a joint effort with the Czech Republic's RECETOX initiative at Masaryk University, which conducts research and education around managing the environmental and health risks associated with the chemicals around us. The AQUA-GAPS program promotes the use of passive samplers for legacy and emerging organic contaminants in the waters of the world is now underway.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
