In episode 40 of the Golf Beneath the Surface Podcast, we kick off Part 1 of our two-part post-Masters MEGA Q&A. We start with some fun: where players actually use the bathroom at Augusta, and the ongoing (and slightly heated) debate about the famous pimento cheese sandwich. From there, we dig into the heart of the episode — the mental game. We answer listener questions on why bad shots stick in our memory, whether it's useful to recall great shots after a round, and how to use visualization in a way that actually helps you handle nerves and adversity on the course. We also talk about how to process bad rounds without spiraling, why “faking confidence” through body language doesn't work, where to put your focus over the ball, and when (or if) weekly golf lessons are actually worth it. Part 2 coming next week!

Send us a textDiscover why your mental approach might be sabotaging your golf game with renowned sports psychologist Dr. Raymond Pryor. In this profound exploration of golf psychology, we uncover the concept of "stable confidence" – self-given permission to perform freely without guarantees – and how it transforms performance under pressure.Dr. Pryor, author of “Golf Beneath the Surface”, challenges conventional wisdom about golf psychology, explaining why common practices like distraction techniques and positive self-talk often fail long-term. Instead, he reveals how acceptance of uncertainty and potential failure actually creates the psychological space needed to access your best skills when it matters most. This counterintuitive approach explains why you might play brilliantly after a terrible front nine – you've finally accepted your situation instead of resisting it.One of the most powerful insights concerns the relationship between identity and performance. When we attach our self-worth to being "a good golfer," we create an unsustainable psychological burden that manifests as anxiety during important rounds. Dr. Pryor offers a more sustainable alternative: building identity around action-oriented traits rather than outcomes we can't fully control.Whether you're struggling with performance anxiety, inconsistency, or simply want to enjoy golf more deeply, this episode provides practical wisdom for transforming your relationship with the game. Dr. Pryor's approach isn't just about shooting lower scores – it's about finding freedom, authenticity and joy in the process, regardless of outcomes. What would it feel like to step onto the first tee completely comfortable in your own skin, accepting all possible outcomes while still fully committed to playing your best? That's the question at the heart of this conversation – and the answer might change your game forever. Thank you to Mizzuno Golf and JumboMax Grips. To reach us, Justin@elitegolfswing.comJesse@flaghuntersgolf.com OR (831)275-8804Raymond, www.golfbeneththesurface.com

The ultimate mental game skill Today on the Mind Caddie we welcome back my good friend and colleague Dr Raymond Prior. Raymond is one of the top performance consultants in the world. He works with some of the very best golfers in the world on the PGA Tour as well as athletes from many other sports and also actors and entertainers. He is the author of a wonderful book ‘Golf Beneath the surface' We also co contributed to a great program called: ‘Stable Confidence' The foundations of stable confidence are a willingness to accept ALL and EVERY possible outcome you may face in a round or in a tournament. In today's conversation we deepen the understanding of developing the skill of ACCEPTANCE We discuss what acceptance is and perhaps more importantly what it isn't. It is not giving up or resignation It is not being ‘happy' with poor outcomes It is not feeling comfortable all the time It is a willingness to embrace the REALITY of the game Why your brain is ‘primed' to focus on avoidance Your brain doesn't care about golf it cares about SURVIVAL How can we begin to work with and understand this? How can we actually develop acceptance skills? Yoga and cold water, what is the link? Why being in a state of pursuit is so important What is the flow state actually like? This conversation WILL really make a difference to your game. It is a wonderful discussion about the crucial skill of ACCEPTANCE To find out more about Raymond Prior go to https://www.btsmindset.com/ To start your FREE Mind Caddie 7 day trial go to https://www.mindcaddie.golf/ To book your Mind Caddie workshop at your club go to www.themindfactor.com To book your place on the ‘Lost Art of Golf' school get in touch at www.themindfactor.com OFFICIAL BRAND AMBASSADOR : Fenix Apparel and Accessories Co. On this episode we've got part 2 of our re-release of my all-time favorite episode of the podcast. It's from the very first conversation I had with Raymond Prior titled Golf Beneath the Surface released back in February of 