Jorge Bonilla joins the show to explain how the Sunday morning and evening "news" shows reflected a Biden-Harris statement cartooning Trump's speech.

Bald ist es soweit – die große Fallout-Serie von Amazon steht in den Startlöchern. Wenige Wochen vor der Veröffentlichung hat Amazon nochmal einen knapp dreiminütigen Trailer rausgehauen, der weitere Szenen aus der Serie zeigt – und ein Detail am Ende dürfte Fans besonders freuen.

Der König der Monster ist wieder da. Neben dem amerikanischen Monsterverse, in dem Godzilla als Actionfigur mit King Kong durch eine CGI-Landschaft sprintet, gibt es seit kurzem auch wieder das Original im Kino zu bestaunen. In Godzilla Minus One zerschmettert die Riesenechse erneut Wolkenkratzer und Innenstädte ihres Heimatlandes Japan. In dieser Folge des Filmmagazins besprechen wir den 33. Godzilla-Film aus dem Produktionshaus Toho. Anders als Shin Godzilla spielt Minus One nicht in der Gegenwart, sondern kurz nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Japan ist zerbombt, die Menschen leben notdürftig in Holzbaracken und das Meer vor Tokio ist mit Unterwasserminen übersät. Der Protagonist Shikishima ist als Kamikaze-Pilot, der sich weigerte, sein Leben für sein Land zu opfern, selbst vom Krieg gezeichnet. In diesen unsicheren Zeiten lässt Godzilla nun seinen zerstörerischen Atem frei. Und trotz der enttäuschenden Story, die allzu leichtfertig mit dem Kriegserbe Japans umgeht, ist der Film ein wahres Spektakel. Mit einem Budget von (für Kino-Verhältnisse) nur rund 15 Millionen Dollar inszeniert Takashi Yamazaki einen Bombast, wie man ihn früher nur aus Hollywood kannte.

WIR SIND ZUHAUSE! Die dritte Phase der Hohen Republik ist gestartet und das bedeutet: Bekannte Figuren, bekannte Orte und bekannte Probleme! Die Nihil sind in Das Auge der Finsternis immer noch der große Dorn im Auge der Republik und der Jedi und haben sich nun sogar in ihren eigenen, durch den Stormwall geschützten, Bereich zurückgezogen! Von dort aus senden sie, fliehend nur, ohnmächtige Kakophonien stürmischerer Nihil (für alle Goethe-Fans da draußen). Also genug zu tun für die Jedi in und außerhalb der Zone, es gibt ja nicht mal eine Luftbrücke, die zumindest etwas Hilfe bereitstellen könnte. Eine solche zu etablieren, ist das große Ziel in diesem Roman. Grund genug also, damit sich Ines, Janina und Tobias ausgiebig über das Werk unterhalten können und identifizieren, wieso es endlich wieder Hoffnung gibt, dass die Hohe Republik - nach dem eher mäßig überzeugenden Der gefallene Stern und der wenig relevanten zweiten Phase - wieder zurück zu alter Stärke findet. Warum der Roman gerade wegen der eher überschaubaren Fülle an Handlung und dem Fehlen eines Setpieces gut dafür geeignet ist, um sich wieder zuhause einzufinden, und wie er es schafft, die Weichen zu stellen, soll Thema in dieser Besprechung sein. Zudem gehen wir auch auf ein paar Schwächen ein und sprechen darüber, wie gut George Mann bitte Prosa schreiben kann! Technischer Hinweis: Wir hatten in der Folge kleine Probleme mit Ines' Sound, weshalb sie im spoilerfreien Teil auch etwas leiser ist als Janina und Tobias. Das ändert sich dann aber im Spoilerteil! Wir mussten einfach darüber reden: Der kanadische Erfolgs-Regisseur James Cameron hat mit dem lange erwarteten zweiten Teil der «Avatar»-Saga noch einmal (und diesmal wortwörtlich) hohe Wellen geworfen: Nachdem der erste Teil dieser Reihe seit 2009 die Liste der finanziell erfolgreichsten Filme aller Zeiten anführt (mit knapp 3 Milliarden Umsatz), ist auch «Avatar – The Way of the Water» auf bestem Weg in die kommerzielle Top Ten. Jakob «Jay» Friedrichs, Janna Horstmann und Manuel Schmid diskutieren über das technisch überwältigende Werk, das sie aber doch irritiert und irgendwie leer zurücklässt. Die Themen Umweltschutz und Klimawandel stehen im Zentrum des Films, dazu kommen Fragen der Integration des Fremden und der spirituellen Verbindung mit der Natur. Für zukunftsfähige Lösungen lässt das schwarzweisse Narrativ von Avatar aber keinen Raum – trotz 3D bleibt der Film darum eigenartig flach. Jay vermisst trotz allem virtuellen Bombast eingängige Bilder, Janna stösst sich am bürgerlich-patriarchalen Rollenbild der Protagonisten, und Manuel wäre am liebsten aus dem Kino gelaufen, bevor die Menschen kommen und das wunderschöne Fantasie-Idyll zerstören…