2022. Again, this conversation was formative for me because it completely shifted my focus from the surface level mental game that we read about and hear on social media to deeper level psychology that actually gets at the heart of the issue. And it's the way I believe we should all be addressing our own improvement. Rather than jumping from one quick fix to the next, instead taking the time to address what's at the heart of our struggles. As Prior says, patiently and systematically working on something might be a slow road, but it's still the fasted road to sustainable change. So I hope you learn as much as I did in talking to Raymond Prior. I think you can even hear how I'm being challenged on my thinking during this episode. We're going to do something a little different this time. I actually don't think I've ever done this in the 4 and a half year history of The Mental Golf Show. I'm bringing back my all-time favorite episode the podcast. It's the original Golf Beneath the Surface episode with Raymond Prior from back in February 2022. This episode had a huuuuge effect on me. It set me on a path toward a much more research- and scientifically-based approach to the mental game, or as I've come to start rightfully terming it, golf psychology. It had a direct impact on the way I read and research, coach my players, how I run this podcast, and even tweet. Underneath all of the symptomatic things that we try to address is our inner experience. Our psychology. If you're only addressing the end results, you'll constantly be spinning your wheels. So Raymond Prior's approach to how he works with his players in a bottom up way has changed me in profound ways. And I hope I do him justice in the way that I talk about the psychological side of the game. In today's episode, Raymond Prior (@bts_mindset on twitter) comes back to tackle some of the common myths we hear in the performance psychology world. Honestly, one of my favorite games it so poke the bear and see if I can get Raymond riled up, and so I tossed him some cliches to see what would happen. I tried - and failed - to make this a lightning round… and the truth is there was a lot to dig into as we discussed things like “Just be positive” and “fake it til you make it”. Raymond's book, Golf Beneath the Surface, is now available anywhere you find your books, and is worth the time if you take performing your best seriously!

On this episode, we talk about meditation. What is it? How to do it? Why should I do it? How will it help my golf game? And if you're interested in nerding out with me and want to read more about the benefits of meditation/mindfulness practice, here's the best research paper I've personally read about it: Meditation experience is associated with difference in default mode network activity and connectivity https://www.researchgate.net/publication/51825876_Meditation_Experience_Is_Associated_with_Differences_in_Default_Mode_Network_Activity_and_Connectivity And here's an excerpt from Raymond Prior's book on just a “few” of the benefits mindfulness practice can have on you as a person: “A massive body of research shows people who practice mindfulness tend to be happier, more optimistic, more hopeful, and more fulfilled with their chosen crafts. They are more satisfied with their lives and grateful for what they have. They are less anxious, stressed, fearful, and depressed. They are less likely to repeatedly fall into unproductive habit loops and lose control in stressful environments. They are more emotionally intelligent and emotionally agile, allowing them to respond to negative emotions more effectively. They are more likely to engage in behaviors that lead to better health and higher performance related to physical fitness, nutrition, and sleep. They are physically healthier, have stronger immune systems, and even get fewer colds. They are more motivated to pursue passions and interests. They are more conscientious and openminded, leading to faster and better learning. They're more resilient when faced with challenges and show more grit when pursuing endeavors that are important to them. They are more forgiving, empathic, and are better able to see other's perspectives. They have closer and more functional relationships with friends, family, and romantic partners. “Oh, and people who practice mindfulness are more composed under pressure and have more stable confidence. “In the coming years, mindfulness practices will be as common, and required, for sport and performance as strength and conditioning training because the positive impacts are measurable and undeniable; those who don't understand and don't practice mindfulness will be left lagging behind.” Dr. Raymond Prior. How to develop STABLE confidence – Dr Raymond Prior Why is your confidence so unstable? Why do you have it TODAY and it is gone TOMORROW? What would it be like to have a STABLE