Or at least no one has a role they're willing to play properly. That's been the trouble over these lives, if they'd just listen to me we could've had such an easy go of things. But no matter how many times I try, I cannot get people to listen. So don't take it personally doctor, there isn't a being on this planet - human or mutant - that is on my level. DOC: Of course not. You created your own level. Who wants to get on it? Well, that's a different story. You're not matching the incentives of others, so they're disinterested…antagonistic, even. Projective identification. MOIRA: Oh don't come at me with that nonsense. I've tried to match incentives. I've done the work in ways you can't even imagine. I've gone through torturous lifetimes that would make your soul weep. The end is always the same - death and pain for everyone. So I'm trying a new tactic, and I'm going to prevent the pain from even starting. But no, I have to deal with zealots like Erik who fight for the purity of it all, or hopeless optimists like Charles who believe in a harmony that will never exist, or warmongers like Apocalypse who revel in the pain. I created my own level because no one else actually wants to keep people from suffering. I came close… I had a utopia… and they hated me for it. So now I'm done cooperating, I'm done pretending to be nice Moira. I'll give them the world they don't know they want, and they can thank me later. Or not. Either way, they're getting it. DOC: Fatalism. Next? MOIRA: Oversimplification. Next? DOC: It's not my fault if you collapse all of your trauma into a term that any undergraduate could look up in seconds. I think your collective experience yields more wisdom than that. But you already know that, don't you? MOIRA: There are no words in English, Krakoan, or any other form of communication on this planet that could define what I have gone through.  DOC: Then stop using those languages. You get to make your own definitions. You're too smart to get yourself bogged down in existentialism. I get that. But you've cut too much meat off of the bone. That's a flavorless existence. MOIRA: Mixed metaphors,*tsk tsk tsk* you ought to be ashamed of yourself. DOC: Deflection. Good one. MOIRA: And what is your role in all of this? You play along with the “heroes”, deluding yourself into believing you're “helping” make things better, all in service of some greater good that does. Not. Exist. And all the while the world hurtles towards its inevitable extinction. You are… you are so out of your element it defies explanation.  DOC: Ad hominem attack. Nice. Almost threw in nihilism but not quite. MOIRA: Oh, now look who's DOC: *interrupting* condescension, albeit juvenile.  MOIRA: That's not really- DOC: *clearly not listening* But where are the emotional overtones? Where's rage? No, too intellectual for that…Bombast. That's the word. MOIRA: Are you daft? DOC: No no no, we already covered that. Ah, I wish I had one of my professors here, we'd keep going longer, but you're not helping MOIRA: This is outrageous. Stop it! DOC: *snaps finger* premeditated victimization! That's it! That's the new term you've created for yourself. You live your life solely for the purpose of your own martyrdom, like a bastardized phoenix! MOIRA: How dare you compare me to that… thing… I am not some wanton destroyer bent on chaos. I was bringing life and order and peace to an entire planet, I was ending millennia of conflict. I am a scalpel, and you think me a Neanderthalic club. This further proves how inadequate your conception of my plans and the world is. Even for someone who's lived a multitude of lives, I have wasted so much time speaking with you. DOC: Your choice, right? And to clarify my stance in your metaphor, I DO think you know how to hold a scalpel. I'm not accustomed to someone so willingly holding the belly of the blade in their palm and complain that the world doesn't appreciate the bloodshed. MOIRA: As any woman will tell you, birth requires bloodshed. I'm not shying away from it. It's simply an objective assessment of the situation. DOC: Oh, I agree it's objectification alright. I know that's not what you said, but I had to give my objective assessment of your objective assessment, you see. MOIRA: Hmm. I am no longer entertained by this game. We're done here. DOC: Sorry you consider this a game. After all, I thought you make the rules. MOIRA: I do. In den frühen 70er Jahren hatte Regisseur John Boorman die glorreiche Idee, den Herr der Ringe zu verfilmen und tauschte sich darüber auch emsig mit dem damals noch lebenden Tolkien aus. Wie so viele Versuche das Fantasyepos auf die Leinwand zu bringen, scheiterte auch dieser. Aber Boorman war schon immer einen Zacken ambitionierter als viele seiner Kollegen, und so bewahrte er viele seiner damals entworfenen visuellen, narrativen und allegorischen Überlegungen in einer Schublade, um sie gut zehn Jahre später für ein anderes Fantasyepos wiederzuverwerten. Excalibur, 1981, so etwas wie ein persönliches Projekt Boormans, nicht nur weil er es in unmittelbarer Nachbarschaft seines Wohnortes in Irland umsetzte und die Hälfte des Casts mit Familienmitgliedern besetzte. Nein, auch weil er hier nochmal alles in die Waagschale warf, nachdem sein letzter Film - The Exorcist II - glorreich gescheitert war: Mit für ein Fantasyepos recht dürftigen Budget, zahllosen unbekannten Schauspielern (von denen aber viele später noch eine beachtliche Filmkarriere hinlegen sollten) und Spaß an Pomp, Bombast, Albernheit und Kitsch. Excalibur ist ein Konvolut von Fantastischem, Übertriebenem und Bizarrem. So als würde sich ein Kind auf den Artus- und Gralsmythos stürzen. Da kämpft dann eine Hand voll Ritter in Alurüstungen vermeintlich gigantische Kriege, Merlin darf als Mischung aus Gandalf und Goofball Drachenmächte beschwören und natürlich wird zu Richard Wagner und Carl Orff in die Schlacht geritten. Als Kind habe ich dieses Tohuwabohu geliebt, als Erwachsener sehe ich dann doch die zahllosen albernen und unfreiwillig komischen Momente. Und doch ist diese Artusverfilmung auch ein beeindruckendes Epos, mit berauschenden Bildern, großartigen Allegorien und keiner Angst vor einem Wahnwitz, der sonst leider vielen Fantasyfilmen abgeht.