confidence that doesn't come and go? Today we welcome back onto the podcast one of the most popular guests over the past 12 months Dr Raymond Prior. Raymond is one of the most sought after mental performance coaches in the USA and he has recently published a wonderful new book called ‘Golf – Beneath the Surface' which is a tremendous in depth study of what is REALLY happening in our brain when we are attempting to perform our best in sport. As the title says it is not about the ‘surface level' techniques often dished out to players but a study into what has been found by science to be truly beneficial in helping someone deal with the challenges of the game. So much of what we have been taught about mental coaching turns out to be nothing more that myths and misconceptions. In our conversation today we drill down and look at a number of those myths to get to the heart of what will REALLY make a difference.  We look into:   The true nature of STABLE confidence. What it is and why it is so important to have it  Why we suffer so much with insecurity in our game  Unstable confidence: Why so many of us are looking for confidence in all the wrong places  Why ACCEPTANCE is such a critical skill to understand  What acceptance definitely is NOT  How the yips ACTUALLY manifest in our mind and why just working on technique will NEVER solve the problem Raymond's new book is called: ‘Golf beneath the surface' and is available on Amazon  A really tremendous session with a great Performance Coach  To get a copy of the new ‘Neuro Putting' program with Dr Izzy Justice and Karl Morris go to https://themindfactor.net/shop-new/  To book your Mind Factor workshop get in touch with us at www.themindfactor.com

Welcome to part 2 of 2 where Raymond Prior, PhD and I work through another set of common golf psychology myths. If you haven't listened to part 1, I highly recommend it. In part 1 we talked about myths and cliches like “just be positive”, why distracting yourself is unhelpful, how you can't just will the ball into the hole or make yourself focus, and it's impossible to just forget a bad shot. We also had a little bonus at the end talking about block vs random practice and how much you should be challenging yourself in practice. In part 2 we talk about what's deceiving about the common wisdom surrounding nerves and anxiety, perception vs. reality, muscle memory, pre-shot routines, alcohol helping your anxiety, sleep being optional, and we take a deep dive on the yips that you're not going to want to miss. ----- Raymond Prior, PhD: Raymond Prior's website: btsmindset.com Amazon book- Golf Beneath the Surface: The New Science of Golf Psychology Raymond Prior, PhD on Twitter: @bts_mindset ----- Episode topics: 00:00 Intro 02:50 Myth # 4 - “Nerves = Anxiety” 14:12 Extra - Yips deep dive 20:35 Myth # 5 - “Perception is Reality” 26:40 Myth # 6 - “Muscle memory” 29:24 Extra - Pre-shot routines - Need em or not? 32:55 Myth # 7 - “Alcohol for 1st tee anxiety” 43:25 Myth # 8 - “I don't need to sleep” 48:27 Extra - The best thing to do after you get a golf lesson ----- Take the Mental Game Assessment and learn your top mental game traits and your areas in most need of improvement. ----- Click here to sign up for The Mental Re-Grip ⛳️ newsletter to receive golf psychology help in your email inbox every-ish Tuesday. ----- Have a suggestion for a topic or guest? Drop your suggestions here. ----- Prefer reading, but somehow found yourself here in audio land? Click here to check out the Foundations Mental Performance blog. ----- Are you a competitive golfer? In Dr. Prior's upcoming book Golf Beneath the Surface (Amazon link to purchase--not an ad), a major theme is how the cliches and catch phrases and mental tips and tricks that we've heard so many times are mostly just myths. They've been generally accepted as truths but don't actually have much or any supporting evidence to back them up. So you could look at this episode as a teaser for the book and some of the deeper evidence based psychology that you will learn reading it, but I think equipping yourself with this knowledge will allow you to be more informed in fact checking what you read and hear, as well as how to specifically apply the actual scientifically backed psychology that will help you play better golf. ----- Raymond Prior, PhD: Raymond Prior's website: btsmindset.com Amazon book- Golf Beneath the Surface: The New Science of Golf Psychology Raymond Prior, PhD on Twitter: @bts_mindset ----- Episode topics: 00:00 Intro 02:42 Myth #1 - “Just be Positive” 11:51 Myth #2 - “Distraction techniques” 23:50 Myth #3 - “Willing the ball into the hole” 34:02 Myth #4 - “Just forget about a bad shot” 39:38 Extra - “How much block/technique practice should I be doing?” ----- Take the Mental Game Assessment and learn your top mental game traits and your areas in most need of improvement.
